About the Panamax MR4000

Steve Kindig

Clean, dependable power for your home theater

If you took a survey of Crutchfield employees, you'd find a lot who protect their systems with Panamax power conditioners, including me. The Panamax MR4000 will guard your audio/video system from damaging power spikes as well as the minor day-to-day current fluctuations that can compromise your system's performance over time.

Clean, dependable power for your home theater

Panamax MR4000

Protect your entire system with a total of eight AC outlets, plus in/out sets of coaxial and LAN connections.

Top-quality picture and sound start with clean power

With today's high-definition video and high-resolution audio sources, it's more important than ever to keep noise to a minimum. The seven rear-panel AC outlets employ Panamax's Level 2 noise filtering, which significantly reduces AC line noise.

The MR4000 offers multiple layers of surge protection. Panamax's patented Automatic Voltage Monitoring (AVM) technology continuously monitors the incoming power. In case of an under-voltage or brownout (too little electricity), or an over-voltage (too much electricity), the power to your equipment is automatically switched off. When voltage returns to a safe level, power to the equipment is automatically reconnected.

The other layer of surge protection is Panamax's exclusive Protect or Disconnect™ technology. This ultra-fast circuitry completely protects your equipment from catastrophic surges such as those caused by lightning. When that type of extreme event occurs, the MR4000 automatically disconnects AC power to your equipment.

Additional protection for coaxial and LAN connections

The MR4000 also provides one set of in/out coaxial terminals to shield your satellite, cable TV or over-the-air antenna connections. A pair of protected Ethernet jacks lets you plug in your laptop and surf the web on a protected connection.

Features

8 Protected & Filtered Power Outlets: The Panamax MR4000 features one front-panel AC outlet and seven rear-panel outlets. All of the AC outlets (front & back) include surge protection and noise filtration.

  • Rear-Panel AC Outlets: The MR4000 features seven protected and noise filtered rear-panel AC outlet to protect all your AV gear.
  • Front-Panel AC Outlet: The MR4000 features a protected and noise filtered convenience outlet located on the front-panel. Perfect for temporary gaming systems, portable electronics (such as music players or smartphones), or other personal electronics.
Note: All outlets (front & back) can be switched on/off from the unit's front-panel power button.

Protect or Disconnect Technology: The Panamax MR4000 employs exclusive Protect or Disconnect technology for surge protection. This ultra fast protection circuitry completely protects your equipment from surges such as lightning. When overwhelmed with extreme catastrophic events, Panamax permanently disconnects AC power to equipment.

Automatic Voltage Monitoring (AVM): Panamax's patented Automatic Voltage Monitoring (AVM) technology continuously monitors the incoming power. In case of an under-voltage or brownout (too little electricity) or an over-voltage (too much electricity) a flashing red lightning bolt will be displayed and power to the equipment is automatically turned off. When voltage returns to a safe level, power to the equipment is automatically reconnected.

Level 2 Noise Filtration: All outlets of the Panamax MR4000 employ Level 2 Noise Filtration; a proprietary technology for removing various types of performance robbing electrical noise from your connected AV equipment.

Signal Wire Protection: Protecting a complete home theater system requires that signal wires coming out of the wall be protected as well. Universal ultra low-loss coaxial protection, as well as LAN/Ethernet protection prevents signal lines from carrying damaging surges while maintaining full high-definition and high-speed Internet signals to your equipment for your connected life.

  • LAN Surge Protection: There is one RJ-45 input and one RJ-45 output for 10/100 baseT Ethernet lines. LAN protection allows for 10/100 base-T Ethernet equipment to integrate into an audio/video system without the risk of upstream surge damage from a gateway, switch, router or other network device.
  • Cable & Satellite Surge Protection: There is one gold-plated coaxial input and one gold-plated, threaded, female coaxial output for connecting your satellite, cable or antenna TV signal lines. Coaxial protection circuits prevent damaging surges from entering through signal paths and have the smallest signal loss on the market; less than 0.5 db of attenuation from 0Hz to 2.2GHz. Panamax coaxial protection has been specifically designed to virtually eliminate signal loss. The clamping level of 75V will meet and exceed the demands of both cable and satellite voltages while minimizing exposure to damaging spikes and surges.

