The PN64F8500 is not only Samsung's top 64" plasma for 2013, it's part of the finest plasma TV series the company has ever built. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, while OLED and 4K TVs were grabbing the headlines, the F8500 series was definitely the most talked about "real world" TV. When our photo sample arrived and we had some time to play with it, the verdict was unanimous: It's the best plasma picture we've ever seen.
We love plasma TVs anyway for their deep black levels, fluid motion and wide viewing angles. But plasmas generally aren't as bright as LED TVs, so we haven't always recommended them for rooms with lots of light. The PN64F8500 uses Samsung's new Super Contrast Panel, which is 250% brighter than last year's panel. It also produces incredibly deep black levels. Colors don't just pop off the screen, they explode.
How did Samsung do it? They reduced the thickness of the cell walls in every pixel, allowing more light to pass through. That, combined with a nanocarbon anti-glare filter, delivers the picture quality advantages of plasma and adds LED-like brightness.
Each pixel in a plasma screen has red, green, and blue cells. Samsung's F8500 panel has thinner cell walls, allowing the screen to produce a brighter, more colorful picture.
The PN64F8500 is one of Samsung's smartest Smart TVs ever thanks to a 1.35GHz quad-core processor. That's more horsepower than most tablets have, so besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Along with built-in apps for services like Netflix®, Hulu Plus™, and YouTube™, you can download new ones from Samsung's large selection of apps.
Samsung's AllShare™ Play lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you have a Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the PN64F8500. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like toss photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.
Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's free Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the PN64F8500's screen on your Galaxy S3 phone or tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind. It's like whole-house television you can hold in your hand.
The Samsung PN64F8500 delivers a spectacular picture in 2D or 3D. Just slip on a pair of the included active glasses to enjoy a deeper view, and not just with true 3D video sources — switch on the TV's 2D-to-3D conversion for added depth with regular 2D video. And even if you're not interested in 3D this set still deserves consideration if picture quality is your number one priority. The PN64F8500 offers the richest, most vivid colors and the deepest black levels this side of OLED.
If you're into picture quality, and you want a cinema-like home viewing experience, you owe it to yourself to check out plasma for your next TV. Plasma holds the edge when it comes to smooth motion and rich colors high-def movies and TV shows look effortlessly real. Plasma's superior picture contrast and deep black levels are best enjoyed in rooms without a lot of windows or lamps, where you can dim or darken the lights.
PN64F8500 was called the flagship Plasma for a reason, it is incredible. please do not fall for the 4K stuff. those as all of you are aware are tightly packed 4 times the pixels but if you are sitting at any decent distance , you will not (and yes can not physiologically) tell the pixels apart. what distance/ screen size then u ask, well, there's plenty of online forums with graphs and charts for that purpose. 3D is decent, yes active and yes u will never use it. I had bought and returned the Sony KDLW850, the Samsung 8550 and Sony XBR X900 before getting this beast. why? no I didnt do it for fun but for image quality reasons well known to all of us (banding, clouding, ghosting and other -ings) which have way too many confusing names but stem from LED's impossible task of achieving absolute blacks (unless u go full array .. and good luck with that). if u can dish out the money for the sony X950 (full array LED), good for u, otherwise the PNF8500 is superior to every single LCD/LED out there. yes even if its 4K or 8K , please dont get me started on that again. and yes even those with software based, hardware based, google based and Tim Cook based local dimmings, which just doesnt and couldnt match up. Crutchfield customer service & delivery , top notch as always... almost too fast if you live here in NC. wont even get to change your mind once u order it. Bottom line: if u want to wait for bigger OLEDs, may the force be with you , but until then, get this if u can. period.
Pros: remarkable true blacks, superior contrasts expected from a top notch plasma. brighter than most LEDs reflections are surprisingly minimal (matter of fact less reflective than the samsung 8550 and the sony KDL) media hub/ smart functions etc are decent.
Cons: expensive, yes. but worth it. may not be available for much longer, because they need to create a market for the OLEDs.
This is an excellent TV. Too bad they won't be making them anymore. Plasma is the King. I've had a 50" Pioneer Elite plasma TV for ten years and haven't had any problems with burn-in. When I saw this TV at a reduced price I didn't think twice. The picture quality and true colors are superb. The menus are very easy to follow and use. The larger screen size makes a big difference. It feels like you are actually in the audience watching the show on the stage. Having access to Netflix, Amazon, etc., in one remote is a plus. I also really like the stand so I don't have to install the TV on the wall.
