Kick your home theater system into high gear with the Samsung BD-P1600. This player outputs video at "Full HD" 1080p resolution, for exceptionally vivid, lifelike images from high-definition Blu-ray Discs the best HD source available. You'll also enjoy master-quality surround sound, thanks to built-in decoding for "lossless" Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.
Netflix, Pandora, and other online options
If you're a fan of Netflix®, Blockbuster®, YouTube, or Pandora®, you can also use the 'P1600 to stream your favorite movies and music via your broadband Internet connection. Plug a 1GB thumb drive into either of the player's USB ports, and you can enjoy "BD-Live" potential bonus features ranging from online games to downloadable movie trailers. Add the optional Wi-Fi® adapter, and you can take advantage of the 'P1600's online capabilities without the mess and hassle of running Ethernet cable.
Play DVDs and CDs, too
In addition to playing Blu-ray discs, the 'P1600 handles just about any other disc you may have. Pop in a classic from your DVD collection, or enjoy your favorite music CD. It also plays home-burned discs, plus those filled with MP3 tunes and JPEG digital photos.
Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.
I love my Samsung TV, but this Blu-Ray player has been a disaster. After less than six months of fairly light use, it started refusing to play about two-thirds of the discs I tried in - all of which worked just fine in other machines in the house. The very brief warranty had already run out, of course, so now I'm stuck with it until I can save up for a new one (which will NOT be a Samsung).
On the positive side, it gets two stars instead of one because it did easily connect to the Internet and plays streaming Netflix with no problem. Which is a good thing because that's about all it does lately .....
Had a problem with another brand of player and exchanged it for this one and it
works great. Simple set up and it plays every disc that I put in it. Streaming
from Netflix works great as well. Very pleased.
This is a great little player for the buck. I've had it since the first of the year and it seems to work great. Some people don't like the little door cover, but I think it helps the player to become more aesthetically pleasing. We love it for Netflix, however, there are some Netflix movies that don't like it. It's only "hic-uped" on a couple of them. It's "hic-uped" on a couple of DVD's too, but turn it off and on again. . . no prolems after that. It's like any device with a processor, sometimes it needs to re-boot. We pared it with one of Samsung's 50" plasmas, so it was a great value and does and excellant job with Blu-rays. Thanks a lot CF!!! Who says there's no difference with 1080p? It's incredible. Would recommend it to anyone.
Overall this is a decent player and a good value for the money, but there are two annoying issues with it:
1) The remote is poorly designed. Sometimes the player has trouble receiving the signal from the remote and I have to repeatedly press the button to get it to respond. The layout of the buttons is also very poor and surprising for a Samsung product which are usually well-designed. When playing streaming Netflix in particular, trying to exit by to the main menu doesn't always work. There are three buttons which look like they should work, but it doesn't always do what you expect. The layout of these buttons is also very un-intuitive. For example, "exit" doesn't exit back to the Netflix main menu. Neither does "return" or "menu".
2) The video connectors are only HDMI and Component, which is fine in most cases, but I have an older Samsung DLP HDTV that needs the signal to be S-video or composite in order to pipe the audio out to the headphones for listening in bed. Therefore I can't use this player on that TV -- very disappointing because I like the Pandora access on this player and would like to listen to that in bed. It would have been nice to have included at least an S-video connection.
Bottom line: I don't know if I would buy this player again. I would start by looking for one with more video output connections, that also included the Netflix and Pandora (or Slacker) features I like.
I have this player and the P1590 player, both Samsung Blu-ray, and both are intermittent to where they wont send signal through HDMI cable to the TV. You get a black screen and no picture/sound to your TV 60-70% of the time. When new, they work fairly well, but after 90 days, watch out. They go downhill fast. Samsung won't acknowledge problems, want minimum or $85 to look at it. Go with Sony, Panasonic, Denon, Yamaha or others for Blu-ray. Samsung TV's can't be beat, but their dvd line is a joke.
We bought this mostly to be a compliment to the PN50B650 TV. It interfaces very nice
with Samsung TV's and I have yet to have any issues with the player after 3 months of
use. I will say that blueray disks take some time to load but I'm not sure if that's an
issue with this player or blue rays in general.
For the money, I don't think you can go wrong with this player.
