Canon

Our take on the Canon PowerShot S2 IS

Canon's PowerShot S2 IS captures detailed 5-megapixel images and features an exceptionally powerful 12X optical zoom lens. That long-range telephoto capability makes for flexible shooting — zero in on a brilliant kite high in the sky, or capture a close-up of your child's face as she performs at her first piano recital. The zoom's high-quality ultrasonic motor offers smooth, silent, speedy operation. And built-in image stabilization effectively eliminates camera shake, so you'll enjoy crisp, in-focus pics of distant subjects.

The swiveling, flip-out LCD is great for taking photos from difficult angles. Flip it down when you're holding the camera up over your head in a crowd, or turn it around for a quick self-portrait.

The versatile S2 gives you other helpful options, too. Rely on goof-proof, fully automatic shooting, or take creative control with advanced user-adjustable settings. Either way, Canon's proprietary image processing ensures vibrant, lifelike color. This camera also boasts a high-quality movie mode for capturing full-motion video clips with stereo sound.

Features

LCD Monitor:  The Canon PowerShot S2 IS has a 1.8" low temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT color LCD monitor featuring approximately 115,000 pixels. The monitor is on a hinged panel that swings out from the camera body. Once the monitor is opened fully, it can be swiveled 90° backward or 180° forward. When swiveled 180° forward, the panel can be closed against the camera body with the monitor facing outward. The monitor has a near 100% picture coverage.

LCD Viewfinder: In addition to the LCD monitor, the camera has a 0.33" color LCD viewfinder with approximately 100% coverage. You can change the focus of the viewfinder by turning the diopter dial.

Recording Media: The camera records still images or moving images with stereo audio on SD Memory Cards. Still images are recorded in JPEG, and the movies are recorded in AVI format (Image data: Motion JPEG, Audio data: WAVE (monaural)). A 16MB SD Memory Card is included with the camera.

DIGIC II Image Processor and iSAPS Technology: The PowerShot S2 IS features the DIGIC II Image Processor, designed to improve processing speed and image quality. The DIGIC II processor provides faster camera startup, autofocus, and playback, and assures that every image is more colorful and vibrant. The iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology uses an internal database of thousands of photographs to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.5" CCD image sensor with approximately 5.3-million total pixels and 5-million effective pixels.

Image Resolution/Compression: You can choose from the following still image resolutions: Large (2592 x 1944 pixels), Medium 1 (2048 x 1536 pixels), Medium 2 (1600 x 1200 pixels), and Small (640 x 480 pixels). For each resolution, you can set the compression to Superfine, Fine or Normal. Movies can be shot at 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 with a frame rate of 30 or 15 frames per second. Movies can be recorded up to the capacity of the inserted memory card (up to 1GB). The estimated number of still images and length of movies that can be recorded on SD Memory Cards is as follows:

Optics: The camera features a 12x optical zoom lens. The 4x digital zoom extends the telephoto capabilities to a total zoom of 48x.

Optical Image Stabilizing: The Image Stabilizer function allows you to minimize the camera shake which results in blurred images when you shoot distant subjects that have been magnified or when you shoot in dark conditions. You can select "Continuous" stabilization, "Shoot Only" stabilization (active when shutter button pressed all the way), "Panning" stabilization (active when the camera shakes vertically), or Off.

AutoFocus Modes: The camera utilizes TTL (through-the-lens) automatic focusing with two focusing modes:

  • Continuous: The camera is constantly focusing wherever it is aimed, even when the shutter button is not pressed.
  • Single: The camera only focuses when the shutter button is pressed halfway, conserving battery power.

AF-Assist Beam: The AF-assist beam will sometimes emit when the shutter button is pressed halfway to assist focusing in certain conditions, i.e. dark conditions. The AF-assist beam can be turned off. If animals are your subject, turn off the beam when shooting in the dark to avoid startling them.

Manual Focus: You can select a Manual Focus mode if you want more control, or cannot achieve a good focus automatically. When in the Manual Focus mode, a magnified image appears in a window on the monitor with a linear scale to indicate the approximate focus distance. The focus is adjusted electronically by using the Up and Down buttons until focus is achieved.

