Product Research

Features

Overview: The Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II is an excellent way to illuminate your subject when taking close-up macro images. This ring-style light mounts to your lens and gently lights the area just in front of the lens without washing it out. The MR-14EXII consists of the flash unit and a control unit which mounts to the camera's hot shoe. The two units are connected by a coiled cord. The MR-14EX II has dual tube lamps which can fire together or independently. It comes with a 67mm lens cap and a storage case.

Compatibility: The Macro Ring Lite is compatible with Canon EOS digital and film cameras compatible with E-TTL II, E-TTL, and TTL autoflash systems. It is recommended for use with Canon macro lenses. One of Canon's Macrolite Adapters (sold separately) must be used with the EF100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM (Macrolite Adapter 67) and EF180mm f3.5L Macro USM (Macrolite Adapter 72C) lenses. Screw-on filters can be used in most cases, attached either to the lens or the front of the flash unit.

Control Unit: The Macro Ring Lite's control unit fits atop your camera, mounting to the hot shoe. It has a 1-7/8" x 1-1/4" illuminated dot-matrix LCD Panel that indicates the flash's status and settings. Below the LCD panel are four Function buttons. The functions are displayed above buttons 1 through 4, and change according to the settings.

Quick Flash: The Quick Flash function lets you fire the flash before the flash is fully charged. The flash output is approximately 1/2 to 1/5 of the full output, but has a shorter firing interval. The "Flash Ready" LED glows green when Quick Flash is ready, and changes to red when the flash is fully charged. Quick Flash can only be used for single shooting.

Flash Ratio: The Macro Ring Lite's independent flash tubes (marked A and B) can be fired simultaneously or independently. You can also fire them at different intensities to create shadows or other special effects. The Flash Ratio can be set in half-stop increments from 8:1 to 1:1 to 1:8.

Focusing Lamps: The MR-14EX II is equipped with two white LED focusing lamps located at the top and bottom of the ring frame. When the Lamp button on the control panel is pressed, the two LEDs are lit for 20 seconds, making it easier to focus on your subject. You can turn the lamps off manually, or the lamps turn off automatically when you fully press the shutter button on the camera.

Modeling Flash: When you press the camera's depth-of-field preview button, the flash fires continuously for one second. This "modeling flash" enables you to check shadow effects on the subject and the lighting balance.

Wireless Multiple Flash: You can perform wireless multiple flash shooting with optical transmission, when using a Canon EX-series Speedlite that has the wireless slave function. This allows you to set up multiple flash units and flash groups to achieve a special effect or eliminate unwanted shadows. Each flash tube can be configured to control a separate firing group, if desired. Compatible Speedlite units with optical transmission wireless slave function include: 600EX-RT, 600EX, 580EX II, 580EX, 550EX, 430EX II, 430EX, 420EX, 320EX, and 270EX II.

Flash Exposure Compensation: Just like the camera's Exposure Compensation, you can set exposure compensation for flash. The flash Exposure Compensation for this unit can be set between -3 and +3 stops in 1/3-stop increments. The amount is displayed on the control unit's LCD panel.

Memory Functions: The settings of the MR-14EX II can be saved to be recalled later.

Power Requirements: The MR-14EX II is powered by four "AA" batteries (not included). The batteries are loaded into the control unit, which is mounted to the camera's hot shoe. New "AA" alkaline batteries provide enough power for approximately 100 to 700 flashes. You can also use "AA"-sized Ni-MH or lithium batteries. An optional CP-E4 Compact Battery Pack can be used as an external power source.

Auto Power Off: To save battery power, the power will turn off automatically after approximately 90 seconds without use. The flash can be turned on again by pressing the test flash button on the unit, or pressing the camera's shutter button halfway. If desired, the Auto Power off function can be disabled.
