Our take on the Canon EOS 40D

by Dave Bar
Canon

Develop your photography hobby

You don't have to be an expert photographer to use an SLR — they all offer easy automatic shooting. Because of their build quality and the physics of good glass and large sensors, even their built-in automatic settings will get you better pictures than most point-and-shoots or mobile devices. But experienced photographers and budding hobbyists can get more creative by manually adjusting settings like aperture and shutter speed. SLRs let you expand your shooting options with additional lenses and flashes to suit just about any situation. If you'd like to record the occasional video, look for a model with high-def movie mode.

Shoot like a pro with Canon's remarkable EOS 40D. This feature-rich SLR camera offers the ruggedness, speed, and versatility needed to satisfy even the most demanding photo enthusiasts. Its powerful 10.1-megapixel image sensor and sophisticated image processor work together to deliver highly accurate and detailed photographs. And it comes supplied here with a top-notch Canon 28-135mm image stabilizing zoom lens. This combo offers plenty of advanced shooting options, plus the superior low-light performance and blur-fighting capability provided by image stabilization technology.

Self-cleaning 10.1-megapixel image sensor
At the heart of the 40D is Canon's advanced CMOS sensor. The CMOS design provides a wide dynamic range, allowing you to preserve subtle photographic details of complex subjects, like sunny highlights on a subject with plenty of shadow. Canon also engineered it with special on-chip noise reduction to produce less visible grain, resulting in sharper images over a wide range of ISO (light sensitivity) settings. You'll enjoy clean-looking shots even in low-light shooting conditions. Plus, an integrated cleaning system ensures your images remain spot-free by using ultrasonic vibration to remove dust particles from the sensor.

Lifelike color and fast shooting
Canon's sophisticated image processor delivers natural-looking color and accurate white balance levels. It also allows astonishingly fast continuous shooting — you can capture up to 75 high-res photos in a single burst at a blazing 6.5 frames per second. Save your images to optional CompactFlash® memory cards (no memory included).

3" LCD with live view capability
The feature-rich 40D offers plenty of other cool extras as well. You get a huge 3" LCD screen that provides clear views for sharing pictures with friends. It also boasts a live view mode that lets you compose photos on-screen in real time — just like you would with a point-and-shoot cam. And you can easily magnify any portion of the image by 5X or 10X for more precise manual focusing. Canon's colorful menu system provides easy, intuitive camera operation.

Rugged SLR design
Canon wraps all this versatile technology in a durable magnesium alloy body. This gives the cam a solid, substantial feel and protects it from the rigors of heavy use. And the 40D's SLR design means you can expand your shooting options. There are dozens of impressively sharp Canon EF and EF-S lenses, and several powerful external flashes available separately that are all fully compatible with this camera.

Features

Viewfinder: The EOS 40D uses an eye-level pentaprism viewfinder with a dioptric adjustment knob. By adjusting the diopter to suit your eyesight (with or without eyeglasses), the viewfinder image will look clearer. During self-timer or remote control operation when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To prevent this, you can use the eyepiece cover to cover the eyepiece.

Live View LCD Monitor: The EOS 40D features a 3" Live View TFT color LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 pixels which allows you to view and shoot real-time images. The LCD monitor offers 100% viewing coverage and 7 brightness levels to choose from. The Live View Function enables viewing your subjects directly on the camera's 3" LCD monitor. The camera allows you to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focusing and with one press of the AF-on button, the camera gives instant access to Auto Focus. You can also choose a grid overlay for the LCD screen to help you capture your pictures. In a Studio, the Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through the EOS 40D's USB connection, or wirelessly or via Ethernet with the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3A (sold separately) attached. In addition, the Live View Function adds a new method for near-silent shooting, with two silent shooting modes. Mode 1 allows continuous photo shooting while Mode 2 allows single photo shooting.

Note: Live View shooting does not work when the camera is in one of the Basic Zone modes.

10.5 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: Canon's large-area CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers 10.5 million total pixels and 10.1 million effective pixels. This APS-C size sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. The EOS 40D has an extensive ISO range (from 100 to 1600 plus ISO 3200 in extended mode), which is selectable in 1/3-stop increments. The sensor features a newly developed set of narrow-gap microlenses and noise reduction circuits to improve performance at high ISO values, and optimized photodiode configurations for improved performance at all ISO values. This results in larger, clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start.

