Depress the shutter button halfway, and the camera stays focused until you're ready to take your shot.

The included 18-55mm STM (stepping motor) zoom lens is great for all kinds of shooting situations. It's lightweight, quick to focus, and super-quiet — perfect for video and still photography.

A dynamite autofocus system made even better

Canon updated their already well-regarded Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system for even more speed, accuracy, and tracking capability than before. This system enables fast, smooth autofocus performance in Live View mode and during movie shooting, where quick focus is essential. Movie focus is natural and precise, even when switching between subjects. The 80D's new 45-point autofocus system excels in challenging light and allows four types of AF area selection modes for different situations.

Put your vision in motion with Full HD video recording

If you're new to videography, the EOS 80D is a great camera to learn on, plus it's fun to use. It shoots Full HD (1920 x 1080) 60p movies that can be saved as MP4s for easy sharing. Thanks to the raw imaging power of the camera's sensor and lightning-fast DIGIC 6 processor, you'll get sharp, well-exposed video any time of day. Movie Servo AF tracking complements the autofocus system's speedy performance, helping keep the camera focused during action sequences. Video Snapshot mode lets you shoot two-, four-, or eight-second clips and stitch them together into a single movie. Capture the highlights of your next vacation in a cool, engaging way, or just have fun documenting daily life.

More tools for creative exploration

The 80D has seven different creative filters for Live View shooting. Give your photos a dreamy look with the Soft Focus effect, or make a city street look like a scale model with the Miniature effect. For movies, you get five different creative effects to choose from. You can apply each one to varying degrees and even preview them on the LCD in Live View mode. The filters can also be applied after shooting, so you can experiment with different effects to dial in the look you want.

Create luminous HDR photos and videos

You'll also find some new HDR (high dynamic range) modes on the 80D for capturing natural highlight and shadow details in contrasting light — great for sunset shooting. In HDR Movie mode, the camera captures two HD movie frames at different exposures and combines them together for playback at up to 30 frames per second. For still shooting, you get a choice between five different HDR modes (Natural, Art standard, Art bold, Art vivid, Art embossed) to suit your situation and preference.

Speed up time

Time-Lapse Movie mode lets you take still photos at set intervals and combine them in-camera to create a movie. It's an easy way to capture stunning interpretive video that shows the fleeting nuances of clouds moving across the sky, a flower opening, people getting around on the street, and just about any other changing scene you can think of.

Wi-Fi adds convenience, flexibility, and control

The 80D's built-in Wi-Fi lets you use Canon's free Camera Connect app to transfer images and MP4 movies straight to your compatible phone or tablet. With the app, you can use your device as a wireless remote, and even change settings on the 80D. Full DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatibility lets you share easily between the 80D and other DLNA-certified products like HDTVs. NFC touch pairing lets you connect easily to a compatible Android™ device, or to any other compatible device with NFC, like the Canon Connect Station CS100 wireless storage hub.

Overview: This Canon EOS 80D kit includes the EOS 80D (W) camera body and the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom lens. The camera comes with a wide fabric neck strap, the LP-E6N Lithium-ion battery, and LC-E6 battery charger.

Lens Compatibility: The EOS 80D has the Canon EF mount, and is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S lineup. This gives you a wide range of lenses to choose from, from ultra-wide angle to super-telephoto lenses. This kit includes the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS STM zoom lens.

Note: When you use EF lenses, which are designed for full frame cameras, the focal length on the EOS 80D will be 1.6 times the focal length indicated on the lens.

Viewfinder: The EOS 80D features an eye-level pentaprism optical viewfinder with approximately 100% coverage (for 3:2 aspect ratio). It has a built-in -3.0 - +1.0 diopter, so you can adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight with or without glasses. When using the self-timer or remote control, the supplied eyepiece cover, attached to the neck strap, can be used to prevent light from entering through the eyepiece.

Vari-angle Clear View LCD Monitor: The EOS 80D features a 3" Vari-angle Touch Screen TFT color Clear View LCD II monitor with approximately 1,040,000 dots which allows you to view and shoot real-time images. The monitor swivels out and rotates up to 270° for shooting at difficult angles. The LCD monitor offers 100% viewing coverage and 7 brightness levels to choose from. The capacitive-type touch feature lets you operate the camera with tap and drag actions for setting menu functions and controlling playback operations. During Live View Shooting, the touch screen lets you select AF points, and take a picture with the Touch Shutter function.

Live View: The Live View Function enables you to shoot still images or videos while viewing the image on the camera's LCD monitor. The Final Image Simulation function lets you view the effects of the camera's settings on the photo you are taking. You can check the color, white balance, lighting, exposure, depth of field, and aspect ratio before you take the shot.

Electronic Level: The EOS 80D features an Electronic Level display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots. It displays the horizontal tilt in 5° increments to make sure your photos are level. The forward/backward tilt is not displayed.

Depth-of-Field Preview: The aperture opening changes only at the moment when the photo is taken. The aperture normally remains fully open as you frame your shot, making the depth-of-field seem narrow. Pressing the Depth-of-Field Preview button stops down the lens to the set aperture opening and lets you check the depth-of-field before the shot.

