Our take on the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Kit

by Melanie Seibert
Canon

Today's point-and-shoot cameras make great pictures easier than ever

From baby's first steps, to that dream vacation in the islands, these cameras make it easy to capture life's greatest hits. Today's cameras have helpful automatic features, like face detection and scene recognition that make shooting more foolproof than ever. And they all have plenty of megapixels for detailed photos that stay sharp, even when you enlarge and print them.

Serious photographers are starting to look into digital, thanks to groundbreaking innovations like the Digital Rebel XT from Canon. This camera's advanced SLR (single-lens reflex) design provides lots of flexibility, for getting just the shot you want. And since it's digital, you can review your photos instantly, and transfer the ones you want to keep to your computer. The combination of photographic control and digital convenience is just one reason we think the Digital Rebel XT is one of the best consumer-grade cameras available anywhere.

What are some of the other reasons? Well, we're also excited about this camera's portability — it's smaller and about 35% lighter than last year's Digital Rebel. But while Canon has pared down this Rebel in size, they've actually beefed up its image capture capability with an impressive 8-megapixel sensor. That lets you snap amazingly precise photos, which the camera then saves to a separately available CompactFlash® card. You get enough detail to make large, vivid photo prints or even crop out sections and blow them up, without sacrificing image quality.

Plus, this sensor can handle ISO settings (or film speed equivalents) between 100 and 1600 — a very wide range. This allows you to precisely set the camera's sensitivity for a variety of lighting conditions. And the sensor's dynamic range permits faithful rendering of complex subjects, like sunny highlights on a subject with plenty of shadow.

Then there are other benefits, like Canon's DIGIC II processor, which ensures accurate colors and excellent responsiveness. The XT's startup time is just 0.2 seconds, and there's virtually no waiting between snapping photos. Of course, if you want even faster shooting than you could do yourself, the XT provides full-resolution continuous shooting mode — it'll snap about 3 frames per second with a 14-shot maximum burst. Another perk is intelligent, high-speed autofocus, which allows spontaneous capture of all kinds of subjects; it's easy to get an off-center portrait on a whim, without configuring a lot of manual settings.

But if you want those manual details, you've got them. You can take full control of exposure, white balance, sensitivity, and more. The included lens has a manual focus ring. And there are the other Canon EF lenses out there (over 50 of them) — all with impressive sharpness and color accuracy, and all fully compatible with the Digital Rebel XT.

Features

Recording Media: The EOS Digital Rebel XT records images on a Type I or Type II CompactFlash Card.

Note: A CompactFlash Card is not supplied with the camera.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW formats.

Viewfinder: The EOS Digital Rebel XT uses an eye-level pentamirror viewfinder with a dioptric adjustment knob. By adjusting the diopter to suit your eyesight (with or without eyeglasses), the viewfinder image will look clearer. During self-timer or remote control operation when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To prevent this, you can use the eyepiece cover to cover the eyepiece.

LCD Monitor: The 1.8" color LCD monitor on the back of the camera enables you to review and select recorded images and adjust various menu settings. The LCD monitor cannot be used as a viewfinder to shoot.

8.0 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: This large-format, high-resolution CMOS sensor captures 8.0 million pixels. As it captures images, the sensor amplifies each pixel's electric charge, for ultra-fast image scanning that's simply unmatched. A superior sensor design raises the maximum ISO speed while lowering image degradation during long exposures. The large sensor also has a 3:2 aspect ratio, traditional to 35mm film, for a familiar compositional feel.

DIGIC II Image Processor: The EOS Digital Rebel XT's sensor is driven by the DIGIC II Image Processor, which has been enhanced across the board with improvements in speed and image quality. Information captured by the sensor is processed and assembled into images of exceptional clarity and resolution. Consuming very little energy, DIGIC II works with the sensor to ensure natural colors, accurate white balance and speedy write times, letting you focus on taking pictures.

Image Resolution/Compression: You can choose from the following resolutions: Large (3456 x 2304 pixels), Medium (2496 x 1664 pixels), and Small (1728 x 1152 pixels). For each resolution, you can set the compression to Fine or Normal.

