Our take on the Canon PowerShot SX700 HS

by David Brown
Canon

Today's point-and-shoot cameras make great pictures easier than ever

From baby's first steps, to that dream vacation in the islands, these cameras make it easy to capture life's greatest hits. Today's cameras have helpful automatic features, like face detection and scene recognition that make shooting more foolproof than ever. And they all have plenty of megapixels for detailed photos that stay sharp, even when you enlarge and print them.

More zoom from less camera

Not too long ago, 30X optical zoom was pretty impressive for a large point-and-shoot camera with a DSLR-style body. Now, you can hit the 30X benchmark with a truly compact camera. The Canon PowerShot SX700 HS is a bona fide long-zoom champ, giving you the range to capture tight close-ups of distant subjects. Zoom-framing assist helps you keep those long-range subjects in the frame and in focus. With its telephoto capability and sharp image quality, the SX700 is versatile enough to document your week-long vacation, yet small enough to carry in a pocket, so you can travel light.

Wi-Fi makes photo sharing quick and easy

Thanks to the PowerShot SX700's built in Wi-Fi, it's a snap to wirelessly transfer images from the camera to your smartphone or tablet. Canon's free app for Apple® and Android™ even lets you use your smartphone as a remote, so you can set up the camera on a tripod and use the phone as a monitor and shutter release device. Pretty cool, especially when you consider the image quality and dependable low-light performance this camera offers over smartphone cameras.

Add easy creative touches to photos

Think you need advanced computer software and technical skills to add artistic flair to your photos? Not with Canon's easy Creative Shot mode. It lets you choose from a large selection of filter effects before you even snap a single shot. There are 46 filters divided among four categories: Retro, Monochrome, Special and Natural. Once you make your selection, the camera will automatically create and save five additional variations on your original, unfiltered shot. Then you can pick and choose your favorites for emailing to family members, posting on Facebook, or printing out to frame and keep for yourself.

    Recording Features

LCD Monitor: The Canon PowerShot SX700 HS has a 3" TFT LCD monitor, featuring 922,000 dots with approximately 100% picture coverage. The LCD display's brightness can be adjusted to one of five levels.

Note: There is no separate viewfinder on this camera.

Image Sensor: The camera is equipped with a 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor with 16.8-million total pixels, and 16.1-million effective pixels.

DIGIC 6 Processor: The SX700 HS is equipped with the DIGIC 6 image processor, which provides better image quality, improved light sensitivity, high-speed continuous shooting at up to 8.5 fps, and Full HD movies at 60p, as well as MP4 recording.

Optics: The SX700 HS has an 30x optical zoom lens with a 4.5-135mm focal length (35mm equivalent is 25-750mm).

Zoom: In addition to the 30x optical zoom, the camera features a 4x digital zoom. When used in combination, the total zoom is approximately 120x. When optical and digital zoom are combined, the total focal length is 25-3000mm (35mm equivalent).

Digital Tele-Converter: The focal length of the lens can be increased by an equivalent of 1.6x or 2.0x through the use of the Digital Tele-Converter. The equivalent focal lengths of the lens (35mm equivalent) are 40-1200mm when using the 1.6x digital tele-converter, and 50-1500mm with the 2.0x tele-converter. The digital zoom and digital tele-converter cannot be used simultaneously.

Zoom Framing Assist: At maximum telephoto, it can be difficult to keep your subject in the frame. The Zoom Framing Assist function allows you zoom out temporarily to locate your subject, then zoom back in to the original zoom position. This is made possible by holding in the Framing Assist button to zoom out, and releasing it to zoom back in. The Zoom Framing Assist function is available for still images and movies.

Optical Image Stabilization: The built-in lens shift-type Image Stabilizer helps control camera shake to give you clear images when you're zoomed way in. Image Stabilization can be used for Still Images (Dynamic IS), Panning (Powered IS), and Macro Shots (Hybrid IS). When using the camera on a tripod, the Image Stabilization is turned off for still images, but some stabilization is used for movies to counteract wind or other sources of vibration.