Shooting Modes: Using the Mode Dial on the top of the camera, you can select from numerous shooting modes:

  • Auto: camera selects the settings according to surroundings and conditions
  • Portrait: blurs the background and makes the subject stand out
  • Landscape: for shooting spacious landscape scenes
  • Night Scene: for capturing human subjects against the backdrop of an evening sky or night scene
  • Special Scene: for taking optimal pictures by selecting one of the appropriate shooting mode: Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Indoor, or Night Snapshot
  • My Colors: change the colors in an image by altering the balance between blue, green, and red, transforming pale or tanned skin, or changing a specific color before shooting
  • Stitch Assist: for taking shots you want to combine into a panorama
  • P, Tv, Av, M: These AE modes let you select specific settings manually and allow the camera to adjust other settings:
    • Program AE (P): The camera automatically sets both the aperture and the shutter speed
    • Shutter Speed Priority (Tv): You set the shutter speed, allowing the camera to set the shutter speed.
    • Aperture Priority (Av): You set the aperture, allowing the camera to set the shutter speed.
    • Manual (M): You manually set the aperture and the shutter speed.
  • Custom (C): You can save frequently used shooting modes and various shooting settings in the Custom mode.

Focusing Range: The camera features the following focus ranges:

  • Normal AF: 1.6' to infinity (wide angle), 3.0' to infinity (tele)

  • Macro Mode: 3.9" to 1.6' (wide angle)

  • Super Macro Mode: 0" to 3.9" (wide angle)

Auto Rotate Function: The PowerShot S2 IS's Auto Rotate function uses an Intelligent Orientation Sensor to sense whether your images were shot horizontally or vertically. During playback, the camera automatically rotates the image to the correct viewing orientation in the display.

Flash Modes: The PowerShot S2 IS has a built-in flash which can be manually opened or closed as needed. When the flash is open, you can choose whether the flash will fire with every shot or will fire automatically depending on the light level. When closed, the flash will not fire. In the menu, you can select the following flash functions:

  • Red-eye Reduction: When activated, the red-eye reduction lamp fires when the flash is used in dark areas. This reduces the light reflecting back from the eyes, making them appear red.

  • Slow-Synchro: The flash timing is adjusted to slow shutter speeds. This reduces the chance that only the background will appear dark when a person is photographed against a twilight background or night scene, or when an interior shot is taken.

  • Flash Timing: The timing at which the flash fires can be changed to provide different effects:

    • 1st Curtain: The flash fires right after the shutter opens.

    • 2nd Curtain: The flash fires right before the shutter closes.

    • Flash Adjustments: You can set flash adjustments to Automatic or Manual

      • Flash Exposure Compensation: When Flash Adjust is set to Automatic, settings can be adjusted in 1/3-step increments from -2EV to +2EV.

      • Flash Output: In Manual shooting mode, or when Flash Adjust is set to Manual, the flash output can be set to one of three levels.

Flash Exposure Lock (FE Lock): You can lock the flash exposure so the exposure settings are correctly adjusted for a particular portion of the subject.

Photo Effect Modes: You can choose from the following Photo Effect Modes:

  • Vivid: emphasizes the contrast and color saturation to record in bold colors

  • Neutral: tones down the contrast and color saturation to record neutral hues

  • Low Sharpening: records subjects with softened outlines

  • Sepia: records images in sepia tones

  • B/W: records images in black and white

  • Off: records with no effect

Continuous Shooting Mode: You can use this mode to shoot successive frames while the shutter button is fully pressed. In the Standard Continuous Mode, the camera stores approximately 1.5 images per second while the shutter button is held down. In the High-speed Continuous Mode, the camera stores approximately 2.4 shots per seconds. Images may be recorded in continuous mode until the SD Memory card is full. (Shooting speed based on Large image, fine compression setting with LCD Monitor off.)

Interval Shooting: You can shoot images at a set interval to create a series of time-lapsed images. The shooting interval time can be set from 1 to 60 minutes, and 2 to 100 images can be shot. For shooting over an extended period, it is recommended that the camera be connected to an optional AC power adapter (CA-PS700, sold separately).