RAW File Format: The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera CMOS sensor without further processing. RAW images are compressed, but the compression is reversible so that a high-quality image can be obtained from the decompressed file without any loss of image quality. Whenever you use the EOS Digital Rebel XT, you can choose to have it record RAW files or JPEG files alone, or you can record a RAW file and a JPEG file simultaneously.

Shooting Modes: The EOS Digital Rebel XT offers 12 different shooting modes arranged in the following zones:

  • Basic Zone:

    • Full Auto: the camera automatically selects the settings

    • Image Zone:

      • Portrait: blurs the background to make the human subject stand out

      • Landscape: this mode is for wide scenic views, night scenes, etc.

      • Close-up: use this mode to take close-up shots of flowers, insects, etc.

      • Sports: for fast-moving subjects when you want to freeze the action

      • Night Portrait: this mode is for images of people at twilight or at night

      • Flash Off: disables the flash

  • Creative Zone:

    • Program AE: this is a general-purpose shooting mode. The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness.

    • Shutter-priority AE: in this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject

    • Aperture-priority AE: in this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness

    • Manual Exposure: in this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired

    • Automatic Depth-of-field AE: this mode is for obtaining a wide depth of field automatically between a near subject and far subject

7-point Autofocus System: The EOS Digital Rebel XT has a newly developed high-precision 7-point AF system for speedy and accurate focusing in any situation. You can easily choose your own point of focus or direct the camera to choose it automatically. You can even use predictive AF to ensure that moving subjects stay focused while you compose your shot. With a built-in dioptric adjustment mechanism and a new precision matte screen, achieving sharp focus is fast and easy with the Digital Rebel XT, no matter where or when you're taking pictures.

AF Modes: The camera automatically employs one of 3 AF systems to let you seize every photo opportunity with fast, accurate focus. One-Shot AF is suited for still subjects, while AI Servo AF is for moving subjects. AI Focus AF switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving.

ISO Speed: When shooting in Basic Zone modes, ISO speed is automatically set between 100 and 400 in 1-stop increments to suit the shooting conditions. In Creative Zone modes, ISO speed may be set manually through the LCD screen menu to 100, 200, 400, 800, or 1600.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings:

  • Auto: the camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions

  • Daylight: for recording outdoors on a bright day

  • Shade: counters strong blue tones in open shade on sunny days

  • Cloudy/Twilight/Sunset: for cloudy days, dusk and dawn

  • Tungsten: for incandescent illumination

  • White Fluorescent Light: eliminates typical green color casts

  • Flash: a starting point for studio strobes and Canon Speedlites

  • Custom: with custom white balance, you shoot a white object that will serve as the standard for the white balance. By selecting this image, you import its white balance data for the white balance setting.

  • White Balance Correction: you can correct the standard color temperature for the white balance setting

  • White Balance Auto Bracketing: with just one shot, three images having a different color tone can be recorded simultaneously. Based on the current white balance mode's standard color temperature, the white balance setting can be changed from 0 to +/-3 stops in whole-stop increments.

Color Space: The color space refers to the range of reproducible colors. With this camera, you can set the color space for captured images to sRGB or Adobe RGB. For normal images, sRGB is recommended. In the Basic Zone modes, sRGB will be set automatically.

Processing Parameters: The image you capture can be processed to look more vivid and sharp, or more subdued. You can choose from the following processing parameters:

  • Parameter 1: The image will have vivid and crisp colors. In the Basic Zone modes, all images will be taken in this way.

  • Parameter 2: The colors will be more subdued compared to Parameter 1.

  • Set 1, 2, or 3: This allows you to store up to 3 custom settings in memory. You can adjust the following settings: contrast, sharpness, saturation, and color tone.

  • B/W: The image will be black-and-white.

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

Bulb Exposures: When bulb is set, the shutter is open during the time you keep pressing the shutter button fully. Bulb is useful when a long exposure is necessary for capturing night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, etc.

