Samsung's OLED TV — state-of-the-art meets industrial art

Samsung KN55S9C

Samsung's 55" KN55S9C OLED TV is a beautiful blend of technology and art. The ultra-thin, gently curved panel and elegantly minimalist frame are the first clues to this TV's revolutionary nature. OLED is a truly new screen technology — it's not based on LCD or plasma, and has major advantages over both. Even as other screen innovations like 4K are beginning to appear, nothing else matches the "wow" factor of OLED. And to make sure you get the maximum performance from this TV, Samsung includes a free visit from a technician to calibrate the TV and make sure the settings and setup are optimized for your room.

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, and it's the organic part that makes this technology a real game-changer. Traditional light emitting diodes have served as backlights in LED-LCD TVs for years, shining through a screen made up of LCD pixels. But OLED screens actually use an organic material that glows when it's activated by an electric current. The screen's pixel layer is made of this self-illuminating carbon-based material — each pixel produces its own light and color, and can be independently switched on and off, so there's no need for a backlight with all its limitations.

With fewer layers than an LED-LCD screen, OLED drastically reduces the thickness and weight of the TV. And because there are fewer layers between your eyes and the screen's pixels, OLED images grab you with their effortless color, clarity, and immediacy.

A new benchmark for TV picture quality

Samsung has been putting beautiful 5" OLED screens on its Galaxy S4 smartphone for a while, but the KN55S9C is the company's first OLED TV screen sized for a living room. The reason Samsung has devoted so much time and money developing OLED is that it's about as close as you can get to the perfect screen technology. An OLED screen is thinner, lighter, and more energy-efficient than an LED-LCD screen. And it's similar to plasma in that each pixel creates its own light and color. But where plasma pixels maintain a tiny amount of illumination even when displaying "black," to be able to quickly ramp up to full illumination, OLED pixels can switch off completely, producing absolute black. That's an important difference, because it means the KN55S9C is capable of virtually infinite picture contrast.

Samsung's "Real OLED" technology is an advanced type of OLED display that uses red, green, and blue sub-pixels — no color filters. In that way it's similar to plasma, and like plasma, OLED images provide excellent contrast and color even for viewers seated off to the sides.

Samsung's Multi View feature

Multi View lets two people watch two different shows at the same time. Special 3D glasses are included, with built-in headphones for independent listening.

Two people can watch different shows on the same screen at the same time!

The OLED screen combines with Samsung's active 3D technology to produce 3D images of extraordinary beauty. But there's more. The KN55S9C puts an end to program choice arguments through the magic of Samsung's Multi View technology. By wearing the special supplied 3D glasses, you and a friend can watch two separate shows on the same screen — and you'll both enjoy full 1080p video and clear sound. Multi View displays two images on-screen simultaneously, with each video stream being filtered out by one pair of the glasses. Headphones built into the glasses frames supply the sound. Because Samsung uses active 3D technology, each viewer sees a full 1080p picture with no loss in resolution. Two pairs of the Multi View 3D glasses are included.

Samsung One Connect Box

The KN55S9C includes Samsung's One Connect Box, which has inputs for your video components. A single cable connects the box to the TV, for a clean, uncluttered look.

One smart solution for easy hookup and upgradability

Instead of connecting your Blu-ray player, cable box, and other sources to the TV itself, you connect them to Samsung's One Connect switching hub, which is included with the KN55S9C. It has four HDMI inputs, two USB ports, an Ethernet port, and an antenna jack. A single cable connects this box to the TV, for a clean, uncluttered look.

The One Connect box incorporates Samsung's Smart Evolution technology, which provides a way to let you upgrade the TV's "brain" — its main processor, graphics processor, and memory — to support future formats and features as they become available.

Beauty on the outside, brainiac on the inside

A quad-core processor makes the KN55S9C one of Samsung's smartest Smart TVs yet. Besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Along with built-in apps for services like Netflix®, Hulu Plus™, and YouTube™, you can download new ones from Samsung's large selection of apps. There's a built-in camera hidden in the top of the TV's frame that you can use with video calling apps like Skype™. The camera is disabled when not in use.

Samsung's Galaxy phones and tablets add handheld viewing and control

Samsung's AllShare™ Play lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you have a Galaxy S3 or newer smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the KN55S9C. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like "toss" photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.

Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the KN55S9C's screen on your Galaxy S3 phone or tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind.

The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo or a matrixed 5.1ch signal (DTS Neo 2.5) from sources connected to the TV via HDMI or RCA.
  • Analog Audio: The television features a 3.5mm (minijack) audio output for connecting the television to an analog 2-channel receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminals will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB port can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.

Note:  Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 3 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

WiFi Direct: When using WiFi Direct, you can connect directly with other devices without using a wireless router. You'll be able to wirelessly transfer personal content (such as photos & videos) to the Samsung OLED TV without connecting to your home network. WiFi Direct completely bypasses your WiFi access point/router, so it's easy to set up. Streaming of copy-protected content and other certain formats are not supported.

