Our take on the Samsung PN60F5500

by Steve Kindig
Samsung

The pros of plasma

If you're into picture quality, and you want a cinema-like home viewing experience, you owe it to yourself to check out plasma for your next TV. Plasma holds the edge when it comes to smooth motion and rich colors — high-def movies and TV shows look effortlessly real. Plasma's superior picture contrast and deep black levels are best enjoyed in rooms without a lot of windows or lamps, where you can dim or darken the lights.

Samsung PN60F5500

Treat your eyes to the beauty of plasma

Samsung's 60" PN60F5500 creates vibrant, engaging images whether you're watching 2D or 3D video. 3D certainly makes you feel more a part of the on-screen action, and while true 3D content is still kind of scarce, this set's 2D-to-3D conversion creates an added sense of depth with the push of a button. If you're already a 3D fan, just slip on a pair of the included 3D glasses and add another dimension to your viewing enjoyment. But don't think this model is all about 3D — it will also make all your 2D video sources look better than you've ever seen them.

This Smart TV will make you feel smart, too

When you connect to your broadband Internet service you'll see why Samsung calls this a Smart TV. Built-in web apps let you instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix®, or catch up on TV shows you missed with Hulu Plus™. There's tons more to explore, and if your PC is networked you can even search through the video and music you've stored on it using the TV's remote. This set's built-in Wi-Fi® gives you another way to take advantage of your wireless network.

The PN60F5500 makes finding great things to watch easier. Samsung's innovative Smart Hub organizes your favorite entertainment into five simple panels: On-TV, Movies and Shows, Social, Apps, and a panel for your personal photos, videos and music. You can actually ask the TV for recommendations while you're watching, like "what football games are on?" You speak into the microphone built into the touchpad remote, which feels more natural than talking to the TV screen.

Samsung's Galaxy phones and tablets play well with this TV

If you have a Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the PN60F5500. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like toss photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.

Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's free Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the TV's screen on your Galaxy S3 phone or Galaxy tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind. Think of the possibilities.

Video Features

Wide Color Enhancer Plus: Wide Color Enhancer Plus allows you to see picture color the way the director originally intended. Witness the entire RGB spectrum brought to life on your screen to bring you exceptionally vibrant, yet natural-looking images faithful to the director's original intent.

600Hz Subfield Motion: The Samsung F5500 series Plasma TV features 600Hz Subfield Motion technology with a fast 0.001ms response time that minimizes blurring of fast motion in sports programming and movie content. The 600Hz Subfield Motion technology makes action more life-like and natural looking. Action scenes and sporting events are crisp, clear and picture perfect. 600Hz Subfield Motion flashes a single image up to 600 times a second creating unprecedented picture quality. Contours are crisper and scrolling text sharper; no matter how fast images are moving. Fast action scenes are both clear with rich deep color detail.

Cinema Smooth: Movies are shot at 24 fps (frames per second); Cinema Smooth is a refined playback process of 24p movies from Blu-ray and Satellite TV sources that accurately converts and displays content originally shot on film at 24fps as compared to the 30fps of DVD and Blu-ray disc. This allows for smoother motion scenes when watching sources shot at the standard movie rate of 24fps.

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

1080p Resolution: The Samsung F5500 series Plasma TV displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The television's HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.

  • HDMI (v.1.4): The Samsung Plasma TV features three HDMI 1.4 inputs to connect to your Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, or AV receiver. All HDMI inputs support x.v.Color, Deep Color, 3D, and CEC. The HDMI 2 input also supports the ARC function. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV.
  • Component Video: The Plasma TV features a single component video input. The TV's component video input can also be used as a composite video input (480i only).

Full HD 3D (via HDMI 1.4): The Samsung F5500 series Plasma TV offers Full HD (1080p) 3D capability. Samsung 3D TV utilizes Bluetooth-enabled active shutter glasses (two pair included) for a full 1080p 3D viewing experience when coupled with a 3D source, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player or an HD 3D broadcast from satellite or cable providers (connected via HDMI 1.4). The Samsung F5500 series Plasma TV automatically adjusts the overall picture to provide an optimal 3D effect. The Samsung 3D TV also offers a unique feature that allows you to intensify your 2D viewing experience by up-converting it to virtual 3D. In addition, you can adjust the overall 3D perspective (+/-5) and overall 3D image depth (1-10). Samsung 3D TV supports Full HD 3D for 1920 x 2205p (24Hz) or 1280 x 1470p (60Hz) video signals; and virtual 3D for 1920 x 1080p (24/30/60Hz), 1920 x 1080i (60Hz), or 1280 x 720p (60hz) video signals. The Samsung F5500 series Plasma TV offers various 3D modes to match your 3D viewing needs.

  • 2D-3D: Changes a 2D image to 3D; you can adjust the focus and depth of the image to maximize 3D experience.
  • Side-by-Side: Displays two images next to each other. Available when the resolution is 720p, 1080i or 1080p.