AF-Assist beam with the Built-in Flash: Under low-light conditions, the built-in flash fires a brief burst of flashes when you press the shutter button halfway. This is to illuminate the subject to enable easier autofocusing.

FE Lock: FE (flash exposure) lock obtains and locks the correct flash exposure reading for any part of a subject.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: This is the camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions. After detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc., the camera sets the proper exposure.
  • Partial Metering: This is particularly effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc. This method uses a center area of approximately 9% of the screen.
  • Centerweighted Average Metering: The metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene.

Continuous Shooting Mode: During continuous shooting mode, the camera stores approximately 3 images per second. The maximum burst during continuous recording depends on the image recording quality:

Image Size Image Recording Quality Maximum Burst
3456 x 2304 Fine 14 images
Normal 36 images
2496 x 1664 Fine 27 images
Normal 110 images
1728 x 1152 Fine 80 images
Normal 780 images
RAW RAW 5 images
RAW + JPEG RAW + JPEG 4 images

Self-Timer: The camera will record an image 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button.

Auto Rotation: Vertical shots can be rotated automatically so that they are displayed upright during playback.

Image Review: The image can be displayed on the LCD monitor immediately after you shoot. The review time can be set to 2 seconds, 4 seconds, 8 seconds, or Hold, which keeps the image displayed on the LCD monitor.

Auto Playback: You can view all images on the Compact Flash Card one-by-one with the Auto Playback function. Each image is displayed on the LCD monitor for approximately 3 seconds.

Index Playback: This feature allows you to view nine images at once on the LCD monitor so that you can search for an image quickly.

Image Magnification: When viewing a still picture in single image playback mode, you can magnify the image from 1.5x to 10x.

Rotating Images: You can rotate an image by 90° or 270° clockwise in the LCD monitor.

Auto Power Off: To save battery power, the camera turns off automatically after a period of non-operation. The Auto Power Off time can be set to 1 minute, 2 minutes, 4 minutes, 8 minutes, 15 minutes, or 30 minutes.

Note: The Auto Power Off function will not activate in Auto Playback Mode.

Direct Print Function: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a CP-series printer that supports the Direct Print function. You can also connect the camera directly to certain Canon Bubble Jet printers. In this way, you can make prints directly from the camera without ever having to hook it up to a computer.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is a new standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

Exif Print (Exif 2.21): The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

DPOF Print Settings: On the CompactFlash Card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once, on optional Canon direct print function compliant printers, on PictBridge compliant printers, or at participating photo labs.

Optional AC Power: With the optional ACK700 AC adapter kit, you can connect the camera to a household power outlet and not worry about the battery becoming exhausted.

Optional Lens Compatibility: The EOS Digital Rebel XT is compatible with over 50 Canon EF lenses.

Optional Flash Compatibility: Canon EX-series Speedlites offer professional-quality illumination for virtually any subject, and the EOS Digital Rebel XT is compatible with the entire line (580EX, 420EX and 220EX), plus Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX for close-ups. You can also link several flashes to fire together wirelessly, with the optional Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2.

Actually a very practical camera.

Written By Danny, Lawrenceville, GA on Wednesday, September 20, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this camera primarily because I wanted a step up in image quality from my point and shoot camera. That was easily done- what I didn't expect was how much more practical it is than my previous camera.

The camera powers up and is ready to shoot instantly. The camera will take the pictures and store them as fast as you can shoot them- with no time lost to saving or processing. It's easily the fastest digital camera I've ever seen.

The supplied charger is fantastic- no long cables or superfluous design. Power consumption is also superlative, the battery lasts much longer than you'd think and the camera goes into power saving standby if you accidentally leave it on for a few minutes (which is something I do quite a bit, and would leave my old camera without a charge).

Finally, the menus on the camera are simple and straightforward. The menu design and layout are far more intuitive than any point and shoot camera I've ever seen.

I've only had one problem with the camera- occasionally the auto focus will only focus on one point regardless of where or how you aim the camera. It's only happened twice in a month of ownership and is easily fixed by resetting the camera in the toolbox menu (resetting does NOT erase your stored images, which is a nice touch).

