Our take on the Canon EOS Rebel T3 Kit

Canon

Develop your photography hobby

You don't have to be an expert photographer to use an SLR — they all offer easy automatic shooting. Because of their build quality and the physics of good glass and large sensors, even their built-in automatic settings will get you better pictures than most point-and-shoots or mobile devices. But experienced photographers and budding hobbyists can get more creative by manually adjusting settings like aperture and shutter speed. SLRs let you expand your shooting options with additional lenses and flashes to suit just about any situation. If you'd like to record the occasional video, look for a model with high-def movie mode.

Photos at the speed of life
Point-and-shoot cameras let you take fantastic photos, as long as your subjects stay put. But capturing crisply focused shots of a fast-moving toddler, high-energy puppy, or family athlete in mid-stride often demands something faster than a pocket cam. For that, you need an SLR like Canon's EOS Rebel T3. This nimble SLR camera gives you the speed and responsiveness to catch all the action of life's dramas in crisp, detail-rich pictures and brilliant HD videos.

From full-auto to hands-on shooting, this cam does it all
The T3's fully automatic operation lets you start snapping beautiful photos and movies right away — even if you've never used an SLR. Or you can use the new Basic+ setting to adjust images yourself. This mode provides easy-to-use controls that let you fine-tune the look of your pictures without needing to know anything technical about how it all works. Newbies will appreciate Canon's Feature Guide that displays short, on-screen explanations of what each function does to help them get the hang of things. Plus, this camera gives you the full manual control and focusing capabilities that SLRs are famous for, when you're ready to branch out and explore your creative side.

A bright, clear display and image stabilizing lens
The crisp 2-11/16" LCD monitor gives you a clear view of the pictures and videos you've taken. Or you can use it in the "live view" mode to line up your shots just like you would with a point-and-shoot camera. On-demand grid lines on the LCD make it easy to take level portraits and landscapes. The press of a button lets you quickly toggle between live view shooting with the LCD or using the cam's traditional optical viewfinder. The supplied Canon image stabilizing zoom lens helps keep your pictures and movies looking sharp, even in low-light shooting environments where camera shake can cause images to blur.

Features

Overview: This Canon EOS Rebel T3 kit includes the EOS Rebel T3 camera body and the EF-S 18-55 IS zoom lens. It has a standard Canon EF mount, and is compatible with Canon EF lenses, including EF-S lenses.

Viewfinder: The Rebel T3 uses an eye-level SLR viewfinder with a fixed pentamirror with 0.8x magnification (w/50mm lens) for approximately 95% vertical and horizontal coverage. It has a -2.5 to +0.5 diopter adjustment so you can focus the viewfinder to suit your eyesight (with or without eyeglasses). When using the self-timer or remote control, when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To prevent this, you can use the supplied eyepiece cover, attached to the neck strap, to cover the eyepiece.

2.7" Clear View LCD Monitor: The T3 features a 2.7" TFT color LCD monitor. It has a 4:3 aspect ratio and approximately 230,000 dots for Live View composition and viewing recorded images. The LCD monitor offers approximately 99% viewing coverage and 7 brightness levels to choose from.

Live View: The Live View Function enables viewing your subjects directly on the camera's 2.7" LCD monitor. The camera allows you to magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focusing. You can access a number of Auto Focusing modes including Quick Mode, Live Mode, and Face Detection Live Mode. Exposure simulation displays and simulates how the brightness of the actual image will look. You can choose one of two grid overlay options for the LCD screen to help you line up vertical and horizontal lines. The camera can be controlled remotely via a computer through a USB connection, or wirelessly with the optional RS-60E3 remote switch (280RS60E3, sold separately).

12.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: Canon's large-area CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers approximately 12.8 million total pixels and 12.2 million effective pixels. This APS-C-sized sensor (22.0mm x 14.7mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is approximately 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length.

DIGIC 4 Image Processor: The next generation DIGIC 4 Image Processor uses advanced signal processing technologies to provide faster operations and write times to the memory card. The chip also enables Face Detection Live mode to detect and focus on multiple faces, while the Auto Lighting Optimizer corrects brightness and contrast automatically.

