Our take on the Canon PIXMA MP980

CANON AUTHORIZED DEALER

Canon's PIXMA MP980 delivers outstanding performance and versatility for all your printing needs. Plus, it features built-in Wi-Fi®, so multiple users on a wireless PC network can enjoy easy access from anywhere in your home or office. Or you can hook it up to your wired network via the Ethernet port. This multifunction workhorse also handles all your scanning and copying tasks with ease.

Fast, high-resolution printing and easy connections
The MP980 delivers sharp, professional-looking photos and crisp, laser-quality text. You'll get detailed borderless 4" x 6" photos in as little as 20 seconds, and up to 26 text documents per minute. An advanced six-ink system gives you vivid, true-to-life colors and includes a special gray ink cartridge for printing high-quality black and white photos. You can print images directly from most newer digital cameras, or just insert your cam's memory card into one of the built-in card slots.

Detailed previews and simplified operation
The built-in 3-1/2" high-resolution LCD screen lets you easily preview and enhance your pictures before printing them. You can make adjustments to the images yourself or simply let the MP980 enhance contrast and improve sharpness automatically. It can even correct for picture-spoiling red-eye.

Convenient, economical printing
For text documents, the MP980 offers two-sided printing, allowing you to save trees and money. And there are six individual ink tanks — instead of replacing your entire ink cartridge, just replace the color you're low on. Separate paper trays for regular paper and photo paper mean you don't have to swap out your paper supply when switching from text to photo printing.

Advanced scanning and copying capabilities
The MP980 automatically optimizes image quality based on the type of original you're duplicating, for great-looking copies every time. It can scan important documents, priceless family photos, or 35mm slides and negatives — you can even make prints directly from your photos and film without turning on your computer. And the MP980's high resolution and color depth ensure that all your scanned images and copies are clean and lifelike.

You can print directly from memory cards, PictBridge-equipped digital cameras, and IR- or Bluetooth-equipped camera phones. In addition, you can print wirelessly from anywhere in the house via WiFi (with a working Ethernet network with wireless 802.11b/g capability).

Printer Features

5-Color System: The MP980 utilizes a 5-color ink system to ensure vivid colors and bold, black text. The printer uses six individual cartridges: PGI-220BK (pigment black), CLI-221BK (dye-based black), CLI-221Y (yellow), CLI-221C (cyan), CLI-221M (magenta), and CLI-221GY (gray).

ChromaLife 100+: ChromaLife 100+ is an enhancement of the original ChromaLife 100 system to improve the beauty and permanence of printed images through the combination of Canon's new dye-based inks, Canon photo paper, and Canon's FINE printhead technology. The newer Canon inks and paper are designed to provide longer-lasting and more beautiful vivid photo prints. The supplied PGI-220 and CLI-221 ink tanks are ChromaLife 100+ compatible. Compatible photo papers include PT-101, PR-201, and the supplied PP-201.

Resolution: Canon's Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) printhead technology utilizes a 6,144 precision nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as 1 picoliter. (PgBK: 512 nozzles, Yellow/Dye Black: 512 nozzles each, Cyan, Magenta, Gray: 1536 nozzles each) The MP980 produces a print resolution of up to 9600 x 2400 dpi for color and 600 x 600 dpi for black, for remarkable detail and clarity.

Auto Photo Fix: This supplied Canon software will analyze your photo and apply optimal image correction, plus automatic red-eye removal.

Canon PIXMA MP980

Written By MGB Guy, Litchfield, NH on Monday, July 20, 2009

I've always bought HP printers and that was my intention when I decided to look at multi-function units. I looked at the HP's first but then looked them up in electronic magazines and overall they rated the Canon PIXMA ahead of the HP's. Also, looked at reviews on line and got the same feedback. I was also looking for a scanner that was capable of scanning slides and didn't find that many that had that option. I have ~3,000 slides in Kodak Carousel Trays. I wanted to convert a lot of these to digital pictures. I've only tried one thus far, it was a picture of my wife that was taken ~ 40 years ago and the results looked like it was taken yesterday. One of the first things I did was try the copy function. The results were excellent, it was hard to tell the original vs. the copy. The PIXMA was very easy to set up and easy to use. The selection button on top lets you select various options, i.e. copy, scan, memory card, etc. Its very user friendly and you can go through these functions w/o even ready the manual. I would have rated it 5 stars but I've read several places that it uses ink up pretty fast and it has 6 individual in cartridges and they're not very large. That was one of the things I liked with HP was that they had large cartridges and you could do a lot of printing before they ran out. Time will tell! Crutchfield had the best price on line taken into account the rebate offer, free shipping and a fast delivery.

Pixma MP980

Written By Jerald, Minneapolis, MN on Wednesday, February 04, 2009

I used to be a die hard HP printer fan, but the drive unit for picking up photo paper was less than to be desired. So, with reservation I was convinced by a Canon Rep. to try the CANON PIXMA MP980, this is the best printer I have ever had. The quality is outstanding and easy of use is fantastic, and by the way, NO MORE feeding problems.
I am vary happy with the PM980 and recommend it to anyone in need of a great printer to contact Crutchfield, their service and delivery of my item went without a hitch.

Canon PIXMA MP980

Written By Keith, Suffern, NY on Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Printer is what I expected based on reviews and specifications that I researched prior to purchasing. The printer produces high quality photo prints (4X6 and 5X7 so far). I do not use the printer for B&W general printing as I have a laserjet printer for that. The printer was very easy to setup and attach to my home network. I am using it wired (Ethernet) connection, not the wireless connection. The printer is accessible by any of the 5 PC's that I have on my network. Wirelessly through an Access Point.

I am very pleased with the printer, it was a gift for my wife who uses it to print digital images she takes with her Canon G9 camera.

I went through the Yellow, Cyan, and Gray cartridges (ones that came with the printer) after printing 120 4X6 prints. I need to do the math to see what this would cost/print, difficult because the remainder of the cartridges still have ink.

All in all a great printer.
