Jukebox in your dash

Nakamichi's NA788 CD receiver combines easily accessible controls with lots of music options, including AM/FM radio, a CD player, a USB port, SD card slot, iPod® and iPhone® controls, and an auxiliary input. The NA788 also offers a detachable faceplate for theft-deterrence, an unusual feature for double-DIN (4" tall) CD receivers. And this radio's striking looks will bring a little elegance to your dash.

Any way you want it

You can plug in your thumb drive, iPod, or select Android™ smartphone to the front USB port. For even more digital music, an SD card slot is tucked behind the detachable faceplate. The NA788 receiver handles WMA and MP3 files on recordable CDs, USB drives, or on SD cards. This versatile Nakamichi also includes an aux input for portables and a second front USB port designed just for charging a USB device that needs some juice.

The AM/FM tuner includes the Radio Data System (RDS), so you can check out the station info on the receiver's big display.

Hands-free calls, music streaming

Bluetooth provides you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible smartphone. A sensitive microphone built into the receiver's face picks up your end of the conversation. For convertibles and other noisy vehicles, Nakamichi also offers an external microphone (sold separately) which you can plug into the back of the receiver.

Sound quality to rock your ride

This Nakamichi's strong amp will impress you with its clean power, so turn it up if you want. You can use the 3-band equalizer for precise adjustment of the highs, mids, and lows, while eight EQ presets allow quick shifts to a tone curve that matches your music. The Listening Position function tailors the speaker balance for the best output for your location in the vehicle.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Great unit and killer sound, easy install and looks great. Having no problem with the tuner at all like some others have posted gets more stations than the factory unit and clearer reception. Only con is the acceptability of the usb ports, hard to open and close, and no contavts to make calls with blue tooth. Seems like that would have been an easy adition for the unit.

Pros: Great tuner reception, looks great, sounds great.

Cons: Hard to access USB Ports, No blue tooth access to phone contacts for making and caller ID for receiving calls.

i bought this unit for the name, I was after good sound quality. Well, the sound quality is good, but that's about all I like about this unit. Not much in terms of useable features on this thing and the back lighting is horrible. If you have the lighting adjusted so you can read the display during the day, the light around the volume control blinds you at night. And yah the cover over your auxiliaries are a joke. As far as value goes though it's not to bad but not great either.

Overall I'm happy with this unit. The bluetooth works well for receiving calls and the front panel USB ports are perfect for keeping your phone or IPod charged up.

Pros: Bluetooth connectivity; MP3/WMA/CD; and reasonably good radio performance.

Cons: The USB panel doors are very hard to open; at least in my installation as the dash kit extends out far enough to make it difficult to open the panel. Since the face plate is removable you can just pop the face off and open them but it is a bit of a hassle. Also it seems that the buttons for the preset stations should be on the driver side rather than the passenger side. The button placement may be good for setup but forces the driver to reach farther to change stations once they are set.

Lots of power...and a good deal for the price. For me, I needed the removable face. The next higher up model available was over $500.

Pros: Value, bluetooth streaming, and removable faceplate.

Cons: Not the latest and greatest. The phone could be a bit clearer. The caller sounds a little muffled, but the person on the other and can hear me clearly.

Wanting to choose something from old school; I wanted to see what Nakamichi had to offer versus its former self circa the 1990's. Remember when those non powered decks were close to $1000? Here was my criteria as my town had recently passed a hands free law:

Variable Color Display to match my car's red dash lights Bluetooth capabilities that included downloading contacts into the head unit Double Din

First off after getting it out of the box I realized the doors for the front inputs are attached with rubber. No hinges which I found a bit cheap. I pressed on as I wanted to hear how she sounded. After the installation was complete. Yep, awesome sound. Xbass feature as similar to other brands was cool. CD's played nicely. This is where the love affair ended. After pairing your mobile device, with the exception of answering a call you can do nothing on the deck. Redial only, no contacts downloadable to the deck. So, with a heavy heart I returned her.

    Pros: Old school cool

Cons: Nakamichi has 1/4 of the features that Kenwood, Alpine, and Pioneer have when it comes to bluetooth capability

Love it! I wanted no-touchscreen, tactile (buttons!), high quality sound, a variety of ways to play digital music, something that looks modest but handsome & cool, bluetooth. This ticks all the boxes. I * might * give the sound quality (& the whole unit) a five-star rating - the only thing is, the stock speakers on my '05 Subaru Legacy GT wagon are so bad, I can't really tell how good the sound might be :) Once I get around to putting in amp, sub & new speakers, I'll be able to appraise the sound quality & the 4V preamp outs. In other news, it looks great, very easy to use, bluetooth link-up is fast, effortless & consistent. I may have installed it one screw-mount setting too far back in the metal dash mounts, because I can't pop out the removable face plate. The little charging door & USB door (lower left / lower right) which some have mentioned are hard to open, it's true they are a little tricky. But this is a really minor annoyance. They can be opened, and the more you open & close them the more it loosens up the little rubber parts around each little door so it gets easier. I have made many phone calls from the car, and the mic does the job. It could be a little more sensitive so the caller can hear me more easily without my having to raise my voice at all, but no complaints from callers about clarity or volume. Value is definitely five-star. Thanks Crutchfield for suggesting this unit which I would never have found. It doesn't seem to be sold anyplace else at all.