Image Recording: The camera records 3:2 aspect ratio still images in JPEG and RAW (14-bit Canon original) formats. You can choose from the following image sizes: Large, Medium, Small 1, Small 2, and Small 3. For each resolution (except Small 2 and Small 3), you can set the compression to Fine or Normal. For RAW images, you can record only at the highest resolution. You can set the camera to RAW + JPEG and record a RAW image and a Large Fine JPEG image simultaneously. The estimated number of images that can be stored on a 4 GB SDHC Memory Card is as follows:

Quality Recording Pixels Compression Number of Images
4 GB SDHC Card
Large 12.2M: 4272 x 2848 Fine 830
Normal 1600
Medium 6.3M: 3088 x 2056 Fine 1400
Normal 2630
Small 1 3.4M: 2256 x 1504 Fine 2130
Normal 4060
Small 2 2.5 MP: 1920 x 1280 Fine 2880
Small 3 0.35 MP: 720 x 480 Fine 11280
RAW 12M: 4272 x 2848 None 210
RAW + JPEG 12M: 4272 x 2848 RAW: None
JPEG: Fine
170

RAW File Format: The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera's CMOS sensor without further processing and converts it to digital data and records it onto the card as is. RAW images can be adjusted, then developed and produced into JPEG or TIFF images using the provided software.

Recording Media: The EOS Rebel T3 records images on an SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. It is also compatible with some brands of Eye-Fi cards that feature wireless transfer of images, although their performance is not guaranteed.

Note: No recording media is supplied with the camera.

Shooting Modes: The EOS Rebel T3 offers 14 different shooting modes arranged on the Mode Dial in the following zones:

  • Basic Zone:
    • Full Auto: The camera analyses the scene, and automatically selects the settings
    • Flash Off: Disables the flash for shooting in areas where flash photography is prohibited
    • Creative Auto: In this auto mode, you can still set the brightness, flash mode, sharpness, image recording quality, and picture style settings.
    • Portrait: Blurs the background to make the human subject stand out

    • Sports: For fast-moving subjects when you want to freeze the action
    • Night Portrait: This mode is for images of people at twilight or at night
  • Creative Zone:
    • Program AE: This is a general-purpose shooting mode, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness
    • Shutter-priority AE: In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject
    • Aperture-priority AE: In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness
    • Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired
    • Automatic Depth-of-field AE: This mode is for obtaining a wide depth of field automatically between a near subject and far subject
  • Movies: For recording movies (see below)

Shooting Movies: The EOS Rebel T3 can record movies in High Definition at 1280 x 720 at 30 fps. (You can change the frame rate to 25 fps if the clip is to be shown in areas where the TV format is PAL.) Movies are recorded in MOV format with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression, and Linear PCM audio. You can record audio in mono using the built-in microphone. When shooting movies, a large-capacity SD card with a speed rating of Class 6 or higher is recommended. Slower cards may not record your movies properly. The maximum file size of a single movie clip is 4 GB. The estimated total recording time on SDHC memory cards is as follows:

Movie Recording Size Total Recording Time
4 GB Card 8 GB Card 16 GB Card
1280 x 720 @30 fps 17 min 34 min 1 hr 8 min

9-Point Auto-Focus System: The camera features a high-precision 9-point wide area auto-focus that uses cross-type points with lenses f/5.6 or faster, enabling the camera to focus faster, more accurately, and in ever more complex lighting. In addition, the EOS Rebel T3 incorporates a diagonally mounted, high-precision cross-type sensor at the center AF point that is sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines when fast lenses (f/2.8 or faster) are used, for added accuracy and precision with these wide-aperture lenses. All focus points can be chosen automatically or manually.

AF Modes: The camera employs one of 3 AF systems to let you seize every photo opportunity with fast, accurate focus:

  • One-Shot AF: suited for still subjects, the camera focuses only once.
  • AI Servo AF: for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. The subject will be focused continuously while the shutter button is pressed halfway.
  • AI Focus AF: switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving.

Manual Focusing: If you choose to focus manually, you will need to set the focus mode switch on the lens from AF to MF, and turn the lens focusing ring until the subject looks sharp in the viewfinder.

ISO Speed: When shooting in Basic Zone modes, ISO speed is automatically set between 100 and 3200 to suit the shooting conditions. In Creative Zone modes, ISO speed may be set from 100 to 6400 in 1/3-stop increments. When ISO Expansion is turned on, you can also select an ISO speed of 12800. For Auto ISO, you can set the maximum ISO speed between 400 and 6400.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings:

  • Auto: the camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions, color temperature: 3000-7000 K
  • Daylight: for recording outdoors on a bright day, color temperature: 5200 K
  • Shade: counters strong blue tones in open shade on sunny days, color temperature: 7000 K
  • Cloudy: for cloudy days, dusk and dawn, color temperature: 6000 K
  • Tungsten Light: for incandescent illumination, color temperature: 3200 K
  • White Fluorescent Light: eliminates typical green color casts, color temperature: 4000 K
  • Flash Use: a starting point for studio strobes and Canon Speedlites, color temperature: 6000 K
  • Custom: enables you to manually set the white balance for a specific light source for better accuracy. By selecting this image, you import the white balance data for the setting, color temperature: 2000-10000 K
  • Other WB Settings:
    • Color Temperature: manually set color temperature from 2500-10000 K in 100 K increments
    • White Balance Correction: You can correct the standard color temperature for the white balance setting. It has the same effect as using a color temperature conversion filter or a color compensating filter. Each color can be corrected to one of nine levels.

Color Space: The color space refers to the range of reproducible colors. With this camera, you can set the color space for captured images to sRGB or Adobe RGB. For normal images, sRGB is recommended. In the Basic Zone modes, sRGB will be set automatically.

Shoot by Ambience: Except in the Scene Intelligent Auto and Flash Off Basic Zone modes, you can select the ambience for shooting. You can choose from Vivid, Soft, Warm, Intense, Cool, Brighter, and Darker, each at Low, Standard, or Strong effects. You can also choose a Monochrome setting, with Blue, B/W, or Sepia effects.

Picture Style: By selecting a picture style you can achieve various effects matching your photographic expression or the subject. Picture Style setting is not available in Basic Zone modes, except Creative Auto. Picture Style selections include:

  • Auto: the color tone is adjusted to suit the scene
  • Standard: image looks vivid, sharp, and crisp
  • Portrait: for nice skin tones, the image looks slightly sharp and crisp, color tone can be adjusted to change skin tone
  • Landscape: vivid blues and greens, very sharp and crisp image
  • Neutral: natural colors and subdued images, no sharpness applied. (recommended for users who prefer to process images on their PC)
  • Faithful: when the subject is photographed under a color temperature of 5200 K, the color is adjusted colorimetrically to match the subject's color, no sharpness applied  (recommended for users who prefer to process images on their PC)
  • Monochrome: for black and white images
  • User Defined 1-3: you can register your own Picture Style settings for Portrait and Landscape modes.

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-5 stops in 1/3-stop increments, although the indicator in the viewfinder can only display the setting up to +/-2 stops.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots. When in Single Shooting mode, the camera will change the exposure level on three single shots (requiring three presses of the shutter release). In Continuous Shooting mode, you can take three shots with one press of the shutter release, and the exposure levels will change with each shot taken.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

Bulb Exposures: When bulb is set, the shutter is open during the time you keep pressing the shutter button fully. Bulb is useful when a long exposure is necessary for capturing night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, etc. The optional RS-60E3 remote switch (280RS60E3, sold separately) is also recommended for bulb exposures. It connects to the camera's 2.5mm sub-mini remote jack.

Flash: The camera's built-in retractable, auto pop-up flash with E-TTL II autoflash metering. The flash takes approximately 3 seconds to recycle for the next flash. The viewfinder has an icon to let you know the flash is ready. You can set the exposure compensation for the flash to +/- 2 stops in 1/3-stop or 1/2-stop increments. The flash range varies with the ISO speed. Other flash functions include:

  • AF-Assist: Under low-light conditions, the built-in flash fires a brief burst of flashes when you press the shutter button halfway. This is to illuminate the subject to enable easier auto-focusing. It is effective up to approximately 13.1 feet away.
  • FE Lock: FE (flash exposure) lock obtains and locks the correct flash exposure reading for any part of a subject.
  • Red-Eye Reduction: Using the camera's Red-Eye reduction lamp before taking a flash picture will reduce the common phenomenon of red-eye effect.

External Flash: In addition to the built-in flash, the EOS Rebel T3 has a hot shoe for adding optional external flash units. The camera is compatible with Canon's entire line of EX-series Speedlites, plus Macro Lites for close-ups. Canon EX-series Speedlites offer professional-quality illumination for virtually any subject.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: the camera's standard metering mode utilizes 63 zones within the frame, and is suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions; after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure
  • Partial Metering: effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 9% of the frame at the center
  • Center-weighted Average Metering: metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene

Continuous Shooting Mode: In Continuous Shooting mode, you can shoot up to about 3 frames per second for JPEG, 2 fps for RAW, and 0.8 fps for RAW + JPEG. The maximum number of shots in a single burst will vary with the image quality setting. The maximum images in a single burst are as follows:

PictBridge Printing: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is a standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

Exif Print (Exif 2.21): The Canon EOS Rebel T3 conforms to Exif Print, a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with Exif Print are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

DPOF Print Settings: On the memory card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once, on optional Canon direct print function compliant printers, on PictBridge compliant printers, or at participating photo labs.

