Our take on the Canon HV20

by Tara W.

Record your home movies in smooth, lifelike high-definition video. Canon's HV20 captures widescreen, high-def footage that looks great on your HDTV, using standard Mini DV camcorder tapes. Scenes from your recent vacation, child's soccer game, or family wedding will come alive with color, clarity and detail.

Stunning high-definition video
The HV20 features a sophisticated image sensor and an enhanced high-definition video lens for superb images. A 10X optical zoom gives you great-looking closeups of faraway subjects. The advanced color filter processes reds, greens and blues separately for richer, more accurate colors. This cam can also record in standard-definition digital mode for videos that look great on just about any TV. An HDMI output lets you send high-definition video and digital audio to a compatible television or audio/video component through one convenient cable.

Helpful recording extras
Canon added special features to make it easy to capture high-quality video, too. Instant Auto Focus allows your shots to snap into focus seconds faster than with most other camcorders. This means you won't waste precious moments waiting for auto focus to adjust as you zoom in on your subject. Optical image stabilization lets the camcorder correct the effects of an unsteady hand without degrading the quality of your recordings.

The HV20 lets you choose from multiple zoom speeds for more control over your closeups. Then there's Night Mode for filming colorful movies in low light, and a built-in video light to brighten up the darkest shots. For more professional-looking footage, use the selectable level and grid markers on the LCD to frame your subject and keep your recordings even with the horizon.

Flexible digital photo options
This cam also records 2.76-megapixel digital stills to an optional mini Secure Digital® card. Continuous shooting mode lets you take five still images per second. You can even capture 2-megapixel photos while simultaneously recording high-definition video — snap a photo for your scrapbook while filming your little star on stage or your little athlete on the field.

General Features

HDV 1080i: The Canon HV20 camcorder captures true 1080i High Definition resolution video in 16:9 format, using MiniDV cassette tapes. The HV20's true 16:9 widescreen HD image is made for your new HD widescreen TV. At the same time, the HV20 gives you the flexibility to record in SD (standard definition) mode, too. That means you can enjoy the ultimate in HD video and photo quality, and still shoot SD video for viewing on your non-HD equipment

True HD CMOS Sensor (1920 x 1080) Image Sensor: The 1/2.7"-inch CMOS sensor (2,960,000 gross-pixels) reproduces high-resolution images at 1920 x 1080 resolution with full HD information in video images. The HV20's CMOS's high color resolution and advanced color reproduction gives brilliant results. It is also unique in featuring Canon's proprietary noise reduction technologies for crisp, sharp images. Low noise technology also means that even in dimly lit scenes, the signal from each pixel is as pure as possible, with minimal noise or other aberrations. As an added benefit, the CMOS sensor provides outstanding image capture in low light conditions. The camcorders effect gross pixel count is determined by what mode the HV20 is used in.

  • 16:9 Movies: approximately 2,070,000
  • 4:3 Movies: approximately 1,550,000
  • 16:9 Still Images: approximately 2,070,000
  • 4:3 Still Images: approximately 2,760,000

RGB Primary Color Filter With Bayer Pattern: The HV20 uses an RGB Primary Color Filter with Bayer Pattern that separates light into red, green and blue color components. This results in vibrant images with deep, rich, accurate color and natural-looking tones. In addition, the Bayer pattern delivers sharp, high definition image without creating false colors.

Digic DV II: Designed specifically for HD, DIGIC DV II ensures optimal image quality. It also ensures optimal image quality for still images, even though video and still images have different color requirements. The DIGIC DV ll image processing produces video with improved color reproduction; especially in skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a hybrid noise reduction system that employs two types of noise reduction for high definition images that are crystal clear. Plus, DIGIC DV ll features improved continuous shooting of digital photographs with the HV20. You can shoot five (3.1 Megapixel) still images per second, and enjoy faster processing of your images to your memory card (1.4x normal card; 2.5x Hi Speed card). It also helps lower power consumption for longer battery life.

High Definition Video Lens: The HV20 comes with a High Definition video lens with a 10x Optical zoom and 2000x total digital zoom. The digital zoom can bet set to either 40x or 200x. The HV20 allows you to select one of 3 pre-set zoom speeds for smooth, steady, professional looking zooms or you can choose the variable speed option that depends on how you operate the zoom. Press gently for a low zoom or press harder for faster zooms. The HD lens's super spectra coating technology results in images with minimal flare and ghosting. Plus, the HD lens' aspheric design reduces aberration and increases resolution, ensuring crisp, sharp video and enhancing the HD image quality. It gradation ND system gives you better exposures in bright shooting situations. The camcorder's built-in electronic lens cover means you never have to go looking for your lens cover again. Turn your camcorder on and the lens cover automatically opens; turn it off, and the cover closes.

Super-Range Optical Image Stabilization: The HV20's stabilization design corrects camcorder shake instantly. Canon's Super-Range OIS corrects for a wide range of camcorder motion: the fast vibration you'd experience while recording from a moving car; the medium-speed motion of hand-held recording; and the slower motion of body sway.  In addition, optical stabilization keeps your shot steady without a loss in image quality. You can also use it for taking sharper, clearer digital photographs with your HV20.

2.7" Widescreen LCD Screen: The HV20 features a 2.7" TFT, color widescreen LCD screen (211,000 pixels) to make it easy to compose and review your shots. The bright screen lets you see exactly what your camcorder is recording, and what your widescreen TV will display later. You can rotate the LCD screen 90-degrees downward and 180-degrees toward the lens allowing the subject to monitor the LCD screen. The LCD screen also features a backlight that you can set to either normal or bright. The LCD Screen's frame contains zoom, playback and focus assist controls for added convenience.