Overall: This is a great Blu-Ray player because it not only plays BDs (obviously), but it
also has the Netflix & Blockbuster download features built-in, Pandora radio (which I
have come to LOVE), and you can watch YouTube videos if you want. These are extras
you wouldn't necessarily expect from a player in this price range. I've had this unit now
for a about a month and a half and haven't had any problems with it. Some people have
complained about the flip-down console cover on the front of the unit, but it does not
Furthermore, the 1080p upconversion of regular DVDs is quite good. In fact, sometimes
when I'm watching a regular DVD I feel like I'm watching a BD.
If you are new to Blu-Ray, I would suggest this as a player to consider.
I've owned this player for seven months. It won't play blu-ray discs any more. Still works for dvd, pandora and netflix. The warranty covers parts only after six months, so I just bought a ps3. I would recommend buying a ps3 over all players.
I received one of these units for a Christmas present, and liked it so much I bought a second one for the bedroom. The picture quality is fantastic compared to DVD and the streaming Netflix feature is amazing. Had it for about a month and so far nothing but good things to say.
I purchased this blu-ray player to go along with my Samsung LN37B650 HD LCD tv that I got from Crutchfield. Although my PS3 has a blu-ray player, I wanted a stand-alone one simply to say I had one. It plays blu-ray movies in full 1080P and will upconvert standard DVDs in full 1080P as well. Setup was easy and connecting to the Internet was easy as well. I first connected using my LAN DSL line, then I purchased the Samsung Wireless adapter. All I had to was go to Network Settings (just like on my HD tv), choose wireless, it automatically finds the network, enter the password, and you're on to Youtube, Pandora, Netflix, and Blockbuster. Plus, I can use its remote or my HD tv remote to control both the tv and the blu ray player. Very nice feature. Samsung is the best for a reason.
Great value, so far so good. The picture looks awesome and I love the streaming Netflix. I have only had it for about 1 1/2 months but it is a great addition to my home entertainment system!!!!
Ok Let me start off with first I love Electronics, and keeping up with all the latest news. This includes being a subscriber to many magaziens, and trolling forums and Web sites DAILY (No exageration). Saying that I read ALOT of bad things about this player that really scared me on this player, But on Black Friday there was an increadibal sale on it and Although I love high end electronics I just cant afford it. i have been dreaming of being in the BD club for a few years now and my Wife said I could get it. Come Christmas Morn I set it up, ran the update wich took around 30 minutes, and checked out all the things things this thing dose. You tub is awsome, block buster is nice and CHEAPER than COX on-demand, Havent tried Pandoria yet, and I'm allready an Netflix subscriber. I also bought My first BD- Harry Potter and the half blood prince. WOW, I have a 720p Plasma and have been useing my XBOX 360 as my DVD Player so I didnt expect too much of an improvement-BOY was I WRONG. The Picture was WAY better, Sound was MUCH better, I even made a point at useing the Remote to open and close the doore becuase of the bad things I read about, well mine works flawlessly. It's the BEST $$$ I've spent in a LONG time. I was going to save my money for another year and get a DENON 2010, I'm glad I didnt becuase I'm very satisfied.
Fast boot up and excellent picture quality. This is my first venture into
streaming to my tv and I couldn't be happier. Pandora is wonderful and set up in
only seconds. Netflix and YouTube would not connect to the internet at first.
After I turned the firewall off on my router everything works as promised. I
haven't rented a video from Blockbuster yet but the trailers are playing perfectly.
So far, so good. On the Amanzon review site there are horror stories of this player becoming a "brick" when you upgrade the firmware. I ran a patch cable to my Internet router and it asked to upgrade. My Crutchfield rep said it should not be a problem - and it wasn't. Start the upgrade and walk away - it took about a half hour. I came back and powered it back up and everything was still fine. It plays DVDs beautifully (only my 2nd day and I still haven't seen it play a Blue-ray). I have a Netflix service and it was simple to start streaming to this player and the TV. I have a 1.5Mb/s DSL service and was worried about the throughput - but it worked fine. Quality rating was like 6/10. It seems less than half of the Netflix movies are able to be streamed, but it's still a nice option. I'll still get discs in the mail, but this offers another choice. Still haven't looked into the Internet radio. So given these new features, and the quality of the picture, (I also bought a Samsung 40-B630 - amazing picture compared with my old Sony CRT), this seems like a good way to improve the quality and ease of entertainment.
I couldn't be happier with my new Samsung Blu-Ray player; Samsung has always been a name brand that I trust as I move into the realm of high-definintion and Blu-Ray I couldn't be more pleased with the performance of this particular player as well as it's convenient and entertainment enhancing factor! The Blockbuster, Pandora and Netflix features are wonderful and make deciding to stay in for a movie a brilliant and exciting experience! No more deciding what to see -- it's all at my fingertips!