HDMI Outputs: The T3 is equipped with a mini-HDMI jack which allows you to connect the camera to an HDTV. The HDMI output terminal is CEC-compatible. A mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable, such as the Canon HTC-100 (280HTC100), is required.

Note: There is no analog audio/video output. The camera cannot be connected to a TV with an analog A/V cable.

Power Options: The EOS Rebel T3 operates on the supplied LP-E10 Lithium-Ion battery (7.2V/860 mAh). Battery performance decreases when used in temperatures below 32° F. The battery can be charged in the supplied LC-E10 battery charger in approximately 2 hours. Typical battery life for the LP-E10 battery is as follows:

  At 73°F (23°C) At 32°F (0°C)

Canon camera

Written By Tony B., Pottsville Pa. on Thursday, July 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was a good price, however im really not to impressed, im not really into camers that much so it was kind of hard to understand all the features, my point and shoot, a Panasonic fz35 was a lot easier to use, im really disappointed at the picture and video quality, its not much better than my point and shoot, outside in bright light it takes very good pics and videos but inside with normal light its not so good, everyone told me how important the image processor size was, so I thought it would really be better than my smaller point and shoot, but its not much better, the inside pics lack good clarity and detail and its the same with the video, it has a hard time focusing on close up images while shooting videos and pics, the lens keeps going in and out like it cant decide what the best shot is, im actually thinking of sending mine back, as I said im no pro with cameras but I know how to take a picture so I don't know what I could be doing wrong, outside in good light it takes very nice pics but dont most cameras, so over all im not impressed by this camera.
Pros:
Great price
Cons:
Not much better than my point and shoot under inside lighting,

I looked for a really long time to find the best deal for this camera. Crutchfield's service and prices could not be beat. So far my camera is perfect for a new photographer. I took pictures outside in the dark and on the beach and the pictures came out perfect!

Canon Eos Rebel T3 Kit

Written By Susan G., Lebanon, PA on Wednesday, January 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Canon EOS Rebel T3 takes beautiful pictures and can be as easy as point and shoot or as advanced as you want it to be. You can customize your photos and the camera makes you look like a pro, but you don't need to be an expert to get it right. It's a terrific value and a high quality camera. I expect to enjoy this camera kit for many years.
Pros:
Easy to use...professional results.
Cons:
You really need to invest in a telephoto lens to get good landscape and nature photos, and the lenses are a bit pricey.

WOW, Great Camera!

Written By Tony G., Jay, NY / Bagram Afghanistan on Friday, December 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Okay, for those of you who are unsure of the digital age and photography, here is your chance to get going. I'm a non-tech kind of guy and I purchased this camera to help get the photos I wanted. I was using a Nikon point-and-shoot camera and wasn't getting the results I desired. Canon has made this camera easy enough for a neanderthal like me to use and get the results of a pro! Okay, to be honest I still don't it all mastered, but some of my photos are impressive. I love to get feedback like: "Wow, your photos are crazy sharp & clear" or "The colors are eye-popping." The on-screen descriptions give me a comfort level to decide what to do when shooting photos. I'm even getting comfortable using the manual mode and selecting my own settings...imagine that! HA! I shopped around and decided on the Canon because they are the king of cameras. The Rebel EOS T3i seemed like a good place to start. After a month of ownership I'm very happy with my choice. Over all, this is a very good camera and worth every penny. It came with a CD full of instructions that I've yet to look at due to not having access to a computer for more than a few minutes at a time (I'm deployed to Afghanistan), wait until I get to check that out...watch out Ansel Adams! Don't delay, make the purchase!
Pros:
It's so easy to use. Like a all digital cameras, if you don't like the photo simply delete it and try again...and again...and again... Even with only 12.2 MP this is perfect for e-mail photos and blowing up prints to 8" x 11". These 12.2 MP are of the highest quality and worth every penny.
Cons:
The written instruction book is so-so. But, there is a CD full of detailed instructions to utilize.