Viewfinder: The camcorder also features a 0.27" TFT color viewfinder (123,000 pixels) to use to save battery life or when it is just to bright outside to use the LCD screen.

Instant AF (Auto Focus): The Instant AF feature uses an external sensor, in combination with the HV20's autofocus system, to help significantly decrease the time it takes to find focus, even in low light conditions. This system achieves focus instantaneously, reducing focus "hunting." The benefits of Instant AF are especially seen in high brightness, and night shooting situations. With Instant AF, it's possible to capture fast, accurate focusing, even when following a moving subject.

Manual Focus: The HV20 features a manual focus in situations where the Autofocus may not work well, such as recording reflective surfaces, subjects with low contrast or without vertical lines, fast moving subjects, through wet windows or night scenes.

Auto Slow Shutter: In this mode, the camcorder automatically uses slow shutter speeds to obtain brighter recordings in places with insufficient lighting.

White Balance: The camcorder's auto white balance system compensates for a wide range of lighting conditions. The white balance can also be set manually or by using one of the six preset modes: Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent or Fluorescent H.

Image Effects: The HV20 allows you to record with the following saturation and contrast color effects:

  • Vivid: emphasizes the contrast and color saturation to record in crisp colors

  • Neutral: tones down the contrast and color saturation to record in neutral hues

  • Low Sharpening: records subjects with softened outlines

  • Soft Skin Detail: softens the details in the skin tone area for a more complimentary appearance

  • Custom: allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, color depth, and sharpness of the image

Level Markers: The Level Marker feature allows you to easily keep your camera level for more professional looking video. Simply press the Level Shot Control button, and a horizontal marker appears in your viewfinder. Line up any horizontal lines in your shot, such as the horizon, to the marker and you can be sure your camcorder is level.

Exceptional Quality

Written By TMac, St. Paul, MN on Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Having owned the HV20 for (nearly) a year since its release, I would encourage anyone looking for an HD (1080i) vidcam to consider this one, especially in light of the recent announcement of the HDD-based HG20. There is great value to be gained in the HV20 should one be able to "tolerate" the cost and inconvenience of MicroDV.

This is a wonderful vidcam, and I've captured some incredible family memories with it. The lens, build and ease-of-use quality are typical Canon. Unless you're looking for high-quality glass and CCD, this purchase is a no-brainer.

Exceptional Picture Quality

Written By Daniel, Greater Chicago Area on Tuesday, June 05, 2007

The HV20 camera is exceptional in terms of picture quality, price, and features.
Picture quality is outstanding and hard to believe. Family and friends made comments like, “it’s clearer than real life”, “that’s incredible”, “I can’t believe it”, “that little camera did that?”. I videotaped my son’s play from the last row in the auditorium and the picture from my HV20 is MUCH more clear and crisp then the large “professional” production camera (sorry I didn’t catch the model number). Ease of use is good. I had to look up a couple things, but out of the box I was able to shoot video and download it on to my Mac for editing with iMovie. The viewfinder screen is bright and you can turn info on or off easily.
Price. It’s more camera for less. I was willing to spend $1200 to $1800 and I looked at Panasonic’s 3CCD HD, at JVC’s 3CCD HD, and Sony’s HD and none of them can match the overall picture quality of the Cannon HV20. Looking at the specs you would think that 3CCDs would be better, and maybe the raw image is, but I think that the compression kills the quality. I was told that “the professional quality comes from Cannon’s optics and the fact that the image is stored on tape. Features & fun. The HV20 has all of the inputs I wanted. I connected an external shotgun mic for incredible sound, even from the back of the auditorium. The HDMI output is great for quick playback. The different light settings are fun to play with also. There are tons of menu options. So far the battery life is very good, over an hour. Lastly, I like that it is s

The Best HD Consumer Camcorder

Written By Gerard, Monroe, Louisiana on Wednesday, May 02, 2007

I recently sold my Sony HC3 because of its poor low-light capabilities. The HV20 is clearly a superior camera in low-light. In normal light, the advantage over the HC3 is also better - less harsh, I think the HC3 used an edge enhancement to sharpen the image.
The HV20 also has 24P (24 frames/sec progressive)- similar to the frame rate of movies (excuse the simplified explanation). There is also a Cine mode that adjusts color/contrast to mimic film.
Reviews place the HV20 at the top of the list compared to the Sony HC7, the JVC GZ-HD7, and the Sony SD1.
Probably the only cons on the HV20 is the flimsy zoom toggle and the plastic-looking exterior.

Not bad for an enthusiast

Written By Michael, Los Altos, CA on Saturday, April 21, 2007

I just got this camcorder and I have a few early comments.

I bought this camcorder because it has external mic capability.

My #1 complaint is that the viewfinder is horrible. It's far too small, and it's not adjustable (doesn't extend or swivel). Even my cheap Canon ZR-80 has a much better veiwfinder. If you always use the LCD when recording, then this may not be a problem.

I bought a HDMI cable in order to connect it to my HDTV (cable not included). The video is stunning with direct playback. It blows any standard definition video away.

The biggest problem is not really a problem with this camcorder, but the HD production process is simply not ready yet. My PC does not quite meet the minimum spec for editing HD (requires 3 GHz processor). But even worse is that there is no media to burn HDTV onto. Blu-ray burners are just hitting the market and they are really expensive as are Blu-ray players. You can't even find a HD-DVD burner yet.
