Now that Ultra High Definition has established itself as the next TV standard, TV makers are giving us more models to choose from. Samsung's sleek 55" UN55HU8550 will appeal to those who prefer a true flat screen to the new curved-screen designs. Naturally, you get the super-sharp 3840 x 2160-pixel picture detail that makes 4K images look so stunning.
Samsung made sure that this set's video processing and connections are as state-of-the-art as the screen. The UN55HU8550 is one of the first Ultra HD TVs to include “HEVC” decoding, which means it can display 4K Netflix® content with no additional gear needed. And this TV will be ready for what's coming further in the future, thanks to Samsung's Smart Evolution feature, which provides a goof-proof way to upgrade the TV's inputs, outputs, and processing brains. Think of it as an insurance policy that will keep UN55HU8550 owners up to date on Ultra HD format standards as they evolve.
Samsung's UHD Video Pack media player.
Samsung's UHD Video Pack (sold separately) lets you instantly make the most of your Samsung Ultra HD TV. Only a little bigger than a smartphone, this 1-terabyte hard drive comes pre-loaded with several full-length movies and nature documentaries, all in spectacular full 4K resolution. Simply connect it to the TV using the supplied USB cable and start enjoying the best picture you've ever seen.
True 4K content will continue to be scarce for a while, but that won't keep you from enjoying a remarkable picture. Samsung made 4K upconversion a top priority as they developed the video processing circuitry for the UN55HU8550. Their UHD Upscaling automatically upconverts any signal to match the screen's 4K resolution. All of your current video sources — Blu-ray player, cable or satellite TV box, game console — will look better than ever.
The Quad Screen feature divides this TV into four screens. Watch a golf tournament on one screen while searching the web for current standings on another. Then watch a video tutorial to master your swing while navigating your Smart TV panel on the fourth screen.
Tablets and smartphones can run circles around many older Smart TVs, but they can't do all the tricks that the UN55HU8550 can. Samsung's speedy quad core processor supports a new Multi-Link feature, which lets you place live TV side-by-side with other apps, like YouTube™ or a web browser — you can browse the web without having to interrupt what you're watching.
Besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Along with built-in apps for services like Netflix®, Hulu Plus™, and YouTube™, you can download new ones from Samsung's large selection of apps.
Samsung's AllShare™ Play lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you have a Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the UN55HU8550. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like "toss" photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.
Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the UN55HU8550's screen on your Galaxy S3 phone or tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind. Think of it as a whole-house TV system you can hold in your hand.
Movie theaters have switched to 4K projectors in recent years, and now you can enjoy amazing 4K picture quality at home. Ultra HD TVs with 4K resolution offer four times the detail of 1080p HDTVs. Some major TV makers offer media players so you can download and watch true 4K content for the best possible picture. Netflix® is already streaming some of their content in 4K, and other services plan to offer 4K video later this year.
So far, the Samsung UN55HU8550 55" 4K Ultra High Definition TV is living up to expectations. Quality of product is as described by Crutchfield. Cannot comment on audio portion of TV - mine is hooked up to an Onkyo receiver and Difinitive Technology speakers (Mythos STS system).
This TV replaced a top-of-the-line 46" Sony Bravia LCD (6 years old) that developed a bad panel. Sony does not stand behind their products - which is why I switched to Samsung.
This was my first buying experience with Crutchfield - very smooth and professional.
Pros: Great video quality, thin profile.
Cons: Short power cord.
Great picture! The picture, although more clear, particularly closeup, is not quite as realistic as the plasma set it replaced. This set at 55" replaced a 50" set. Had I known how close you can sit to this set I would have gone for 60".
Pros: Clear and crisp. Thin profile. Easy to mount on the wall. Could easily have taken a larger screen. Purchased with a sound bar. The sound bar (Sonos) improves the sound somewhat but particularly so at higher levels. (More on the Sonos in another review).
Cons: Difficult to learn all the ways to use the remote controls. The smaller palm sized control with the voice activation and light pointer is interesting. Get back to me in a couple of months and I'll let you know whether I've mastered it or not. Haven't yet figured out how to upgrade the system as I am told I can by a message on the screen. The color is not as rich as reproduced on a plasma screen. I suspect this has to do with less black definition. I'll likely soon forget the plasma picture.
The quickest open and start viewing experience yet! The picture is phenomenal, with bright detailed non blur action. One call to my Crutchfield Advisor and the optical return from the TV, and BAM best sound yet. Very happy!