Pros: Picture quality and vibrant and real colors. Excellent brightness. Reduced price. Nice Apps. Nice Remote.
Cons: The picture gets darker if viewed from the top or bottom of TV but this is not a big problem for me. No component video.
Picture is unmatched. I have it connected to an extneral AVR to handle sound.
Pros: Picture, Picture, Picture
Cons: When streaming Netflix the sound output from TV to AVR is not 5.1 (maybe my fault but can't seem to find a workaround. Slight buzzing sound but my understanding is that standard for Plasmas. These are minor compared to the MOVIE THEATRE feel of the picture!.
After scratching the screen on my 50" kuro, I was in the market for a replacement. I tend to buy the best quality available. For TVs, that would mean buying a huge OLED TV (which I considered doing). But at $20k+, I decided that would be stupidly impulsive (which hasn't stopped me before, but, thankfully, it did this time!).
Enter the Samsung 64" plasma.
Couldn't be happier with this set. The picture is so good it almost makes some images look fake (surreal). I like the larger size and while I ultimately intend to wall mount it (in the middle of building an addition, this will be mounted when its complete), I am currently using the very stylish stand. Overall, quite pleased and I am considering getting one of the smaller ones for the master bedroom.
I had zero issues with shipping.
Pros: Excellent picture quality (which, let's face it, is the reason people are buying this tv). Remote is cool, though I don't really use it for anything other than turning the TV on/off (have not had time to program my universal)
Cons: Not a fan of having to select the current source every time you turn on the TV in the UI. Would prefer to pull up the Samsung show recommendations screen on demand, not by default, Perhaps there is a setting to make the picture show full screen (vs, playing in a window until you select it) by default. I need to look in the guide . . .
This television has a fantastic picture! It performs very well in our very bright living room. It also has outstanding off-angle viewing. It has lots of features and an intuitive setup. Shipping left a lot to be desired. Crutchfield advised that the shipping company would call for delivery. They sent a tracking number, which I used for arranging someone to help me get it inside and assembled (over 100 lbs. boxed). Unfortunately it was delivered two days after stating "out for delivery".
Pros: Simply outstanding picture in HD. It can be viewed in a very bright environment and the sound is actually better than I was expecting.
Cons: The auto-brightness (ECO feature) needed to be turned off due to dimming too low, even in a very bright room. Once off it worked well. No component video input, but I knew that prior to purchase. Puts out a lot of heat!
Easy setup, need two people. GREAT picture. Remote is easy to use and intuitive. When I turn on my Blu Ray, the input automatically switches to that source. Use of the wireless keyboard is nice, but it doesn't carry over to the set top box.
Pros: picture, ease of use
Cons: price. lack of component video inout
Looking to upgrade from a 46" Viore plasma TV, I did much research between various HDTV's (plasma and LED) for a number of months before making a purchase. Looking at various reviews, TV specs, etc, I finally settled for this product. So far I am impressed with the TV. Great picture and brightness. The blacks are exceptional. Impressed with the clarity and crispness along edges of fast moving objects especially while watching sports. I have not tapped into all the available functions but look forward to learning them. Looking forward to football season.
Pros: Great picture Exceptional clarity Brightness in lighted room are exceptional blacks are exceptional
Cons: Expensive but was worth it
One of the best detail and color available .... stunning blacks, sharp detail with outstanding color balance. Take time to calibrate... you will be pleased and rewarded with outstanding picture quality!
Well I wanted a Plasma for the picture quality and true color mixed with fast action sports viewing.
The color is awesome. The TV when off looks beautiful. The menu's are kinda understandable. The remote is beautiful (the alum one) but is very limited. The 2nd one it comes with is very usable.
It does Dish guide thru the TV, not box, if you so wish, but you cant hide non HD channels so you get 2 of every channel.
The ability for it to control my other devices thue the TV remotes, is very nice.
I would have done a 60" but was told they likely would not be back in and discontinued, so I did the 64". Come to find out they got a stocking order of 60" models a few weeks later. Oh well, this thing is huge and fits nicely in my build in wall unit.
Iam still learning but it has a great picture and cannot watch my pionner elite pro150 50'' Istill have to learn all the features.
Cons: i cannot think of any i just love this plasma from samsung
I have to say this TV was all everyone said it would be!!! I have it in a super bright living room with windows everwhere. The blacks are super black and the colors are beyond great... One tiny issue is the voice command does show up from time to time without prompting it... As for other issues like humming or some other crazy things other people have described are non existent with this one... Crutchfield was great from beginning to the end and I will definitely buy my next tv from them in the future.
