Our take on the Samsung UN50JS7000

One of the key differences between Samsung's top-performing SUHD models and their other 4K TVs is the innovative color technology in the SUHD sets. Samsung's much more affordable 50" UN50JS7000 employs that same cutting-edge color technology. In fact, this is Samsung's best-performing flat-screen 50" TV.

Samsung's impressive SUHD color tech is now more affordable

Samsung SUHD

One of the key differences between Samsung's top-performing SUHD models and their other 4K TVs is the innovative color technology in the SUHD sets. Samsung's much more affordable 50" UN50JS7000 employs that same cutting-edge color technology. In fact, this is Samsung's best-performing flat-screen 50" TV.

Nanocrystal technology expands TV color range

An LCD TV's color range depends on the quality of the light produced by its backlight. In recent years, backlights shifted from fluorescent to LEDs, which offer purer light and slightly better color. Now LEDs are getting a major upgrade.

The UN50JS7000 features breakthrough backlight technology. Where conventional LED backlights produce white light, this new design starts with LEDs that produce blue light. This light then shines through a film layer containing billions of red and green nanocrystals, also known as "quantum dots." The resulting high-purity colored light expands the TV's color range by 20%, providing richer, more intense hues. An added bonus is a big boost in the TV's light efficiency to deliver a brighter picture.

Samsung gives you the most 4K viewing options

Right now, the best option for watching 4K content is web streaming. The UN50JS7000 includes “HEVC” decoding, so it can display the streamed 4K movies and TV series available from Netflix® and Amazon Instant Video with no additional gear needed. All of the set's HDMI inputs support HDCP 2.2 copy protection, which means you'll be able to enjoy 4K sources like Ultra HD Blu-ray movies when they arrive in early 2016.

True 4K content will continue to be scarce for a while, but that won't keep you from enjoying a remarkable picture. Samsung made 4K upconversion a top priority as they developed the video processing circuitry for the UN50JS7000. Their UHD Upscaling automatically upconverts any signal to match the screen's 4K resolution. All of your current video sources — Blu-ray player, cable or satellite TV box, game console — will look better than ever.

A Smart TV that's smarter than most

Tizen user interface

Samsung's Smart Hub offers easy navigation and quick access from a single screen.

This TV's brain is a speedy quad-core processor that lets you browse the web without having to interrupt what you're watching. Besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Samsung's on-board selection of streaming video and music apps is second to none.

The AllShare™ Play feature lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or Tab, you can share movies, photos, and music via the UN50JS7000. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like "toss" photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.

Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone can be even cooler. Just download Samsung's Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the UN50JS7000's screen on your Galaxy phone or Tab. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind.

I purchased this `SUHD 4k tv 2 months ago and after 3 months of reviewing all sorts of 4k t.v.'s i decided on this tv because of the price and the top reviews from various top notch review websites. As far as the different settings i decided to watch this t.v.using factory settings.I have had nothing but success whereas i did'nt have to change any settings to achieve the desired settings.Straight out of the box this tv has performed Flawlessly and to think if i tweak the settings that the tv could be even better just blows my mind.I recommend this tv to anyone especially for the 4k newby's.Don't be afraid just buy it and i promise you will not be disappointed!!!

Pros: There are many.

Cons: There are none.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I matched this 4K TV to the Samsung K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player. This TV will produce a great 4K picture for the price when playing the new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies from the Samsung K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player. So far i have watched Sicario and The Revenant in this new format and was very impressed with the 4K quality. The other features that work well are the tv's built-in apps. The 4k upscaling works well with the apps. The downside is the tv's web browser. Even with Cat7 ethernet, you cannot select 2160 in the resolution option box because the picture will freeze. If you select 1440P the video will play without freezing.

Pros: Will display an awesome 4k picture when matched to the Samsung K8500 Blu-ray player and playing the new 4k ultra hd blu-ray movies.

Cons: The built-in web browser cannot handle 2160 as a resolution option as it will freeze.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I previously owned a Sony XBR, and decided it was time to upgrade. After talking with knowledgeable friends, and the Crutchfield Team, I decided on the Samsung. From the time the set was turned on, the picture quality is amazing, crisp, clear, all with an older HDMI cable, and HD cable box. The Smart interaction works great, even though, my home wireless router is old and in a not great area of my home. When I plugged in a BluRay disc, all I can say is WOW !

Pros: Samsung SUHD TV.