Pros: Ease of start up and fantastic picture. The the tight dark frame is better looking than expected. This TV was researched by me for 3 months. Total winner.
Cons: none yet
First and foremost, shipping was quick I ordered this TV, and soundbar I received in 3 working days. Now to the good stuff. If b you want to emurce yourself in stunning visual stimulation, then this TV brings it. Everytime I turn Samsung on I marvel at crisp lifelike picture that is before me. If your looking to step into thee world of 4k Ultra HD this TV is where it is at. My dog even watches this TV if you believe that. I was wanted to see how this TV brought 1968 Star Trek. I actually saw duck tape on the floor of the set. Stuff you could see the detail of and fuzz on the actors shirts. I used Netflix and streaming the show this TV had no problems.
Pros: Crisp picture Multi display for those who like to multi task Remote is the coolest thing: like having a laser pointer for the TV. Second remote gives you access like a standard remote. Upscale picture on reg TV. This is where the money is. Unbelievable picture, night and day difference on every channel. Samsung Media HD gives you a start on 4k HD movies and Documentries. Easy to navigate and setup. Wireless sound is great to have keeps it clean and no wires for sound bar.
Cons: IR Extender needs to be longer for wall mounted TVs. Refresh rate on reg TV is sometimes noticable. 45 degree plug is something to be less desired for recessed power boxes.
We had been looking to replace a small, Vizio HDTV for several years. Every year, Black Friday would roll around, but we wouldn't end up pulling the trigger. I was always worried about spending too much on tech that would be a fraction of the price a year later. This year, we figured it was a good time to jump into 4K which will be leading edge for sometime. I looked at nearly every TV in this class in person before setting on the Samsung. This TV stood out due to amazing image quality and a boatload of features.
Firstly, the image quality on this TV is amazing. A lot of TV's at this level have an over sharpened appearance, especially when viewed up close. This results in contrasty, jagged artifacts in the image. I think manufacturers do this to increase perceived sharpness at viewing distance, but to me it makes things look pixellated. This is one of the few TV's a saw that boast sharp details coupled with smooth tones. The result is a picture that appears natural and rich. The most comparable picture was LG's OLED TV (much more expensive than this).
Samsung has done a nice job packing this TV with SmartTV features. I really enjoy using Netflix directly on the set instead of via Apple TV. The 4K streaming on Netflix is stunning. I've looked at 1080p streaming via Apple TV against the 4K streaming, and you really can see the difference. The remote works well and the TV connects seamlessly with my receiver.
Pros: Gorgeous image quality, great set of apps and connected features, innovative "pointer-style" remote, very nice AutoMotion smoothing for fast action and games, very nice industrial design
Cons: The ARC supports 5.1 output for media sourced via apps on the TV (Netflix, etc.), but only stereo output for signals coming in from HDMI ports. As a result, you can't use the TV to switch sources if you are looking for 5.1 output.
I'd recommend this Samsung to anyone
Pros: Picture is clean and bright
Cons: Install was a bit expensive since I had to move electric and cable wires around.
Superb tv with great sound. Th u s tv makes you watch TV as its stunning picture quality is a delight to your eyes. Look no more and get this tv...you will not regret it.
Set up was easy and compared to my older TV the picture is amazing. I really like the 55" size and because it is the 55" it has the Samsung panel.
Pros: Blacks are black and whites are white. Backlight feature is great.
Cons: Crutchfield does not send a bill of sale which I needed for another years warranty with my credit card company. I was originally overcharged I was originally overcharged $300 which was corrected the next day but now the email sent from Crutchfield shows one figure and my credit card shows another figure. Hopefully I'll be able to get this straightened out.
My last T.V. was a Samsung 40" LED and was very satisfied. After visiting multiple big name stores locally and comparing side-by-side different brands, models, prices and sizes I decided on this one. Then I got on line at all the popular sites and did the same. Crutchfield was who I decided to make my purchase with. I have purchased only car audio from them before but was completely satisfied. Their Tech Support I have called in the past is great, quick shipping and on-line product information and resources is also very good. This T.V. has a picture better than I realized it would. Set-up was a snap and took only minutes before it was ready to go, and I am not that "savvy" when it comes to this stuff. I have only had it a short time so I am still discovering all of it's many benefits and capabilities. I would recommend Crutchfield to anyone. I was very apprehensive about having something this large and fragile delivered to my door this close to Christmas but it was in perfect condition when it arrived.