Pros: The TV is frigging beautiful and I opted to us the stand just because I've never seen one so creative. . The picture is outstanding and the colors are so vibrant it looks like you could touch the screen and your fingers would get wet.
Cons: Voice command pops up Un prompted and doesn't work anyway.
Although my first model shipped was defective, Crutchfield had a replacement out to me the next day. Picture quality is excellent. Smarthub is pretty cool for streaming. I use the Plex app often and everything works great.
Pros: Picture. Apps. Streaming.
Cons: The secondary remote is difficult to use. Price is higher than others in this category.
The TV is a little spendy by it's extremely nice. We are using it in an area where there are a lot of windows and the Plasma is bright enough to still our perform any LED.
Pros: Excellent picture quality Fast delivery Easy to setup SMART functionality is pretty cool
There's truly nothing bad that can be said about this television. The "Sammy" replaced another Samsung Plasma (PN63C8000) that had served us well until a panel failure. Knowing that Panasonic and others had already abandoned Plasma I was concerned as to whether we should stay with the same technology that had served us well until that point. I'm glad that we did. One thing I must advise is that upon setup, I turned off the motion/camera ability and completely abandoned the home "apps" screen. For me, I'm interested in one thing with a TV of this size- picture quality/performance. The picture on this TV is so vivid, so bright, and the dark colors really pop as well. Overall, the quality is better than what I've seen in alot of LED's and some reviews have likened the same to what is presently offered in OLED technology for alot less money. Turned off the TV speaker so I can't attest as to sound quality on the set, and one thing to note is that Samsung is now including an IR remote along with their Bluetooth-enabled remote for those of us who are Harmony users where programming is a breeze. The only critique I have is that Samsung should have offered a "stripped" version of this set which eliminated all of the apps and "smart" features that some of us can do without- after all, isn't that why we have IPADS? Finally, a word of caution- with the hip new stand comes a TV that sits relatively low off of the console. Check your center channel speaker height!
Pros: Picture quality, ability to really show bright and dark colors without fail, ease of use/programming.
I purchased this TV to replace a 58' Samsung 7000 Series Plasma that had the panel go bad. For financial reasons, I initially tried the Vizio M Series 70' inch LED but wasn't happy with the picture quality. I decided to return it and pony up the extra 1k to get this Samsung Plasma. I'm extremely happy I made the change and it was well worth the money. The picture quality (great colors and deep blacks) is the best I've ever seen on a TV. 3D is excellent with very little blurring or ghosting.
Pros: Outstanding 2D and 3D picture quality, colors pop off the screen and I've been able to see more detail in dark scenes then on any other TV. The TV itself has excellent build quality and looks very slick mounted on the wall. The voice command is a nice touch as is the Samsung SmartHub and built in Camera. My wife and I use the camera for Skype.
Cons: Gesture Control is pretty useless.
so far so good. great picture. easy to set up.
Pros: awesome picture. lots of apps. voice recognition really accurate.
Cons: price. remote not the best for my cable. but just got free remote in mail today maybe it will be better.
My major concern with buying a new TV was how it was going to look in my living room that was very bright. I knew I wanted a plasma and had narrowed my selection down between this one and the 2 top rated Panasonics. I went with the Samsung because of the brightness. In a room with many windows, this TV shines. In my opinion, it gives you all of the greatness of a plasma, but also allows you to put it in a bright room where normally you would want an LED TV. I did tweak the picture manually to my liking instead of using one of the preset options.
Besides that it is just too cool with all of it's smart features. It has voice recognition, a camera on top of the TV, internet browsing just to name a few.
I actually like the remote. It's compact and reminds me of a smart phone. The manual isn't the greatest.
I got a good deal on the TV over Black Friday, but prices will probably be dropping in the next month when the big companies start rolling out their new line up.
Well worth the $3000 spent. Would buy it again. Overall great TV!
Pros: Picture quality for a plasma in a bright room. The brightest plasma that you can buy!
Cons: The manual and for me setting it up to use the smart features.
A fine plasma type TV. I knew a sacrifice was being made for viewing in a well lit room but the sacrifice was much greater than expected. I already have a Samsung LED TV and wish I'd gone for another.
Pros: Good solid TV all functions aok. If viewed in a completely darkened room it great.
