Make the rest of the world go away
If you're a candidate for owning this lens, you'll probably know it. It's definitely a specialist. If you have a need for shooting in very low light, or you want to see a focus difference between an earlobe and an eyelash in a tight close-up, you'll enjoy your time with this lens immensely. Its focal plane (the slice of space in your camera's view that's actually in focus) at f/1.2 is almost paper-thin. While the in-focus parts of your portraits will be exquisitely sharp, your backgrounds will melt away to put your subjects into a world of their own. Wedding photographers will adore this lens, as it creates a sense of poetry and emotional depth in portraits that's hard to equal.
This lens is large and not exactly light. Its framework exists to support the sizeable precision-machined glass elements necessary for a lens this light-sensitive. But the attention paid to the optics shows up in every picture, with outrageously sharp reproduction from edge to edge, even at f/1.2.

Overview: The Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM lens is an L-series, fixed length, medium telephoto lens for Canon EOS cameras. The lens has a high-precision, large-diameter aspheric lens element for excellent imaging performance, even at maximum aperture. The high-speed autofocus and circular aperture hole gives you the narrow depth of field and soft background blur so loved by portrait and wedding photographers. The lens includes the LP1219 Lens Case and the ES-79 II Lens Hood.
Ultrasonic Motor (USM): The EF85mm lens is equipped with a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for silent, high-speed auto focusing. Combined with a high-speed CPU and optimized algorithms, the lens achieves an auto focusing speed approximately 1.8 times faster than the original EF 85mm lens.
Focusing Ring: Regardless of whether you're in manual or auto focus mode, the full-time focusing ring always works. This means you can auto focus on a subject, but manually change the focus by turning the focusing ring.
Focus Mode Switch: You can switch between Auto Focus and Manual Focus using the two-way AF/MF switch on the barrel of the lens.
Lens Hood: The lens kit includes the ES-79 II lens hood to keep unwanted light out of the lens, and protects the front of the lens. The hood can be reverse-mounted on the lens for storage. When installed, the hood adds approximately 2" to the overall length of the lens.
Optional Filters/Extension Tubes: The EF85mm lens has a 72mm mounting thread on the front of lens for attaching screw-on type filters. You can attach optional Extension Tube EF12 II or EF25 II for magnified shots or a 500D (72mm) Close-up Lens for close-up photography.
