Our take on the Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS

by David Brown
Canon

Today's point-and-shoot cameras make great pictures easier than ever

From baby's first steps, to that dream vacation in the islands, these cameras make it easy to capture life's greatest hits. Today's cameras have helpful automatic features, like face detection and scene recognition that make shooting more foolproof than ever. And they all have plenty of megapixels for detailed photos that stay sharp, even when you enlarge and print them.

More than meets the eye

Looking for a pocket-sized camera with a little more power than a basic point-and-shoot? Check out the Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS, which packs a lot of impressive features into its super-compact body. The CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 processor combine to capture detailed, low-noise shots with speed and precision, even in low-light settings. The 24mm-equivalent wide-angle lens zooms to an impressive 10X, giving you the versatility to shoot large group shots or detailed close-ups. HD video is recorded in full 1080p resolution, so it will look great on your HDTV via the mini HDMI output (cable not included). And optical image stabilization keeps everything looking crisp and clear. These aren't the kind of specs you typically find on such a budget-friendly compact camera. And we haven't even mentioned Wi-Fi yet.

Easy, instant sharing with built-in Wi-Fi

It's easier than ever to share the high-quality photos and videos this camera delivers with friends and family. The PowerShot ELPH 330 has built-in Wi-Fi, so you can quickly get your latest shots out there for others to enjoy. Canon's free CameraWindow app for Apple® and Android™ lets you sync photos with your smartphone instantly via any Wi-Fi network. Or you can post photos directly to Canon's Image Gateway for sharing with Facebook and Twitter, no computer or smartphone required. With the PowerShot ELPH 330's host of on-board editing options, such as portrait retouching and filter effects, you'll be anxious to show off your creativity.

    Recording Features

3" LCD Monitor: The Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS has a 3.0" TFT LCD monitor, featuring 461,000 dots with approximately 100% picture coverage and a 5-level brightness adjustment. The Night Display feature automatically brightens the LCD monitor to suit the brightness of the subject, making it easier to frame the subject in dark conditions.

Built-in Wi-Fi: The camera has built-in Wi-Fi technology, allowing you to wirelessly connect and send images to other Wi-Fi capable devices such as computers, tablets, or smartphones using the downloadable Canon CameraWindow app (iOS version 5.1/6.0/6.1 or later, or Android version 2.3/4.0/4.1 or later). You can also share images and video through the Canon Image Gateway, on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. You can also print your photos on Wi-Fi compatible printers on wireless networks. It is compatible with IEEE 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN specifications.

GPS (via Wi-Fi): When the camera is connected to a smartphone using the CameraWindow app, GPS data, such as latitude, longitude, and elevation, can be added to images on the camera. The Coordinated Universal Time code (UTC) information can also be added to the image file to indicate the shooting date and time.

Image Sensor/Processor: The camera is equipped with a 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor with 12.8-million total pixels, and 12.1-million effective pixels.

Optics: The ELPH 330 HS has a 10x optical zoom lens with a 4.3-43.0mm focal length (35mm equivalent is 24-240mm).

Zoom: In addition to the 10x optical zoom, the camera features a 4x digital zoom. When used in combination, the total zoom is approximately 40x. The focal length when using the optical zoom and digital zoom together is approximately 24-960mm.

Digital Teleconverter: The focal length of the lens can be increased by an equivalent of 1.5x or 2.0x through the use of the Digital Teleconverter. The equivalent focal lengths of the lens (35mm equivalent) are 36-360mm when using the 1.5x digital teleconverter, and 48.0-480.0mm with the 2.0x teleconverter. The digital zoom and digital teleconverter cannot be used simultaneously.

Recording Media: The camera records still images or moving images with stereo audio on SD Memory Cards (2GB or less), SDHC Memory Cards (4GB to 32GB), and SDXC Memory Cards (32GB and higher). The camera does not have internal memory, nor does it include an SD card, so you will be required to obtain a memory card before recording.