While it does a respectable job playing DVDs and Blu-Rays, it has trouble with music CDs. Roughly 1/4 of my music CD collection won't play: The tray opens back up, saying "This disk can not be played" (BTW music CDs that I burned myself do play.) I exchanged the unit for another one. Same result. I tried using the online Samsung support, and tried what they recommended. Same result.
So in summary: Good for DVD; Bad Bad Bad for music CDs.
This is my first experience with a BluRay player, or Samsung for that matter. It's been great, and I'm only beginning to explore the features of this player. Picture quality is superb, remote is intuitive and set up was easy. Good value for the money and as always, Crutchfield support is the best ever when questions pop up.
This player is great! Hooked it up to my projector and it's outstanding. Love the USB Host on the back. I hooked up my digital camera and was able to project pictures from our family vacation right on the wall! Haven't hooked up the Internet connection just yet but am excited about the Pandora option - not a big Netflix user but plan to give that a shot also.
It's pretty good. No door probs at all; just use the remote. After inserting disc, I just gently push the tray and it closes fine. Did have probs with netfix stream and found after uncovering modem, which was very hot, it works with no prob- all the time.
Before I bought this player, I read the other reviews, but I'm not having
any of those problems. The door works fine, because I never open it by
hand. It opens and closes by itself, when I eject or insert the disc. The
display is fine because I don't read it, I read what it says on the TV. And
the remote works fine.
The only problems I have are: a slight popping noise comes through when
it's on the opening screen, and nothing is playing, and I wish my Internet
connection was better so I can enjoy Pandora and Netflix more. Netflix only
goes about an hour before the picture freezes and the player says my
connection is unstable. Pandora only lasts about 20 minutes.
Something is wrong somewhere, and I'm not sure it's my connection. I'm
using a wire, not wireless, and my computer on the same router says I
have a fine connection at 3Mbps. I've called Samsung, and all they could
do was have me reset the player. Like telling me to reboot my computer,
thanks for nothing, guys.
To make it worse, when this happens, I have to shut down and restart the
player. This does get old.
I'll get a faster connection as soon as it's available where I live. Until then,
I hope Samsung fixes the restart problem and the popping noise.
Overall, this is a good buy, but I'll be sure to keep my firmware updated.
This player came with my Samsung LED TV, and it's a newer model than my old Samsung BD-2500. It has definite improvements over the BD-2500, including faster loading of Blu-Ray discs. I'm not crazy about the flip-down door, but it's not enough of an annoyance to detract from the overall quality of the player. I also like the fact that I can use my RF remote from the LED TV with this player. I don't need a direct line of sight, which is good because it's hidden in a cabinet, and the IR doesn't work that well.
I use the streaming NetFlix and Pandora capabilities quite often, and I love having these features. The quality of both services are great. In fact, I tend to listen to Pandora more than my Sirius satellite. Great job, Samsung!
Oh, and I didn't have a problem at all with the firmware upgrade. Everything works perfectly on the player. I simply plugged it into my WAP via Ethernet, and I was good to go. It does say NOT to turn off the box during the upgrade process. I didn't. Perhaps people who had difficulties did that.
I like this unit, the audio and video quality are excellent, it seems to load fast, the menu interface is comparatively simple and intuitive. I agree that the flip-down door is unnecessary, it would be better without it, but it doesn't interfere with operating the unit. I don't use the front USB port, I usually eject disks with my remote, and the flip-down door doesn't add any time to the operation. I'm sure after a while I won't even notice it.
I asked a Crutchfield rep to recommend a player with good audio/video specs, a well designed interface and loading speed. I have an Ethernet connection to my A/V stack, so I don't have to worry about the wireless dongle. This was a good recommendation.
Networking was painless for me, it recognized my wired connection and downloaded the firmware update. I tested Netflix with HD and SD movies and they worked well, I couldn't tell the difference between the streams and a cable channel. (The Netflix Web site is poorly organized, but that's a different story.)
I would give it 5 stars but there some minor issues about blu-ray disks in general that keep me from being thrilled. These players should work with all blu-ray disks right out of the box without needing a network connection and regular firmware updates.
This BlueRay player plays well and integrates easily with my TV.
This is a blu ray deck with annoying features, starting with a very dim display, the weakest remote I've ever seen, and a flip down door that's just in the way.
