Our take on the Canon EOS 70D 3X Zoom Lens Kit

Canon

Develop your photography hobby

You don't have to be an expert photographer to use an SLR — they all offer easy automatic shooting. Because of their build quality and the physics of good glass and large sensors, even their built-in automatic settings will get you better pictures than most point-and-shoots or mobile devices. But experienced photographers and budding hobbyists can get more creative by manually adjusting settings like aperture and shutter speed. SLRs let you expand your shooting options with additional lenses and flashes to suit just about any situation. If you'd like to record the occasional video, look for a model with high-def movie mode.

Canon raises the bar... again

Those who follow the DSLR marketplace have been eagerly awaiting "the next big thing" in digital camera technology. Canon's EOS 70D has arrived to remove the veil. The 70D features a redesigned sensor with a new approach to autofocus that can truly be termed ground-breaking. Dual Pixel CMOS AF (autofocus) imbues the camera's live view and video modes with the kind of speed, accuracy, and tracking capability that was formerly only available to still-shooters working through the viewfinder.

Canon's next-generation autofocus system

Each pixel on the 20-megapixel sensor surface has two photodiodes instead of one, gathering light from opposite ends of the lens's projected image. When the image processor detects differences in phase between the two signals, focus can be adjusted almost instantly. And while this "phase-detection" concept isn't all that new, the ability to have most of the pixels on your image sensor involved in the calculation is. The result? Exceptional subject tracking, even while shooting video or using live view.

Video and live view

Why is this such important news? Well, let's talk about video first. When you're shooting video, you'll be following some sort of action much of the time. Traditionally, video shooters were either pretty handy with manual focus on their own, or they got a second person to tend to that detail (look for the job "focus puller" or "assistant camera" next time you watch a set of movie credits). For a long time, videographers have dreamed of enjoying the same quick, dependable focus performance that still photographers enjoy, but to date the industry's autofocus implementation for video has been less than ideal. Now it looks like that may be changing. Fast.

Then, there's live view, used for viewing images on the camera's LCD instead of through the viewfinder. When is that important? Well, say you're shooting wide-angle shots from a low vantage point on a tripod. The action scene in front of you needs to have its focus updated every time a new subject comes into view. But looking through the viewfinder every time you want to check focus will wreak havoc with your back in the morning. Enter the 70D's fully-articulated, bright LCD touchscreen in live view mode. No more bending down to see what you're shooting. You'll have the information you need, and the control too, as the touchscreen offers a great way to interact with the camera. And with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, live view is more versatile and dependable than ever.

Wi-Fi too

Now on to another welcome feature: built-in Wi-Fi. There's no extra module to buy. The built-in Wi-Fi will let you remotely operate the shutter and manipulate selected settings using apps on compatible smartphones or tablets, while showing you what you're seeing through the lens on the device's screen. Plus, it enables quick and easy file transfer and uploads to social networks and email, and it opens the doorway to new potential applications in the future. The free Canon EOS Remote app is available for both Apple® iOS® and Android™ smart devices. And don't forget, you can also print hard copies of photos from a compatible PictBridge certified wireless printer, directly from the camera, without hooking it up via a cable or removing your memory card.

Other top features from Canon

Preset scene modes and cool features like Video Snapshot make the Canon 70D a versatile documenter of vacation fun. The DIGIC 5+ image processor is more than up to the challenge of fast continuous high-resolution shots, maxing out at a cool 7 frames per second, so you'll always get the action shot. The on-board creative image processing filters are previewable in real-time on the live-view LCD screen. And a handy on-screen feature guide will advise you step-by-step while you're selecting potential shooting modes.

Canon also included their ultra-quiet, fast-focusing STM (stepping motor) 18-55mm image-stabilizing zoom lens with this kit for capturing outstanding, blur-free photos and videos under all kinds of shooting conditions.

Recording Features

Lens Compatibility: The Canon EOS 70D digital SLR camera is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S lineup. This gives you a wide range of lenses to choose from, from ultra-wide angle to super-telephoto lenses. This kit includes the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS STM zoom lens.