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Light Metering: used for standard conditions. The area within the frame is divided into several zones and light is measured based on subject position, brightness, direct light and backlighting.

  • Center-Weighted Averaging: averages the exposure from the entire image, but places more weight on the subject at the center

  • Spot AE Point:

    • Center: meters the area within the spot AE point at the center of the LCD monitor

    • AF Point: meters the spot AF point corresponding to the AF frame

Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -2 to +2 in 1/3-step increments.

Locking the Exposure Setting (AE Lock): You can set the exposure and focus separately. This is effective when the contrast is too strong between the subject and background, or when a subject is backlit.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings:

  • Auto: the camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions

  • Daylight: for recording outdoors on a bright day

  • Cloudy: for recording under overcast, shady or twilight skies

  • Tungsten: for recording under tungsten and bulb-type 3-wavelength fluorescent lighting

  • Fluorescent: for recording under warm-white, cool-white or warm-white (3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting

  • Fluorescent H: for recording under daylight fluorescent, or daylight fluorescent-type (3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting

  • Flash: for recording with the flash

  • Custom: allows you to manually set the white balance and store the settings

ISO Speed: The ISO speed can be set to 50, 100, 200, 400, or Auto.

Long Shutter Mode: You can set the shutter speed to a slower setting to make dark subjects appear brighter. You can choose from the following long shutter speeds (in seconds): 1, 1.3, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, and 15. Note: The camera applies special noise-reduction processing to images shot at shutter speeds slower than 1.3 seconds, thereby producing high-quality images.

Self-Timer: The self-timer starts when the shutter button is pressed. The delay time can be set to 10 seconds, 2 seconds, or Custom Timer. The Custom Timer allows you to choose the timer delay setting: 1-10, 15, 20, or 30 seconds for up to 10 shots.

Editing Movies: The Edit function in the movie control panel enables you to cut unwanted portions at the start or the end of a movie clip.

Sound Memos: You can attach sound memos (up to 60 seconds) to an image while in the replay mode.

Sound Only Recording: You can record sound only, without images, for up to two hours or the available time on the memory card (if less).

Slide Show: Images stored on an SD Memory card can automatically be displayed one-by-one using the Slide Show function. You can display all the stored images or you can customize up to 3 separate slide shows. Up to 998 images can be marked per custom slide show. You can also set the amount of time each image is displayed in a slide show. You can choose 3-10 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, or Manual. In addition, the repeat function allows you to repeat a slide show after it has finished.

Index Replay: This feature allows you to view nine images at once on the LCD monitor so that you can search for an image quickly.

Image Magnification: When viewing a still picture in Single Image Replay mode, you can magnify the image 2.5x, 5x, or 10x.

Rotating Images: You can rotate an image by 90 or 270 degrees clockwise in the LCD monitor.

Protecting Images: The protect feature allows you to protect important images from accidental erasure.

Power Requirements: The Canon PowerShot S2 IS is powered by 4 "AA" alkaline batteries (supplied). You can also use optional Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries. For long periods of continuous use, or when connected to a computer, it is recommended that the camera be connected to the optional CA-PS700 Compact Power Adapter (available from the manufacturer). The typical performance of the batteries are as follows:

Approximate Number of Images Playback Time
LCD Monitor On Viewfinder On
AA Alkaline Batteries 130 images 130 images 800 min.
AA Ni-MH Batteries
(Canon NB4-200, 2300mAh)
550 images 570 images 900 min.

Power Saving Functions: The camera is equipped with the following power saving functions:

  • Auto Power Down Function: When activated the Auto Power Down function operates in the following situations:

    • Shooting Mode: power automatically shuts off approximately 3 minutes after the last function is accessed

    • Playback: power automatically shuts off approximately 3 minutes after the last function is accessed

    • Printing: While connected to a printer, the power will automatically shut off approximately 5 minutes after the last function is accessed or printer ceases to print.

    • Note: The Auto Power Down Function will not activate during a Slide Show or while the connected to a computer.

