Our take on the Samsung HL61A750

NFL Samsung HDTV

Samsung is one of the most experienced and innovative makers of DLP televisions. All those years of expertise helped create the sleek, sophisticated HL61A750. This HDTV employs Samsung's latest LED technology to deliver a big, colorful picture that can really fill a room. And the cabinet's super-thin bezel gives this model a cool, all-screen look.

State-of-the-art LED light engine
Instead of using a lamp and spinning color wheel like most DLP sets, the HL61A750 features a series of rapid-flashing Light Emitting Diodes that produce the red, green and blue primary colors, as well as the TV's illumination. For the few people who occasionally see "rainbows" — distracting flashes of color — when watching conventional DLP TVs, Samsung's LED-based light engine usually solves the issue. This system delivers high-contrast images with an ultra-wide color range, and 40% higher brightness than last year's models. Other LED benefits include cooler, quieter operation, lower energy consumption, and much quicker start-up.

High-definition the way it was meant to be seen
The HL61A750 boasts 1080p resolution, which is pretty much a necessity to ensure a crystal-clear picture on a screen this large. Whether you get your high-definition signals from cable, satellite, or over-the-air, most HD programs are broadcast in 1080i. A 1080p set like this one lets you enjoy them in all their splendor and detail. This TV also lets you take full advantage of high-definition Blu-ray Disc™ players, which output video signals in ultra-clear and detailed 1080p resolution.

A wealth of inputs for a variety of viewing options
The HL61A750 gives you plenty of inputs for your current and future audio/video gear. Three HDMI inputs let you plug in high-def satellite receivers, video game consoles, and other HDMI-equipped components. This "3D-ready" HDTV can deliver a startling 3D experience at home. To make it happen, you need an optional "3D kit" — an IR emitter and special viewing glasses. Right now, only a limited amount of 3D content is available, and you have to connect your PC to the TV to view it.

Features

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.

Next Generation DLP Chip by Texas Instruments: Samsung employs a DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors capable of switching on and off at 15,000 or more times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast-moving images. When combined with Samsung's new Cinema Smooth Light Engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that's closer to film.

CinemaPure Color Engine: CinemaPure Color Engine creates a brilliant picture that's more lifelike and much closer to film quality. It displays 40% brighter than traditional HDTVs with a crisp, 1080p high definition resolution. You can rely on the Samsung DLP HDTV to deliver high contrast, defined edges and sharp details

LED Backlight: Not only does an LED backlight produce brilliant color, it lasts the life of the TV. This environmentally-friendly DLP TV uses an LED backlight which means there's no bulb to replace. The long-lasting Generation 2.4 LED consistently outperforms its traditional lamp-based counterparts, delivering outstanding picture quality and continuous light output for over 60,000 hours

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's DNIe makes input signals sharper, clearer, and more lifelike. It's advanced  image processors and six-times density enhancer help to create true-to-life colors and high contrast, while virtually eliminating digital artifacts. DNIe is made up of a Motion Optimizer, a Contrast Enhancer, a Color Optimizer and a Detail Enhancer to produce life-like images that rival reality.

Integrated HDTV Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals. The TV also has a 181-channel NTSC analog tuner. An additional QAM tuner decodes unscrambled digital cable signals.

Native Resolution: The television has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i (component only) signals and will display them as 1920 x 1080. The television features a full HD 1920 x 1080p digital format converter for all inputs.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by the TV is weak, you can activate the DNR feature to help reduce any static and ghosting effects that may appear on the screen.

Film Mode: The TV can be set to automatically sense and process film signals from all sources and adjust the picture for optimum quality.

Automatic Picture Settings: You can choose one of the following automatic picture modes:

  • Color Tone: choose from the following Color Tones - Cool2, Cool1, Normal, Warm1 or Warm2

One of the best TV's I've owned

Written By edamon, LA,CA on Saturday, October 15, 2011

I've owned this TV now for about 2 years and it's the best HDTV I've owned to date (and have new models in other rooms). The picture quality is amazing, tons of inputs and just nothing bad to say. We've got a 55" LCD LED 3D in the bedroom and a 42" in my sons room and none match the picture quality, even being newer sets (one Sony the other Samsung). The 61" is perfect, even though I remember wondering if I should have gone with the 67".

This model can still be found and the prices are in a nice sweet spot now (I paid ~$2K, it's down around $1200 now and worth every penny).

