Samsung UN60F8000

Samsung's ultra-slim flagship LCD TVs

Samsung has become the world leader in HDTVs based on the amazing performance and popularity of their LED-LCD technology. With the F8000 series, they've poured all their best ideas for design, picture quality and convenience into a sleek package. This model also includes the company's groundbreaking interactive voice and gesture controls.

What's behind the superb picture?

Samsung's main engineering focus on this model is the all-important backlight. The UN60F8000 uses an extremely sophisticated edge-lit LED backlight with Samsung's Precision Black local dimming. This is complemented by their Micro Dimming Ultimate software-based dimming, which adds another level of light control. You not only get the widest possible range from bright white to deep black, but also a nearly infinite number of shades in between.

Micro Dimming works by scanning the backlight "zones" across the picture and continuously adjusting brightness to optimize contrast scene by scene. The UN60F8000 uses the Ultimate version of this technology, which has twice as many backlight zones as the Pro version used in the next model down. It minimizes "halos" and other types of light-based distortion. This is a high-speed scanning backlight, which works along with the 240Hz screen refresh rate to virtually eliminate motion blur.

Beauty on the outside, brainiac on the inside

The UN60F8000 is one of Samsung's smartest Smart TVs ever thanks to a 1.35GHz quad-core processor. That's more horsepower than most tablets have. Besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Along with built-in apps for services like Netflix®, Hulu Plus™, and YouTube™, you can download new ones from Samsung's large selection of apps.

Samsung's Galaxy phones and tablets add handheld viewing and control

Samsung's AllShare™ Play lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you have a Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the UN60F8000. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like "toss" photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.

Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the UN60F8000's screen on your Galaxy S3 phone or tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind. Think of it as whole-house television you hold in your hand.

A 3D experience whenever you want

The Samsung UN60F8000 delivers a spectacular picture in 2D or 3D. Just slip on a pair of the included active glasses to enjoy a deeper view, and not just with true 3D video sources — switch on the TV's 2D-to-3D conversion for added depth with regular 2D video. And even if you're not interested in 3D this set still deserves consideration if picture quality is your number one priority.

Great TV

Written by: Scott from Honolulu, HI on April 12, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great TV. Word of advice if you are installing on a wall mount - there are two pieces in the black box that comes with the TV to allow you to connect the wall mount (the back of the TV is fatter on the bottom where the bottom end of the bracket screws in) so that it is flush to the TV. Picture is great. Easy to setup and plenty of inputs (though I only needed the one HDMI)

Pros: Allows you to turn off the sound effects, which are annoying. Two remotes. One for day-to-day stuff and one that is a full remote. Makes sense I suppose, but not sure I need another remote sitting in my remote drawer.

Cons: Some of the pop-ups can be a little annoying when the TV turns on. Particularly if you close the camera, you get a popup telling you it it not activated. Duh. Best just to leave the camera "open". As with most of these new devices, the internet browser is junk. The apps are just OK. Camera is not adjustable so if you want use the features it provides it you need to angle the whole TV (which is fine with a fully articulating wall mount) but otherwise I guess you are out of luck

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture quality exceeds my expectation. This TV replaced my Pioneer Elite plasma. In my opinion this set is a step up in overall picture quality. The Smart features are easy to navigate and wireless connectivity is really sweet according to my kids. The sound quality is lacking, but I expected that would be the case. Once it's matched with a good sound bar I know my viewing enjoyment will be even greater. This is my fourth Samsung, I couldn't be more pleased that I selected this model. As always the Crutchfield representative that assisted me in my selection was extremely helpful.

Pros: Phenomenal picture, easy operation and set-up.

Cons: Sound quality is lacking.

Great TV (2nd time around)

Written by: Kyle from Lubbock, TX on February 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this TV and received it approximately 1 week later. I mounted it, set up everything, and calibrated it based on some suggestions from the AVS Forum. The results were beautiful; everything worked flawlessly for about 1 day, and then all of my HDMI inputs died. The Smart Hub, ethernet and optical cable still worked, but nothing from any of the 4 HDMI ports. This was very frustrating, given Samsung's reputation and it being a high-end unit. However, I called Crutchfield, and they walked me through about 15 minutes of troubleshooting, which I had already performed (i.e. different cables from different devices in different inputs). From there, they said I could either have Samsung send a technician out to look at it, or they could send me a replacement unit. I opted for the replacement unit ,which arrived about another week later. I set it up just as the first unit, and it has been going strong for about 2 weeks now... fingers crossed. All in all I am very pleased with this TV. The picture quality is amazing; the Smart Hub is fairly intuitive. I can't speak to the sound quality, as I have it hooked up to a surround sound system, but hopefully anyone purchasing this TV will not be using the TV's speakers anyway. The only thing keeping me from giving this TV 5 stars was the problem first set's HDMI inputs.