Still Image Resolution/Compression: The ELPH 330 HS can record still images in JPEG format in 4 different sizes (Large, Medium 1, Medium 2, and Small) and 4 aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 3:2, and 1:1). For each resolution, you can set the compression to SuperFine or Fine. You can choose from the following resolutions:

      4:3 16:9 3:2 1:1
    Large 4000 x 3000 4000 x 2248 4000 x 2664 2992 x 2992
    Medium 1 2816 x 2112 2816 x 1584 2816 x 1880 2112 x 2112
    Medium 2 1600 x 1200 1920 x 1080 1600 x 1064 1200 x 1200
    Small 640 x 480 640 x 360 640 x 424 480 x 480

Movies: Movies can be recorded in MOV format (Image data: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio data: Linear PCM monaural) in High Definition at 1920 x 1080 (24 fps) or 1280 x 720 (30 fps). You can also shoot in Standard Definition at 640 x 480 pixels (30 fps). Recording will automatically stop when either the clip file size reaches 4 GB or the recording time reaches approximately 10 minutes in 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720, or 1 hour in 640 x 480.

Intelligent Image Stabilization: The ELPH 330 HS is equipped with Intelligent image stabilization (Intelligent IS). To correct the effects of camera shake, the camera automatically chooses one of the following IS modes for the shooting condition:

    • Continuous: always applied for still images
    • Panning: for still images when panning
    • Hybrid IS: for Macro shots
    • Dynamic IS: for movies, reducing strong camera shake as when shooting when walking
    • Powered IS: for movies, for subtle camera shake, such as when shooting movies at telephoto
    • None: no image stabilization

Face Detection Technology: The camera's Face Detection Technology finds and tracks the faces of moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, then delivers perfect focus. In addition, exposure, flash, and white balance are compensated, so that faces exhibit natural skin tones and backgrounds are properly exposed. Smart Shutter automatically shoots a picture after detecting a smile, even without pressing the shutter release button.

Focus Lock: If it becomes difficult to focus on the subject due to low contrast to the surroundings, close up and far away subjects in the same shot, or quickly moving subjects, you can choose to lock the focus or auto focus on an object at a similar distance, then shoot the picture after recomposing the shot.

Focusing Range: The camera features the following focus ranges (from the end of the lens):

    • Auto: 0.4" to infinity (W), 3.3' to infinity (T)
    • Normal: 2" to infinity (W), 3.3' to infinity (T)
    • Macro: 0.4" to 1.6' (wide)
    • Infinity: 9.8' to infinity (W/T)

Shooting Modes: You can choose between several shooting modes. In the Smart Auto mode, the camera will automatically select the best settings for the scene, detect and focus on faces, and set the color and brightness to optimal levels. The Hybrid Auto Mode lets you make a short movie of the day (digest movie). When you record a still image, the camera will automatically record a movie clip of the scene immediately before each shot. You can also choose from shooting modes that match specific scenes: Portrait, Handheld NightScene, Snow, and Fireworks. If you wish to add special effects to images while shooting, you can choose from Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Fish-Eye Effect, Miniature Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Monochrome, Soft Focus, Color Accent, and Color Swap.

Continuous Shooting: In the Program mode, the camera will continuously take pictures at approximately 2.4 frames per second, as long as you hold down the shutter button. The image size is not limited, and the focus and exposure are determined when you press the shutter button halfway. In High Speed Burst mode, the camera will continuously take pictures at approximately 6.2 frames per second at a lower resolution (1984 x 1488).

Stitch Assist: You can shoot a large subject or a wide landscape by taking multiple shots, and use the provided PhotoStitch software to combine them into a panorama.

Super Slow Motion: Fast-moving objects can be recorded for playback in slow motion. This is particularly helpful when recording certain sports. Thirty-second movie clips are recorded at very high frame rates and played back at a normal frame rate. Clips recorded at 240 fps at a resolution of 320 x 240 have a 4 minute playback time. Clips recorded at 120 fps at 640 x 480 play back in 2 minutes. Zooming is not available, and no sound is recorded during slow-motion recording.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

    • Evaluative: used for standard conditions. The area within the frame is divided into several zones and light is measured based on subject position, brightness, direct light and backlighting.
    • Center-Weighted Averaging: averages the exposure from the entire image, but places more weight on the subject at the center
    • Spot: meters the area within the spot AE point at the center of the LCD monitor or viewfinder

Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -2 to +2 in 1/3-step increments.

