Overview
Product Overview: The Canon MX850 is an all-in-one machine for
your home office that allows you to
quickly print beautiful photos and laser-quality text, copy important documents,
scan photos, forms, or even thick notebooks. You can also send and receive faxes
in color or black-and-white, and print directly from memory cards, and
PictBridge-equipped digital cameras and camera phones.
Automatic Document Feeder: The MX850 has an automatic document feeder that holds
up to 35 original 8-1/2" x 11" documents (or 30 legal-sized documents), making
it easier to copy, scan, or fax large or multiple documents.
Dual Paper Sources: This unit has two paper sources: a rear tray and a
cassette. The paper capacities of each source include:

Built-in Duplex Printing: You can print two-sided documents
or photos without having to manually flip the pages by using either the auto
sheet feeder or the paper cassette.
Operation Panel: The MX850 has
a convenient operation panel on the top front of the printer. You can check the
status of the unit on a unit's 2.5" LCD display. In addition to the copy, fax, scan,
memory card,
and print buttons, the panel includes a 12-button telephone keypad.
Ethernet Port: This unit includes an RJ-45 jack which allows you to
connect to or establish a home or office network.
USB Interface: The USB 2.0
High Speed (female Type A connector) interface enables the fastest possible image transfers and scanning speeds.
Printer Features
Resolution: Canon's Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering
(FINE) uses a 4,608 precision nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent
droplets as small as 1 picoliter. The print head hold 5 individual ink tanks,
and comes with black pigment, black dye, cyan, magenta, and yellow ink
cartridges. The MX850 produces an amazing resolution of up to
9600 x
2400 dpi for color and 600 x 600 dpi for black, for remarkable detail and
clarity.
Print Speeds: The printer has
the following print speeds:
- Black Text:
up to 31 pages-per-minute (approximately 1.9 seconds per page)
- Color
Text: up to 24 pages-per-minute (approximately 2.5 seconds per page)
- 4" x 6" Borderless Photo: approximately 21 seconds
PictBridge: You can connect
this printer directly to any PictBridge compliant digital camera. PictBridge is
a standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge-compliant digital camera
directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.
Printing From Memory Cards: Two
Memory Card slots, located on the front panel, allow you to print photos
directly from the following memory cards:

Printing From Bluetooth-enabled Phone: You can print
wirelessly from a Bluetooth 2.0-enabled camera phone up to a distance of
approximately 33 feet (10 meters). The optional Canon BU-30 Bluetooth adapter
unit is required.
Printable Image Data: The MX850 supports JPEG and TIFF
images created by DCF ver.1.0/2.0 standard compliant digital cameras. Other
image or movie types such as RAW images cannot be printed.
Auto Image Fix: The built-in Auto Image Fix feature helps
you produce amazing results on all your photos. After categorizing your photo
into one of five types (Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery, Snapshot with Scenery,
or Snapshot with Night Scenery), the unit applies optimal image correction
accordingly. It will brighten faces that are backlit and underexposed, and
correct color cast to help ensure more accurate skin tones.
Ink Level: If one or more of the
ink tanks need to be replaced, a graphic indicator will appear on the display.
You can also check the levels by looking at the lamps for the individual ink
tanks. If a tank is low, the lamp will flash slowly (approximately every 3
seconds). If the tank is empty, the lamp will flash quickly.
Fax Features
Phone Line Connections:
The MX850 can be connected for faxing in several
ways:
- Telephone line only (analog)
- With external telephone and/or answering machine
- With external telephone and/or answering machine via computer
- xDSL line
- ISDN line
Transmit Terminal ID (TTI): You can register your TTI in this unit so
the recipient of your fax will know who sent it and when it was sent. The TTI
includes the date/time, your fax/telephone number, your name, name of
destination when sending from coded speed dialing, and the page number. This
information is printed on the top line of every page you fax out.
Speed Dialing: Speed dialing allows you to dial
fax/telephone numbers by simply pressing a few buttons. You can store up to 60
digits for each phone number and up to 16 characters for each name associated
with the phone numbers. You can speed dial by the following methods:
- One-Touch Speed Dialing: You can assign telephone
numbers to one of the 8 One-Touch Speed Dial keys (01 to 08) on the front
control panel.
- Coded Speed Dialing: Coded speed dialing allows you to dial
fax/telephone numbers by simply pressing a few buttons. You can store up to 100
fax/phone numbers, and can dial them by entering the two-digit code (00-99)
assigned to that number.
- Group Dialing: You can group together numbers
that have already been registered as a One-Touch or Coded Speed Dialing
number, so that you can dial every member of the group at one time. The
groups can be registered to either an unoccupied One-Touch Speed Dial Key or
an unoccupied Coded Speed Dialing code.
Scan Contrast/Fax Resolution: You can set the scan contrast from light
to medium to dark to increase or decrease the difference between the bright and
dark areas of the document. The fax resolution can be set to one of three
selections (standard, fine, or photo), depending upon the type of document you
are sending.
Sequential Broadcasting: You can send the same document to a
maximum of 109 recipients in one operation. You can dial the recipients' numbers
using any or all of the dialing methods: One-touch speed dial (up to 8), Coded
Speed dial (up to 100), or regular dial (one destination). You can enter the
destinations in any order.
Redialing: There are two methods of redialing: automatic or manual.
When set to automatic redialing, you can customize the settings: whether or not
to redial automatically, the number of times the machine redials (1-10 times),
and the time interval between redials (1-99 minutes). To manually redial the
last number called, you can simply press the Redial button.
Faxing From Computer (Windows Only): If the unit is connected to a
computer, you can send faxes using the fax driver from any application software
that has a printing function.
Receiving Faxes: You can choose from the following Receive Modes:
- Fax Only Mode: if you have a dedicated telephone line for fax use
only.
- Tel Priority Mode: if you receive mainly voice calls and
sometimes faxes.
- Fax Priority Mode: if you receive mainly faxes and sometimes
voice calls.
- DRPD: if you subscribe to a Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection
service with your telephone company
- Network Switch: if you want the machine to automatically switch
between fax and voice calls by the call ring patterns
Memory Receiving: If the unit receives a fax and is unable to print
the received fax due to a problem (low ink, no paper, etc.), the fax will be
stored in memory. When the problem is resolved, the fax stored in memory is
printed automatically. Up to 250 pages of faxes can be stored in memory.
Reports and Lists: You can print the following reports and lists from
the unit: Activity Report, One-touch speed dial numbers, Coded speed dial numbers,
Group dial list, User's data list, Memory
list, TX (transmission) report, RX (reception) report, and Multi TX report
(after sequential broadcast).