Pros: Great picture quality, Smart Hub easy to use, Wide variety of inputs/ports. The picture settings menu is very involved with lots of adjustment options: can be a pro or con depending on your style.

Cons: If you are using a TV stand, it has to be at least as wide as your TV because the TV's pedestal spans the width of the TV.

My First Samsung TV

Written by: Donna from Charlottesville, VA on January 18, 2014

I've been a Sony TV fan for decades. I had a problem with a 5 yeary old Sony TV. Sony was great about it, and gave me many options on what to do about it. I paid to get a bigger/better/faster Sony TV. During a move across the country, that TV had some odd substrate failure. :( Probably not Sony's fault, but my son convinced me to give Samsung a try. I still love my Sony TVs, but wow. This thing is sweet. Best picture short of a 4K TV, and so many toys. I've only had it for about a month so far, but I couldn't be happier so far.

Pros: Wonderful picture. More toys than any other TV I've seen.

Cons: The camera atop the TV isn't very useful. Even though I have the TV positioned directly at the viewer's face, the camera points above my head, and can't be adjusted lower. I doubt I will use it. I wanted to take off a 1/4 star, but I can't on this website. The hardware that came with the TV to adapt to a wall mount didn't work for me. I called the support listed on the documentation. They were not at all helpful. Fortunately for me, I bought the TV from Crutchfield, and they were very helpful

Awesome

Written by: SeanL from Long Island NY on January 12, 2014

I was torn between this and a 55'' samsung 4K and I went with the larger of the two choices because bigger is better haha. My decision was based on the my viewing distance to the tv (12') and the lack of media for the 4K tv's as well as I am always skeptical of brand new technology as it changes so fast LED TV's have been out for a number of years and in my opinion Samsung has perfected their technology and it shows in this television. I could not have been happier with this purchase the clarity is amazing I do not have any regrets purchasing this instead of the 4K at all. The smart TV features are ok some of the options work good some are not so great for example the hand gestures to operate the TV work spotty at best and maybe it's me not doing it right but I could live without it. I love this TV and would recommend it highly.

Pros: Picture quality Smart remote is cool Direct TV compatible (do not need a receiver) Camera is fun to use with the kids 3D is amazing

Cons: Nothing to really complain about if this TV is on your want list get it!

Pros: Clear bright images on screen.Rich color and smoothe motion flow.Multi features and Skype

Cons: The Infrared Extender will not control my DishNet VIP622DVR cable box making necessary the use of the cable and television remotes to operate the set.Crutchfield,Samsung and DishNet tech support unable to resolve the problem

I initially thought the tv may be a little too big for my room, but after getting the picture settings figured out, this tv is great. Of course the hd sources offer the best picture, but as long as you are not too close to tv the standard definition shows are ok. The smart features are also nice.

Pros: Very thin and excellent picture quality on hd sources

Cons: Pricey

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is by far the best LED TV I've seen and I have several in my house. I have 1 other Samsung and have been very pleased with it for over 3 years now. So when I was shopping for my next TV, I only looked at Samsung. This TV had great reviews online, which led me to my final decision. I am very pleased and will keep buying Samsung as long as the quality stays top notch.

Pros: Excellent contrast and back-light. Clear Motion rating of 1200 is fantastic. Very thin design with inputs and outputs out of the way for a nice clean flush mounting to a wall. Easy to navigate menus and change settings. Plenty of great features, such as WiFi, voice recognition, motion control and a Smart Touch remote. The speakers sounded plenty loud although I am using external speakers through a home theater receiver.

Cons: None

Best TV I have ever had! The picture is terrific. I almost bought a plasma, but now I am glad I didn't. I don't use the voice control, but the had control sometimes comes in handy. I am not much of an advocate of 3D, so really can't rate the 3D performance. But the picture and looks of the TV make it a 5 star product in my mind. Delivery from Crutchfield was as usual, on time and without hastle.

The transaction was very good and shipping was very fast. Looking forward to working with them on the installation. So far the only Problem I have is the in ability to add the Djish network remote controls to the Yamaha remote.