Note: 2010 Samsung IR 3D glasses and3D glasses from other manufacturers are not compatible. Some 3D modes may not be available depending on the format of the image source. PIP, Auto Program, and some Picture Adjustment functions will also be disabled in 3D mode.

Included 3D Glasses (2 pair): The Samsung F5500 series Plasma TV includes two pair of 3D active glasses with built-in Bluetooth. Samsung's 3D Active Glasses (SSG-5100GB) offer a comfortable fit through its lightweight frame and flexible noise- and ear-pieces. The Samsung 3D Active Glasses are powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium coin-type battery (pre-installed). The battery can last up to 150 hours when powered on. The Samsung's 3D Active Glasses provide a viewing range between 6.5' and 19.5' from the Samsung 3D-ready TV.

Note: If the 3D glasses move outside of the recommended operating distance, the signal from the TV will be disconnected and the display of the 3D glasses will turn off after several seconds. If you lie on your side while watch TV with 3D glasses, the picture may look dark or may not be visible. When viewing 3D video under fluorescent lighting (50-60Hz), you may notice a small amount of screen flickering.

The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI or RCA.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB port can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.

Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 2 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

SoundShare: The TV is compatible with the SoundShare feature found on some Samsung Crystal Surround AirTrack active speaker systems (sound bars). SoundShare makes a wireless connection between the TV and the speaker system via Bluetooth. Once the two are paired, you can control the volume and mute the sound by using the remote control from the TV or the speaker system. If you change the AirTrack from TV mode to another mode or turned off, the TV audio will resume playing from the TV's speakers. SoundShare can be found on the Samsung HW-F450, HW-F550, HW-F551, HW-F750, and HW-F850.

60 Decades / 60" Samsung

Written By dj, Panama City Beach FL on Tuesday, March 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this TV for my Husband's 60th Birthday. He loves it! Matter of fact, he loves it so much I'm starting to feel a little neglected! After acquiring the necessary items for our specific installation, everything about setting up the features is pretty easy. Picture quality is outstanding. We installed in our bedroom so adding a sound bar would be a matter of preference; but sound quality is excellent in our space. Unit overall is sleek and of high quality design / materials. And at our age, having something you can actually see without your glasses is a big plus.
Pros:
Crutchfield - Outstanding Service, Easy Ordering Process, Quick and Efficient Delivery, and Service After The Sale! Samsung - Beautiful Picture, Excellent Sound Quality, High Marks for Workmanship!
Cons:
Not enough information in the Owner's Manual. Although detailed information provided on-line would have like a little more about all the different uses and maybe a Quick Reference Laminated Card (paper gets worn out and is subject to spills, etc during set-up & learning process), Also would have liked to have had recommendations from Samsung / Crutchfield regarding Best Compatible Wireless Gateway.

I have had the tv for about 3 weeks so far and absolutely love it. The picture quality is great. I can not attest to the sound because I always use external speakers. The remote is a little tricky to use but I don't use it much either because I have a single remote for all my devices.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tv was what exactly what I was looking for, did research and found Crutchfield had the best price. Wont lie I never considered purchasing from you guys cause I always assumed you guys were more expensive. I can admit I was wrong, not only were you the cheapest, you had a special in which I got a blue ray player, along with free shipping.....who could beat that, and I couldn't pass it up. I will definitely be considering you guys for all of my future purchases. Value is awesome, a 60" plasma, smart, 3d tv.....come on AWESOME value. In my opinion, anything can be easy to use if you read the white book with words in it that come with pretty much all things....believe they call it THE MANUAL.... 3d can take regular tv and transform it, and it looks great.
Pros:
3d (looks great), smart tv, versatile universal remote ( its able control my cable box (dvr, and guide), and my sound bar). Never use the voice control on the remote, do like the mouse pad. Slim, not super slim but slim.
Cons:
Wouldnt consider these to really be cons cause I knew what I was getting with a plasma TV, but the Tv can produce a good amount of heat, and can have a slight humming noise. However I mounted the tv over my mantle, and I dont sit near or give my Tv a big hug, so heat is never an issue and you pretty much always watch tv with sound so the humming doesnt come into effect unless you mute the Tv and are looking for it. The remote can take longer to change the channel, fast forward with cable box.

For the price this tv has met and exceeded all my expectations. The picture quality is fantastic cannot comment on the sound as I have hooked to a bose surround system which makes the whole experience even better. This is my basement tv which does not get daily use which is why I did not want to spend too much but would highly recommend plasma. Also if you live near the Crutchfield store they will deliver and remove the old tv. While they were at the house we discussed mounting on the wall. They came back two days later and did a wonderful job!!!

