Our take on the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens

by Dave Bar
Canon
CANON AUTHORIZED DEALER

Mount the EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens to your Canon SLR camera and capture sharp, crystal-clear images. Its large maximum aperture of f/1.8 gathers lots of light to give you a bright view through your viewfinder, plus it means you can use faster shutter speeds to "freeze" moving subjects. This lens is also ideal for taking great-looking photos indoors without a flash — its 50mm focal length makes it a perfect choice for portraits and all-around picture taking. And its compact, lightweight design won't weigh you down during extended shooting sessions.

Highlights:

  • 50mm f/1.8 standard lens
  • compatible with all Canon digital and film SLR cameras
  • effective focal length:
    • 50mm with full-frame sensor digital or 35mm film cameras
    • 80mm with APS-C sensor cameras

Features

Overview: The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is a compact and high-performance, standard telephoto lens. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens. This lightweight EF lens weighs in at a mere 4.6 oz. (130g).

Compatibility: The EF 50mm f/1.8 II is an EF Canon lens which means it is compatible with all Canon digital SLRs (those that accept EF and  EF-S lenses, plus those that accept EF only; which would be the Full-frame EOS 5D Mark II), as well as Canon EOS film SLRs.

Lens Construction: The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens features a lens construction with 6 elements in 5 groups.

Diagonal Angle Of View: This Canon standard telephoto lens provides a diagonal angle of view of 46°.

Auto/Manual Focus: To shoot in Autofocus mode, set the focus mode switch on the lens to "AF". To manually focus the camera, set the switch to "MF", and focus by turning the focusing ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless of the focus mode.

Optional Accessories: You can attach optional filters to the filter mounting thread on the front of the lens. You can also attach an optional lens hood.

This lens will change the way you take pictures

Written by Zak Billmeier, Staff Writer - Creative, on 1/24/2012 1:06:00 PM

I started out using the kit lens that came with my first DSLR, which was fine but I found myself shooting indoors a lot, where the kit lens doesn't do so well. So I picked up this budget-minded wonder, and wow — I couldn't believe what happened.

First off, I started seeing the nice blurry backgrounds that draw attention to a photo subject. Portraits, still-lifes, anything.

Second, my indoor shots got a lot cleaner, because the camera didn't need to jack up the ISO so much. Third, this lens is so sharp when you stop down a little. I am not exaggerating when I tell you I left this lens on for a solid year after I bought it. Sharpness isn't everything, but it's nice.

Fourth, since it doesn't zoom, I had to kind of frame shots in my mind and move around to get them. I got in close. For the first time, I really thought about shots before taking them. Frankly, this lens made me a better photographer because it taught me to see a little better.

Some tips to squeeze the best out of this lens:

  • - Stop it down a little. It's a little soft at f/1.8 (to be expected), and even dialing it back to f/2 helps a little. I really like it at f/2.8-f/4 for portraits.
  • - f/5.6-f/8 is the sharpness sweet spot. But it starts getting sharp at f/2.8.
  • - When shooting portraits and pets, always get that nearest eye in focus!

Enjoy! I cannot think of a better bang-for-your buck for Canon shooters. If you have kids, you're really going to love it.

I bought a Canon T3i with no lens and bought this lens to start out with. The lens performs excellently. I am able to take pictures quickly even in very low light situations with no flash.

Awesome portrait lens for beginners

Written By Melanie, San Antonio, TX on Friday, December 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I checked this lens out after an online tutorial recommended it. What a great value! A no-brainer for beginners and hobbyists. This lens takes sharp portraits. If you're a pro, you might want something fancier, but for the rest of us it's totally worth the price.
Pros:
Affordable, sharp photos, nice bokeh
Cons:
Might feel cheap to a pro

Shipping was fast and easy. The only problem I had with this lens was that I have found a scratch in the middle of the lens. I am pretty disappointed but oh well ...

Get this lens NOW

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have entry level skills but this was recommended from a pro as a great start. Bought with the T2i and can tell you it takes amazing low light portraits with blurry backgrounds. I love to cook and take pictures of my food often. They come out looking like a pro did it. Also use it to film short videos with amazing depth of field and again, could be somethign you see in the theatre. Yes it is cheaply made plastic and keep in mind it is a prime lens so there is no zoom. You are really only getting some closeups and portraits with this. Good second lens to the kit lens to start.

Great Lens

Great lens for taking photos with blurred backgrounds. Makes me look like a pro even though most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing. Auto focus is a little noisy, but for this price you can't beat it.

Great lense for the price

Written By Young J, New York, NY on Thursday, April 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great for portraits and low lighting, but be prepared for greater distance
between you and your subject should you pair this with a T2i or 7D (it'll be
85mm in practice due to the APS-C sensor).

In absolute terms, the focus is somewhat slower than the higher end 50mm's, but
for the price and performance it offers, it's a steal.

Kudos to Crutchfield, who went out of their way to make good on a delivery that
got botched by UPS. There are very few companies that I know of that care this
much about their customers (and have actual human beings pick up the phone
instead of being routed around some voice activated neverland).

Open box

I bought the open box model from Crutchfield and couldn't be happier with the lens. It was in
mint condition, with super clean glass. Great for low light shooting, I have it paired with a T2i
and it works without a hitch.

Great portrait and low light lens for the money. Got it for my daughter's new Canon T2i and
she is thrilled. The baby will be born soon and she will use it to capture those precious
moments at birth and for years to come. It focuses fast, has great detail and good bokeh.