In comparisons to other TV's friends have in the same size (from Sony, Mitsub, etc) - when they see this model they all have buyers remorse. 1080p, 120hz, supports 3d... and at the current price, hard to beat that stick with a snake ;)

Crutchfield sold us a lemon

Written By dissatisfied, Northern VA on Thursday, November 19, 2009

After years as a more-than-satisfied Crutchfield car stereo customer, we decided to buy this TV from Crutchfield. We've owned the TV for 9 months, and the TV has had two part failures, each of which has prevented the TV from working for several weeks each.

When we notified Crutchfield of our problems, we were told: "... Unfortunately, that does not mean that all of [Samsung's] TVs will be trouble-free. The good news is that Samsung is able to take care of the problem for you under the TV's one year warranty."

My recommendation is not to pay the Crutchfield premium on TVs, because Crutchfield doesn't have the level of service and support that they do with car stereo equipment -- they'll just send you to the manufacturer to deal with the problem yourself.

By the way, my TV is currently still broken (3 weeks now) and we're waiting for a repeat visit from the repair company to replace the power supply.

[Editor's Note: We apologize for the problems you have encountered with your TV. Any repairs to your TV will be covered under your one year Samsung warranty.]

Great product for the price

Written By Edge, Lebanon, PA on Tuesday, February 17, 2009

So far I have no complaints about the set itself. Picture in HD is absolutely fantastic-clear-sharp-detailed-vivid colors. Difference between LCD and this DLP is a warmer picture. LCD has a brighter, sharper bite to its picture, but the DLP has warmer appearance and would be much better on the eyes at this size than LCD especially during longer viewing. The cost is quite less than the 46" Sony and Toshiba LCD I was eyeing. And for the cable signal, I wasn't gaining any advantage over the DLP. Bigger screen, several hundred less, same options - no brainer. Delivery was in and out the door in 3 minutes flat - unpacked and placed on the stand - the rest I wanted to do! Audio lacks any type of base-but produces well aside from that. Movies, and HD programming are fantastic and quickly remind me how glad I am I dropped the LCD notion. However - standard cable with non-HD programming tends to appear grainy-blotchy and fuzzy around close-up shots. This is NOT a DLP drawback, but rather poor broadcast by the networks, courtesy of your local cable/dish provider to get you hooked on paying for HD programming! Options are plenty for customizing picture and sound. No bulb is a HUGE advantage for long term maintenance, using LEDs instead, producing very little heat. I am very pleased with the sets capabilities and no regrets buying this over an LCD, as well as completely stunned a DLP can produce such a fantastic picture in HD at this size.

Biggest Bang For Your Buck

Written By Titus, Lincoln, NE on Tuesday, February 17, 2009

This tv is BIG. Upgrading from a 27" CRT to this 61" DLP was way overdue. I still need to hook up an HD 1080p source, but even regular DVDs look great on this television. Crutchfield has excellent customer service. I will definately be buying more home theater equipment from Crutchfield. The white glove delivery was the icing on the cake.

Beautiful set..Great price

Written By Ed, Cortland N.Y. on Monday, February 16, 2009

Received my set in about 4 days, the white glove delivery was excellent. They said they had been delivering a lot of these sets (there was another one on the truck). They even helped me take my old 32" CRT to the garage. After looking longingly at it, one of the deliverymen was going to try to buy one for himself. You can't beat the cost per value.
Right out the box the picture looked beautiful. I let it run about five hours then adjusted the "movie mode" using the Avia Home Theater set up DVD. Now the picture is near perfect! I would HIGHLY recommended anybody that owns this set to adjust it using such a disc if your not going to get it professionally calibrated. It will make a good set look GREAT!
My only complaint is the vertical viewing angle, thought that is common to rear projectors and I new that before I bought it. I did tilt the whole set, as my present stand is a little taller than it should be, and that helped until I can get a lower stand for it. After watching the little HDTV that is available from my local Time Warner cable (30 channels), I can't help wondering why every channel is not in HD.
I would highly recommend this set to anybody, if you can find it. With the LED lamp I look forward to many years of use. I can't say enough about Crutchfields as a company and all the staff. I have used them for years and have never had a complaint.

happy with purchase

Written By Jeff, Long Island, NY on Monday, February 16, 2009

First off, if you don't already know, Crutchfield customer service is great. I got my TV quickly at a good price, and they were sure to check up to see how everything was going.

I'm pretty impressed with the TV itself. The HD picture looks great. It works well with our seating setup, but as others have mentioned, the off-angle viewing is poor. That includes vertical angle too.

Basically, if you're looking for a big screen, have the right seating arrangement, and don't need to hang the TV on your wall, this TV is a no brainer?