Cons: NONE

I wanted a bigger TV for my bedroom and came across this samsung for a great price. A week later, I was setting it up. Installation took minutes and before long I was watching TV. Great picture and great sound even without a speaker bar. Very happy with my decision.

Pros: Easy to set up, great picture and sound.

Cons: None so far.

This was easy to set up, price was great, great picture. 4 stars is for the sound. Bought a sound bar and that made the sound what it should be.

Pros: easy set up, great picture

Cons: sound, and some of Samsung's instructions

Wonderful picture and maybe even better than my Panasonic Viera plasma

Mark from stillwater, OK on 2/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price point I cannot imagine a better picture. I was thoroughly impressed once I got it calibrated the way I wanted. It took a little time to tweak it, so be prepared to take your time adjusting it. I tried some other calibration settings that were on the internet but didn't like them at all. So do it yourself. I have a 65 inch Panasonic Viera plasma HDTV and it has the best picture I have ever seen but this 4K HDTV is close. Samsung is quality for sure in the 4K arena. If you want a dazzling picture and a lot of options for tweaking the picture to your liking this HDTV will meet your expectations. This was a secondary room TV for us so I did not want to spend more than $800 but was pleasantly surprised for what we got for the money.

Pros: Great price point Fantastic picture Multiple options for picture adjustment Good picture even in a bright room

Cons: Motion judder is still a problem even with the highest setting so watching sports is not as enjoyable as I would like. Blacks are not near as good as a plasma but maybe the higher priced 4K have this.

Recommend. Fantastic picture, great sound, easy set-up and operation. Recommend except for one issue: base is stationary and does not swivel. I am using in a location where I cant attach it to the wall. Having to physically adjust the angle of the TV by picking it up and turning it - is an unnecessary inconvenience.

Pros: Fantastic picture, great sound, easy set-up and operation.

Cons: one issue: base is stationary and does not swivel. I am using in a location where I cant attach it to the wall. Having to physically adjust the angle of the TV by picking it up and turning it - is an unnecessary inconvenience.

much better than one might expect

critical from Western New York on 12/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Image quality is far better than I expected. I have an eye for detail and the image is very satisfying. I paired this with a Samsung BD-J7500 Smart blu ray player with UHD up-scaling. This pairing really brings Blu-Rays to a more rewarding visual experience compared to a player that lack the up-scaling capability. I am using this to watch over the air tv and one can easily see a noticeable difference in stations the offer a 720 to a 1080 signal. I will be keeping my eye on the 7000 series or higher for my future needs as I replace other screens.

Pros: Having 4 hdmi is very handy and component in for legacy equipment is also nice.

Cons: not a con exactly - I am using a audio amplifier and large speakers so I really can not comment much on the internal speakers at the moment. A brief listen showed them to be competent for most purposes.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tv died after 30 seconds, was going through the setup process when tv shut off and failed to turn back on and went into this weird, on/off cycle. I was told it was basicly from the failure of the power control board. Got a replacement sent out right away. All said and done, Crutchfield support was very helpful and understanding of the problem. My replacement works like it should! It's an awesome 4k tv for the price. Love watching breaking bad in 4k.

Pros: 4k looks great Great deal Multiple HDMI ports Very universal, works with alot of my devices.

Cons: Dark scenes with black are purple sometimes Not the best tv for dark scenes.

love it

Straightforward setup and install. Plenty of setup options if you know how to use them to your benefit. The color depth and realism is amazing. Cable 1080i and 4K content far exceeds my previous Samsung JN6450.

Pros: 1080I and 4K content, setup options, Price.

Cons: Should have bought it back in July.

Dissapointed with this Samsung TV

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I Struggled with going to the 4K TV thinking it would be a lot of problems. First, started the process with Crutchfield telling me the Refresh rate does not matter on these 4K TV's. Well, the refresh rate does matter and I can not watch my sports and action shows without seeing the blurring. I did return two of these TV's for remote issue and for the blurriness. And, the second TV, I had to pay a fee to return when this TV is not performing to what I was sold.

Pros: Picture is very good when not a Action Scene. Remote is setup good.

Cons: Refresh Rate had major issues. I have returned for a 8500 smaller 48" model. DIRECTV function was a problem to setup and is very slow.