  • Display Off: While in Shooting Mode, the LCD monitor or viewfinder shuts off after a specified period of time and no camera control is accessed. The following time settings can be selected: 10 sec, 20 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min.

PictBridge/Direct Print: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer of any brand, or a Canon printer that supports the Direct Print function. You can also connect the camera directly to certain Canon Bubble Jet printers. In this way, you can make prints directly from the camera without having to hook it up to a computer.

Exif Print (Exif 2.2): The Canon PowerShot S2 IS conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

DPOF Print Settings: On your SD Memory card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once on optional photo printers or at participating photo labs.

DPOF Transfer Order: You can use the camera to specify settings for images that you wish to download to a computer. The settings used on the camera comply with the Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) standards. A maximum of 998 images can be selected per SD card, and are transferred in order from oldest to newest by shooting date.

My Camera Function: The start-up image, start-up sound, operation sounds, self-timer sound and shutter sound can be customized with the My Camera function and edited on your computer using the software provided with the camera.

Optional Conversion Lenses: Optional conversion lenses can be mounted to the PowerShot S2 IS when the optional LA-DC58E Conversion Lens Adapter is used. The WC-DC58A Wide Converter can give you a wide angle focal length down to 27mm, while the TC-DC58B Tele Converter can increase the focal length to 648mm.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Digital Terminal: The PowerShot S2 IS has a Mini-B Version 2.0 USB terminal to allow you to connect the camera to a compatible computer or compatible Canon printer via the supplied USB cable. This USB 2.0 Hi-Speed-compatible terminal allows you to rapidly download images to your computer or printer.

A/V Output: The camera's 3.5mm (1/8") minijack output allows you to connect the camera to a TV or video monitor with stereo RCA audio and composite video input jacks using the supplied audio/video cable. You can set the video output to NTSC or PAL.

It takes GREAT pictures, has all the features you want and many more. The only minor thing I find at fault (and it's a minor one) is that the lens cap doesn't always stay on when it should. Would that stop me from buying this camera?....No, it wouldn't! It's a GREAT camera. I highly recommend it.

I got the S2 IS just 5 days ago and love it!

The camera is much faster than my dads A95, and it takes great movies. Even on the lower quality setting at 30frames per second, the movies are very nice.

I highly recommend this camera.

Kudos for the camera and Crutchfield. I ordered the Camera 3 days before leaving on a vacation to Costa Rica. The camera arrived on standard shipping terms in plenty of time. The quality of all shots is excellent. Particularly impressed by the 12X zoom and image stabilization. Was able to zoom in on wildlife. Also liked the movie mode with stereo and ability to move in and out while filming. Batteries lasted through the 1 G SD memory card. You need the E2 batteries for spares.

This camera is super. I have had like twenty different cameras. I still have my first SLR a Canon AE-1 in working conditions. I have also three digitals, a Sony DSC-S85, 4.1 megapixels bought 5 yrs ago, a Fuji 3.2 meg bought in an "emergency" in Las Vegas, and a Panasonic SV AV50 (2.1 meg photos, ASF video and MP3 player). But this machine is incredible I took a photo of my wife shoulders up I can zoom-in in my computer and count her facial pores. I took a movie with only the light of reading light in my bedroom and the colors and sharpness was comparable to a regular DV camcorder. Cruthfield service has been a plus since the order to the follow ups to see how it works. Thanks. I will make more business with you guys.

Owned 3 digicams before, in this order: kodak dx4530, nikon 4300, nikon 4600, Canon A95. None of them match up overall to this fine S2is. Very easy to operate and was amazed by the ease of using manual shutter priority (TV mode), 1/500th of a second gives me totally blur free images. All I do is move mode dial to Tv and i'm preset to shoot at 1/500th. A95 was not as easy to use. S2 is very fast, very professional feel, and takes super photos under many conditions. Automatic mode is also terrific. I like the flick up flash because I can use flash without looking up buttons and menus. I find myself using the viewfinder exclusively instead of the lcd. Zoom is great. Camera comfortable and stable to hold. this cam is an amazing value. For less than $400. I have such a quality instrument I will not need a $2000. model. Bravo to Canon for a really great product and lenses. Nice neck strap and Crutchfield (who I love)gave me a free nice quality camera bag. Thank you Crutchfield! I highly recommend Crutchfield and the S2 camera. You will love this user friendly camera!