Locking the Exposure Setting (AE Lock): You can set the focus and exposure separately to shoot. When the exposure is set, you can lock the setting, then compose the scene and shoot. This is effective when the contrast is too strong between the subject and background, or when a subject is backlit. Flash Exposure Lock (FE Lock), just as with the AE lock, lets you lock the exposure for shooting with the flash.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings: Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, and Custom.

Flash Modes: The PowerShot ELPH 330 HS has a built-in flash with a range of 1.6' to 13' in Wide Angle and 3.3' to 6.6' in Telephoto. You can select Auto (flash fires in low light), On (flash always fires), Slow Synchro (illuminates subject in foreground while the slow shutter speed brightens the background not reached by the flash), or Off (flash doesn't fire). In the menu, you can turn on the Red-Eye Reduction lamp for the flash, and apply Red-Eye Correction to the images that have been taken.

ISO Speed: The ISO speed can be set Automatically (ISO Auto), or manually to ISO 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, or 6400. Lowering the ISO speed results in sharper images but there's a greater chance of subject or image blurring in certain shooting conditions. Raising the ISO speed results in a faster shutter speed, reducing blurred images. The images, however, will appear more coarse.

My Colors: You can choose the look and feel of the photos you take by using My Colors to add the following effects to the image you are currently recording or have already recorded: Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, B/W, Positive Film, Lighter Skin, Darker Skin, Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, Vivid Red, and Custom Color.

Self-Timer: The ELPH 330 HS utilizes a 10-second, 2-second, and a custom self-timer to allow the photographer to be included in the shot, or to avoid camera shake when using a tripod. The custom self-timer allows you to set the time delay to 1-15, 20, 25, or 30 seconds for up to 10 shots.

Wink Self Timer: In addition to the standard and custom self-timers, the ELPH 330 HS can be set to record an image of a person approximately two seconds after detecting a wink.

Face Self-Timer: The Face Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces, and makes the appropriate adjustments. When the Face Detection Self-Timer is set, the camera waits for the photographer's face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. The camera will shoot, two seconds after the new face is detected.

    Playback, Editing and Print Functions

Slide Show: Images stored on a memory card can automatically be displayed one-by-one using the Slide Show function. You can set the playback time for each image, and the transition effects when switching between images. If desired, you can repeat the slide show automatically.

Index Display: This feature allows you to view 4, 9, 16, 36, or 100 images at once on the LCD monitor so that you can search for an image quickly. Movies cannot be played in the index playback mode.

Magnifying Images: Using the zoom button, you can magnify a photo up to 10x. Once zoomed in, you can use the "arrow" buttons to move around the displayed area.

Playback Displays: You can choose from three types of displays:

    • Simple Information: screen includes basic information about the image
    • Detailed Information: screen include a histogram display as well as detailed information about the settings used when the image was captured.
    • Focus Check: magnifies the area of a recorded image that was inside the AF frame so you can check the focus.

Resizing Images: You can save images a lower recording pixel setting than the original image, saving the resized image as a separate file.

Trimming: You can cut out a portion of a recorded image and save it as a new image file.

Protecting Images: The protect feature allows you to protect important images from accidental erasure. You can protect images by the image itself or select All Images.

PictBridge: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer of any brand. You can also connect the camera directly to certain Canon SELPHY compact photo printers and PIXMA inkjet photo printers. In this way, you can make prints directly from the camera without having to connect to a computer.

    Battery Information

Power Requirements: The Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS is powered by the supplied NB-4L Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery pack (3.7V / 2.9 Wh / 760 mAh). A fully charged battery pack can provide power for up to approximately 220 shots (300 in Eco mode), 45 minutes of movie shooting time, or 4 hours of playback time. The NB-4L is charged in approximately 1.5 hours in the supplied CB-2LV battery charger.

Date/Time Battery: The camera uses a backup battery for maintaining the date and time data for approximately 3 weeks. The backup battery charges in approximately 4 hours while a charged main battery (NB-4L) is inserted, or the camera is connected to an external AC adapter.

AC Adapter: If you need to operate the camera for long periods of time during a slide show or when connected to a printer, it is recommended to use the optional ACK-DC60 AC Adapter Kit.