Front-Panel Lights: Blue decorative lights add an attractive look and feel to your equipment rack or entertainment cabinet.

8' Power Cord w/ Low-Profile Plug: The Panamax MR4000 is fitted with an attached 8' power cord w/ a low-profile IEC 3-prong plug. This 45° angle low profile plug allows your equipment to be as close as it can get to the wall outlet while not blocking any adjacent outlets. The 8' power cord means your installation location isn't restricted by wall outlet location.

Circuit Breaker: A circuit breaker is located on the back panel of the MR4000. The circuit breaker will trip only if the total current draw exceeds the maximum current rating (15A). This means that collectively, all outlets must draw more than 15 amps before the circuit breaker will trip.

Rack-Mount Brackets: The MR4000 comes with rack-mount brackets to mount it in a 1U rack space.

$5,000,000 Lifetime Connected Equipment Warranty: Panamax will replace, pay to replace at fair market value, or pay to repair, up to $5,000,000 of equipment that is damaged by an AC surge while connected to a properly installed Panamax surge protector, if the surge protector shows signs of surge damage or is operating outside of design specifications. For coverage conditions and information on how to make a claim, please see the warranty sheet.

Q
Hi - wondering if I can place my amp on top of this unit - does Panamax specify a stackable weight limit? Amp is approx 30 lbs. I'd rather keep the top of the amp open, hence surge protector would go underneath it.
alexf  Sep 02, 2023

A
Greetings Alex, and thank you for your question. There is no stackable weight limit listed. The depth of this unit is only 7 and 5/16ths of an inch. Most amplifiers are much deeper. I have this unit myself, and stack a music streamer, and Ring alarm pro base station. Both are pretty light weight, but supporting a 30 pound amp it was not designed for.

Q
can this unit adequately supply a McIntosh MC7205 5 ch amp & a Krell S-1000 preamp/pro at the same time?
gary  Jul 24, 2023

A
The Panamax MR4000 Power line conditioner is a very good unit and can protect and condition the power adequately, but it has no high-current outlets that can be used with your Mcintosh power amp. With the specifications and quality of your current gear, you will need to use a conditioner with those high-current capabilities, Gary. I would consider the Panamax M5300-PM in the link below. This unit adds two of the High-current outlets (one needed for your Mcintosh) as well as the additional front panel display for voltage monitoring! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_299M5300PM/Panamax-M5300-PM.html

Q
Does equipment like this draw any power when left idle? I mean, when the unit itself is powered on, but no device is plugged in (or everything plugged in is physically switched off). Thank you
lajos  Apr 25, 2023
1 answer
A
This Panamax MR4000 will draw a small amount of power when not in use, mainly drawing current to light the small LED on the front panel. You do get an on/off button for the lights specifically, so you can lessen the small current draw when in idle as much as possible! No power consumption specs are listed by Panamax sadly, so there is no way to tell the exact amount of draw. The Panamax is an excellent solution for power conditioning and protection, especially with the protected equipment guarantee!

How much can it take? I'm searching for a protector where I can plug my monitor, PC, PS4,AMP and Sub-woofer. I'm from Puerto Rico and we get power outages too much for our own good. Need to protect all of those.

I haven't over-taxed my MR4000, but I do have two Quad powered speakers, a Rogue Cronus Magnum amplifier, HB CD player, a turntable, and a cassette player plugged into this machine. I didn't anticipate the subtle but noticeable improvement in sound quality I experienced; it made a difference.
mark  Dec 29, 2021

There are 7 outlets; in mine, I have my blu ray player, VHS player, CD player, receiver/amplifier, and subwoofer hooked up. I have had no issues, but the power outages have been minor where the clocks need to be reset after losing power for a couple hours. My other Panamx shuts off the blu ray player when the boiler kicks on for heat which lasts for a few seconds, I don't mind as it's doing its job, shutting off to avoid a power surge as I live in an old house, and it happens about half the time the boiler kicks on. I do shut them off when lightning storms are raging as I do not want to press my luck....

I've had this unit for some time and I have no complaints. What you have to consider is how many units you're plugging into it and how much power they're going to draw. I have my Receiver, Directv box, Room lights, charging tower and a couple of other things plugged into mine. No problem and...a great price for this unit. Good luck down there with the power outages. Those can be a real bother.