Built-in Wi-Fi: The PowerShot SX700 HS comes with built-in Wi-Fi technology, allowing you to share what you've recorded with friends, family, and the whole world. With the dedicated Mobile Device Connect Button, you can quickly and easily connect and share photos with your Android or iOS devices. The camera can wirelessly connect to and send images to the following:

    • Smartphone: The camera can connect directly to both iOS (version 6.0/6.1, or later) and Android devices (version 2.3, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 or later) via the free Canon CameraWindow app. For NFC-compatible Android smart phones (version 4.0 or later), you can make the wireless connection by simply touching the phone to the camera's NFC logo (left side).
    • Web Services: You can post your images to your favorite social networking sites through the Canon Image Gateway, or save them to the online photo album.
    • Another Camera: Share your photos with other Wi-Fi equipped PowerShot cameras.
    • Computer: Transfer images and video directly to your computer to update friends and family while you're traveling or away from home.
    • Printer: You can send images to a PictBridge-compatible printer (supporting DPS over IP) to print them.

Recording Media: The camera records still images or moving images with stereo audio on SD, SDHC, and SDXC Memory Cards. Still images are recorded in JPEG format, and the movies are recorded in MP4 format (Image data: H.264, Audio data: AAC (stereo)). The camera has no built-in memory, and no memory card is included with the camera.

Still Image Resolution/Compression: The SX700 HS can record still images in 4 different sizes (Large, Medium 1, Medium 2, and Small) and 4 aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 3:2, and 1:1). For each resolution, you can set the compression to Super Fine or Fine. You can choose from the following resolutions:

      4:3 16:9 3:2 1:1
    Large 4608 x 3456 4608 x 2592 4608 x 3072 3456 x 3456
    Medium 1 3264 x 2448 3264 x 1832 3264 x 2176 2448 x 2448
    Medium 2 2048 x 1536 1920 x 1080 2048 x 1368 1536 x 1536
    Small 640 x 480 640 x 360 640 x 424 480 x 480

Movies: Movies can be shot in Full HD at 1920 x 1080 at 60 fps, iFrame movies at 1920 x 1080/30 fps, or HD at 1280 x 720 at 30 fps. Standard definition movies can be recorded at 640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps. Audio is recorded in mono with the built-in microphone. Recording will automatically stop when either the clip file size reaches 4 GB or the recording time reaches approximately 30 minutes for Full HD or HD, and 1 hour for SD. SD Speed Class 4 or higher memory cards are recommended when recording movies.

Miniature Effect: In addition to shooting standard movies, you can shoot movies that look like scenes in miniature models. Miniature Effect HD movies are recorded at 1280 x 720, and you can choose between 6fps, 3fps, or 1.5fps. Miniature Effect VGA movies are recorded at 640 x 480 at 6, 3, or 1.5 fps. When played back at normal speed, people and objects appear to move quickly during playback.

Super Slow Motion Movies: You can shoot fast-moving subjects for playback later in slow motion. No sound is recorded. Clips of 30 seconds in length are recorded at a high frame rate, and are played back at normal speed. There are two options:

Frame Rate Image Quality Playback Time
    (30-sec clip)
    240 fps 320 x 240 Approx. 4 min.
    120 fps 640 x 480 Approx. 2 min.

Continuous Shooting Mode: You can use the continuous shooting mode to shoot successive frames while the shutter button is fully pressed. You can shoot full resolution images continuously at approximately 3.1 images per second. In the High Speed Burst mode, you can shoot four consecutive frames at approximately 8.5 fps.