Pros: I am satisfied with almost everything. Easy setup, great picture, easy to use. Price before black Friday was as cheep as big box stores anywhere on black Friday. This t.v. up-converts the picture and looks amazing
Cons: Cable input/output location. I would prefer another fiber optic out port
Just got it today good picture right out of the box,(did a little tweaking ) easy to set up remotes are a little hard to get used too.but over all I think it's well worth the money.watched a 4k movie on Netflix, looked GREAT!
Pros: Great picture good sound easy setup
The picture is amazing when watching 4k programming. The setup is easy and all the connections are well laid out.
Pros: Picture Quality Price Features
Cons: If the TV is not wall mounted and you have the Vizio sound bar ,it will block the bottom of the TV and IR. Had to add an IR extender and add a base to lift the TV to fix the issue
We are finishing the basement and got this ahead of time due to the sale. After weeks of research and going into stores to look at the TVs I was interested in, this was the winner. It's as good or better as the Sony we bought a couple years ago (was the best out there at the time). Comparing this Samsung to the Sony we have, and all other TVs out there today, I truly believe the Samsung 8550 series has the best looking picture. I buy from Crutchfield due to their awesome customer service should I ever need it (which isn't often, but great when I do).
Of course we set it up and are using it in the bedroom before the basement is done. My thoughts so far:
The stand is very sturdy (will be mounted eventually). The TV is nice and thin with a well built feel to it. After tweaking the settings a bit, the picture is nice an clear and vibrant, pretty close to true color as well. I'm not a fan of motion blur, so it gets turned off immediately. Not having the chance to test out a true 4K source, I'm looking forward to it just based on the upscaling ability. Yes, it has been that good. The only issue so far is when the TV is turning on, you definitely see some light bleed, but that's to be expected to some degree since it is an edge lit TV. You don't notice the light bleed in the blacks while a show/movie is playing.
I'm not reviewing the "Smart" features because we have no need for them. We use Netflix through Chromecast (or any other app that uses Chromecast).
Pros: - Sturdy stand - Quality feel - Best picture and upscaling out there - Great value for your money - Nice thin bezels - Comes with four 3D glasses and batteries (not tested yet, not too interested, but cool to have in case) - Gestures to control TV (not tested either, not needed with universal remote we bought)
Cons: - Little light bleed when TV powers on (not noticeable when watching movies) - Smart functions (I'm not into that stuff, just give me a dumb TV and I'll hook up what I want to use and not wait ages for the TV to boot and load an app) - Gestures to control TV (listed in both, I think it's gimmicky and dumb, but others may like it)
The SAMSUNG 55 inch 4K TV has a great pitcher there are plenty of HDMI ports for adding all your av blue ray equipment up has all the apps anyone could ask for and with the one direct feature you will be able to stay up to date with all future up grade when they come out and with Crutchfield support you will have it up and running in know time.
Pros: Great value best pitcher of all the 4 K TVs on the market simple to use remote that runs all your AV and home theater equipment with one wire hookup
Cons: The manual is hard to understand but thanks to Crutchfield's knowledgeable staff set up is a breeze
Out of the box the color rendering was so bad on this TV I probably would have exchanged it for the Sony if it would have been easier to box up. However, after making some adjustments the image is now much better, but still not perfect (most likely due to my lack of skill making these kind of adjustments). On a positive note, the resolution and image sharpness is fantastic.
Pros: -Excellent resolution -Great apps including Amazon Prime, HBO Go, Pandora, and Vtuner -TV design looks very nice
Cons: -Color rendering on factory settings is terrible - Images are washed out and flesh tones are unnatural -Using the HDMI/ARC port requires an angled connector if a low profile wall mount is used -Bitstream option is not avaliable for audio out, hopefully this option will be added in future firmware releases... -ARC is a bit flakey -Manual doesn't describe some of the available audio features such as RF vs. Line, and audio out vs. receiver. It would be nice to know the differences with these mo
This is the best television I have ever seen. Its picture is so clear, the motion so smooth, the colors so realistic, that it is as if you are looking through an open window on the action.
Its screen is flat, which I prefer. Its upconversion to 4K is absolutely uncanny, even on SD content. When you view something in native 4K (like Netflix's "Breaking Bad") the effect on the viewer is as if we are actually there. The (active) 3D is the most realistic I ever saw anywhere, including in high-frame-rate iMax 3D movie theaters. When the screen goes dark in an otherwise darkened room, the TV actually disappears -- the contrast ratio appears infinite. The bezel is so thin that the picture seems to float in air.
I write professionally and, if I may say so, rather well. But I have no words for how highly I recommend this fine product. I have owned it for six months now and the quality of its picture still absolutely startles me every time I turn the thing on.
Please note that this review does not address the quality of the set's audio speakers. I have never used them, instead pumping the sound directly through my high-end 7.2 home theater receiver. If built-in sound quality is a concern to you, you must look elsewhere for comment. I'm not saying it is deficient in any way; just that I have never used it.
Pros: Best picture on any TV I ever saw. Smart TV features are comprehensive. More than adequate connectors of all sorts, including wireless via WiFi and Bluetooth. Screen is flat, as God intended. Highly innovative remote control. Intuitive controls.
Cons: A bit costly, but just a bit. Probably the best deal, value-wise, on the market.
When HD first came along, I was a bit skeptical about the real quality of the "new" experience. I was wowed. Now I have been wowed all over again by the Samsung UHD TV experience. It has surpassed all of my expectations! The picture quality is unbelievably sharp and focused--and you feel that you could reach out and touch the real thing! The screen resolution, whether viewing a move actually filmed in 4K or whether watching a regular HD movie or broadcast, is exceptional, thanks to the upconversion features. Bravo, UHD TV and Bravo, Samsung!
Pros: Fantastic viewing experiences, whether broadcast TV, Blu-ray or UHD movie pack.
Cons: A bit frustrating at times when setting up the internet aspects of the UHD TV and the other required components--UHD capable Blu-Ray and UHD capable AV receiver. But well worth the time and effort!
I cannot say enough about the beautiful picture quality on these Samsungs! Even my oldest Blu-Ray titles look fresh and vivid when displayed on this set, and even though their native resolution is only 1080p the TV's onboard scaler does a very competent job of creating a pleasing, rich, gorgeous picture. The guide integration makes finding programming from my cable service so much easier, and scheduling is a breeze as well. The suite of apps is excellent and covers just about any interests an owner may have...sports, 3D, music. I even found myself playing some of the onboard games!
Pros: Beautiful picture and excellent features.
Cons: None so far.
Image quality is sharp and clear, even when upscaling 720p/1080i/1080p content from the cable box. When playing 4k content from the Samsung Movie Pack or using a 4k upscaling blu-ray player it's just amazing. Please keep in mind that to get optimum picture quality and performance you will need to alter the factory default settings, however there are many recommendations and easy to follow guides available.
Pros: Sharp picture Great 4k upscaling
Cons: Samsung TV's, this one included, require a lot of configuration to work well with Denon receivers.
This is undoubtedly the most amazing television I have ever seen, at 720 dpi is still unbelievable / the clarity of 1080 and 4K is stunning. Me and the wife agree the Samsung 4K ultra high DEF 55 inch is nothing short of right on the money $$
Pros: For clarity/ for color this television is tough to beat
This tv just keeps getting better. When I first installed it the tv had a great picture. The sound bar came a few days later. Once I figured it out the remote would control both. Then a fer days later it seemed like it learned how to control the direct tv. Now one remote does it all great integration and great experience
Purchased in Aug 2014. Wanted a 4K Samsung because our 8 yr. old HD set was the same brand and had no problems with it.
VERY thrilled. I don't have trained eye to know the difference between old/new set except that the 4K one allows me to see the background sharply. This I love.
If my Mother knew that I paid $2,000 plus for a TV set she would all most die!
Great clarity. It has more options than I will ever use.
We are over all happy with this television. The picture quality is superb, the set up was easy, and this is by far the best Samsung tv we have ever purchased. We had family over and they are amazed at the quality of the picture and all. There was mentioned that they are in the market for a new tv, and will be considering a Samsung.
Pros: Quality and sharpness of the picture. 3D glasses a plus and fun to watch 3D movies. The smart hub is easy to navigate.
Cons: not much bad I could think of.
By far exceeded expectations. The picture is flawless and the online streaming options are great. Streaming 3D content is amazing along with 3D DVD's
Pros: Great picture, many streaming options
Cons: understanding the 2 remote controls.
This Samsung Ultra High Definition 4K is absolutely wonderful! I have never experienced such brilliant, sharp and ultra clear picture from 720 that comes from my cable provider. Throw in a Blu-Ray disc and 1080 is breath taking. As far as the "smart" TV aspect I haven't explored any of this yet. It sure makes you wonder how much more better 4K definition can possibly be.
Pros: Extremely clear picture absolutely stunning!
Cons: Being that it is already 2.0 HDMI, it doesn't come with the box for future updates. Will have to purchase that down the road.

Ultra-HD 4K Resolution w/ UHD Upscaling: The Samsung HU8550 series LED-LCD TV has a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution; regardless of input signal. The Ultra-HD TV even offers "HEVC" decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K content from online movie & TV show providers (like Netflix). 4K provides 4x higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition TVs, ensuring a truly immersive experience for all your favorite movies and TV shows. UHD Upscaling delivers the complete Ultra-HD picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or full-HD content to Ultra-HD-level picture quality.
Note: You can upgrade this HU8550 series LED-LCD TV with Samsung's One Connect Box (sold separately) to unlock new features and services offered by Samsung Electronics. With the One Connect Box from Samsung, you can update the TV with new software and technology that will adapt to future Ultra-HD standards and improve TV performance; faster speed, more content, more features. The One Connect Box simply plugs into the TV using a single proprietary cable.
LED Edge-Lighting w/ Local Dimming: Samsung's LED Edge-Lighting technology w/ UHD Dimming + Precision Black Local Dimming maximizes the contrast between lights and darks to create a picture that is as true-to-life as possible. The television's white LEDs are arranged along the left and right edges of the screen and a proprietary light guide is used to focus its luminance inwards towards the middle of the screen for a more uniform brightness.
Clear Motion Rate 1200: Clear Motion Rate (CMR) is Samsung's more comprehensive and accurate measure for how well the LED-LCD TV can display fast-moving images. Previously, motion clarity was expressed simply by the refresh rate, measured in Hz. CMR, however, takes into account all three factors that contribute to motion clarity: panel refresh rate, image processor speed and backlight technology. CMR is measured by determining the thinnest line a TV can display in a moving image. The thinner the line, the higher the CMR rating, and the clearer the picture you'll enjoy on the screen.
Auto Motion Plus: Auto Motion Plus removes blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. Auto Motion Plus reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Advanced panels and unique backlight technology combine with proprietary algorithms to reduce the response time and yield a more accurate image reproduction with faster onscreen motion. Auto Motion Plus can be set to Clear, Standard, Smooth, Custom, or Off.
Wide Color Enhancer Plus + Auto Depth Enhancer: With Wide Color Enhancer Plus, you'll witness a wider spectrum of colors on the TV screen, just like the director intended. You'll enjoy enriched colors while watching your favorite movies, and shows, even if it's older, non-HD content. Auto Depth Enhancer is innovative picture technology that analyzes regions of each image and automatically adjusts the contrast for a greater sense of depth. As a result, everything you watch has incredible detail and appears more natural.
Video Inputs: The Samsung Ultra-HD LED-LCD TV offers Ultra-HD, high-definition, and standard definition video inputs.
Note: The TV feature a single RF-type coaxial input for connecting an external indoor/outdoor antenna. The unit has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals (up to 1080i).
HDMI (MHL) Port: The HDMI 3 port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 3 (MHL) port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Samsung TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 3 port. To find MHL-certified devices, go to www.mhlconsortium.org.
Ultra-HD 3D (4 Pair of Glasses Included): With Ultra-HD 3D you get 4x the resolution of Full HD 1080p while watching 3D. Samsung The TV utilizes Bluetooth-enabled active shutter glasses for an ultra 4K 3D viewing experience when coupled with a 3D source, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player or an HD 3D broadcast from satellite or cable providers (connected via HDMI 2.0). The Samsung LED-LCD TV automatically adjusts the overall picture to provide an optimal 3D effect. The Samsung 3D TV also offers a unique feature that allows you to intensify your 2D viewing experience by up-converting it to virtual 3D. In addition, you can adjust the overall 3D perspective, 3D image depth, and 3D brightness.
Note: Samsung 3D TV supports Ultra-HD 3D for 3840 x 2160p (24/30Hz), 1920 x 1080p (24/60Hz), 1920 x 1080i (60Hz), and 1280 x 720 (60Hz) video signals.
Multi-Link Screens: The Samsung HU8550 series LED-LCD TV supports Quad Screen and PIP.
Picture Control: You can make the following adjustments for an optimum picture.
Note: You can adjust and store Picture Settings for each external device connected to the TV or apply the settings to all inputs and sources.
Film & Game Modes: The television provides Film & Game modes.
BD Wise: BD Wise Plus provides the optimal picture quality for Samsung DVD, Blu-ray, and Home Theater products which support BD Wise. When BD Wise is set to On, the TV's picture mode is automatically changed to the optimal resolution.
DNSE+ Processing: The Samsung LED-LCD TV employs DNSe+ processing which provides selectable custom settings for experiencing virtual surround sound with maximum bass response, dialog clarity, and 3D Audio for any source; including Blu-ray movies, TV programming, streaming, and games.
Note: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Wall-Mount" or "Stand" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.
5-Band EQ + Sound Modes: You can manually adjusts the TV's built-in 5-band EQ (100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz) for a more customized sound; or simply choose from the following Preset Sound Modes - Standard (normal mode), Music (music mode), Movie (movie mode), Clear Voice (emphasizes voices), and Amplify (increases clarity for people who have difficulty hearing).
Audio Extras: The Samsung TV offers a variety of audio adjustments to meet your listening needs.
Audio Outputs: The Samsung LED-LCD television provides an analog and digital audio output.
ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 4 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB port can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.
Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 4 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.
SoundShare: The TV is compatible with the SoundShare feature found on some Samsung active soundbar speaker systems). SoundShare makes a wireless connection between the TV and the speaker system via Bluetooth. Once the two are paired, you can control the volume and mute the sound by using the remote control from the TV or the speaker system. If you change the soundbar speaker system from TV mode to another mode or turn it off, the TV audio will resume playing from the TV's speakers. SoundShare can be found on select Samsung active soundbar speaker systems (sold separately).
Samsung's Quad Core Processor: Samsung's Quad Core processing speeds allow you to perform multiple tasks at the same time, such as using an app while downloading another one. It also enables extremely faster web browsing and application access. Quad Core eliminates lag to give you a fluid browsing experience. It enables you to switch between apps, stream content, and multi-task faster. This extra power also provides faster page refreshing
Network Connection (wired/wireless): You can set up the Samsung HU8550 series LED-LCD TV so that it can access your home network and online Samsung Apps through your local area network (LAN) using a wired (RJ-45 Ethernet) or wireless connection (built-in WiFi). You can setup a wired network connection automatically or manually. You can setup the wireless network connection using these four methods; Automatic, Manual, WPS (PBC), or WPS (PIN). The TV's built-in WiFi supports IEEE 802.11A/B/G/N wireless LAN networks and WEP (open/shared), WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES), or WPA2-PSK network security; a dual-band Gigabit wireless-N router is recommended for 4K streaming.
Note: Samsung recommends a home network connection speed of at least 2.5 Mbps for standard definition, 10 Mbps for high definition, and 15 Mbps for ultra-high definition.

Jeremy, I used Sony for a comparison and five other major brands when I was looking to update my video system.I purchased the Samsung UN55HU8550 because it had all the features I wanted and then some, plus it all boiled down to the best picture in all types of settings, (bright or dark rooms, watching action movies, etc.). It took about an hour to set up but it was well worth it. The only problem I have now is my house is the one all my friends want to come and watch the games at.The picture is so crisp it seems your looking out a window. It's hard to do a side by side comparison at a store because most stores take the TV out of the box and don't have time to set it up they just hook it up and turn it on. I hope this might help a little bit. [ REYNOLD Nov 18, 2014 ]
The Samsung's Smart Hub has Netflix preloaded with closed captioned capability. This feature is important to me & so far the Samsung UHD TV has been flawless. [ John Nov 18, 2014 ]
Samsung is great product and Sony is overpriced. You pay more for Sony name than the product. My Samsung 4K tv is working great and picture is amazing. I bough minet in May. The only thing I regret is that i should wait few months to buy it cheaper as the prices went down. [ GRZEGORZ Nov 18, 2014 ]
This TV does not have built-in DVR functionality, so you'll need to use the DVR provided by your cable operator. Alternatively, you could use a third-party DVR i.e. TiVo. [ David Sep 02, 2014 ]
Hi Carol--I think that is the only way. The TV doesn't have a built-in hard drive or DVR. [ Michael Sep 02, 2014 ]
The only way I have ever recorded is with the DVR via the cable box from the cable company. [ STEVE Sep 02, 2014 ]