What can i tell ya... right out of the box, this thing performed like a charm! The 1gig card is a must for those avid photographers such as myself. Ive been taking alot of pics of Hurricane Katrina damage (seeing how she came thru my back door!) and it has proven itself on the field time and again. Even the videos i have taken and those New Years fireworks also came out superb. If you are looking for a camera that performs like it should, BUY THIS!!! It wont let you down as far as im concerned! Even the people at Canon are wonderful to work with for finding accessories and product registration.

CONS: one thing i didnt like was the lens cap. i have seen copmlaints about this online and i see why. i like the felt on the end, but it just doent stay on very well. so i had to stick a piece of 3m scotch tape on the inside of the cap and cut the remainder. Worked great as a quick fix! But im easy to please!!!

#2: If you have BIG fingers, BEWARE!! the buttons on this thing are a little clumbsy and small. When i first got it, i didnt know how to hold it right. YEAH it looks obvious but believe me, there is a right and wrong way to hold this camera!

#3: The FLIP screen on the back seems a little weak for me. im aggressive with my stuff and i feel that repeated opening, flipping, and closing of the screen itself could cause some degrade of the joint that holds it to the camera. So i prefer the view finder mostly.(unless its video) Dont know if anyone else sees this problem...

OTHER THAN THAT, BUY THIS CAMERA.

A must buy!

Written By Mike G, Myrtle Beach, SC on Monday, December 05, 2005

I have had this camera for about 4 months now. The zoom is fantastic. There are so many options and settings on this camera you be more than pleased. I bought a 512mb card and I don't have to worry about downloading pics to my PC after every use. The image stabilization is fantastic! I have taken pics from 1,000 ft in a cesna of Myrtle Beach and the quality was amazing. This is the best digital camera I have ever owned. The smaller LCD screen saves on battery life. I bought the Energizer Rechargeable 2500 mAh batteries and charger and am more than happy with the package. If you are looking, look no further. I definately recomend this product, memory card, and batteries. Buy it!

Great pictures, optical zoom is outstanding, image stabilization really does a good job of controlling my shakes. The adjustable LCD screen is really handy in shooting shots looking down or up. LCD screen does wash out in bright lighting. The camera really should come with a 128mb card standard.

I bought this camera and Sony DSC-H1. They both have similar parameters, price and ratings. For two weeks I was comparing them in every possible condition. Both cameras are superb, but sony is a little bit better so that's the one I kept

Picture Purrrfect...usually

Written By Randall, Missouri on Saturday, January 14, 2006

My 1st digit camera and boy is it fun. Took 434 pics the first week I had it. That's also when I had to re-charge the Canon rechargeable batteries which I recommend instead of regular AA's. Software is easily installed and works well (XP Pro). Lots of features and buttons but after playing a week with it, it isn't as intimidating. Takes great pictures but does have a little hard time focusing from time to time. Zooooom is nice but again, the more you go out the focus sometimes takes a couple trys to get it right. LCD is smaller than most but is OK working with not to mention the flip-out and around for those self portraits. The size is bigger and heftier than most but to me this was a plus as I hate teeny tiny gadgets, I wanna know I've got something in my hand. The front lens cap is the worst part of the S2 IS. It keeps popping off. I understand the concept as if accidentally turned on the lens tube comes forward and will pop the cap off nicely so as not to hurt the lens or jam the gearing. I've order the adapter tube which will protect the lens tube assembly and comes with the more standard plastic cap that you squeeze off with two fingers and shouldn't pop off repeatedly. I don't recommend the Canon case as it is very small and only holds the camera itself, I'd recommend getting the Canon gear bag so you can hold all your extras; SD cards, cables, cleaning cloths, etc. The 1GB SanDisk SD card is working well and I have a 2GB Transcend 150X on the way. All-in-all so far it's been FUN, FUN, FUN!!!