DIGIC III Image Processor: Developed to maximize performance between the capture and recording stages of digital photography, the EOS 40D's DIGIC III processor is faster and more powerful than before. The latest-generation DIGIC III Image Processor works in concert with Canon's CMOS sensor to achieve even higher levels of performance. The entire electronic system is totally re-designed, giving the camera its incredible combination of speed and image quality. Digital noise is significantly reduced in shadow areas, and color reproduction is superior.

14-Bit A/D Conversion: 14-bit A/D conversion means fine transitions from light to dark tones, and a significant drop in digital and shadow noise.

Image Recording Format: The camera records 3:2 still images in JPEG and RAW (14-bit) formats.

JPEG Image Resolution/Compression: You can choose from the following JPEG resolutions: Large (3888 x 2592 pixels), Medium (2816 x 1880 pixels), and Small (1936 x 1288 pixels). For each resolution, you can set the compression to Fine or Normal.

RAW and sRAW File Format: The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera CMOS sensor without further processing. RAW images are compressed, but the compression is reversible so that a high-quality image can be obtained from the decompressed file without any loss of image quality. The sRAW file format records an image with 2.5 megapixels less than the RAW format. As with RAW images, sRAW images can be developed and adjusted with the provided software.  You can choose from the following RAW resolutions: RAW (3888 x 2592) or Small RAW (1936 x 1288).

Simultaneous Record: Whenever you use the EOS 40D, you can choose to have it record RAW files or JPEG files alone, or you can record RAW files and a JPEG files simultaneously.

Recording Media: The EOS 40D records images on a Type I or Type II CompactFlash Card.

Note: No CompactFlash Card is supplied with the camera.

Rugged Exterior Body: The EOS 40D's exterior is constructed with lightweight and ultra-rigid magnesium-alloy that fits perfectly in your hand.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System: Dust that settles on the sensor surface of the camera is removed using ultrasonic vibration. This Self Cleaning Sensor Unit routine is automatically activated whenever the camera is powered on or off. (It can also be manually activated.) A special collar positioned around the sensor collects the loosened dust. Dust particles can also be automatically removed via software. By shooting a plain white subject, the photographer can acquire dust position data that is transmitted along with the image (whether JPEG or RAW). Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) version 3.1 or higher software can then be used to manually or automatically erase the dust spots.

Optics: The EOS 40D comes supplied with a standard 28-135mm zoom lens (16 elements in 12 groups) with an integrated Image Stabilizer and high zoom ratio (3x). With the Image Stabilizer turned on, you can obtain sharp, natural-looking pictures in dim lighting without using a flash or a tripod. The lens uses an inner focusing system with a ring-type USM for swift, silent autofocus and full-time manual focus. The lens' closest focusing distance is 20 in. (50cm).

Shooting Modes: The EOS 40D offers 12 different shooting modes arranged in the following zones:

  • Basic Zone:

    • Full Auto: the camera automatically selects the settings

    • Image Zone:

      • Portrait: blurs the background to make the human subject stand out

      • Landscape: this mode is for wide scenic views, night scenes, etc

      • Close-up: use this mode to take close-up shots of flowers, insects, etc

      • Sports: for fast-moving subjects when you want to freeze the action

      • Night Portrait: this mode is for images of people at twilight or at night

      • Flash Off: disables the flash

  • Creative Zone:

    • Program AE: this is a general-purpose shooting mode, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness

    • Shutter-priority AE: in this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject

    • Aperture-priority AE: in this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness

    • Manual Exposure: in this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired

    • Automatic Depth-of-field AE: this mode is for obtaining a wide depth of field automatically between a near subject and far subject

9-Point Autofocus System: The camera features a high-precision 9-point wide area autofocus that uses cross-type points with lenses f/5.6 or faster, enabling the camera to focus faster, more accurately, and in ever more complex lighting. Each of the nine AF points has this cross-type coverage. In addition, the EOS 40D incorporates a diagonally mounted, high-precision cross-type sensor at the center AF point that is sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines when fast lenses (f/2.8 or faster) are used, for added accuracy and precision with these wide-aperture lenses. All focus points can be chosen automatically, or accessed using the EOS 40D's intuitive, thumb operated Multi-Controller

AF Modes: The camera employs one of 3 AF systems to let you seize every photo opportunity with fast, accurate focus. One-Shot AF is suited for still subjects, while AI Servo AF is for moving subjects. AI Focus AF switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving.