Remarkable Camera, Remarkable Price

Written By Billy Bob, Columbus, OH on Saturday, February 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera was a Christmas gift for my wife. She has a Canon EOS Rebel G film camera which she loves, but grew tired of the hassle and expense of film. She transitioned to a Sony point-and-shoot digital which proved to be a disappointment, producing poor pictures. She was thrilled to get this camera and the lenses from her Rebel G work on this camera, although she loses the camera shake feature. Overall, she is excited and very satisfied with this product. I did my research using Consumer Reports and on-line sites. Everything I read led me back to this camera. It was the right choice and the right price.
Pros:
Ease of use, picture quality, Canon product quality
Cons:
No SD card included

Great Camera for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Camera for the price. If you are looking for an upgrade from the point and shoot, this is the camera for you. We bought this camera to take pictures of our 2 year old son who is always on the move. The camera allows us to capture shots of him quickly. I am glad that we didn't buy the higher end camera as it has a lot of features that we would have never used. Overall takes fast great pictures and is really easy to use.

Cannon Rebel T3 Camera

Written By Bonita, Minnesota on Thursday, January 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not a professional photographer & probably not even considered an amateur. I just wanted a nice camera. I was tired of all the small point & shoot cameras which took mediocre pictures. Having a tiny camera that fit in my pocket was not as important to me as having one that took decent pictures. I'm very satisfied with the camera and also with the Crutchfield site.

1 question already asked

Hi...I'm ready to move up from my beloved small and portable point and shoot that has taken some great pics all over the world. I'm looking into creating higher quality photos that I might sell retail. Would you recommend this camera for its ease of use and great quality photos without mortgaging the house? Many thanks C. [ Cheryl  Mar 26, 2014 ]

  • Monica V. mentioned that she could not see the image in the screen while focusing or taking the picture. My question is: How do you focus or how do you know you're getting all of the subject in the picture? [ Paula   Jul 18, 2014 ]
  • I am little slow, but I really like this camera. I had a film Rebel and I missed it. After several point and shoot Canons, I decided to get a digital Rebel. I love the way it feels, I had missed that. It takes nice pictures. My daughter has a very expensive Canon and she thinks this doesn't compare, but I didn't pay what she did either. It works for me. I wish I had time to try all the things it will do, but I still just "point and shoot". :) [ JOY   Apr 02, 2014 ]
  • The Canon EOS Rebel T3 has been great so far. I have owned 2 different Canon Powershots in the past, had great luck with these, reliable, and durable. So far the Rebel T3 has been the same, easy to use, and reliable. I have not been using it for retail photos, only personal use, but don't see why this camera can't do the job when in the hands of a professional. Best wishes, M [ MICHAEL J   Mar 27, 2014 ]
  • yes i do love the camera. i don't have much to compare it to though. my first quality digital. takes fast photos. the one down side is that you can't see the image in the screen when you are focusing/taking the photo. unless its on video or one other mode. i think some other cameras allow for this. not sure. not a big deal though. takes beautiful photos. very happy with them. my techy friends also recommended this one to me for bang for the buck. [ MONICA   Mar 26, 2014 ]
  • Yes, I like the camera very much. I would like to get a bigger zoom lens one of these days. Goodluck, Valerie [ VALERIE   Mar 26, 2014 ]
  • I bought this for wife, she loves it. I did a lot of research before we got the cannon. But we found out is to go with what you know Canon or whatever. Also it's the lenses not necessarily the body that gives you the quality of pictures that you want. I would recommend this camera has been very great for taking sports shots of our sons hockey games [ MATT   Mar 26, 2014 ]
  • Hello to you. I did the same thing moving from a point & shoot to this Canon Rebel SLR. This Canon works just great and is very easy to use. When I turn it on, its already in "Automatic" mode so I can just start taking pictures right away. I know that I can make adjustments other than Auto mode but using it this way makes it quick and simple. I had to wait with my other camera for the picture to "Save" to the memory card but this Canon does it fast so I can shoot another picture right away. It is a bigger and heavier camera to carry around but you will get used to that especially knowing what the Canon can do. The picture quality is so very good, so much better than my old point & shoot. I had always wanted to get myself a good SLR camera over the years and finally got this and I am very happy with it. Good luck. Joe... [ JOSEPH   Mar 26, 2014 ]
  • Yes. This camera is very easy to use and produces high quality photos. The only time I've not been able to get good photos is when I've tried to take action shots at distance in low light. The many different modes makes it easy to take just about any shot you want. [ JESSICA   Mar 26, 2014 ]
  • I purchased the camera as a gift and have not used it myself so I am unable to personally comment on it. From the research I did on it before buying it, I found many good reviews. [ Harry   Mar 26, 2014 ]