My Panamax mr 4000 is always on. I tried to turn it off but it turns right back on. Is that normal? Thanks

Hi. Yes is normal for full circuit protection.
rafael i resto  Mar 20, 2021

The light is always on but I think it is slightly brighter when the switched outlets are off. Several of the outputs on the back of the unit are not switched, while others are. If you have an item plug into a switched outlet then when you turn off the unit (ie, push the power button) that item will no longer have power to it. Try it works. I don't remember which outlets are switched but it shows you on the back of the unit. Good luck.
glen  Mar 19, 2021

Make sure you fully press the power button. It goes in there deep, with a big finger you may see the powerlight go off, but comes back on when you release. Make sure you hear and feel the click when pressing and depressing the power button.

Q
On the front panel of the mr4100, what does the red triangle warning light, with a picture of an electrical outlet in it mean? Everything was working fine, then just stopped with this warning light turning on. Everything plugged into the 4100 is no longer powered up.

It's the "Unsafe Voltage Indicator". When on, it indicates that incoming voltage is unsafe and the surge protector has disconnected the power to protect the unit. Good luck! KC
ken  Jan 12, 2021
A
Could this be due to a blown fuse? Check to see if the wall outlet is active. If so, the problem has to be inside the unit. Recommend you contact Crutchfield's technical assistance people.

Q
Wall mountable?
mike  May 31, 2020
2 answers
A
Not easily. It comes with attachable brackets for Rack Mounting. Depending on your skill as a carpenter (or someone you know or can hire) I'm sure it could be attached to a wall. But if you surface mount it ('feet' to the wall) power cords would be hanging from one side, and the display / alert LED's would be difficult to see.If you are thinking inserted into the wall you have to take into account the unit is over 12-inches deep; and that's before adding any power cords connecting to it.
richard l.  Jun 10, 2020
A
It's made to be rack mountable. I'm not sure how you would attach to a wall (maybe L brackets attached to the rack ears?), but if you were to rig something up, can't see why it wouldn't work.

I plug any and all of my audio equipment from turn tables mixers amplifiers and receivers, into a power conditioner. It takes the bugs out and cleans up the signal.
andrew  Nov 24, 2019
Q
Im only interested in buying for the EMI/RFI filtration. Are all the outlets filtered or just the rear ones? Are the LAN and Coax filtered? Will this clean up my audio and video signals to my equipment?
anthony  Jun 06, 2018
1 answer
A
Hello, all outlets are filtered and protected from the input plug but, the LAN and Coax are just surge protected because they're digital connections. For more information on levels of protection please look up the data sheet on the unit.
john  Jun 12, 2018
Q
Can I use the LAN & Coax in/out for whole system protection? I.e. input the main cable line into my house then out to the various locations? Similar for the LAN? Can I put the Panamax between my modem and router?
gerald  Apr 07, 2018
1 answer
A
The coaxial and/or LAN input & output can be used to protect your incoming cable Internet signal from carrying damaging surges while maintaining full high-speed bandwidth to your equipment. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!

james  Mar 01, 2018

I am not sure, but my house was built in the 1980's. It has perfectly fine. I would recommend it for protection against surges. I have (3) Panamax units and they are worth the money versus buying new electronic components. And I have used Panamax since 2004.

Q
Does this change the standby pass through feature of a receiver? The surge protector I use now, the main bank controls the power to the other components. In my case the main is my tv, if the tv is not on I cannot turn on any of the other components.
bryan  Jan 25, 2017
1 answer
A
I have all my components powered through the Panamax MR4000 including a Sony STR-DN1040 AVR. The AVR goes into standby mode with no issue. My Sony TV is connected to my AVR via an ARC HDMI line. When I hit the TV button on the Verizon remote it turns both TV and AVR on/off simultaneously. MR4000 doesn't have any influence on that part of the equation.
john  Jan 25, 2017
Q
Given that Panamax only supports it's warranty when the item is sold by an authorized retailer, is Crutchfield on that list ? i.e., will the warranty be honored ?
morgan  Jan 23, 2017

A
Thanks for your question. Absolutely, Crutchfield is an authorized retailer of pretty much everything they sell, including Panamax. Your product includes free lifetime technical support as well, so any issues whatsoever, just let us know.