ISO Speed: When shooting in Basic Zone modes, ISO speed is automatically set between 100 and 800 to suit the shooting conditions. In Creative Zone modes, ISO speed may be set manually through the LCD screen menu from 100 to 1600 in 1/2-stop increments. When ISO Expansion is turned on, you can also select an ISO speed of 3200.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings:

  • Auto: the camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions, color temperature 3000-7000 K

  • Daylight: for recording outdoors on a bright day, color temperature 5200 K

  • Shade: counters strong blue tones in open shade on sunny days, color temperature 7000 K

  • Cloudy/Twilight/Sunset: for cloudy days, dusk and dawn, color temperature 6000 K

  • Color Temperature: manually set color temperature from 2800-10000 K in 100 K increments

  • White Balance Correction: you can correct the standard color temperature for the white balance setting, has the same effect as using a color temperature conversion or a color compensating filter, each color can be corrected to one of nine levels

  • White Balance Auto Bracketing: with just one shot, three images having a different color tone can be recorded simultaneously, based on the current white balance mode's standard color temperature, the white balance setting can be changed from 0 to +/-3 stops in whole-stop increments

Color Space: The color space refers to the range of reproducible colors. With this camera, you can set the color space for captured images to sRGB or Adobe RGB. For normal images, sRGB is recommended. In the Basic Zone modes, sRGB will be set automatically.

Picture Style: By selecting a picture style you can achieve various effects. You can also adjust each preset to create custom settings.

  • Standard: image looks vivid, sharp, and crisp

  • Portrait: for nice skin tones, the image looks slightly sharp and crisp, color tone can be adjusted to change skin tone

  • Landscape: vivid blues and greens, very sharp and crisp image

  • Neutral: natural colors and subdued images, no sharpness applied

  • Faithful: when the subject is photographed under a color temperature of 5200 K, the color is adjusted colorimetrically to match the subject's color, no sharpness applied

  • Monochrome: black and white

  • Custom: starting with any of the presets above, you can create three custom picture style settings by changing the sharpness, contrast, color saturation, color tone, filter effect (monochrome), or color toning (monochrome)

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

Bulb Exposures: When bulb is set, the shutter is open during the time you keep pressing the shutter button fully. Bulb is useful when a long exposure is necessary for capturing night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, etc.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in E-TTL II autoflash obtains high-precision and consistent flash shots. You can set the exposure compensation for the flash to +/- 2 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

AF-Assist beam with the Built-in Flash: Under low-light conditions, the built-in flash fires a brief burst of flashes when you press the shutter button halfway. This is to illuminate the subject to enable easier autofocusing.

FE Lock: FE (flash exposure) lock obtains and locks the correct flash exposure reading for any part of a subject.

Red-Eye Reduction: Using the camera's Red-Eye reduction lamp before taking a flash picture will reduce the common phenomenon of red-eye effect.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: the camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure
  • Partial Metering: effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 9% of the frame at the center
  • Spot: for metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 3.5% of the frame at the center
  • Centerweighted Average Metering: metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene

Continuous Shooting Mode: During continuous shooting mode, the camera stores approximately 6.5 images per second (high speed) or 3 images per second (low speed). The maximum burst during continuous recording depends on the image recording quality and memory space:

Incredible results

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this camera a few months ago and I have enjoyed the results. I'm expanding my photography thanks to this camera. I have the kit lense and added a 70-200mm lens. The picture are clear and crisp. The camera is easy to use out of the box, but it will allow you to grow as you develop your style. If you are looking for a great camera such as the 5D, but need to spend less, then the 40D is for you.

Great Canon Camera

Written By Joe, Charleston on Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife and I purchased the Canon 40D a few months ago, and after putting it through the paces would give it the full 5-Star review. It's awesome. If you're into sports and want fast action shooting, it's the best. 6.5 frames per second has got to be one of the best of all digital cameras. Also, the three inch screen is tops - it makes it very easy to review photos and to use the live preview feature. Iso and white balance are easy to adjust off auto modes. And the battery on a full charge seems to last forever. We are really, really happy with the purchase and would recommend it to anyone.
