If you've got a sophisticated home theater system, then lightning strikes are not the only electrical threat to your gear — even minor power fluctuations can be wearing on your gear. Components such as flat panel displays and high-performance receivers need safe, clean power to operate efficiently and effectively. The Panamax MAX® 5300-EX safeguards up to 11 components from catastrophic power spikes and surges, and also protects your DSL and satellite phone line connections.

A large, easy-to-read digital voltmeter displays the incoming AC voltage. Panamax's circuitry detects when this voltage level is too low or too high, automatically disconnecting the power to your gear, then reconnecting it when the voltage returns to safe levels. As a result, your equipment runs smoother and lasts longer.

Plus, the 5300-EX filters out electrical interference that can degrade your system's performance, including noise generated by radio stations, cell phones, microwave ovens, and other household appliances. The power conditioner's outlets are divided into three isolated banks, preventing interference between your components. With the MAX 5300-EX, your system will deliver cleaner sound and a better picture.

Features

Level 4 Power Cleaning and Filtration: Level 4 Power Cleaning and Filtration eliminates common symptoms of contaminated power (including loss of detail, pops, hisses, hums and visual artifacts) and allows your A/V equipment to perform up to its full capability.

AVM Circuitry: Panamax's patent pending AVM circuitry continuously monitors the incoming power and amperage draw of connected equipment as displayed on the digital meter. A red lightning bolt below the voltmeter will flash to indicate an under or over voltage condition. Power to the connected equipment is automatically turned off if either of these conditions is detected. When voltage returns to a safe level, power to the equipment is automatically reconnected.

SignalPerfect Technology: The SignalPerfect technology provides application specific protection for your satellite and cable TV equipment. The satellite connection is for a coaxial cable connected to a DBS satellite dish. The antenna connection is for a non-amplified off-air antenna or cable TV line.

Noise Isolation: The MAX 5300-EX is designed to provide noise isolation between 3 isolated outlet banks, including 2 high current outlets. Any noise created by an A/V component cannot contaminate the power going to equipment plugged into the other outlet banks.

Protect or Disconnect Circuitry: When the MAX 5300-EX is subjected to a high voltage surge, its voltage output is limited to a safe level and the high levels of surge current are diverted away from the connected equipment.

Voltmeter: The backlit Voltmeter monitors the incoming voltage from the wall receptacle and provides a visual representation of the available power. The Voltmeter is always on and indicates the incoming line voltage even during an unsafe voltage condition.

Meter Light Button: A Meter Light button to the left of the Voltmeter allows you to adjust the brightness level of the Voltmeter backlighting to one of the following: Low, Medium, High, or Off.

Sequential Startup/Shutdown: Complex audio/video systems may be susceptible to voltage transients generated internally at start-up/shutdown if all of the equipment is powered on or off at the same time. This can cause speaker "thumps," which can damage your speakers. The MAX 5300-EX is designed to eliminate these transients by providing a "start-up" delay for the High-Current outlets and a "shutdown" delay for the switched outlet bank.

Outlet Bank 1: Four outlets remain On continually to provide a constant power source for programmable audio/video components. Power for the bank is cleaned by a three-stage balanced Pi filter. Power will only be turned off under a fault connection.

Outlet Bank 2: Four switched outlets will turn your connected equipment On or Off with one of two triggers: the front-panel power button or the DC trigger input. The outlets will turn on immediately and turn off after 10 seconds. EMI/RFI noise filtration is provided by a three-stage balanced Pi filter.

Outlet Bank 3 (High-Current): The two switched, high current outlets are controlled by the front panel power button or the DC trigger input. The outlets have a 5-second turn on delay and they turn off immediately. The High Current outlets provide power from a low impedance noise filtration circuit that does not limit the current to your equipment.

Convenience Outlet: A single outlet on the front panel of the MAX 5300-EX provides an easy-to-reach power source for components like video game systems and camcorders.

Voltage Sense Trigger: This feature provides an On/Off trigger for the MAX 5300-EX using a 3-24VDC remote control signal. Many components such as pre-amplifiers and receivers have a 12VDC trigger built in, and will transmit a constant power signal when turned on and in use. This power signal will initiate the startup or shutdown sequence of the MAX 5300-EX's switched outlets. The MAX 5300-EX Voltage Sense Trigger input uses a standard 1/8" mini-plug jack.