Focusing Range: The camera features the following focus ranges (from the end of the lens):

    • Auto: 0.4" to infinity (W), 4.6' to infinity (T)
    • Sports Mode: 3.3' to infinity (W), 26' to infinity (T)
    • Normal: 2" to infinity (W), 4.6' to infinity (T)
    • Macro: 0.4" to 1.6' (W)
    • Manual Focus: 0.4" to infinity (W), 4.6' to infinity (T)

Shooting Modes: Using the mode dial on the back of the camera, you can switch between the following shooting modes:

    • Manual (M): You can manually set the shutter speed and aperture.
    • Aperture Priority (Av): You can set the aperture to a value at which you want to shoot, and the camera sets the appropriate shutter speed for the aperture you set. Aperture values can be set between F3.4 to F8.0 (W) and F6.5 to F8.0 (T).
    • Shutter Priority (Tv): You can set the shutter speed to a value at which you want to shoot, and the camera sets the appropriate aperture value for the shutter speed you set. Shutter speeds can be set between 15 and 1/2000 seconds.
    • Program (P): The camera sets both the aperture value and shutter speed.
    • Live View Control: When shooting in this mode, image brightness or colors can be easily customized using the camera's controls. You can adjust the Brightness, Color, and Tone.
    • Smart Auto: The camera chooses from 58 predefined shooting situations, and will automatically select the best settings for the scene.
    • Hybrid Auto: The Hybrid Auto mode lets you make a short movie of the day just by shooting still images. The camera records 2-4 second clips of scenes before each shot, which are later combined in a digest movie.
    • Creative Shot: The camera determines the subject and shooting conditions, automatically applying special effects and recomposing the shot to emphasize the subject. Six images are recorded for each shot. You can choose from the following effects for images: Retro (resembles old photos), Monochrome (one-color images), Special (bold, distinctive images), Natural (subdued, natural-looking images), and Auto (all effects).
    • Sports: The camera shoots continuously as the camera focuses on moving subjects.
    • Scene: Select from the following, according to the scene or effects desired: Portrait, Handheld Night Scene, Low Light, Snow, and Fireworks.
    • Creative Filters: You can add various effects to images when shooting, such as Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Fish-eye Effect, Miniature Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Soft Focus, and Monochrome.
    • Movies: Record movies in High Definition or Standard Definition in Standard Mode, iFrame Movie, Super Slow Motion, and Miniature Effect modes.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

    • Evaluative Light Metering: used for standard conditions. The area within the frame is divided into several zones and light is measured based on subject position, brightness, direct light and backlighting.
    • Center-Weighted Averaging: averages the exposure from the entire image, but places more weight on the subject at the center
    • Spot: meters the area within the spot AE point at the center of the LCD monitor or viewfinder.

Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -2 to +2 in 1/3-step increments.

Locking the Exposure Setting (AE Lock): You can set the exposure and focus separately. This is effective when the contrast is too strong between the subject and background, or when a subject is backlit. Flash Exposure Lock (FE Lock), just as with the AE lock, lets you lock the exposure for shooting with the flash.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings: Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, and Custom.

Flash Modes: The PowerShot SX700 HS has a built-in pop-up flash. You can select Auto (flash fires in low light), Slow-synchro, On (flash always fires), or Off (flash doesn't fire). The built-in flash has a range of 1.6' to 11' in Wide Angle and 3.3' to 6.6' in Telephoto. In the menu, you can turn on the Red-Eye Reduction lamp for the flash, and apply Red-Eye Correction to the images that have been taken.

ISO Speed: The ISO speed can be set Automatically (ISO Auto), or manually to ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, or 3200. Lowering the ISO speed results in sharper images but there's a greater chance of subject or image blurring in certain shooting conditions. Raising the ISO speed results in a faster shutter speed, reducing blurred images. The images, however, will appear more coarse.

My Colors: You can choose the look and feel of the photos you take by using My Colors to add the following effects to the image you are currently recording or have already recorded: Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, B/W, Positive Film, Lighter Skin Tone, Darker Skin Tone, Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, Vivid Red, and Custom Color.