All in all the speed, battery life, and the menu layout would alone make this a great camera. The fact that the image quality is superlative makes this the best buy in its price range.

Amazing Camera!!

Written By Jeremiah, Millmont, PA on Wednesday, August 09, 2006

I just purchased this camera on July 24, 2006. Crutchfield's customer service is by far the most excellent I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. My debit card would not go through for some reason and they were extremely helpful with helping me get the matter resolved and the camera was STILL shipped out the same day!

This camera is excellent! It performs like a champ right out of the box without having to read any instructions. I was taking amazingly sharp, clear pictures in just minutes. I also ordered the Canon 75-300 II USM lens. I cannot recommend this camera highly enough. I cannot wait until I have an opportunity to really give this camera a workout without having to worry about missed opportunities or blurry pictures.

First digital SLR

Written By Brian, Pebble Beach, CA on Saturday, June 24, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic out of the box performance. Easy set up for common photo scenarios. Has many more configurations than my 35mm Canon Rebel (non-digital) SLR, which is what I used before. Point and shoot digitals are nice for every day photos, but if you want them to stand out, this is the camera!

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT

Written By Jonathan, Hollywood Florida on Wednesday, January 18, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Canon EOS digital Rebel is absolutely the best digital SLR value out there. The camera feels great in the hand to operate, the control and flexibility you have is outstanding and the photo quality is incredible. I highly recommend it.

And by the way - Crutchfields customer service is by far the best I have ever experienced.
Thank you.

WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Written By RICHARD, TENNESSEE on Monday, January 09, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For those like me who demand SLR excellence in a digital camera, there is nothing better out there for the money than the Canon Rebel XT! The reviews I read of the camera before buying it from Crutchfield were all excellent, but they do not do the camera justice! The 8 megapixel resolution is truly incredible and with a 1 gigabyte memory card, you forget you are using a digital because delay between shots is minimal and storage is not a challenge.

Awesome camera!

Written By Tony, Torrance, CA on Friday, January 06, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm new to the DSLR arena and I just received this camera yesterday but I felt it necessary to give my first impression. My primary reason for buying this camera was because my current point & shoot Sony DSCP10 just wasn't making the grade when it came to taking pictures of my 7 month old son. It took beautiful portrait pictures but it could not capture any action because it took upwards of 5 seconds for the flash to re-energize which caused a lot of missed opportunities. I reviewed other point and shoot cameras from Sony and others thinking that as the price went up, this problem would go away. Not true. A lot of people were not happy with the speed of the higher priced point & shoots so I started looking at the DSLRs. I was able to go to my local camera shop to get the "feel" for the Canon as well as the Minolta Maxxum and get their professional opinion. I learned a lot and because the Canon felt more comfortable in the hand to both myself and my wife, we dicided to give it a try. What the heck, if we didn't like it, Crutchfield's return policy is top notch. Like a typical guy I tried to see how far I could get without reading the instructions. Most, if not all, digital cameras have basic functions that are similar. I was up and running in no time. I opened the instruction booklet and at the very beginning is a quick setup guide that gets you taking "auto mode" pictures quickly. I had my wife and son play around while I took pictures and she made the comment "wow, that camera takes pictures fast!" Not one blurry picture!!! I am VERY pleased so far and will report back as I learn how to really use this camera.

I got this camera for my 1st digital SLR and could'nt be happier... :-)This is my 4th digital cam, and have been taking pictures for 40+ yrs. I was afraid to switch over to digital for my really good pictures I print. I'm no longer worried...! It is awesome! With very easy to use features. My wife even shoots a pretty good picture!!! That in it self is pretty amazing...
The Staff at Crutchfield is OUTSTANDING!!! I have purched many things in the past from them and never had a problem and this time it finally happend. A very small glitch with the camera. Nothing most people would notice but I am picky. I called Crutchfield and they sent me a new one on the spot. Then I sent my 1st one back. I didnt miss a shot!!! Thanks to the service and the goods. I will be back!!!