Installed in my 2009 Chevy HHR. This is a very easy to figure out and use radio. I am impressed for the value! Crutchfield's packaging of adapter wires and installation bracket made installing extremely easy. A good suggestion to splicing wires (instead of soldering); strip them, twist them together and use "shrink tube" to cover and seal them. It can be had at any electronic or hardware store ($1 at Harbor Freight) and all that's needed is a lighter to activate it! The top two tabs on the installation bracket have to be cut off. You will notice this when you put the dash panel back on. Use a wire snip to cut this. I installed this in about 45 minutes.

Pros: Easy to install. Excellent fit. Good sound. Looks as though it original to the car!

    Cons: Nothing.

Purchased this unit for 2004 Subaru Outback sedan and I wanted to love it but unfortunately after a day with it installed ultimately wound up exchanging it for the Kenwood DPX500BT.

The install was actually pretty out of the ordinary, the side mount points where the unit screws to the dash bracket are such that the only way to fit it so that the dash trim can be refitted is to have it positioned so deep into the dash that once the trim is put back the access doors on the bottom left and right of the unit which house the charging and data USB ports as well as the auxiliary 3.5mm port are totally inaccessible. For the same reason, the detachable face (which I thought was awesome for a double-DIN unit) was hindered and unable to fully detach.

One other thing with this unit that I found odd and ultimately a deal breaker was that for the BT Audio input, the audio settings would reset themselves each time the unit was turned off and on again. They simply would not save. Unacceptable.

Pros: Sound, power, quick charge USB port, simplicity of form

Cons: Install, unable to save audio settings for BT Audio input

I wanted to love this unit but have wound up just being "ok" with it. The stock photo made it look like the face of this unit was more matte black than shiny - I even did an online chat with a Crutchfield rep to confirm. Not so - the radio is more glossy than I had hoped for as I was trying to closely match the muted tones of my dashboard. Installation went well and, as usual, the Crutchfield supplied harness and face plates were of excellent quality.

The product description and the box say that the unit had 32K variable color. In my world, "K" means "thousand" so I incorrectly thought there was an amazing number of color combinations to choose from. I was trying to match the colors of my instrument cluster and was not happy to learn that there are a relatively small number of colors to chose from. On top of that, most are way to bright for night driving. Why don't manufactures provide for dimming?

Another annoyance are the input plug cover doors, which when "open" are tethered by rubber straps. The doors hang awkwardly in the way, so I decided to cut them off.

Sound is good, ease of operation is fine and the unit is a handsome replacement for my factory stereo that did not have an Aux input or Bluetooth features.

Pros: Handsome unit with a nice feature set at a reasonable price. Built-in Bluetooth mic is a plus.

Cons: Stock photo a bit misleading. Weird Aux input and USB covers awkwardly attached via rubber straps. Misleading # of color variations. Engine electrical noise when using Aux input.

Installation was pretty much straight forward. Unit fit 2-din panel perfectly. The variable color panel illuminate very cool especially in the evening. The bluetooth hands free call and audio are very convenience. The Xbass boost base so nice. I should upgrade rear speaker for more performance. This unit changed so much in driving experience in positive way. I am please to own this Nakamichi brand.

Pros: Bluetooth features. Nice looking in dash unit.

Cons: There is no song info in display panel.

I got this unit for my 2005 Toyota 4runner. Overall the unit is cool, variable colors eq and all the other cool stuff. The bluetooth is great on this unit and has good sound quality and connection. The fm/am quality is a joke. trying to listen to local radio stations is practically impossible, the sound goes in and out and fades between all bass and all treble, im not sure if this is every unit or just mine. on the other hand the bluetooth is great. my phone syncs seamlessly and the mic is built into the unit which leads away from any sketchy mic installation.

    Pros: Built in mic bluetooth

    Cons: am/fm qualtiy

Excellent in dash unit for the money. Sound quality reminds me of the Nakamichi studio equipment I used to listen to in my youth. Rich bass with the bass boost, SD card with my favorite play lists, aux in and the Bluetooth hands free.... all awesome.

Pros: Sound quality, Bluetooth, Simple controls, Easy installation.

Cons: No shuffle feature for SD card ... silly but I think it was an oversight.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Aux Input: A front-panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of almost any portable audio source with a 3.5mm headphone output (great for those non-Apple devices). Simply connect your portable digital music player to the unit's front-panel auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

5-Chanel Pre-Outs + Sub Control: The Nakamichi NA788 features a pair of fading front- and rear-channel pre-outs (4V), as well as a mono-subwoofer pre-out (3V). When the subwoofer pre-out is used, you are able to adjust its low pass crossover (80/120/160Hz) and gain level (0-12).

3-Band EQ w/ Presets:  There are eight sound presets (Pop, Techno, Rock, Classic, Jazz, Vocal, User, and Off/Flat) that allow you to easily recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. For further adjustment, the in-dash CD receiver features a built-in 3-Band EQ for manual adjustment of Treble, Midrange, and Bass.

Bass Boost: The head unit employs DBSS and XBass to dynamically boost bass sound safely at any volume level.

Listening Position:  This innovative "Listening Positioning" technology enables the driver or passengers to enjoy music with the best speaker balance and experience a more vivid spatial effect. Choose from Front All, Front Left, Front Right, or Zone Off.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation.

AM/FM Tuner: The Nakamichi NA788 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering manual, seek, & preset tuning. The built-in tuner provides 3 FM banks and 2 AM banks. You can store 6 radio stations in each bank, giving you 18 FM and 12 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically. To receive more radio stations or only stations with strong signals, you can adjust the radio sensitivity (Local Seek feature).

Note: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.