Circuit Breaker: The circuit breaker will trip only if the total current draw exceeds the maximum current rating (15A).

$5,000,000 Lifetime Connected Equipment Warranty: Panamax will replace, pay to replace at fair market value, or pay to repair, up to $5,000,000 of equipment that is damaged by an AC surge while connected to a properly installed Panamax surge protector, if the surge protector shows signs of surge damage or is operating outside of design specifications.

Status Indicators: The MAX 5300-EX has the following status LEDs on the front panel: Bank 1 Always On, Bank 2 On, Bank 3 On, and Wiring OK.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very pleased with this product. I bought may first panamax unit 13 years ago. I started to get a ground hum on my TV and receiver and figured that was time to upgrade The setup was easy, even though I had to deal with my A/V plugs!! After installing the unit I heard absolutely nothing but sweet music. Even my wife finds it simple to use!

I bought the Panamax Max 5300-EX to protect my Home theater system from lightning storms when i'm away and can't be there to unplug my system .This is a good deal and had a better quality rating than the the over sized power strips .I read in a lot of reviews of problems with the power strips not resetting after being tripped by a power spike .And to pay $150 for a possible one time protection power strip was no deal even though it was cheaper . So there was no other choice for me . Excellent Quality ....... Panamax Rocks ....

Good value for this price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit arrived very well packed, with the original carton placed inside of a generic brown-box shipping carton (no logos visible - Thanks, Crutchfield).

I integrated the unit into my system. Here is what I observed:

- Outlet Bank 1 will always turn on if the unit is plugged in. So you can never really turn the unit completely "off" without unplugging it. The good thing is that the unit waits about 5 seconds after plugging it in (or, until after stable line power is restored) before it energizes Outlet Bank 1.

- Outlet Bank 2 is turned on or off by either the DC Trigger input, or by holding the front power button for 2 seconds. When turning on, it does so immediately after holding the button for 2 seconds.

- Outlet Bank 3 turns on about 5 seconds after Outlet Bank 2. This helps prevent damage to amps of powered subs plugged into it.

As far as filtering goes, there was no improvement, or noticeable degradation, of audio or video fidelity. I really didn't expect that there would be, as my power and cable signals are pretty clean. I also did not seem to loose any bi-directional capability, as my cable "on demand" services are still functioning properly.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the unit. I think that it's worth the money for what it does.

Excellent product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the final component to my home theater system, and it was definitely worth the price! I figured it was better to invest in a nice surge protector, as opposed to the 10 year old ones I had. Crutchfield shipping was excellent as usual. There was virtually no setup to this product- just plug all of your components into the back of the unit (which is nicely labeled), including your coaxial cable for cable/satellite. I noticed a difference in the picture immediately; it was much clearer due to the line conditioning. You can't beat the price; if you are on the fence, go for it...you won't be disappointed.

Works as promised

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In a way this power line conditioner and surge protector feels a little bit over the top. I live in a very new neighborhood and the display has shown voltage levels between 119 and 123 volts. Nothing to worry about. I can't speak for its filtering abilities because I have no way to tell if this is needed or working well (the sound of my audio system did get clearer, but I installed new speaker cables at the system, confounding the situation).
The main reason I bought this power strip on steroids is that I really like the outlets in the back, and the way in which it allows me to organize my cables in my cabinet. The peace of mind that comes with it is very nice too.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I purchased my new home theater system, I wanted to get some equipment to protect it. This product has been a great addition to my system. I had multiple surge protectors for my old system. However, this device is working great. We already had a power surge last week during high winds. All banks were automatically cut off and after a few seconds, everything was turned back on. Nothing was damaged and I couldn't be more pleased with the preformance of this product.

An Excellent Piece of Equipment

Written By Francesca, Chicago, IL on Sunday, February 15, 2009

It's hard to comment on how well a protective piece of equipment like this works, because if it works well, you never see a problem - and I certainly haven't. In addition to providing some fine peace of mind, the unit is solid and well-made, and the rear-panel outlets are excellently labeled and conveniently laid out. It looks really, really cool, too, with a sci-fi blue glow from its round line-voltage indicator. Perhaps best of all for a home theater, it has a convenient, front-panel button that cycles that nifty blue glow on, through two levels of dim, or turns it completely off, without affecting the power at all.