Very nice TV overall - easy set-up, nice interconnect features to WIFI, beautiful display and easy integration with existing components.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First let me say this is an awesome television. The color and picture quality are 5 star! The one thing I was not impressed with was the DIRECTV ready feature. This is deceptive because they are not true DIRCETV ready. Additional equipment is needed to use the DIRECTV and nowhere is that stated in the listing. I ended up using my wireless GENIE from DIRECTV to complete the installation. The initial set-up was quite easy. Had the stand on and initial set up run in 10 minutes. Had an issue with the volume control on the remote. Called Crutchfield and quickly resolved that problem. Would highly recommend this TV if you want great quality picture at a value price point!

This Samsung SUHD is everything I had hoped for and more! I couldn't be happier. I especially appreciate the role Crutchfield played in my selection. With your expert help, this product is right on the money!

Pros: This is my first 4K set. I'm still fixated on what that has brought to my viewing. Let's just say that beyond that I haven't found anything wrong. (and I don't expect to)

SUHD series TV: Samsung's new 2015 SUHD series LED-LCD TVs surpass the limitations of previous displays, delivering superior picture quality with stunning contrast, striking brightness and spectacular color. Utilizing Samsung's proprietary, eco-friendly nano-crystal technology and an Ultra-Clear LCD panel, Samsung SUHD TVs demonstrate ground-breaking advances in contrast, brightness, color reproduction, and detail to deliver an overall superior picture quality experience.

  • Nano-Crystal Technology: This SUHD series LED-LCD TV heralds Samsung's next generation of nano-crystal technology with a Quantum-dot enhancement film (QDEF) between the TV's edge-lit LED backlight and its LCD panel. This film is saturated with tons of nano-crystal semiconductors that have been engineered to glow in very precise shades of red and green when the TV's pure blue LEDs emit light onto them. These nano-crystals are 50,000x smaller than the width of a human hair for stunning brightness, color, and contrast accuracy. Each nano-crystal semiconductor transmits different colors of light depending on their size to produce the highest color purity and light efficiency available today. This technology produces a wide range of more accurate colors, providing viewers with 64x more color expression than conventional TVs.
  • Ultra-Clear LCD Panel: Its Ultra-Clear LCD Panel also absorbs ambient light better, reduces reflections and lets the picture come to life. It displays deeper blacks and enhanced contrast for crystal clarity and reduces glare, so you can see clearly and enjoy more detail.

UHD Dimming w/ Contrast Enhancer: UHD Dimming precisely scans an incredible amount of zones across the entire image and adjusts brightness to deliver deeper darks and brighter whites. The TV's Contrast Enhancer lets you experience a greater sense of depth with optimized contrast across multiple zones of the screen.

Auto Motion 120: The Samsung SUHD TV combines its 60Hz native panel refresh rate with  Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion 120 image processing technology. Auto Motion 120 helps to remove blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. Auto Motion 120 reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Auto Motion 120 can be set to Clear, Standard, Smooth, Custom, or Off.

Ultra-HD 4K Resolution: The Samsung SUHD series LED-LCD TV has a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution; regardless of input signal. 4K provides 4x higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition TVs, ensuring a truly immersive experience for all your favorite movies and TV shows.

  • HEVC/VP9 Decoder: The SUHD TV even offers "HEVC/H.265 & VP9" decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K content from online movie & TV show providers (like Netflix, Amazon, & YouTube).
  • UHD Upscaling: UHD Upscaling delivers the complete Ultra-HD picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or full-HD content to Ultra-HD-level picture quality.

Video Inputs: The Samsung SUHD series LED-LCD TV offers Ultra-HD, high-definition, and standard definition video inputs.

  • HDMI 2.0: The Samsung UHD TV features four HDMI 2.0 inputs to connect to your Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, or AV receiver. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The television's HDMI inputs will accept 3,840 x 2,160 (24/60Hz), 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.
    • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by all of the TV's HDMI inputs; HDCP is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with 4K Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All four HDMI inputs will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of 4K video; however only the HDMI 1 inputs will support 60 fps in 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 mode. 4:2:2 (30fps) and 4:2:0 (60fps) are supported by all HDMI inputs. With 4:4:4 color, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. You must enable 4:4:4 & 4:2:2 color subsampling by turning on the "UHD Color" setting within the TV's on-screen menu.
  • Analog: The Samsung LED-LCD TV features a single component video input which will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals. The component video input can also be used as a composite video input (480i only).
Note: The TV feature a single RF-type coaxial input for connecting an external indoor/outdoor antenna. The unit has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals (up to 1080i).