Cons: Poor picture quality in a room with table top ambient light. This is the first time after many years as a Crutchfield customer that I ordered installation by their recommended installer. The installers were fine but setting them up was extremely irritating and time costly. I called the # provided over the phone for Crutchfield's approved installer to come out and evaluate the installation and specify the equipment to be ordered and installed.
I chose this TV because of the room conditions in my living room are bright with about 20' in lenght of windows on one wall. I wanted a TV that could combat the brightness yet provide great color accuracy and black level. So far I am very happy with this product.
Pros: Great screen quality Great brighness Great color accuracy Great Black level Remote works with PS3 and dish hopper out of box
Cons: Remote does not have numbers so it is a little annoying to use
The picture quality is remarkable, compared to two other Samsung 60+ TVs that I have purchased in the last few years. However, the other TVs are quite good; the PN64F8500 has a sharpness and brightness that make images spectacular. There are so many bells and whistles that I wonder if I shall be able to master the majority of them. The voice control option pops up on my screen even when I don't access or request it. This can be very annoying. I am waiting to receive the Smart Touch Control which was not included in the packaging. Hopefully, this will allow me to have a better handle on this issue.
Pros: Picture quality
Cons: The manual is absolutely terrible. The new features of motion control, voice recognition and face recognition are so new that one may have thought there would have been more detailed explanations and operation than is included in this poor excuse for a manual. I have not looked at all the videos that you can get online yet. I would prefer having a real manual to go along with this very expensive set.
Beautiful TV, best picture on the market, I own 2 Panasonic VT's and chose the F8500 over the New Panasonic ZT because of the brightness of the picture compared to the ZT, plus it doesn't hurt that it one the HDTV shoot out.
Pros: Picture, technology, styling
Room must be too dark to get good picture. Too many bells and whistles. "Extended IR and built in camera are nonsense. The "free" 29 inch LCD is a much better TV. The package was way over priced. I'm going to try and sell it and cut my losses.
Cons: Room must be too dark to get a decent picture. Too many bells and whistles. "Extended IR and built-in camera are nonsense. The "free" 29 inch LCD is a much better TV. The package was way over priced. I'm going to try and sell it and cut my losses.
Great plasma tv with excellent picture and easy to set up. So far the best tv I've ever owned!
Pros: Great picture!
Cons: none so far
Purchased the Samsung PN64F8500 about 2 months ago to replace an old Samsung DLP TV. I picked it almost solely based on picture quality and haven't been disappointed. It's a stark difference from my old TV, no surprise there, but I'm particularly impressed by the clarity when watching movies and really anything in HD. Black levels and contrast are also excellent. Like other reviewers I find the speakers to be a disappointment, but I use it with a home theater sound system so don't really mind. I have yet to try the motion control but the voice control seems clunky and I could do without it. The curved base is unique and looks great, although it makes it difficult to find a TV stand that's wide enough since the stand is the full width of the TV.
Pros: Picture quality, styling
Cons: Speakers, voice control
See pros and cons. I consider myself an expert in audio/video technologies but I'm not a professional in that industry. This TV delivers BIG on the video side of house and I had no problem giving it 5-stars there. Howeever, as stated in virtually every forum and review across the web the audio is sub-par. I replaced a 2006 era 63" Samsung plasma with this unit which had a great multi-speaker sound bar built-in (maybe 15w output...it was GREAT!) The built-in system on this TV is total JUNK. I guess the design intent was to spend all the focus dollars on Video (which is evident) but for everyday TV watching and even movies where you don't want a full component audio system burning up electricity...the audio needs some serious rework! My opinion of the touch "swipe" remote differs from some other reviewers...I think it's GREAT, compact and easy to learn (for the whole family) and I like some of the future proofing they did with this TV (the evolution module.) Given, it's not an ipod touch or harmony remote in it's capabilties but I wasn't expecting that. Overall the TV is awesome due to picture quality and simply juicy visuals satisfying even the most critical viewer.
Pros: Gorgeous picture, updated feature set and apps, fast and consistent network performance, sleek design & "futuristic" appeal
Cons: Horrible audio subsystem; pricey
Nice TV, great picture, awesome feature except, the remote leaves a lot to be desired. A remote extender has to be utilized to control a cable box, DVD player, etc . . . When your TV is mounted elevated on the wall with all the cables routed internal to the house walls and your equipment is in a remote cabinet you have a choice. Run the remote extender cable down your wall in plain sight when every other cable in your system runs internal to the wall or use multiple remotes. Cheesy remote design on a $3200.00 TV, I expected more. Crutchfield technical support had no solution.