Viewfinder: The EOS 70D features an eye-level, pentaprism optical viewfinder with approximately 98% coverage. It has a built-in diopter so you can adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight with or without glasses. Separate dioptric adjustment viewfinder lenses (from +2 to -4), available from Canon, can be installed on the camera, if desired. When using the self-timer or remote control, the supplied eyepiece cover, attached to the neck strap, can be used to prevent light from entering the eyepiece.

Vari-angle Clear View LCD Monitor: The EOS 70D features a 3" Vari-angle Touch Screen TFT color Clear View LCD monitor with approximately 1,040,000 dots which allows you to view and shoot real-time images. The monitor swivels out and rotates up to 270° for shooting at difficult angles. The LCD monitor offers 100% viewing coverage and 7 brightness levels to choose from. The capacitive-type touch screen is similar to today's popular mobile devices, and lets you use two-finger touch gestures to zoom or change images.

Live View: The Live View Function enables you to shoot still images or videos while viewing the image on the camera's LCD monitor. The Final Image Simulation function lets you view the effects of the camera's settings on the photo you are taking. You can check the color, white balance, lighting, exposure, depth of field, and aspect ratio before you take the shot.

Dual Axis Electronic Level: The EOS 70D features a Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1° increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD.

Depth-of-Field Preview: The aperture opening changes only at the moment when the photo is taken. The aperture normally remains fully open as you frame your shot, making the depth-of-field seem narrow. Pressing the Depth-of-Field Preview button stops down the lens to the set aperture opening and lets you check the depth-of-field before the shot.

Grid Display: The grid display superimposes vertical and horizontal lines in the monitor during Live View to help you compose your pictures. You can choose from Grid 1 which divides the monitor into 9 sections--3 vertical and 3 horizontal. Grid 2 divides the monitor into 24 sections--4 vertical and 6 horizontal.

20.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: The EOS 70D features a 20.2 Megapixel APS-C size (22.5 x 15.0mm) Dual Pixel CMOS sensor that captures a high level of resolution so it's easy to crop images for enlargement without concern of losing detail. A major factor in reducing noise, the CMOS sensor assures that images shot at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth. The image sensor has a 3:2 aspect ratio with 20.9-million total pixels and 20.2-million effective pixels (5472 H x 3648 V).

Sensor Cleaning: The camera has a self-cleaning sensor unit attached to the image sensor's front-layer (low-pass filter) to shake off dust automatically. The dust delete data can also be appended to the image so that the dust spots remaining can be erased automatically by the provided Digital Photo Professional software.

Note: Dust which could not be removed by the automatic sensor cleaning can be removed manually with a blower.

DIGIC 5+ Image Processor: The EOS 70D's DIGIC 5+ Image Processor ensures that images are captured, processed, and saved with remarkable speed. Using two 4-channel A/D converter front-end processing circuits, the camera can deliver continuous full resolution images at speeds of up to 7.0 fps.

Recording Media: The EOS 70D records images onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, including UHS-I cards. The camera is also compatible with Eye-Fi cards, which allow you to automatically transfer captured images to a personal computer or upload them to an online service via a wireless LAN.

Note: No recording media is supplied with the camera.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW (14-bit) formats in 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 or 1:1 aspect ratio. Simultaneous RAW+JPEG recording is also possible. In addition, the camera can record video in the MOV format (Video: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio: Linear PCM). Audio is recorded in monaural using the built-in microphone, or in stereo with an external stereo microphone (sold separately).

  • JPEG: You can choose from the following JPEG image sizes in each aspect ratio: Large, Medium, Small 1, Small 2, or Small 3. For each resolution, you can set the image compression to Fine or Normal (S2 and S3 are Fine only).
  • RAW Format: The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera CMOS sensor without further processing and converts it to digital data and records it onto the card as is. RAW images can be processed in the camera and saved as JPEG images. You can choose from the following RAW image sizes in each aspect ratio: RAW, mRAW, or sRAW. You can also record a Large/Fine JPEG image along with a RAW, mRAW, or sRAW image simultaneously.
  • MOV Format (Video: H.264, Audio: Linear PCM): The EOS 70D supports Full HD 1920 x 1080 (30p/25p/24p) and HD 1280 x 720 (60p/50p), and SD 640 x 480 (30p). You can choose from two types of compression: IPB (compresses multiple frames at a time) or All-I (compresses one frame at a time for recording, making the movie more suitable for editing).
Note: Video recording is only available in Live View Mode using the camera's LCD monitor.

Drive Modes: The Canon EOS 70D offers the following Drive (Shutter) modes.

  • Single Shooting: When you press the shutter button completely, one shot will be taken.
  • Continuous Shooting: While you press the shutter button completely, multiple shots will be taken continuously.
    • High-Speed: maximum 7 shots per second
    • Low-Speed: maximum 3 shots per second
  • Self-Timer: The camera will record an image 2 or 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button.
  • Silent Shooting: Shoots a single image or continuously (3 fps) with less shooting sound
Note: The Canon EOS 70D is compatible with Canon IR wireless remote controls (RC-1 or RC-5), so you can shoot remotely up to approximately 16.4 feet.

AF System: The EOS 70D features a 19-point, cross-type Auto Focus system. All 19 points can be selected automatically or manually. In addition to single-point AF and 19-point automatic selection AF, you can manually choose one of five zones for focusing: groups of four AF points at the top, bottom, left, or right extremes, or a 9-point center focusing zone.

AF Modes: You can select the AF mode to suit the shooting conditions or subject. In Basic Zone modes, the most suitable AF mode is set automatically. You can choose from the following AF modes:

  • One-Shot AF: suited for still subjects, the camera focuses only once
  • AI Servo AF: for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. The subject will be focused continuously while the shutter button is pressed halfway
  • AI Focus AF: switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving

Manual Focus: When autofocus fails due to conditions or lighting, you can focus manually by setting the switch on the lens to MF and turning the focus ring until the subject looks sharp in the viewfinder.

AF Assist Beam: The camera's built-in flash (or an attached external flash) will fire a series of flashes in a row to assist during auto-focusing in low-light situations. This AF-assist beam is effective up to approximately 13.1 feet.

Shooting Modes: The EOS 70D offers multiple shooting modes, which are selectable on the top-mounted Mode Dial. The modes are divided into two zones (Creative Zone and Basic Zone), plus Custom Shooting Mode. To avoid accidentally changing the shooting mode, the mode dial has a lock, requiring you to hold down the lock-release button while you turn the dial. The Shooting Modes are as follows:

  • Creative Zone:
    • Program AE: A general-purpose shooting mode; the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness.
    • Shutter-priority AE: In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject.
    • Aperture-priority AE: In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness.
    • Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired.
    • Bulb: When the Bulb setting is selected, the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button completely, and closes when you release it. Bulb exposures can be used for night scenes, fireworks, or other subjects requiring long exposures.
  • Basic Zone:
    • Scene Intelligent Auto: A fully automatic mode; the camera analyzes the scene and sets the optimum settings automatically.
    • Flash Off: This mode can be used in places where flash photography is prohibited, such as museums. It can also be used for capturing the ambience of a scene, such as candlelight scenes.
    • Creative Auto: The Creative Auto mode enables you to easily change the picture's brightness, depth of field, and color tone; while the camera automatically adjusts the exposure.
    • Special Scene: The camera lets you choose an appropriate scene setting, and will automatically set the camera to the scene. You can choose from Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, Night Portrait, Handheld Night Scene, and HDR Backlight Control.
  • Custom Shooting Mode: You can register the current camera settings, including the shooting mode, AF operation, menu settings, etc., for easy recall.