This is my first Smart TV. I love the picture of a plasma screen and this one is fantastic! The smart tv functions are incredible also. Would definitely buy another one of this model tv and recommend to friends and family.
Pros:
Great Picture. Great Price. Great TV.
Cons:
I am not a fan of how you have to type in words on the "search" function of say a youtube video or something like that. Would be much easier if the letters were in a grid pattern like on the iPhone instead of A-Z being in a straight line.

Very satisfied - great TV

Written By JasonL, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, July 29, 2013

I've had this TV now for about two weeks. We've watched blu-ray disks, streaming video from netflix / hulu / etc, and the kids have played Xbox games on it. Ended up getting a soundbar and mounting it to the wall. Very, very happy with it overall. The picture is phenomenal, 3d is truly great, and the setup is pretty easy. The remote control is pretty good, but can be a bit finicky, and some aspects of the remote / TV are just plain confusing. The manual is pretty much worthless. The performance of the streaming TV services is great with this device - connects easily to our wireless router and maintains a strong connection, even though it's two floors away on opposite sides of the house.

Really good value for 60" HDTV with WiFi, 3D including (2) glasses, web browser, etc.
Pros:
Great picture, easy setup.
Cons:
Rather unconventional (bluetooth) remote. May just take some time to get used to.

I'm concerned with this TV's heat. I have an enclosed media niche and my current 8 year old Plasma produces a lot of heat. Are the newer models the same way? [ Elmyestro  Jan 15, 2014 ]

  • It's a pretty slim tv. I have the 60" and it doesn't produce that much heat as long as you have some space, for it to breath I think you will really like this tv. Not much heat to answer your question not like the older ones anyway [ BILLIE L   Jan 16, 2014 ]
  • I have had this TV for over 6 months and have not noticed any heat issues. It is a great tv [ MARC P   Jan 16, 2014 ]
  • I don't find heat to be any concern with this television. I'm very happy with the television. [ NANCY   Jan 16, 2014 ]
  • It is warm at best, I replaced a Panasonic Vera Class which I found was very hot. I started runninga small fan on low behind it and i feel it extended its life because beforel it actually crack popped, it use to go off because of the heat , when it cooled it would come back on so I regulated the temperature unitl it died. Having come from this mindset, just out of habit I still run the fan behind my big sets , the Samsung included since its purchase. This weekend will turn off the fan and see just how hot it will get with say 14 hours of continueous use. I'll respond after the test. I have it in a somewhat spacious den area with nothing close to it about 16" from the windowed wall on and open stand , air flows good around the samsung with the elevated design which i truly like . I applied cushion braces on two of the lower legs to appease my wife. [ BOBBY   Jan 16, 2014 ]
  • I also have a niche and heat is not a problem. I have to plasmas and never had an issue with excessive heat. [ MARCOS   Jan 16, 2014 ]
  • This is my first plasma TV, I can only reference it to what I had before (LCD) and to me it feels like it produces the same amount of heat when I stand near it emanating from the screen. My TV sits on a stand so I dont really encounter issues with the set related to heat. [ RENE   Jan 16, 2014 ]
I am considering a plasma and am concerned about light having an effect on the picture quality. Does anyone have an issue with the picture quality due to lighting? [ Todd999  Dec 06, 2013 ]

  • absolutelt i have this same tv and yes you can experience some but the brightness is sufficient enough to out way that little bit of as recommended make sure you hookup hdmi and get the HD service through your cable provider and svn still the over locals channels ith the proper antenna can get you PQ as well also there are software updates that seem to improve the PQ that stands for picture quality so you definitely want to have it hooked up to the internet so get the update much smoother and check for updates very two to three months. • no it's a pretty good tv. I have no complaints at all. Blue rays are great if you care bout that extra crisp clear look but great tv I love it. [ BILLIE L   Dec 06, 2013 ]
  • I made my tv like the theaters drapes for windows. [ JOHN R   Dec 06, 2013 ]
  • Mine is in our basement so light is not an issue. I do get some glare from what little light there is so I would hesitate to put in a bright room for daytime viewing. I love it in our basement though. If you buy it, the picture will be very dim out of the box. Don't let this scare you as the picture can be brightened considerably. [ JOSH   Dec 06, 2013 ]
  • I have bought plasma each time. If you have a lot of backlight, then LED may be the better choice (according to the experts). However, plasma has a warmer picture and has always done well for me. Good luck! [ JOHN C   Dec 06, 2013 ]
  • Since having the plasma I have never noticed any loss of picture quality due to lighting. I have been very pleased overall. [ GARY   Dec 06, 2013 ]
  • I purchased this tv and have it hooked up to an hd box and lighting does not have any effect on picture quality. .I have many comments on how great the quality of this picture looks. Like I said to get the true potential of this tv hook it up to hd. [ ANTONIO J   Dec 06, 2013 ]
  • I too asked a lot questions before purchasing a plasma. My tv is in a room with large windows with a lot of natural light. It is not exposed to direct sunlight. The picture is great with deep rich colors and clarity. I have no regrets. [ MARLO   Dec 06, 2013 ]