Grid Display: The grid display superimposes vertical and horizontal lines in the monitor during Live View to help you compose your pictures. You can choose from Grid 1 which divides the monitor into 9 sections--3 vertical and 3 horizontal. Grid 2 divides the monitor into 24 sections--4 vertical and 6 horizontal. A 3x3+diagonal grid is also available.

24.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: The EOS 80D features a 24.2 Megapixel APS-C size (22.3 x 14.9mm) CMOS sensor that captures a high level of resolution so it's easy to crop images for enlargement without concern of losing detail. A major factor in reducing noise, the CMOS sensor assures that images shot at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth. The image sensor has a 3:2 aspect ratio with 25.8-million total pixels.

Sensor Cleaning: The camera has a self-cleaning sensor unit attached to the image sensor's front-layer (low-pass filter) to shake off dust automatically. The dust delete data can also be appended to the image so that the dust spots remaining can be erased automatically by the provided Digital Photo Professional software.

Note: Dust which could not be removed by the automatic sensor cleaning can be removed manually with a blower.

DIGIC 6 Image Processor: The EOS 80D's DIGIC 6 Image Processor ensures that images are captured, processed, and saved with remarkable speed. Using two 4-channel A/D converter front-end processing circuits, the camera can deliver continuous full resolution images at speeds of up to 7.0 fps.

Recording Media: The EOS 80D records images onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, including UHS-I cards. UHS Speed Class 3 cards are recommended if you plan to edit the movies you shoot. SD Speed Class 10 cards should be used for recording MOV format movies. For MP4 recording, SD Speed Class 6 or 4 cards can be used. The camera is also compatible with Eye-Fi cards, which allow you to automatically transfer captured images to a personal computer or upload them to an online service via a wireless LAN.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW (14-bit) formats in 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 or 1:1 aspect ratio. Simultaneous RAW+JPEG recording is also possible. In addition, the camera can record video in the MOV format (Video: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio: Linear PCM) or MP4 format (with AAC audio). Audio is recorded in stereo using the built-in microphone, or with an external stereo microphone (sold separately).

  • JPEG: You can choose from the following JPEG image sizes in each aspect ratio: Large, Medium, Small 1, Small 2, or Small 3. For each resolution, you can set the image compression to Fine or Normal (S2 and S3 are Fine only).
    • 3:2: L 6000x4000; M 3984x2656; S1 2976x1984; S2 1920x1280; S3 720x480
    • 4:3: L 5328x4000; M 3552x2664; S1 2656x1992; S2 1696x1280; S3 640x480
    • 16:9: L 6000x3368; M 3984x2240; S1 2976x1680; S2 1920x1080; S3 720x408
    • 1:1: L 4000x4000; M 2656x2656; S1 1984x1984; S2 1280x1280; S3 480x480
  • RAW Format: The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera CMOS sensor without further processing. The data is converted to digital data and recorded onto the card as is. RAW images can be processed in the camera and saved as JPEG images. You can choose from the following RAW image sizes in each aspect ratio: RAW, mRAW, or sRAW. You can also record a Large/Fine JPEG image along with a RAW, mRAW, or sRAW image simultaneously.
  • MOV Format (Video: H.264, Audio: Linear PCM): The camera records Full HD 1920 x 1080 (30p/25p/24p) with All-I compression (compresses one frame at a time for recording, making the movie more suitable for editing).
  • MP4 Format (Audio: AAC): You can record in Full HD 1920 x 1080 (60p/50p/30p/25p/24p), and HD 1280 x 720 (60p/50p/30p/25p). You can choose from two types of compression: IPB Standard (compresses multiple frames at a time) or IPB Light (records the movie at a bit rate slower than IPB Standard, resulting in smaller file size, and compatibility with larger range of playback systems).
Note: Video recording is only available in Live View Mode using the camera's LCD monitor.

Drive Modes: The Canon EOS 80D offers the following Drive (Shutter) modes.

  • Single Shooting: When you press the shutter button completely, one shot will be taken.
  • Continuous Shooting: While you press the shutter button completely, multiple shots will be taken continuously.
    • High-Speed: maximum 7 shots per second
    • Low-Speed: maximum 3 shots per second
  • Self-Timer: The camera will record an image 2 or 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button or using an optional remote controller.
  • Silent Shooting: Shoots a single image or continuously (3 fps) with less shooting sound
Note: The Canon EOS 80D is compatible with Canon IR wireless remote controls (RC-6, RC-1, or RC-5), so you can shoot remotely up to approximately 16.4 feet.

Interval Timer Shooting: The camera can be set to automatically record a series of single shots at a set interval. You can set the interval between shots between one second (00:00:01) and nearly 100 hours (99:59:59). The number of shots to be taken can be set between 1 and 99, or to 00 to keep shooting until you stop the timer. You can combine interval timer shooting with other functions, such as AEB, WB bracketing, multiple exposures, and HDR mode. Use of a tripod is highly recommended.

AF System: The EOS 80D features a 45-point, all cross-type Auto Focus system. All 45 points can be selected automatically or manually. In addition to single-point AF and 45-point automatic selection AF, you can manually choose one of nine zones for focusing (Zone AF), or groups of AF points at the left, center, or right (Large Zone AF).

