Canon's EF 70-300mm USM IS lens gives you the impressive telephoto power and fast autofocus you need for taking rapid-fire shots of far-off subjects. Its versatile focal range and optical performance make it a great choice for use with your Canon digital SLR camera. But its big claim to fame is its renowned Image Stabilization (IS) technology, which lets you take sharp, in-focus photographs in all sorts of lighting conditions. Here's how it works.

We've all taken a picture and had it turn out blurry because our hands moved a little while we were capturing the shot. Image Stabilization works around this problem. Built-in vibration sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens. IS lenses are much loved by photographers who don't like to carry along a tripod on every excursion, but who require crisp photos as a matter of course.

High-tech Image Stabilization isn't the only advantage to this lens. There's the extensive telephoto zoom range, for capturing distant subjects, or snapping precise close-ups of objects as near as five feet. And with its powerful Micro Ultrasonic Motor (USM), this lens makes autofocus very fast.

Great shots of wildlife and sporting events. The image stabilizer makes anyone a pro

Awesome lens!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this lens with the Canon EOS 60D. The price and deal Crutchfield had was too good to pass. The lens is fantastic!! I used it at my son's baseball games sitting along the outfield to take shots of him playing catcher at home; 1st base; pitcher and running the bases. The detail and clarity even after cropping was spectacular! I can't wait to use it at the ocean boogie boarding!

Pros: Fantastic zoom, clarity and quality.

Cons: Only wish it came with a lens hood, but I should be able to pick one up somewhere.

amazing lens for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this lens was recommended to me by a friend. yes, i would have loved to spend 2x, 3x, 5x the money for an L series lens, but lets face it - i just don't have the budget for that right now. for the money, this is a great quality lens, excellent features and usability. exceptional zoom capability and quality photos that don't come with most zoom lenses in the price range. paired with my canon 7D

Pros: well worth the money. great quality

Cons: none so far

Features

Compatibility: The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens is compatible with Canon EOS SLR cameras.

IS (Image Stabilizer): The Image Stabilizer helps prevent blurred pictures during hand-held shooting (no tripod) at slow shutter speeds. The image stabilizer gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed three stops faster. There are two IS settings; Mode 1 is for normal photography and provides stabilization in all directions, Mode 2 is for continuous shots of moving subjects and provides stabilization only in the direction of camera movement.

USM (Ultrasonic Motor): The lens uses a Micro USM (Ultrasonic Motor) for swift, silent autofocus.

Auto/Manual Focus Modes: To shoot in autofocus mode, you must set the focus mode switch on the lens to AF. To manually focus the camera, you must set the switch to MF and focus by turning the focusing ring.

Zoom Lock: The zoom ring can be locked in the widest position, convenient for carrying the camera using the shoulder strap because the lens won't extend.

Optional Accessories (available from Canon): This lens can be used with an optional ET-65B hood and optional 58mm filters.