Self-Timer: The SX700 HS utilizes a 10-second, 2-second, and a custom self-timer to allow the photographer to be included in the shot, or to avoid camera shake when using a tripod. The custom self-timer allows you to set the time delay to 1-15, 20, 25, or 30 seconds for up to 10 shots.

    Playback, Editing and Print Functions

Index Display: This feature allows you to view 6, 12, 36, or 100 images at once on the LCD monitor so that you can search for an image quickly. Movies cannot be played in the index playback mode. You can view the index display by rotating the zoom lever toward wide angle while the camera is in playback mode.

Filtered Playback: When there are many images on the memory card, you can filter and display them by a specified filter. You can also protect or delete all images at once while filtered. Available filters include: Name, Favorites, Shot Date, People, and Still Image/Movie.

Review Info: You can choose to display your photos/movies with No Information, Simple Information, or Detailed Information. When a smartphone with GPS is connected via Wi-Fi, you may also get a GPS Information display.

i-Contrast: Images with excessively dark areas, particularly faces or backgrounds, can be detected and automatically to the optimal brightness. Also, photos with insufficient contrast are also automatically corrected, to make subjects stand out better. You can choose from four correction levels, and save the corrected images as separate files.

Red-Eye Correction: You can correct red eyes in already recorded images. However, red eyes may not be automatically detected in some images such as faces near the screen edge, faces that appear extremely small, larger dark or bright in relation to the overall image and faces turned to the side or at a diagonal and faces with a portion hidden which prevents the Red-Eye Correction from working. You can choose to overwrite the file with the corrected image, or store the image as a new file, retaining the original image.

PictBridge: Using an optional Mini-B USB 2.0 cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer of any brand. In this way, you can make prints directly from the camera without having to connect to a computer.

    Battery Information

Power Requirements: The Canon PowerShot SX700 HS powered by the NB-6LH Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. The battery charges in about 2 hours in the included CB-2LY battery charger. For long periods of continuous use, or when connected to a computer, it is recommended that the camera be connected to the optional ACK-DC40 AC adapter kit. A fully-charged battery will last for approximately 250 shots (360 when Eco Mode is on), 40 minutes of movie recording time, 1 hour 10 minutes of continuous shooting, and 4 hours of playback time.

Date/Time Battery: The camera uses a built-in backup battery for maintaining the date and time data for about three weeks after the battery pack has been removed. By inserting a charged battery or connecting an AC adapter kit, the date/time battery can be charged in approximately 4 hours, even if the camera is not turned on.

Power Saving Functions: The camera is equipped with the following power saving functions:

    • Eco Mode: The screen will dim approximately 2 seconds after the camera is last operated. Approximately ten seconds after dimming, the screen turns off. You can "wake" the camera at this point by pressing the shutter button halfway to turn on the screen and continue shooting. After about 3 minutes, if no buttons are pressed, the power will turn off.
    • Auto Power Down for Playback Mode and Connection to a Printer: The camera power down approximately 5 minutes after the last control is accessed on the camera.
Note: The Power Saving Function will not activate during a Slide-Show or while the camera is connected to a computer.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Micro HDMI Output: The PowerShot SX700 HS is equipped with a Micro HDMI (Type D) output for connecting the camera to your HDTV. An optional Micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable is required.

A/V Output/Digital Terminal: The camera has a Mini-B Version 2.0 USB terminal to allow you to connect the camera to a compatible computer or compatible Canon printer via an optional USB cable. This USB 2.0 Hi-Speed-compatible terminal allows you to rapidly download images to your computer or printer. Through the same USB jack, you can connect the camera to a TV or video monitor using the optional AVC-DC400 AV Cable (composite video/monaural audio). You can set the video output to NTSC or PAL.