Scanner Features
Overview: The MX850 allows you to produce impressive 4800 x
9600 dpi
scans with vibrant 48-bit color depth of photographs and documents to a
computer. The images can be saved as JPEG, TIFF, bitmap, or PDF files. Scanned
data on your computer can be processed using image processing software. You can
copy/scan thick originals without a problem. You can also use OCR (Optical
Character Recognition) software to convert scanned paper documents to text data.
The maximum size paper that can be scanned is 8.5" x 11.7" on the
flatbed and 8.5" x 14 (legal size) using the Automatic Document Feeder.

Copier Features
Overview: The MX850 is also a copy machine, allowing
you to make color or black and white copies. You can make up to 99 copies of an
original.
Copy Settings: You can change the copy settings such as the
reduction/enlargement, intensity, page size, and image quality.
Changing Size of
Copy: You can reduce or enlarge the copies using four different methods:
- Same Magnification: copies in the same size as the
original
- Preset
Copy
Ratios: you can select one of the preset ratios

Custom Copy Ratios (Zoom):
you can specify the copy ratio as a percentage to reduce or enlarge copies
(1% increments from 25 to 400%)
- Automatic Ratios
(Fit-to-Page):
the machine automatically reduces or enlarges the image to fit the
size of paper
Exposure (Intensity): This
feature is the degree of difference between light and dark. Increasing the
exposure setting further blackens dark area and brightens white areas.
Conversely, decreasing the exposure setting reduces the difference between
bright and dark areas. You can adjust the exposure between nine gradations, or
Auto Intensity. Note: Auto Intensity is not available when documents are
fed via the ADF.

Quality: You can
adjust the image quality according to the document to be copied. you can choose
from three options:

2-on-1 Copy: This feature enables you to copy two documents onto one
single sheet by reducing the size of both documents.

4-on-1 Copy: This feature enables you to copy four documents onto one
side of a sheet of paper by reducing the size of all 4 documents. You have 4
arrangement patterns to choose from.

Borderless Copy:
Allows you to copy color images so that they fill the entire page without
borders.
- Image Repeat: Enables
you to copy an image multiple times onto a single page. you can set the
machine to automatically select the number of times it repeats the image, or
you can specify the number. You can also specify vertical or horizontal
copying

Collated Copy: You can make multiple copies of a multi-page
document

Frame Erase: When copying thick originals, such as books, you can
make a copy without the black margins around the image. This also helps
reduce unnecessary ink consumption.

Sticker Copy:
You can make 16 stickers from 4" x 6" photos or graphics
using Canon sticker paper.

Fade-Restored Copy: You can obtain color-corrected printouts when
copying documents that have faded over time.

Easy-PhotoPrint EX
(Windows/Macintosh): You can quickly and easily print borderless photos just
by choosing the picture and paper type. This program also offers red eye
correction, will smooth facial skin tones and is compatible with ExifPrint (to
transfer recording data from the camera). Note: The Windows version is
included on the CD-ROM. A Macintosh version is downloadable from the Canon
website.
ScanSoft OmniPage SE
(Windows/Macintosh): ScanSoft
OmniPage SE allows you to convert the text images imported from a scanner or
digital camera into editable characters. Note: When using with Windows
2000 Professional, SP4 is required.
MP Navigator
EX (Windows/Macintosh): MP
Navigator enables you to easily scan in photographs, documents, image data, etc.
You can save scanned image data on your computer and attach it to an e-mail. You
can also print photographs and edit images using the accompanying applications.

Presto! PageManager (Windows):
Presto! PageManager makes it easy to
scan, share, and organize your photos and documents. It can help you convert
piles of papers to organized, digitized files, as well as view, edit, send,