Excellent Surge Protector

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product at a great price. It does exactly what it says it does and is quick and easy to set up. The power cord is longer than others which makes it especially convenient to use. My only complaint is that the outlets are closely spaced so if you are protecting something with a "brick," it will probably cover one of the outlets.

Great Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a surge protector / power line conditioner that would fit nicely in a media cabinet / TV stand and came across this. I own other Panamax products and have always been impressed by their technical specs and fit/function. This one is no different.

First, it's nice having a conditioner that fits in the cabinet like a component, eliminating the need to try to awkwardly fit something between the cabinet and wall. The styling goes great with other A/V components, and adjustable lighting on the front, as well as the extra outlet are a big plus. The outlets and coax / phone / ethernet jacks are well spaced and marked on the back of the unit.

I haven't experienced a lightning strike or under-voltage situation with this unit yet, but based on the tech specs, Panamax reputation, and other reviews I'm confident this is the right choice for a home theater. I would have been hesitant paying full price, but with this savings you can't beat it.

This is a nice product. I purchased for the purpose of surge protection for my audio/video system. This is my first Panamax product and I am impressed. The fact that it was on sale also was a great bonus. A fine value.

It works as you would expect.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first purchased this I had my reservations about it being overkill.
I've had this product on my sound system/HDTV down stairs for over two
years now. During that time we've had lighting storms, hail storms,
hurricane Ike and the worst of all nearby road construction that created a
number of brown outs. Working out of my home I've been there during the
day when the electricity went off and on repeatedly three and four times
straight. Once the power stayed on, I could hear the Panamax sequential
turn-on. A real comfort knowing my equipment was off during the surges.

As I was researching new equipment for a media room, I often heard of
complaints about electrical interference with the TV. Complaints often
blame cables, receivers, TV's, cable boxes and so on. These people need
this product. A protecting for your investment at this price is a no brainer. I
purchased another one for my new media room because it has proven to
me it's value.

Hopefully you will not need this, but if you ever do, I hope you have it or
something similiar.

No Brainer!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was on the fence about spending this much on a "power strip", but after seeing products with less capability and only $50-100 less I did some more research. In the end I think that this is pretty cheap insurance for a home theater that costs $1500-2500 or more. Companies make similar products, but like the higher end Panamax models they come at a price.

The best feature, IMO, is simply the number of outlets and the spacing. I have the power brick for my wireless router here and don't lose any outlets. It is interesting to see the AC voltage move between 119 and 121 - not sure if this is something that my plasma would really care about, but why take chances? I think that anyone buying a home theater would be foolish to not at least consider this purchase.

Excellent choice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live in the "Lightning Capitol of the World" and having lost my last HT receiver to it I decided to purchase the Panamax. Within the first week we had a lightning strike very close to the house and the chill went down my spine when the unit shut everything off. Then a few minutes later everything came back on and all was well. Just for that security I would have purchased one of these at the retail price let alone getting the great price and the Crutchfield service. The only downside for me was the unit is over 4 inches thick and takes up a lot of room in my cabinet. This is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5.

Quality at an affordable Price!

Written By Dave M., Westminster, MA on Saturday, February 02, 2008

Great price at $250 which is comparable to some of the upper end power strips which don't give the same level of power protection and most importantly the noise filtration this unit provides. I do a lot of research before purchasing just about anything and there is nothing but good feedback on this unit. Will you be able see or hear a noticable improvement on your TV screen (my cable provider has great signal/picture quality anyways) or when listening to CDs? I haven't but it has been able to eliminate some minor external interferrence from things like the microwave and the vacuum cleaner and by passing those extreem tests it has to be doing what it says it does. Extreemly easy and fast to hookup and I like how it's a component rather than a power strip burried behing everthing else. I also like how you can stack other components on top since it doesn't have any vents to worry about. The multi level dim/lightsout is also great if you're worried about it distracting you from night/movie viewing on your TV (since when on the brightest setting it is a very cool bright blue color). Definitely feels, looks and was shipped like a high quality item. I would recommend this product.

Fantastic Power Protection unit

Written By Michael, Long Island, NY on Wednesday, December 05, 2007

Wonderful unit for power protection, easy to set up, excellent build quality. Thankfully I haven't had the opportunity to see how it responds to a lightning strike or power outage, but I'm sure it will do well. It's fantastic to have the diagnostic lights on the front, you can dim them or turn them off completely for home theatre viewing. Highly recommended and at the Crutchfield price, it's a steal!