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-5 stops in 1/3-stop increments, however, the viewfinder and LCD can only display the setting up to +/-3 stops.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots. If the Drive Mode is set to Single Shot, you will have to press the shutter button three times. If set to Continuous shooting, the three bracketed shots will be taken continuously.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

63-Zone Metering Sensor: The EOS 70D features a 63-zone metering sensor with the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: The camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure
  • Partial Metering: Effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 7.7% of the frame at the center
  • Spot Metering: For metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 3% of the frame at the center
  • Center-weighted Average Metering: Metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene

ISO Speed: You can set the ISO speed to suit the ambient light level. The ISO speed can be set automatically between ISO 100 and ISO 12800 in 1/3-stop increments, depending upon the shooting mode. For more control, you can manually set the ISO speed between ISO 100 and ISO 12800, or expand it to an equivalent of ISO 25600.

Built-in Flash: The Canon EOS 70D digital SLR camera features a built-in flash, which will pop up and fire automatically in Basic Zone modes. In the Creative Zone modes, you can pop up the flash manually when you wish to use the flash. When Red-eye Reduction is applied, a pre-flash will prevent the red-eye effect for most photos. Flash Exposure Compensation allows you to make the flash exposure darker or brighter +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

External Flash: You can mount an external flash unit to the camera's hot shoe. The camera is compatible with Canon's external EX-series Speedlites (sold separately). The camera's built-in flash can work as a master unit with Canon Speedlites having a wireless slave feature and wirelessly trigger the Speedlite to fire.

Auto Lighting Optimizer: If an image comes out dark or the contrast is low, the brightness and contrast can be corrected automatically. With JPEG images, the correction is done when the image is captured.

Picture Style: By selecting a picture style you can achieve various effects matching your photographic expression or the subject. You can also adjust the Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation and Color tone of each Picture Style. Picture Style selections include:

  • Standard: Image looks vivid, sharp, and crisp.
  • Portrait: For nice skin tones, the image looks slightly sharp and crisp, color tone can be adjusted to change skin tone.
  • Landscape: Vivid blues and greens, very sharp and crisp image.
  • Neutral: Natural colors and subdued images, no sharpness applied. (recommended for users who prefer to process images on their PC).

Wi-Fi Functions

Wireless Functions: The EOS 70D's wireless LAN functions let you perform a range of tasks wirelessly:

  • Transfer Images Between Cameras: You can transfer still images and movies shot with this camera to another Canon camera with built-in wireless LAN functions. The camera can be connected to only one camera at a time.
  • Connect to a Smartphone: Connecting to a smartphone lets you use the phone to view, manage, and receive images stored in the camera. The EOS Remote app, available from the App Store or Google Play, must be downloaded to the phone.
  • Print Images to a Wi-Fi Printer: You can directly print images by connecting the camera with a wireless LAN-compatible printer supporting PictBridge (DPS over IP). Up to 3 printers can be registered to the camera.
  • Operate the Camera Remotely: You can remotely operate the camera from your computer using the supplied EOS Utility software via a wireless LAN. Available functions include: downloading images, changing camera settings, remote shooting, upload background music (for slide shows), and upload images to web services.
  • Send Images to a Web Service: To wirelessly send images to Web services requires membership to Canon iMage Gateway (free of charge). Once you are a member, you can publish photos to online albums, send photos and videos to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, or attach images to email.
  • View Images Using a Media Player: Images on the camera's memory card can be viewed on a TV via a wireless LAN. This function requires a DLNA-compatible TV, game console, smartphone, or other media player.

Compatibility: The Canon EOS Remote app, required for connecting the camera to a smartphone, is compatible with iOS version 5.0 or later and Android devices version 2.3/4.0 or later.

Play, Edit, and Print Functions

Image Display: When playing back single images, you can choose from several formats. The LCD can display the image with basic information, shooting information display, histogram, or no information.

Index Display: This feature allows you to view four or nine images at once on the LCD monitor so that you can search for an image quickly.