    Great Upgrade

Written By BobS, Zion, IL on Wednesday, July 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Already had an SX280 HS, and bought this primarily for the increase in zoom capability. Very happy so far. I little larger and heavier than the SX280 it's replaced, but that's to be expected. I think that the battery life issue that the SX 280 HS was most criticized for has been addressed with this model. I'm liking this new camera ... no issues so far. I like that the pop-up flash is now manually operated, with the camera display prompting you to do so. With that, you know to move your fingers away from the flash housing. I still forget that on occasion with the auto-flash on the prior model.
    Pros:
Build quality, ease of use, easy wi-fi set-up, image quality.
    Cons:
Flash placement, but to be expected with almost all competing compact super-zooms

    The Bomb !!!

Written By Paradise Reviewer, Hawaii on Tuesday, April 29, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After living with a Canon SX200 (12x zoom) for years and years I finally decided to upgrade to a new camera but nothing really got me excited until I read the specs on the Canon SX700. Having purchased a Canon SX40 (which has a 35x zoom (equivalent of 840mm) but is closer to the size of a DSLR) I was very excited to have a camera which is barely larger then my old Canon camera andt has the capability to do 30x (equivalent of 750mm.) Of course it is one thing to make a camera that can zoom far but to do it in a stable manner via the Intelligent IS (Image Stabilizer) AND crispy, sharp pics all being driven by the newest, very fast Canon Digic 6 Processor is nothing short of insanely great! Of course the camera also has the usual solid Canon build quality which you feel when holding it in your hands. I've been with Canon since the days of the Canon G2 at a mere 4mp and Canon makes some great cameras. This camera of course will take any SD card out there all the way up to the SDXC (SD Extra Capacity) memory cards. With my 32GB card I can take well over 4000 pictures in the maximum resolution and finest quality mode. That means I have lots and lots of space for pics and videos which it shoots very well also. The camera has a dedicated video button which is just icing on the cake.

I can't help but wonder why people complain in this day and age about battery life. I mean the batteries are cheap and they are so tiny it's easy to just carry an extra battery with you.
    Pros:
Size and performance is simply amazing, thank you technology and Canon. Beautiful build, solid and of the highest quality. Love the black color as it's very sleek and cool looking. Takes excellent pictures and you can get them at 4mp in very low light (a shooting mode.) Canon quality second to none. Ability to shoot a series of pictures and due to the new Digic 6 processor can keep up with the action. Compact size. (Carry it around in my pocket all the time.) Value vs Price thanks Cr
    Cons:
None, some may read this thinking I am somehow associated with Canon but in fact I am not. I just love my Canon SX700 and I don't find anything bad about it.

I love this camera! Vivid colors, 30X optical zoom is awesome. I can zoom into a butterfly, bird, mountain etc. Easy to use. Fast shipping and great costumer service by Crutchfield! This company had this camera listed on their website when no other site was showing in their list. Amazon was going to ship this camera one month later then Crutchfield. I couldn't even get it sooner on Canon.com. I love this camera and I highly recommend it to anyone. Happy sopping! Thank you Crutchfield team!

Is this camera HDR? [ Marlene  May 07, 2014 ]
    3 answers
    • What is HDR. So far i like this camera very much. [ Carol   May 08, 2014 ]
    • It has that feature, I haven't tested it yet. I absolutely love this little camera. I am a Professional Photographer and know what an engineering feat it was to incorporate a lens with this zoom rang, amazing! [ Frank R.   May 07, 2014 ]
    • No dedicated HDR mode. Depending what you need it has i-Contrast setting to enhance shadow brightness (I rather would turn it off and use photoshop or either to do it in post processing). You can still create HDR photo's with external software if you would use manual mode and manually create multiple pictures with different exposure settings (but I didn't find exposure bracketing on this camera to do this automatically). The full manual can be found on Canon's site. [ Roger   May 07, 2014 ]
I have an iPhone 4S . What are my limitations if I purchased this camera? I do not understand. This is the only thing keeping me from buying this camera. Thank you [ Marlene  May 07, 2014 ]

    • There should be no limitations with the 4s. As long as your iPhone as iOS6 or higher, then the app should work just fine. [ Jeff Staff  May 07, 2014 ]