AF Modes: You can select the AF mode to suit the shooting conditions or subject. In Basic Zone modes, the most suitable AF mode is set automatically. You can choose from the following AF modes:

  • One-Shot AF: suited for still subjects, the camera focuses only once
  • AI Servo AF: for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. The subject will be focused continuously while the shutter button is pressed halfway
  • AI Focus AF: switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving

Manual Focus: When autofocus fails due to conditions or lighting, you can focus manually by setting the switch on the lens to MF and turning the focus ring until the subject looks sharp in the viewfinder.

AF Assist Beam: The camera's built-in flash (or an attached external flash) will fire a series of flashes in a row to assist during auto-focusing in low-light situations. This AF-assist beam is effective up to approximately 13.1 feet (4 meters).

Shooting Modes: The EOS 80D offers multiple shooting modes, which are selectable on the top-mounted Mode Dial. The modes are divided into two zones (Creative Zone and Basic Zone), plus Custom Shooting Mode. To avoid accidentally changing the shooting mode, the mode dial has a lock, requiring you to hold down the lock-release button while you turn the dial. The Shooting Modes are as follows:

  • Creative Zone:
    • Program AE: A general-purpose shooting mode; the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness.
    • Shutter-priority AE: In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject.
    • Aperture-priority AE: In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness.
    • Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired.
    • Bulb: When the Bulb setting is selected, the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button completely, and closes when you release it. Bulb exposures can be used for night scenes, fireworks, or other subjects requiring long exposures.
  • Basic Zone:
    • Scene Intelligent Auto: A fully automatic mode; the camera analyzes the scene and sets the optimum settings automatically. It adjusts the focus automatically by detecting whether the subject is still or moving.
    • Flash Off: This mode can be used in places where flash photography is prohibited, such as museums. It can also be used for capturing the ambience of a scene, such as candlelight scenes.
    • Creative Auto: The Creative Auto mode enables you to easily change the picture's brightness, depth of field, and color tone; while the camera automatically adjusts the exposure.
    • Special Scene: The camera lets you choose an appropriate scene setting, and will automatically set the camera to the scene. You can choose from Food, Kids, Candlelight, Night Portrait, Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, and Sports.
    • Creative Filters: There are numerous Creative Filters that can be applied to images and saved as a new image: Grainy B/W, Soft Focus, Fish-eye Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Miniature Effect, Water Painting Effect, HDR Art Standard, HDR Art Vivid, HDR Art Bold, and HDR Art embossed.
  • Custom Shooting Mode: You can register the current camera settings, including the shooting mode, AF operation, menu settings, etc., for easy recall. There are 2 Mode Dial positions: C1 and C2.

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-5 stops in 1/3- or 1/2-stop increments, however, the viewfinder and LCD can only display the setting up to +/-3 stops.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots. If the Drive Mode is set to Single Shot, you will have to press the shutter button three times. If set to Continuous shooting, the three bracketed shots will be taken continuously.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

63-Zone Metering Sensor: The EOS 80D features 63-zone TTL open-aperture metering using 7560-pixel RGB, plus IR metering sensor. The following metering modes are available:

  • Evaluative Metering: The camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure
  • Partial Metering: Effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 6.0% of the frame at the center
  • Spot Metering: For metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 3.8% of the frame at the center
  • Center-weighted Average Metering: Metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene.

ISO Speed: You can set the ISO speed to suit the ambient light level. The ISO speed can be set automatically between ISO 100 and ISO 16000 in 1/3-stop increments, depending upon the shooting mode. For more control, you can manually set the ISO speed between ISO 100 and ISO 12800, or expand it to an equivalent of ISO 25600.

Built-in Flash: The Canon EOS 80D digital SLR camera features a built-in flash, which will pop up and fire automatically in Basic Zone modes. In the Creative Zone modes, you can pop up the flash manually when you wish to use the flash. When Red-eye Reduction is applied, a pre-flash will prevent the red-eye effect for most photos. Flash Exposure Compensation allows you to make the flash exposure darker or brighter +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

External Flash: You can mount an external flash unit to the camera's hot shoe. The camera is compatible with Canon's EX-series Speedlites (sold separately). The camera's built-in flash can work as a master unit with Canon Speedlites having a wireless slave feature and wirelessly trigger the Speedlite to fire.

Auto Lighting Optimizer: If an image comes out dark or the contrast is low, the brightness and contrast can be corrected automatically. With JPEG images, the correction is done when the image is captured.

Picture Style: By selecting a picture style you can achieve various effects matching your photographic expression or the subject. You can also adjust the Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation and Color tone of each Picture Style. Picture Style selections include:

  • Auto: The color tone is adjusted automatically to suit the scene, especially blue skies, greenery, and sunsets.

Supplied Lens

Lens: This EOS 80D kit comes with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.

Image Stabilizer (IS): The lens has a lens shift type Image Stabilizer. With the Image Stabilizer turned on, you can obtain sharp, natural-looking pictures in dim lighting without using flash or a tripod. The Image Stabilizer is turned on/off through a switch on the barrel of the lens.