Pros: Nice design and picture
Cons: Poor remote capability
After adjusting the picture settings this is everything I could have hoped for. Watched my first 3 d with 7.1. The Gaurdians. Unbelievable. I can't imagine going to the movies again.
Pros: Picture quality with or without 3 D
Cons: It will take a while to learn all the gadgets. Picture doesn't look that great right out of the Box. Looks like it has a smoke screen. If you switch to dynamic it is too bright. I went to c/net and made all recomended adjustments . If you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself then pay someone. It will be worth every penny.
This is the best plasma money can buy. I searched months for the right tv led or plasma?? that was the big question. I currently own a Samsung pn63c7000 plasma and let me tell you the picture detail, color, brightness, and sharpness is night and day. Although the pn63c7000(which I purchased at crutchfield 4 years ago) is still a very good quality picture it does not compare to the 64f8500. The brightness, color, and off angle viewing are amazing. Almost purchased the Samsung LED un65f8000 but in a side by side comparison the off angle viewing of would not work for me. The LED washed out considerable. I made the right decision and crutchfield is great to deal with always helpful.
Cons: none so far
I have had the TV for about a month and I have to say that the picture quality is just amazing. I struggled between the Samsung 65" LED (preferred for looks) and this tv (wins for picture quality) and am glad I chose the plasma. Regular HD tv takes on a realism (Breaking Bad) and 3D content just pops (Avatar, Hugo, Open Season 2) with amazing clarity and sharpness. Definitely check out the opening sequence of Paris in Hugo and the initial pan into the train station. The glasses supplied are active so they do need a battery. There are numerous discussions on active vs. passive online, but for me these glasses were light weight, easy to setup and did not cause any headaches during a 3hr movie (Avatar). The TV works well in a room with lots of natural light unlike older plasma's. I did change the picture settings based on http://www.digitaltrends.com/tv-reviews/samsung-pn64f8500-review/ and these worked well for me. The touch panel remote takes a little getting used. I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between this TV and a 4K TV at a viewing distance of 7ft or more.
Pros: Picture quality, features
If you are looking for a Plasma TV that has a fantastic picture in a dark or bright room? This is the TV for you. Blue-ray movies in 1080p on this TV WOW! CNET calibration values for this TV are GREAT!
Pros: Picture Quality. WOW!
Cons: Motion and voice recognition is limited. TV stand is cool but the TV is not real stable with the stand.
Upgraded from a 55' samsung LED to the 64' plasma, the difference in brightness is noticeable.I find it comparable to my LED during the day ,but at night in a dark room, the picture really looks good on the plasma( colors and blacks).I only gave it 4 stars because the voice recognition and camera control are hit and miss, plus the ARC function won't work with my denon receiver.
Pros: Picture Size 3d
Cons: ARC don't work Voice recognition and camera controls are hit and miss
Impressive picture, numerious features, picture brightness enhances viewing pleasure.
Pros: Great picture, light weight, extensive features.
Cons: "Smart" remote is a challenge for some of us to operate (thank goodness for the cable remote).
I wanted a high quality, big plasma, and this one definitely qualifies. I was also looking at the high end Panasonic units, but for the extra money I did not see a clear improvement. I like the brighter picture of the Samsung, and my wife definitely preferred the brighter look. Since we have it in a room with windows, I think it is also a better TV for daytime vieiwing in our house.
The buying experience with Crutchfield was, as usual, painless. Arrived within 5 days and was easy to get set up and running. Still learning the ins and outs of all the features (a better manual would help), but very happy wihout using all the bells and whistles - of which there are many.
Pros: Great picture - state of the art. Bright - maybe giving up some blacks/shadow detail, but I don't miss it.
Cons: Needs a better manual. I like paper, not online tutorials.
After reviewing and debating over plasma and led .i purchased this model plasma. I have to say ,great picture, and the 3d movies on this tv will knot your socks off. The 64 inch is just the right size for the family room .
Pros: Best picture I have ever seen.
Cons: Although the remote is cool looking and works as should,, I am going to use a harmony remote for one touch start up of my system
There is no way possible to connect either analog speakers or headphones to this TV. Only digital Toslink output. This totally kills any plan to use your existing sound system or and headphones for people with hearing problems. You can purchase a VERY EXPENSIVE converter for this, however.
Pros: Perfect otherwise.
Cons: No external analog audio! A biggie!