AllShare/DLNA Certified: The Samsung OLED TV's AllShare function, along with its DLNA Certification allow you to watch videos (Divx/AVI/H.264/MPEG/MKV/MOV/WMV), photos (JPEG/PNG/BMP/MPO), and listen to music (MP3/WMA/AAC/FLAC/OGG) saved on your Windows PC (or other DLNA Certified media server) through the TV via its Ethernet (LAN) port or built-in WiFi (wireless). This eliminates the need to copy your photo, video, and music files to a separate USB storage device.

Note: Windows PCs with XP and Vista installed require Samsung's PC Share Manager software, which can be downloaded for free at www.samsung.com. Not compatible with older Windows OS versions and Mac.

Screen Mirroring: This Screen Mirroring function lets you view the screen of your WiFi-enabled Samsung Android smart phone or tablet (with support for AllShare Cast) on the Samsung OLED TV.

You can even activate a virtual on-screen remote controller (w/ numeric keypad, playback controls, and shortcut menu) on the TV which can be operated through the remote's touchpad. It also has a built-in microphone that you can use to give the Samsung TV voice commands. In addition, the remote can be programmed to control satellite/cable boxes, Blu-ray players, and home theaters from other manufactures using the TV's setup menu and the included IR blaster. You can turn on the remote's backlight function for a brief moment with a press of a button.

Smart Interaction: The Samsung OLED TV offers Smart Interaction with voice & motion control, as well as face recognition through its built-in camera and integrated microphone. The camera's viewing angle is adjustable. Using the TV's Smart Interaction, you can access and control menu options and functions using speech, hand gestures, and face recognition.

  • Voice Control: Using the TV's built-in microphone or the microphone on the included Smart Touch Remote and the voice control function of the TV, your voice is all you need to turn on the Samsung television, navigate menus, and get to your favorite Smart TV content. You can use only your voice to switch the channel, adjust the volume level, and launch online apps while focusing on the TV screen, which removes the need for the conventional remote control. The Smart Touch Remote's mic even lets you use "natural language" to search for content on the TV, your network, and online apps. To use Voice Control, you must pronounce words and phrases clearly and correctly in the language (English/French/Spanish) you selected. The Voice Control function can be affected by unclear pronunciation, voice level, or surrounding noise. • Motion Control: Thanks to the television's built-in camera and motion control function, a simple hand gesture is all it takes to access your favorite movies, sports, apps, and other Smart TV content. Use a specific hand motions to switch the channel or adjust the volume level, as well as to move the mouse pointer to a desired position while surfing online content from the Smart Hub. Simply use your hand to control TV functions by swiping (moving your hand left or right) to navigate and grabbing (closing your hand or making a fist) to select. The motion control function can be affected by user's location, motion posture, or ambient brightness conditions. The built-in camera's angle is adjustable to compensate for the television's mounting height (high on wall or low on stand). Make sure the palm of your hand is open, flat, and facing the TV when making "swiping" movements (not too fast or too slow). If your hand moves outside of the camera's view, motion control will be deactivated. Your room should be well lit room (50-500 Lux) with the light illuminating you. Use the TV's gesture control environment test for best performance.
  • Face Recognition: The built-in camera also recognizes your face and logs you in to your profile, giving you instant access to your favorite apps, your personal Skype address book, and more. In order for Face Recognition to function, the TV's built-in camera will take a snapshot of your face and a thumbnail image of your face will be stored in the TV for logging-in purposes. The TV can store up to five face recognition profiles.
Note: Samsung recommends using the Voice Control, Motion Control, and Face Recognition functions within approximately 4.9'-13.1' of the TV. The motion control's range may differ depending on the angle of camera or other conditions. Voice Control performance levels will vary based on the language spoken. Some TV and menu functions will require the use of the included IR remote control.

Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC): This TV is enabled with Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC); a feature that makes it possible to control Samsung external devices connected to the TV with ease. With Anynet+, you can use the TV remote control to operate all your compatible Samsung devices that are connected to the TV via HDMI. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got it about 3 weeks ago from Crutchfield. They are the only store who had in stock In USA. Just awesome !!! I cant get off watching this amazing TV. The picture is absolutely perfect. The 3D is as good as watching in an IMAX theater. I have hooked it up to Onkyo Home theater .Sounds great. I also bought two additional Active 3D glasses for about $20 each so that my entire family can watch 3D at the same time. I have watched Tin Tin, Hobbit, IMAX documentaries, Prometheus and Epic on 3D. Just amazing. I will not step in a movie theater again!!! Yesterday we watched a 1928 silent movie in black and white. TV cannot get better than this. I have not yet tied the Multiview yet. Highly recommend it!!! Set up was simple. I am still trying to program my Logitech Universal remote but they have not updated new Samsung TV yet. Crutchfield tech support are quick to respond and very helpful. My only gripe is that it does not fit my recessed space in living room for the TV. The speakers project out a bit. I can live with that. I am still trying to figure out the motion control.

The Best TV Ever

Written By Marty S, New York, NY on Tuesday, December 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little apprehensive about spending this amount of money for a TV. but I decided to go for it anyway. It was the best decision that I have ever made. As soon as I hooked it up I knew that I was in for something special. The color is the best I have ever seen and the 3D is spectacular. I really love this TV. If you have the money go for it and by the way I got a 3 year financing agreement without any interest. So I won all around.
Pros:
Great 3D, Easy setup with a Yamaha receiver and HDMI cables.Fantastic picture unequalled by any other TV
Cons:
