Our take on the Samsung PN58C8000

The 8000 series: Samsung's finest plasma TVs for 2010 — 3D-ready and lots more
3D TV Learn more 3D TV is exciting by itself, and it also carries some cool side benefits. The demands of displaying 3D required Samsung to develop their most advanced plasma screens ever — the C8000 series. If you saw Avatar, you know how much 3D adds to the movie experience. You feel more a part of the on-screen action, and characters actually seem more real. When you combine the PN58C8000 with a 3D video source and Samsung's 3D glasses (sold separately), you can enjoy a viewing experience that literally opens a window to another dimension.

How 3D TV works
3D technology creates the illusion of depth in a two-dimensional image by presenting a slightly different view to each eye. Our eyes and brain do this every day, allowing us to see the world around us in 3D. Samsung's PN58C8000 achieves a similar result by using a special plasma panel that can actually display two different versions of a video image, with the video frames alternating at very high speed.

It's not 3D without the glasses...
Samsung's special 3D glasses work hand in glove with the screen to create three-dimensional images. These liquid-crystal "shutter" glasses alternately block out the left or right lens in coordination with the frames flashing on screen. The glasses communicate wirelessly with the PN58C8000 via infrared beams. It sounds complicated, but it works seamlessly, creating an intensely immersive experience for movies, sports, and video games.

...and a source of 3D video
The ultimate 3D viewing experience starts with video material that was filmed or created in 3D. You can choose from several 3D Blu-ray players, and a limited number of 3D Blu-ray titles should be available. Also, ESPN® and DIRECTV® have launched dedicated 3D channels so that true 3D content is available to over 40 million satellite and cable TV viewers. As a bonus, the PN58C8000 features powerful video processing that creates a 3D effect with standard 2D broadcasts, Blu-rays, DVDs and video games.

When you're connected to the Web, there's always something cool to watch
This is one of Samsung's Smart TV models, so you can connect your broadband Internet service and use the set's built-in apps to get to some of the most popular online entertainment sites. You'll love being able to instantly watch movies streaming from Netflix®, and order on-demand high-def titles from Vudu™. You can even use one of the TV's USB ports to plug in Samsung's Wi-Fi® adapter to bring all this online content to you wirelessly.

Clear Image Panel: Samsung's Clear Image Panel technology delivers clear images from every angle without the dual images and blurring typically found with conventional panels. This single-filter clear panel design eliminates the off-angle reflections that cause picture blurring of images and details so images look great at virtually any angle.

E-Panel Technology: Samsung's E-panel technology combines superior picture quality with enhanced color, saturation, and contrast; as well as energy efficiency. The E-Panel system features two separate unique technologies. FilterBright minimizes glare and reflections for optimal viewing any time of day and 600Hz Subfield Motion with a .001ms response time help to deliver a clear picture for sports, action, and other fast-moving scenes

  • FilterBright Anti-Glare Filter: The anti-glare filter reduces reflections noticeably while maintaining ultra-high picture contrast. Daytime sports events look crisp and bright, while movies at night feature rich blacks and realistic shadow detail. Minimized image glare and maximized contrast make this HDTV perfect for the ultimate viewing experience day or night.
  • 600Hz Subfield Motion: The television features 600Hz Subfield Motion technology with a fast 0.001ms response time that minimizes blurring of fast motion in sports programming and movie content.

Real Black Filter:  The Samsung Real Black Filter reduces the onscreen glare caused by external light, so every black shadow and dark detail is as crisp and well defined as possible.

Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio: This Plasma TV has a mega dynamic contrast ratio of 7,000,000:1, giving you brilliant brightness and contrast for superior picture and detail from both PC and TV images.

Cinema Smooth Processing: Cinema Smooth lets you enjoy the unbelievably smooth, realistic action in every frame.

Motion Judder Canceller: Samsung's Motion Judder Canceller virtually eliminates blurring, even with fast-moving images. Whether you're watching action films or sporting events, you won't miss a second of the action.

Crystal Full HD Engine: Images of incredible clarity are achieved by the Samsung Crystal Full HD Engine chip. By unifying all of the TV's advanced imaging technologies, the Samsung Crystal Full HD Engine expands performance, enhances all aspects of the image, and takes picture quality and image integrity to new levels of excellence.

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Native Resolution: The Plasma television displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The television's HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.

Video Inputs: The Samsung Plasma TV features analog (component/composite) and digital (HDMI) video inputs.

  • HDMI (ver.1.4): The Samsung Plasma TV features four rear-panel 1080p (24/60Hz) HDMI 1.4 inputs. The Samsung Plasma TV supports HDMI 1.4 (with 3D and Audio Return Channel). The HDMI 1 input can also be used to connect a device with a DVI output (a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable is necessary). If a DVI-equipped device is used, a separate audio cable will also be needed from the device to the "PC/DVI Audio In" 3.5mm stereo audio jack. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV.
  • Component Video: The Samsung Plasma TV features one component video input. The component video input will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. The component video input can also be used as a composite video input (480i only).

Hyper Real 3D Engine: The Plasma TV's Hyper Real 3D Engine enables you to view 3D video from HDMI 1.4 3D (1920 x 2205p-24Hz and 1280 x 1470p-50/60Hz) sources and standard HDMI 2D (1920 x 1080p-24Hz or 1280 x 720p-50/60Hz)  sources. In order to view 3D video, you will need a pair of Samsung 3D Glasses (such as the 305P2100T; sold separately). You can adjust the images for the left and right eye to enhance your 3D experience. The Samsung Plasma TV offers various 3D modes to match your 3D viewing needs.

  • 2D-3D: Changes a 2D image to 3D; you can adjust the focus and depth of the image to maximize 3D experience.

PIP, Auto Program, and some Picture Adjustment functions will be disabled in 3D mode.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The ARC function enables digital output of sound using the television's HDMI (ver.1.4) In 2 port and can only be operated when the TV is connected to an audio receiver that also supports the ARC function. When the Input Source of the Plasma television is the TV (antenna), the ARC function allows audio from the TV to be heard through a connected AV receiver via the television's HDMI 2 input. The audio is sent from the Plasma TV to your receiver via a single HDMI cable without the need for a separate optical cable.

Note: The ARC (Audio Return Channel) function is only supported on the television's HDMI 2 input. Your receiver must also support the ARC function and must be connected using a Category2 High-Speed HDMI cable

Anti Burn-In Technology: To reduce the possibility of screen burn-in, this Plasma TV is equipped with screen burn-in prevention technology. The on and off timers work independently of one another.

ENERGY STAR Compliant with ECO Settings: The Samsung Plasma TV is ENERGY STAR compliant and provides ECO settings to reduce the TV's power consumption and cut-down on energy costs.

  • ECO Sensor: To enhance your power savings, the picture settings will automatically adapt to the light in the room.
  • Energy Saver: This feature adjust the brightness of the TV in order to reduce power consumption. When watching TV at night, set the Energy Saver feature to High to reduce eye fatigue as well as power consumption. You can set this feature to High, Medium, Low, Auto, or Picture Off (sound remains on).
  • No Signal Standby: The TV will automatically switch to standby mode, if no picture is being received for a predetermined set amount of time (15, 30, or 60 minutes).

Self Diagnosis: The Samsung Plasma TV provides a Self Diagnosis menu which allows you to check the television for picture and sound problems.

Remote Control

Illuminated Remote: The supplied remote control is designed to only operate the Samsung Plasma television and Anynet+ connected components. You can use the remote control up to a distance of about 23 feet from TV with a direct line of sight. The remote's buttons are backlit and will light up with a press of a button.

Note: This remote control has Braille points on the Power, Channel, and Volume buttons for the visually impaired.

Anynet+: Anynet+ is a function that enables you to control all connected Samsung devices that support Anynet+ with the Samsung television's remote control. The Anynet+ system can be used only with Samsung devices that support the Anynet+ features. The Anynet+ feature must be turned on in the menu to function.

Mounting Options

Pedestal Stand: The TV is shipped with the pedestal stand unattached. The pedestal stand attaches to the television using the supplied hardware. The pedestal stand allows the TV to swivel left to right +/- 20-degrees. The television weighs 88.2 lbs with the stand.

Wall Mounting: The TV has four threaded inserts on the back-panel for use with an optional wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 600 x 400 (600mm horizontal x 400mm vertical) in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The threaded inserts require M8 (8mm) machine screws (not supplied). The television weighs 73.4 lbs without the stand.

Note: The four supplied plastic ring-holders should be used when installing an optional wall-mount bracket. The right-angle AC plug sits 1.0" from the wall.

nice player

Written By rc5695, Upstate SC on Friday, February 11, 2011

This player works great. Easy hookup with HDMI cable and a power cord! Crystal clear movies!!!

Great thing: it will automatically turn on my Samsung TV when I hit eject on this player. Also, if I'm watching TV and insert a DVD, it will automatically switch sources from TV to DVD.

Pausing, fast-forwarding, etc. is great on this player. Stopping will resume where you last left off when you hit play.

I'd buy one again in a heartbeat!

Get Plasma for 3D

Written By Terry G, Longview, TX on Saturday, February 05, 2011

I had researched extensively and found that Plasma was the way to go for the best 3D content and the 2D was rated highly as well. I then researched which TV was the best 3D and still had great 2D. Samsung won hands down. I must have visited 25 sites and read as many forums to make my decision and they were not wrong. This set is great.

It has wonderful depth, black color, and as far as I can see no ghosting to speak of. The screen does not run hot as some plasmas have been known to do and we use it a lot. I have had it for about a month now and it is on from the time we get home from work to the time we go to bed and most the day on Saturday and Sunday.

The connections and onscreen info is great. The canned programs that Samsung offers is great and the widgets you can add are useful as well. I would recommend Vudu for all your instant movie viewing...they ahve better selection of new content and allow you to select from SD, HD or HD THX format to rent...each has a dfferent price. You only have to pay per view as well. The picture on the HD or HD THX is hands down the best...better than NetFLix, BlockBuster or VOD on your satellite.

It is a great TV, that looks great in 3D and 2D.

One small complaint is that the speakers on the TV are a little weak. Not much bass.

It's simply the best TV out there!

Written By Derron, Richmond, VA on Sunday, November 21, 2010

I too did tons of research on what the best tvs are out there. I've always been a big plasma fan but when it came to this purchase I also considered others including Sony and the Sharp Aquos. However, at the end of the day I decided on this TV and I am glad I did.

The picture is INSANE...period. Since I also got the free 3D Samsung Blue Ray Player and two pairs of glasses I just couldn't resist. I wasn't going for a 3D set so it was more of a bonus for me since my first choice was incredible picture quality. I've owned a couple of Panasonic Plasmas and this is every bit of good in terms of picture quality.

As far as 3D is concerned...I'm actually pretty impressed! In addition, the features including online and aps are awesome on this TV.

Bottom line...this is the best tv on the market. Almost wish I got the 65'!!!

Nice TV , but not for long =(

Written By TV guy, Florida on Saturday, November 20, 2010

At first the TV had a great picture except for the motion judder option making a weird pixilation look around moving objects such as people. Turning off the motion judder option fixed that.
What makes me give this TV 1 star is the fact that it burns in very easily.
With a cable connection the commercials and many shows have black bars on the side and/or top and bottom of the screen. This is unavoidable unless you expand the picture for each different show or commercial.
After 6 months of use the burn in is very noticable and not coverered by the warranty.
I suggest buying a LED/LCD model instead of ANY plasma.
The manufacturer says burn in isn't as common with new models, but I have proof hanging in my living room that says otherwise.

Great TV

Written By Rob, CA on Sunday, October 24, 2010

This is a stunning TV. Do not believe people when they tell you otherwise. Is the Panasonic better? It may have a deeper black, but samsung has more features and a better price. Also the black level on this TV is nothing to complain about. The only way you would tell the difference between the panasonic and this set is if you were in a brightly lit room and uou pause the 2 sets in certain parts of a movie and then look closly at the two (kinda like finding Waldo). There is a buzz coming froming the TV as many people have said. But as soon as you turn the volume up past 6 it is drowned out. The only complaint I really have is the sound performance on this television. The sound qualiity is sub par for such a beautiful picture. But, if you set it up to a sound system of any type (even a $300) you will love the picture and sound. For all those wondering about the 3D...well it isNOT a GIMIC (for those that can view 3D). The quality realy depends on the source, such as Clash of the Titans is very unimpressing (because it was 2D-converted to 3D), but How to Train a Dragon looks wonderful. Many people believe that panasonic has better 3D performance. Well it does, but it is not the television, it is actually the active shutter glasses. As soon as the universal 3D glasses become available the Samsung will have a better 3D picture than the Panisonic using their glasses.

Beautiful TV

Written By Seth C, Saratoga Springs, NY on Wednesday, October 20, 2010

I did A LOT of research before buying this one. Had a 52" Sony XBR3 from about 3 years ago. Beautiful picture, except my 3 year old daughter put a golf ball into the screen....so time to upgrade to 3D, I guess. After much deliberation, visiting my local stores, researching online, etc, I settled on this set. I am VERY happy. I have a very bright room, and the glare is virtually non-existent. Bright whites and very dark blacks. 3D is cool, with some depth, but is not why I bought the set. I bought it as I was looking for the best 2D picture available. By the way, it's a very pretty set to look at, WAY better than the Panasonic top end set.
Crutchfield was absolutely awesome! You can find this set for less other places, but no where will you get the customer service and support you get here. Arrived less than a week later in fantastic shape. Not even a scratch on the box. No regrets here. Thanks Crutchfield.

Great TV but needs some tweaking!!!

Written By Frise11a, Rockford, IL on Friday, October 15, 2010

i LOVE LOVE LOVE this TV. I did my homework and opted for a plasma over LED and at first I was dissapointed by the picture, but after a few hours tweaking and some online research, I love the picture. Way more vibrant colors than LCD and beautiful blu-ray picture. I have a new PS3 and the new Medal of Honor in Game Mode is absolutely stunning! The only thing that bothers me is the lack of built in wi-fi. If you have an external internet adapter that is not Samsung brand, it will not work. The only way to use the internet tv wirelessly is with a samsung wireless usb stick. You can always hard wire it from your router, but I dont see the point in all the samsung apps and widgets. I have not heard any buzzing from my television and the picture is great. You can find optimal video settingsfor this model on cnet.com. I also want to say that the delivery was prompt, professional and courteous. Alot of people don't know this, but your tv box should have a tip and tell sensor and a drop/shock sensor directly on the box. This will tell you if it was tipped or dropped during delivery. Mine were intact. Buy this TV! One last thing. 3D IS A GIMMICK. Not that big of a deal and is overrated. Don't buy this TV if you are only focused on the 3D use. It is a nice feature to have and the glasses and movie were included, but I could do without it.

Dissappointed in Samsung quality control

Written By DavidG, Scarsdale, NY on Thursday, September 09, 2010

We were in the market for a TV in our new home and I began researching extensively. Felt plasma was the way to go due to 3D, dim room and wide viewing angles. Eventually, I settled on the Samsung PN58C8000. I liked the Real Black Filter and judder control of the 8000 vs the 7000. Got the bundle pack with glasses, 3DBlu-Ray and movie. We also ordered a couple kids 3d glasses. TV arrived with very loud buzz and no picture. Called Crutchfield and they did some troubleshooting over the phone and then sent another TV. I received a new TV 3 days later and they picked up the bad TV. This time, I paid for white glove delivery to ensure everything worked upon delivery and guess what? The same problem. The screen was blank and a horrific buzz. I tried a line conditioner, different rooms. Nothing. Called Crutchfield and again, they were amazing and sent out another TV. I got nervous about plasma and since I already had the Samsung bundle and glasses, I opted for the UN46C9000. I'll add a review for that TV when I receive it.

This was a difficult review because I feel it was a fluke that I got a couple bad TV's. Maybe there was a bad batch. I'm not sure how reflective this is of the TV or Samsung. I'm sure if the TV would have worked, I would have been very happy with it. Crutchfield deserves a 5 star rating though as they were incredibly helpful and friendly throughout the whole process.

Great TV

Written By Will, Kensington, MD on Thursday, September 02, 2010

So....after much deliberation, and fear that I might be purchasing the wrong TV...happy to say this thing is amazing. No Buzz. No Buzz. No Buzz. Picture is flawless. Is it a Pioneer Elite Kuro--maybe not--but is the Kuro an inch thick? Compared to the Panasonic VT25, I think Samsung might have an edge. The picture is ridiculous. And did I mention its an inch thick? I bought the TV because I wanted a large set without the "weirdo" processing on the Samsung LEDs. (If you've watched 'em, you know what I mean). Only scary moment was when I powered it up and saw all the pixellation around moving objects. A quick turn off of the De-Judder, and all is well again. Blacks are waaaaay black, and 3D is pretty neat too. Didn't really care for the 3D option, but tried out the Monsters vs. Aliens DVD and while headache inducing, the effect is jaw dropping.

Couldn't be happier. Don't hesitate to buy this thing, worth every penny.