Power Saving Functions: The camera is equipped with the following power saving functions:

    • Eco Mode During Shooting: The screen will darken when the camera is not used for approximately 2 seconds, and will turn off approximately 8 seconds later. After three minutes of inactivity, the camera will turn itself off.
    • Auto Power Down During Playback: The camera power down approximately 5 minutes after the last control is accessed on the camera.
Note: The Power Saving Function will not activate during a slide show or while the camera is connected to a computer.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI: The ELPH 330 HS has a mini-HDMI output for connecting it to an HDTV. A mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable, such as the optional Canon HTC-100 is required. When the camera is connected to an HDMI-CEC-compatible TV, you can control the camera's functions with the TV remote.

A/V Out / Digital Terminal: The camera has a Mini-B Version 2.0 USB terminal to allow you to connect the camera to a compatible computer or compatible Canon printer via the supplied IFC-400PCU USB cable. This USB 2.0 Hi-Speed-compatible terminal allows you to rapidly download images to your computer or printer. You can also connect the camera to a TV (via composite video and monaural audio) using the optional AVC-DC400 A/V cable in the same terminal. The A/V output can be set to NTSC or PAL as needed.

    Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS

Written By jcrossbow, Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday, July 23, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Item arrived from Crutchfield as promised. This camera has SO many features and at first it was a bit overwhelming. After going through the manual on CD however, I got the feel for how it worked and found that it takes very good pictures in Auto mode or the P (program) mode which allows your own choices in settings. I especially like the 10x optical zoom and the wider angle capability. The flash doesn't do the greatest job when using the zoom in low light conditions but I suspect that is the case with most cameras. Have been doing a lot of experimenting with zooming, videos, menu items etc. and the battery seems to last a reasonably long time. It also has fast recharge time. Not much more than an hour. There is also a movie digest feature which is chosen by sliding a switch in the back to the green icon. It then shoots in auto mode in addition to taking a quick video clip of the picture you are taking. If you want just Auto mode without the movie digest you have to go into the menu and choose Auto. That was confusing to me at first.
    Pros:
Nice style and display screen, small and lightweight, nice quality pictures, fast startup, battery life quite long and fast recharge time, good video and good macro shots. The video mode is chosen by the push of a red button on the back of the camera at anytime without having to turn a thumbwheel to choose that mode or go into the menu. Haven't tried the WiFi setup yet so no opinion on that. In general I am very pleased with this camera except for the one CON listed below.
    Cons:
A lot of settings , even choosing between auto or P(program mode), are done by going into the menu with the push of a button on the back and then scrolling the menu to choose what you want. A bit cumbersome and the buttons are flush to the camera surface and on the small side so someone with large fingers may have trouble with this. My older Sony had a thumbwheel on back to choose shooting modes etc. which was a bit more handy.

    Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS

Written By Marcy P, Ashburn, VA on Tuesday, June 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this camera. Easy to use.
    Pros:
Intuitive, easy to carry around, great pics with little effort. What a point and shoot should be.
    Cons:
Only issue I had was with the flash not going off in situations I thought it should have. Flash went off I would say about 95% of the time as it should. Could also be user error but not sure at this point.

    Great little camera

Written By Josh G, Charlottesville, VA on Wednesday, May 08, 2013

    Great little camera.
    Pros:
    - Takes great pictures. - Lots of cool features as well as full manual functions. - Big bright screen. - Very easy to use as a simple point and shoot. - Wi-fi feature is awesome.
    Cons:
    - Only 12 MP while some cameras are 16-18 MP these days. - Wi-fi is tedious to set up, but once it's working, it's quite easy to use. - Would be nice if it were touch screen, but the lack of it made the price much more reasonable.

    Canon Elph 330 HS

Written By Canonophile, NYC on Thursday, March 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace an earlier model Canon point and shoot that was stolen. I love this one too -- for the excellent photo quality and the very small size, which means that when I come upon a scene worth photographing, the camera is in my pocket or pocket book instead of at home. (My SLR is going on Craigslist.) The WiFi capability is not intuitive -- will have to take a minute to look into that.
    Pros:
excellent photo quality small and light weight
