Our take on the Canon PIXMA MX850

Let Canon's PIXMA MX850 premium "all in one" handle all your printing, scanning, copying, and faxing jobs with ease. This multi-function powerhouse offers high-speed operation to make quick work of home office tasks, plus it delivers photo-lab quality prints of your favorite digital images. A built-in Ethernet connection even lets you share this capable printer with multiple users on your computer network for greater productivity.

Great looking photos and easy connections
Use the MX850 to print vivid 4" x 6" borderless photos in as little as 21 seconds. Or delight your friends and family with large, beautifully detailed 8-1/2" x 11" prints created just for them. Transferring pictures to the MX850 for printing is easy, too. It connects directly to most newer digital cameras, and its built-in card reader accepts most types of memory cards. A bright 2-1/2" LCD screen helps you select the photos you want to print.

Efficient multi-document operation, two-sided printing
The MX850's high-capacity automatic document feeder lets you tackle big jobs in a hurry. It holds up to 35 pages of originals, and you can scan, copy, or fax both sides of two-sided documents without flipping them over by hand. Two-sided copying means you can transfer two document pages onto a single sheet of paper — saving trees and money. The MX850 even boasts dual paper trays to give you plenty of storage space.

Resolution: Canon's Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a 4,608 precision nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as 1 picoliter. The print head hold 5 individual ink tanks, and comes with black pigment, black dye, cyan, magenta, and yellow ink cartridges. The MX850 produces an amazing resolution of up to 9600 x 2400 dpi for color and 600 x 600 dpi for black, for remarkable detail and clarity.

  • Color Text: up to 24 pages-per-minute (approximately 2.5 seconds per page)
  • 4" x 6" Borderless Photo: approximately 21 seconds

PictBridge: You can connect this printer directly to any PictBridge compliant digital camera. PictBridge is a standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge-compliant digital camera directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

After categorizing your photo into one of five types (Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery, Snapshot with Scenery, or Snapshot with Night Scenery), the unit applies optimal image correction accordingly. It will brighten faces that are backlit and underexposed, and correct color cast to help ensure more accurate skin tones.

Ink Level: If one or more of the ink tanks need to be replaced, a graphic indicator will appear on the display. You can also check the levels by looking at the lamps for the individual ink tanks. If a tank is low, the lamp will flash slowly (approximately every 3 seconds). If the tank is empty, the lamp will flash quickly.

This information is printed on the top line of every page you fax out.

Speed Dialing: Speed dialing allows you to dial fax/telephone numbers by simply pressing a few buttons. You can store up to 60 digits for each phone number and up to 16 characters for each name associated with the phone numbers. You can speed dial by the following methods:

Scan Contrast/Fax Resolution: You can set the scan contrast from light to medium to dark to increase or decrease the difference between the bright and dark areas of the document. The fax resolution can be set to one of three selections (standard, fine, or photo), depending upon the type of document you are sending.

You can dial the recipients' numbers using any or all of the dialing methods: One-touch speed dial (up to 8), Coded Speed dial (up to 100), or regular dial (one destination). You can enter the destinations in any order.

Redialing: There are two methods of redialing: automatic or manual. When set to automatic redialing, you can customize the settings: whether or not to redial automatically, the number of times the machine redials (1-10 times), and the time interval between redials (1-99 minutes). To manually redial the last number called, you can simply press the Redial button.

Faxing From Computer (Windows Only): If the unit is connected to a computer, you can send faxes using the fax driver from any application software that has a printing function.

Overview: The MX850 is also a copy machine, allowing you to make color or black and white copies. You can make up to 99 copies of an original.

Copy Settings: You can change the copy settings such as the reduction/enlargement, intensity, page size, and image quality.

  • 4-on-1 Copy: This feature enables you to copy four documents onto one side of a sheet of paper by reducing the size of all 4 documents. You have 4 arrangement patterns to choose from.
  • Borderless Copy: Allows you to copy color images so that they fill the entire page without borders.
  • Image Repeat: Enables you to copy an image multiple times onto a single page. you can set the machine to automatically select the number of times it repeats the image, or you can specify the number. You can also specify vertical or horizontal copying
  • Collated Copy: You can make multiple copies of a multi-page document
  • Frame Erase: When copying thick originals, such as books, you can make a copy without the black margins around the image. This also helps reduce unnecessary ink consumption.
  • Sticker Copy: You can make 16 stickers from 4" x 6" photos or graphics using Canon sticker paper.
  • Fade-Restored Copy: You can obtain color-corrected printouts when copying documents that have faded over time.

Copying Speed: The printer has the following copy speeds

MX850

Written By Stephen, Boston on Saturday, September 27, 2008

Instructions are not great. Almost better off just connecting it the way you want (USB or Network) on the first PC, then run the CD and select method. If you install network on first PC, need to plug in the USB during, the install, then unplug. Once done, good bang for the buck. Good speed both photo and text. Network scanning is good.

Truly a Multifunction Printer

Written By Lanny, Phoenix on Thursday, April 03, 2008

In my humble opinion, the best bang for the buck! This Canon printer performs as described. It has many features and functions that easily surpass the needs of the everyday user. The printer duplexing feature is great and works like a charm. The printed text looks like it came from a laser printer, and the copy function makes a duplicate look like an original. The color printing is outstanding for an ink jet printer. Installation and setup was quick and easy. The software is simple to use and has many notable performance and maintenance features, and the help screen documentation is excellent. The key pad and LCD screen are laid out nicely, and the function of each key is clear and easy to follow. The scanner works great and, unfortunately, I have not yet used the fax, but I am sure it works well too. Although they can be a bit costly, the multiple ink wells are a nice touch - especially the two black ink wells. Having two paper feed locations is a nice design consideration too. This is my second purchase from Crutchfield and I am highly impressed - good price on the printer, easy to order, in stock and shipped immediately! Customer service is superior too!
