Our take on the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens

CANON AUTHORIZED DEALER

Pair your Canon digital SLR with this high-quality 50mm lens to capture crisp, sparkling-clear images. Its large maximum aperture of f/1.4 gathers lots of light to give you an ultra-bright view through your viewfinder, plus it means you can use faster shutter speeds to "freeze" moving subjects. This lens is also ideal for taking great-looking photos at twilight, or indoors without a flash. Its 50mm focal length also makes it an excellent choice for portraits and all-around picture taking.

Need a case for your camera's lens? Check out Tamrac's lens compatibility chart to find a case that fits (requires Adobe® Reader®).

    Features

Overview: The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a standard/medium telephoto lens featuring superb quality and portability. Two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics eliminate astigmatism and suppress astigmatic difference. Crisp images with little flare are obtained even at the maximum aperture. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is an ideal lens to accompany a zoom when shooting in low-light conditions. It is the only lens in the Canon EF System line-up to combine the extra-small Micro USM and still provide full-time manual focusing.

Compatibility: The EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is an EF Canon lens which means it is compatible with all Canon digital SLRs (those that accept EF and  EF-S lenses, plus those that accept EF only; which would be the Full-frame EOS 5D Mark II), as well as Canon EOS film SLRs.

Lens Construction: The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens features a lens construction with 7 elements in 6 groups.

Diagonal Angle Of View: This Canon standard telephoto lens provides a diagonal angle of view of 46°.

Ultrasonic Motor (USM): With the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), you can expect fast and quiet focusing capability.

Auto/Manual Focus: To shoot in Autofocus mode, set the focus mode switch on the lens to "AF". To manually focus the camera, set the switch to "MF", and focus by turning the focusing ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless of the focus mode.

Optional Accessories: You can attach optional filters to the filter mounting thread on the front of the lens. You can also attach an optional lens hood.

This is a fantastic portrait lens if you shoot with a Canon crop camera (60D, 7D, Rebels, etc). The 50mm focal length looks like 80mm on the small sensor.

The f/1.4 maximum aperture lets you shoot in dim rooms. It's great for grabbing candids at parties and weddings where a flash may be out of the question.

It starts getting sharp at f/2, and by f/2.8 it's quite sharp. Just an outstanding lens for a good price.

Focus is fast and silent. All Canon's "USM" lenses are.

It's a great "normal" lens on full-frame and film cameras. And it's fairly compact and lightweight.

If I could only have one lens for the rest of my life, this one might be it.

    Incredible

Written By John DOH, The USA on Monday, April 11, 2011

Really? I'm the only person to review this sweet lens? Well I'm glad I get to
    be the first.

Deciding between this lens or the 1.8 canon 50mm?
    1.4 if you
    Value great quality build
    Value better bokeh (background blur)
    Want sharper pics?
Want a reliable lens that feels like its not going to break
WANT A LONG TERM INVESTMENT + RESELL VALUE (incase you want to upgrade!)

    1.8 if you
Don't mind the higher likelihood of the lens breaking
Want great sharp pics but NOT AS SHARP
Want a lens that feels flimsy
Want to be in fear of your lens breaking

If you are deciding between these two just buy the 1.4. Seriously. Look if
you're trying to capture memories of your life it's just a couple more hundred
for capturing those moments of life and sharing them with others for the rest of
    your picture taking days.

Written from personal experience. I bought the 1.8 used it for a month and said
goodbye I personally couldn't keep it bc I wanted reliability and an even better
    picture!

Honestly the price is reasonable ESPECIALLY ON CRUTCHFIELD, they have great
competitive pricing, quality customer service, incredible support and overall
customer experience. I will choose crutchfield whenever I can (I promise they
dont pay me they're just that great to their customers they make you feel your
patronage is valued it was the icing on the top of buying this lens)

    Amazing Lens & Amazing Seller!

I wanted a nice portrait lens just for casual, leisurely use. I am an amateur
photographer who loves taking photos of friends and people and after several
talks with some friends, I decided on this 50mm lens.

Man, I have never been disappointed with this lens. All my shots, even in low
lighting conditions, come out much more crisp than before and the focus and
clarity is mind-blowing. A must-have for all photographers!!!