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Update: Samsung has issued a firmware update that will enable its 2015 SUHD TVs to support HDMI 2.0a and display a broader library of High Dynamic Range (HDR) content from external devices (such as Ultra-HD Blu-ray players). HDR delivers a much higher level of contrast between light and dark to produce an image that is more realistic and closer to what the content creator imagined.

Note: The HDR firmware update is now available via the SUHD TV's network & internet connection.

HDMI (MHL) Port: The HDMI 2 port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 2 (MHL) port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Samsung TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI e port. To find MHL-certified devices, go to

Multi-Link Screens: The Samsung SUHD LED-LCD TV supports multi-screen view through Quad Screen or PIP.

  • Quad Screen: Using Quad Screen, you can view four independent screens at once through this TV. You'll be able to enjoy live TV, video clips, and the web all at once. For example; you can watch your favorite golf tournament on one screen and search the web for current standings on another. Then watch a video tutorial to master your swing while navigating your Smart TV panel on the fourth screen. Using Quad Screen requires an Internet connection. You can listen to audio from one of the split-screens through the TVs speakers and audio from another split-screen through a pair of Bluetooth-paired headphones (sold separately). Certain TV features and apps may not be supported by Multi-Link Screen.
  • PIP (Picture-in-Picture): You can watch the TV's tuner and one external video source (component/HDMI) simultaneously). The component/HDMI source will be displayed as the main picture, while the TV channel will be displayed in a sub-screen, while which can be moved to each corner of the television's screen. You can switch the audio between the main screen and sub-screen.

Picture Control: You can make the following adjustments for an optimum picture.

  • Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following screen sizes - 16:9 (16:9 widescreen format), 4:3 (4:3 standard format), Zoom (magnifies 16:9 pictures vertically), or Custom (magnifies or shrink 16:9 pictures vertically and/or horizontally). The Picture size is fixed for video and still images displayed natively in 3840 x 2160 (4K).
  • Picture Modes: Picture Modes apply preset adjustments to the picture. Select from Dynamic( increases the brightness of the screen), Standard( suitable for a normal environment), Natural (useful for reducing eye strain), or Movie (darkens the screen and reduces glare), or Entertain (sharpens images for a more dynamic viewing experience; only available when connected to a computer).
  • Manual Picture Settings: The TV has several options for manually adjusting the picture quality. Manually adjust Backlight (adjusts the brightness of the LED backlight), Contrast (increases or decreases the contrast between dark and light areas of the picture), Brightness (adjusts the brightness level of the picture) Sharpness (sharpens or dulls the edges of objects), Color (adjusts the color saturation of the picture), and Tint (adjusts the amount of green and red in a picture).
  • Advanced Picture Settings: The TV also offers more advanced picture adjustments for fine tuning. Fine tune the Dynamic Contrast (adjusts the screen contrast for optimal contrast), Black Tone (adjusts the black level on the screen to adjust the screen depth), Flesh Tone (adjusts the amount of red in skin tones), RGB (displays the Red/Green/Blue color for making find adjustments to the hue and saturation), Color Space (adjusts the range of colors available to create the image), White Balance (adjusts the color temperature for more natural picture colors), and Gamma (adjusts the primary color red/green/blue intensity).

You can select between "Wall-Mount" or "Stand" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement. You can also calibrate the TV for optimal sound quality based on your hearing capabilities and the ambient conditions.

Audio Extras: The Samsung TV offers a variety of audio adjustments to meet your listening needs.

  • Auto Volume: Auto Volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels. The Auto Volume feature can be set to Normal, Night or Off.
  • Audio Delay: The Audio Delay function corrects audio/video mismatch, when watching TV or video, and listening to a digital audio output using an external device such as an AV receiver. You can adjust the audio delay from 0ms to 250 ms.
  • Picture Off: You can turn the television's screen off and still listen to audio.

Audio Outputs: The Samsung SUHD TV provides an analog and digital audio output.

  • Digital Audio (Dolby Digital/DTS): The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, HDMI inputs, and USB ports on the LED-LCD TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo or a matrixed 5.1ch signal (DTS Neo 2:5) from sources connected to the TV via RCA.
  • Analog Audio: The television features a 3.5mm (minijack) audio output for connecting the television to an analog 2-channel receiver. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your soundbar speaker or AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminals will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 3 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, HDMI inputs, network connection, and USB ports can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. Analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.

Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 3 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.