Outstanding picture! I haven't been through all the features as yet, but so far, so good. I'm not a "tequie" but I am thoroughly satisfied with this purchase to date. "Up and running" is a breeze, HDMI makes connections as simple as possible, wi-fi works great, picture is like sitting in the same room as subject, I just wish all channels would utilize full 16:9 at all times (no fault of Samsung). Thanks to Crutchfield all my questions were answered during purchase process. I'm looking forward to experiencing all the features this product offers.
Pros: Picture, sound, ease of set-up and use.
Cons: On the expensive side, but if you want new technology, you pay for it.
This 64" F8500 is my 1'st plasma tv and is the best picture I have personally seen in a large screen model. As with the tv I purchased from Crutchfield in 2004, I was able to choose a model with the help of an adviser based on the type of entertainment I was looking for. I like the whole movie experience including the best picture in 2D and 3D available. The 64F8500 seamed to be a good match. After properly installing my new Samsung, my expectations were exceeded. Basic screen choices, vivid to easy on the eyes would allow me to place this tv any where I want in my home. My favorite is cinema. The pureness of the blacks and whites are incredible. The 3D viewing was great too. The depth in 3D mode is amazing also. But the real surprise was the ability of this tv to take on any added special 3D pop out of the screen effect the movie maker can produce! For example, while watching a cable on demand 3D movie.a scene in A Dolphins Tail where two children were flying a model helicopter, surprised me when it flew out the screen, past the right side of my head, then from behind me back into the screen! I cant wait to see what Blue-ray can do with this. The burn in protection Samsung uses gives me peace of mind in this area. Its hard to burn pixels that are moved around periodically. New audio settings like Clear Voice allows you to hear dialogue without background noise or music drowning it out. The Smart Hub is fun too. I talk to it the same as I do my smart phone.
Pros: A new plasma design with a bright sharp screen. The biggest bang for the buck for today's real world tv. A quad core processor, that allows you to multitask while watching tv. Perfect for great cinematic experience seekers.
Cons: None yet.
Okay, I went from a 27' screen that I had bought in 1983. To a 64'. What can I say but wow! I don't really watch that much t.v. Or movies, But I think I will be from now on. Friends of mine say that it looks better than their older xbr's. I'm still overwhelmed by the clarity of the picture from some of the older movies that I have. I truly gives a me a sense of space in the back ground of the movies. Thank you Crutchfield.
Pros: Every thing!
Cons: For a troglodyte like my self this is a very steep learning curve.
This TV is amazing. After going through 2 of the 8000 series LED's and dealing with the black vertical band and corner bleeding issues, this was a relief to get what seems to be a great TV. We were advised by several to avoid plasma's because of our bright room, but this TV has far less glare than the LED's we returned. It is pricey, but so far it has blown our mind with the picture quality and all it can do with the 3D and apps!
Pros: picture, features
Cons: none so far
I exchanged my new PN64E8000 for this new F8500. I was very satisfied with the E8000, but I like the latest and greatest, and I was still under the 60 day satisfaction guaranteed for the E8000. This F8500 picture quality is amazing, much better than the high quality E8000. The user interface is slightly better, but the picture quality is why I made the exchange, it was well worth the extra expense and trouble.
Pros: amazing picture quality
Intial reaction to this TV is it is the best picture quality I have ever seen all around. Everything has it's strengths and weaknesses but this unit will not dissappoint. I love the bright-vibraint screen of Samsung's LED-LCD's but their 65" 8000 series LED was a huge disappointment with uneven screen lighting and bleeding. The 8500 truly does bring all of the things I like about the LED's with no bleeding or banding and the colors and black levels are amazing.
3D is also amazing with no flicker like I experienced with the 8000 series LED.
I was a little hesitant to go with plasma but thus far I am so glad that I did...you get all of the benefits of plasma with vibrant colors and great black levels with LED like screen brightness. Finally, a product that lives up to the marketing hype! What more can I say...keep you all posted.
Pros: Picture quality, brightness, contrast, color and black levels and gorgeous cabinet
Cons: None so far...suprisingly

Super Contrast Panel: The Samsung F8500 series Plasma TV's new Super Contrast Panel delivers incredible brightness, contrast, and clarity. Larger Red/Green/Blue sub-pixel color areas within the panel create a picture that rivals LED-LCD TVs for brightness. To further improve the already impressive picture, the Super Contrast Panel combines two key innovations for enhanced black levels and color reproduction
Clear Image Technology: The Samsung F8500 series Plasma TV employs two advanced Clear Image technologies which help eliminate blurring caused by off-axis viewing or fast motion video.