Cons: unknown at this point because the system is not yet installed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned many panels over the years including The top Panasonic and Pioneer Plasmas. When LCD began to evolve I jumped on board with several different Samsung and Sony models. I can tell you without reservation, that this is LED TV perfected. The only complaint I have is the limited viewing angle, which is inherent in LCD technology. Perhaps if Samsung would begin using IPS panels we would see better viewing angles, but likely at the cost of contrast. This panel has excellent black levels and shadow detail. I see very little blooming, zero clouding and minimal image blur. Finally, no banding, which was an issue with previous generation local dimming technology. Frankly, IMHO the only improvement over the F8000 is 4k technology. However, you will only benefit if you sit really close to the screen, or if you go above 65", and 4k media is very limited. This panel really shows how far the technology has come. I'm not really into the "smart" technology and all of the apps, but Nerflix and Amazon worked as advertised.

Pros: Incredible picture

Cons: Poor viewing angle

Excellent TV, no complaints

I have been using this TV for a couple weeks now. The Smart TV options are great - Netflix, etc. Also, the picture and quality are amazing! I don't know how to use the talk to or hand gesture features yet, but they look great and will let you control the TV w/o the remote.

Pros: Great picture and very thin

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This 3D TV is one of the best you can get, at an affordable price! Picture is extremely clear and the refresh rate is really fast. My old Samsung was slow with its processor when in Smart Hub but this TV's quad-core processor is a MAJOR step up from its predecessors. Everything is smooth and clean. Apps load up instantly and the quality of the video that is streamed wirelessly from Netflix or Youtube is incredible. The TV is also extremely lightweight, only weighing about 45lbs. 5 Stars for this amazing unit.

Pros: Superior Picture Quality, Fast Quad-Core, Amazing Refresh Rate, Great Design, Lightweight.

Cons: TV Stand could be better, but hangs extremely well.

Pros: so far everything on this TV is great picture, apps, design quality is outstanding.

Great picture on this TV

Written by: Robert from Sacramento, CA on July 7, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV has a great picture. I notice a lot more detail now in the picture. The Black is BLACK. I turned off the DVR with the TV still on and I thought the TV was still on. I then noticed the little Samsung light (which you can turn off) was still on and turned it off.

Pros: Great picture, little lag when gaming, crazy light and thin for it's size. Stable on it's stand. Connected the the internet by itself, synced time, date and updated the firmware automatically. Low energy usage.

Cons: I wish you could get the TV without all the "Smart" features. Just the great picture.

Awesome TV!!

Written by: Conrad from Albuquerque, NM on June 22, 2013

I've had this TV for over 2 months now and I love it! The picture quality is simply amazing. The blacks are super black and the color is incredibly vivid. The design, minus the stand, is awesome. Sometimes while watching movies, the picture just seems like its floating in mid air. Movies, look incredible. Games look incredibly clear. This set is also feature packed to the brim. Coming from an older Samsung smart TV, the apps on the older TV lagged a lot. I could barely stand to use Netflix on it. With the new TV though, everything runs smooth like warm butter! In my opinion the 3D on this TV is much better then what you would find at the movie theater. A huge plus over my older Samsung, is that the movies that I play through my hard drive now run perfect, with absolutely no stutters. I haven't experienced anything like that regardless of what the bit rate or codec the movie is using. Another huge plus, especially for anime fans, is that this TV plays embedded subtitles!! Overall, I am unbelievably glad I got this TV!

Pros: Picture Quality Features Design Embeded subtitles

Cons: The stand. Although it finally got me to get a stand that I can hang my TV from. I wish I had gotten one a long time ago.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Where do I start except by saying that the whole experience has been phenomenal. From the time I placed my order to the extremely fast shipping from Crutchfield, the whole process has been amazingly great. If your contemplating if you should get it or not, I will say that it will not disappoint. I've watched several movies on Blu-ray,DVD,Verizon Fios cable,Netflix and even games on the PS3 and I have to say that it blew my family away big time. We still can't believe how awesome the resolution actually is. You can really see the actors face's in great detail. My other TV that we had was a LG LCD 1080P and it dosen't compare, not even close. We have no issues at all and the setup was easy enough for my ten year old to figure out. I love the smart features and all the things that it offers. There are some things I would delete but unfortunately I can't but it's not that big of a deal for me. I did get to try the 3D on my PS3 and it brought one of my games to life. I still haven't used it for any movies but I'm sure that it would look exactly like your in the theater. The sound from the TV is really good too compared to other TVS I looked at and compared them before I made my purchase at Crutchfield. It would be ideal to definitely get a Receiver, speakers and a sub-woofer from Crutchfield as the prices and service are bar-none. It also makes the whole experience really sound like the theater or better. Well I really hope that this review helps, thank you.

Pros: 3D LED,240 Refresh rate,Remote is simple to operate,Quad-Core for really fast experience and Zero lag time,Internet is fast especially with Fios,Smart TV with Netflix,Amazon etc.......Great TV.

Cons: Price but well worth it