Jump Playback: During playback you can jump to images 1, 10 or 100 images at a time. You can also jump screens by date, folder, movies, stills, or rating.

Zoom Magnification: When viewing a still picture in single image playback mode, you can magnify the image from 1.5x to 10x. While the image is magnified, you can scroll anywhere around the image.

Touch Screen Playback: With the touch-sensitive LCD panel, you can browse images with a swiping motion with one finger. In the index display, you can skip to the next or previous screen with an up or down swipe of your finger. Swiping the monitor with two fingers lets you jump through images by the increment set in the Jump Playback menu. A pinching motion with two fingers lets you switch from single image to 4-image or 9-image index display. Spreading your two fingers apart on the screen lets you magnify the image, and scroll around the image by dragging your finger. Tapping the "return" icon will return to the single image display.

Auto Rotation: Vertical shots can be rotated automatically so that they are displayed upright during playback.

Image Review: The image can be displayed on the LCD monitor immediately after you shoot. The review time can be set to off (not displayed), 2 seconds, 4 seconds, 8 seconds, or Hold, which keeps the image displayed on the LCD monitor until the camera is focused again.

Slide Show: You can view all images on the memory card one after another with the Auto Playback function (slide show). You can choose which recorded images will be displayed in the slide show by selecting All images, Folder, Date, Movies, Stills, or Rating. The Slide Show setup menu lets you set the display time (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, or 20 sec), repeat mode, transition effect (slide in 1, slide in 2, fade 1, fade 2, or fade 3), and background music.

Rotating Images: You can rotate an image by 90° or 270° clockwise in the LCD monitor.

Protect Images: You can select specific images from being erased accidentally.

Video/HDMI Outputs: You can playback your images or movies on a TV by connecting the camera via an optional HDMI cable, such as the Canon HTC-100. For connecting to a non-HDTV, the optional AVC-DC400ST stereo AV cable is needed.

Creative Filters: There are numerous Creative Filters that can be applied to images and saved as a new image: Grainy B/W, Soft Focus, Fish-eye Effect, Art Bold Effect, Water Painting Effect, Toy Camera Effect, and Miniature Effect.

Printing Effects: The camera allows you to choose from the following Printing Effects:

  • On: image will be printed according to the printer's standard colors
  • Off: no automatic correction will be performed
  • Vivid: image will be printed with higher saturation to produce more vivid blues and greens
  • NR: image noise is reduced before printing
  • B/W: prints in black-and-white with true blacks
  • B/W Cool: prints in black-and-white with cool, bluish blacks
  • B/W Warm: prints in black-and-white with warm, yellowish blacks
  • Natural: prints the image in the actual colors and contrast
  • Natural M: printing characteristics are the same as the "Natural" setting, however this setting enable finer printing adjustments
  • Default: printing will differ depending on the printer

Brightness: The image brightness can be adjusted within the camera before printing.

Red-Eye Correction: The red eye phenomenon will be corrected within the camera before printing.

Trimming: You can crop an image and print only the trimmed portion as if the image was recomposed. You can also edit out the first and last scenes of a movie in 1-second increments.

DPOF Print Settings: On the memory card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once, on optional Canon direct print function compliant printers, on PictBridge compliant printers, or at participating photo labs.

Direct Print Function: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a CP-series printer that supports the Direct Print function. You can also connect the camera directly to certain Canon Bubble Jet printers. In this way, you can make prints directly from the camera without connecting a computer.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is the standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

Worth the wait!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just received my camera and I'm very happy so far. The auto-focus in video and live view modes is sharp, quick and silent. 7 FPS is freaking fast! The combination of button control and touchscreen blow away the other cameras I have used. I love the versatility of being able to control it with buttons like a pro or the easy to use touchscreen for convenience, or the newbie.
Pros:
Build quality and feel. The features crammed into this camera are never ending. Easy to navigate menu and buttons.
Cons:
No built in time-lapse mode. This is the only feature I would have really liked. Though it may be a moot point with the WiFi and a few apps.