Cinema Smooth Plus: Movies are shot at 24 fps (frames per second); Cinema Smooth Plus is a refined playback process of 24p movies from Blu-ray and Satellite TV sources that accurately converts and displays content originally shot on film at 24fps as compared to the 30fps of DVD and Blu-ray disc. This allows for smoother motion scenes when watching sources shot at the standard movie rate of 24fps.
HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.
1080p Resolution: The Samsung F8500 series Plasma TV displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The television's HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.
HDMI (MHL) Port: The HDMI 4 port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 4 (MHL) port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Samsung TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 4 port. To find MHL-certified devices, go to www.mhlconsortium.org.
Full HD 3D (via HDMI 1.4): The Samsung F8500 series Plasma TV offers Full HD (1080p) 3D capability. Samsung 3D TV utilizes Bluetooth-enabled active shutter glasses (two pair included) for a full 1080p 3D viewing experience when coupled with a 3D source, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player or an HD 3D broadcast from satellite or cable providers (connected via HDMI 1.4). The Samsung F8500 series Plasma TV automatically adjusts the overall picture to provide an optimal 3D effect. The Samsung 3D TV also offers a unique feature that allows you to intensify your 2D viewing experience by up-converting it to virtual 3D. In addition, you can adjust the overall 3D perspective (+/-5) and overall 3D image depth (1-10). Samsung 3D TV supports Full HD 3D for 1920 x 2205p (24Hz) or 1280 x 1470p (60Hz) video signals; and virtual 3D for 1920 x 1080p (24/30/60Hz), 1920 x 1080i (60Hz), or 1280 x 720p (60hz) video signals. The Samsung F8500 series Plasma TV offers various 3D modes to match your 3D viewing needs.
Note: 2010 Samsung IR 3D glasses and3D glasses from other manufacturers are not compatible. Some 3D modes may not be available depending on the format of the image source. PIP, Auto Program, and some Picture Adjustment functions will also be disabled in 3D mode.

Samsung's 3D Active Glasses (SSG-5100GB) offer a comfortable fit through its lightweight frame and flexible noise- and ear-pieces. The Samsung 3D Active Glasses are powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium coin-type battery (pre-installed). The battery can last up to 150 hours when powered on. The Samsung's 3D Active Glasses provide a viewing range between 6.5' and 19.5' from the Samsung 3D-ready TV.
Note: If the 3D glasses move outside of the recommended operating distance, the signal from the TV will be disconnected and the display of the 3D glasses will turn off after several seconds. If you lie on your side while watch TV with 3D glasses, the picture may look dark or may not be visible. When viewing 3D video under fluorescent lighting (50-60Hz), you may notice a small amount of screen flickering.

Audio Extras: The Samsung TV offers a variety of audio adjustments to meet your listening needs.
Digital Audio (Dolby Digital/DTS compatible): The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM.The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, and USB ports on the LED-LCD TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo or a matrixed 5.1ch signal (DTS Neo 2.5) from sources connected to the TV via HDMI orRCA.
ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4 enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB port can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.
Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 3 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.
SoundShare: The TV is compatible with the SoundShare feature found on some Samsung Crystal Surround AirTrack active speaker systems (sound bars). SoundShare makes a wireless connection between the TV and the speaker system via Bluetooth. Once the two are paired, you can control the volume and mute the sound by using the remote control from the TV or the speaker system. If you change the AirTrack from TV mode to another mode or turned off, the TV audio will resume playing from the TV's speakers. No the voice system is not that great.. [ LUKE G Jun 03, 2014 ]
Don't know, never tried it. Turned my voice command off, it's to lose to my center speaker. [ WALTER May 30, 2014 ]
Can't remember-I pretty much stopped using the voice commands-they're useless [ KENNETH May 29, 2014 ]
I have not tried this yet. [ Richard May 29, 2014 ]
I do not use these controls. [ LAURANCE May 29, 2014 ]
not yet [ WILLIAM May 30, 2014 ]
I have not tried the voice commands as of now. [ DONALD May 29, 2014 ]
The guy who helped us install the TV said that voice command should work. But we haven't tried to do that yet. [ Edward May 29, 2014 ]
I wasn't aware that this television potentially has this feature, so I don't know. However, I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing about this tv that I don't like. It was definitely the right choice and has a phenomenal picture, in a bright room or a dark room. I contemplated getting an Ultra HD tv, but I'm waiting for the prices to still come down more. I am not disappointed that I bought this Plasma Screen tv instead. [ Karey May 29, 2014 ]
This set has the capability via the touch remote, but it is not the best implementation. It only works sporadically. I've had better luck using a Harmony remote to coordinate power on/off, input, volume control. [ Steven May 29, 2014 ]
I have not used the voice command and really don't plan on using it. I knew before I purchased the TV that the technology for the voice command option was not very good. Using a remote control is a pretty simple basic function for me. The TV overall, I am very pleased with it. [ KENNETH G May 29, 2014 ]
Hello Tom, I don't think its possible. The voice commands triggers in only after switching on the TV. But, With Xbox One you can do that. ;) Thanks Raghu [ RAGHU May 29, 2014 ]

Yes it can be wall mounted. The bottom stand is shipped with the TV but not attached. So you have the option of using either. The wall mounting kit is sold separately. [ MICHAEL Apr 08, 2014 ]
Yes the Samsung PN64F8500 TV can be wall mounted. The bowed out piece on the bottom is the stand to use if you wish to mount the TV on a horizontal surface instead of a wall mount. [ Ronald Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes this tv can be wall mounted. In fact the stand isn't attached during shipping so wall mount installation should be simple (from the tv point of view). [ JARED Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes you can mount it on the wall.Tthe curve piece on the bottom, is only the stand. [ CARLOS Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes, it can be wall mounted. The bowed piece is the stand, that is installed only if you wish to locate the monitor on a flat surface. There are several the monitor can be mounted: wall mounted, cabinet integrated TV mount, wall shelving systems etc. If you choose to purchase the TV, know that a proper calibration is hugely rewarded. It is capable of remarkable sharpness, and deep, lush, liquid colors. I own one, and will be purchasing another for our master bedroom (my wife said she wanted one, or she would never let me rest :) ) Tip: wear cotton gloves when setting the set up; cleaning the screen is not a lot a fun, and should be done so minimally. Good luck, and I hope this helps. [ ROD Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes . The curve stand is removable. [ LUKE G Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes it can be removed [ WALTER Apr 07, 2014 ]
I have the TV mounted on the wall. You do not mount the TV on the "bowed" piece if you're going to mount the TV on the wall. [ LAURANCE Apr 07, 2014 ]
The bowed out piece is just the stand for the TV if you are going to put it on a TV stand. It can be removed and the TV can then be mounted normally. [ PATRICK Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes it is wall mountable. Just get a good bracket. Only thing with this tv is it gets hot. Other than that, it smokes my other high end Samsung LEDs. Freaking awesome tv. [ PAUL Apr 07, 2014 ]
The tv is wall mounted in my home. Very tight to wall. That bracket in picture is for standing on wall unit/ cabinet, etc. it isnt even on tv when it arrives. This is the very best picture I have ever had. I also own samsung 55 and 40" LED sets. It blows both of them away. Enjoy it. [ ROY T Apr 07, 2014 ]
Absolutely.Mine is wall mounted.That piece is removable [ KENNETH Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes. The TV comes with the curved base detached. When wall mounting you can simply not install it. [ WILLIAM P Apr 07, 2014 ]
that peice at the bottom is just the stand. which is removeable. mine is wall mounted. its an awsome tv. [ robert Apr 07, 2014 ]
Yes, that piece is removable. We have ours mounted on the wall and it looks awesome. It's a very slim TV. We get lots of compliments on it. We really love it and recommend it. [ Heather Apr 07, 2014 ]
I don't believe there is an audio out jack on the set. I have my set mounted on a wall. Even if there were an audio out jack on the back of the TV, it would be very difficult to connect a headset to it . I have my TV connected to my receiver and receive the sound into my 7.1 audio system. There is an audio out jack on the front of my receiver and I would imagine that all receivers will have this feature. [ SAUL Jan 19, 2014 ]
I don't believe so [ KENNETH Jan 19, 2014 ]
Don There is NO jack for headset. Would be nice if it had one. The only way it can work that I know of is if you pipe it thru a receiver set. Kind Regards Keith [ KEITH Jan 19, 2014 ]
NO [ LUKE G Jan 19, 2014 ]
Unfortunately,it does not. [ WILLIAM P Jan 19, 2014 ]
No, I plug my headset into my Marantz receiver which controls my surround sound for the TV and the receiver. [ JAMES ANSE Jan 19, 2014 ]
I do not believe there is a headphone jack but you can probably connect Bluetooth headphones to it. [ WILLIAM P Jan 19, 2014 ]