BUT THAT'S JUST THE BEGINNING!
If you use the Netflix streaming USB dongle, the BP-1600 prompts you to update the firmware on the thing. THEN EVERYTHING STOPS WORKING!!!!! And Samsung wants me to pay to send it to them for repair - maybe?????
If you think this is a rare situation, just read some of the rating blogs on websites.
Love the Blu Ray, and especially the Netflix capability. Setup for this was a breeze. I haven't tried the Pandora yet, but have heard great things about it.
I agree with what previous reviewers have stated the audio and video quality is exceptional. Unlike the previous individual, the front door does not stay open when I close the tray. The key is to open the door enough to press the eject button and allow the door to contact the tray. If the remote is used to open and close the tray the door closes every time. Great product for the price!
Looking for an entry-level Blu-ray player around $300, I "test drove" a number of players from Sony and Panasonic first, but I was drawn to the Samsung Blu-ray players primarily because of the streaming Netflix feature. I was on the verge of buying a Samsung BD-P2500 when Samsung released their new models, so I waited to see what other reviewers had to say about them. Positive reviews of both the 1600 and 2600 clinched it for me, so now I've had my BD-P1600 for over a month, and I'm very pleased with my purchase. The Netflix streaming video works beautifully (I avoided the hassle of a wireless set-up by using Powerline ethernet adaptors that literally took five minutes to set up), and the picture and sound quality of both BD and SD discs are amazing. What especially impressed me was the fast load time for BD discs. It seemed to take nearly twice as long with the BD-P2500, and it was a common complaint among reviewers, so Samsung definitely improved their product in that sense. The only negative for me is the odd design choice of a plastic front panel, but that's a minor quibble when weighed against all the positives of this player.
I have a lot of Samsung products in my home. Generally, I think Samsung
makes excellent quality at reasonable prices. However, I was rather
disappointed with this unit (BD-P1600). While this BluRay player does offer
some very nice features it has several minor annoyances. The first thing you'll
notice is that the front panel needs to be opened in order to access the disc
tray. What you may not know is that the front flap doesn't automatically close
after the tray has been retracted. Also, the power buttons and all the function
buttons are hidden behind this flap. While having this panel is a nice idea it's
functionality leaves some to be desired.
The disc tray operation is also a little annoying. In order to close the tray you
need to either A) press the tray closed (I hate doing that cause I worry about
long-term damage to the motor). B) press the open/close button on the player.
C) press the eject/open button on the player remote. Just pressing the play
button will accomplish nothing.
The audio and video quality of this player work very well. I have this connected
to my Samsung plasma TV and it works great. The HDMI connection and setup
was extremely easy and straightforward. The netflix capability of this player
was what sold me on this model. On that aspect I haven't been
Pros: small footprint, easy setup, netflix streaming
Cons: nice looking but impractical front panel flap, no stand-by power indicator
I bought this for my room, thinking it was just another blue-ray player, but wow the quality is exceptional, and the pandora option is great. I highly recommend this player.
Although this is my first blu-ray player i've done extensive research on websites to have a good idea what to look for. This player is excellent! The picture quality is awesome, the menus are great and easy to navigate through. I've read a lot reviewers remarks about start-up time being long. To me it's really not that big of a deal. Only minor thing i'd like to change is to make it a little longer to sit nice and even atop my set-top box. Other than that, i would definitely recommend this blu-ray player.
Very nice player, very high quality. This player has completed my home theather set up, Yamaha tuner, and Samsung 40inch 6 series (other stuff as well) The Pandora option is FANTASTIC, thanks to Pandora for that program it's free and operates superbly, this player also opened up my Netflix, it really makes Netflix worth it, I called the cable co. and told them to pack sand with their high prices for some channels and content that I get through the player via Netflix. I do and have recommended this to my family and friends and now am sharing that recommendation with all of you. GREAT PLAYER!!!!

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 40 mbps. Blu-ray Discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:
Note: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet.
AVCHD: The BD-P1600 will play home videos recorded in AVCHD. AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on a standard DVD.
MP3/JPEG Playback: The BD-P1600 supports MP3 (48kHz/320kbps) and JPEG playback from CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs, plus a USB storage device.
Region Code: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BD-P1600 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.
Copy Protection: Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.
Graphic Interface: The BD-P1600 includes two individual HD resolution graphic planes (layers), one for graphics within the frame, such as subtitles, and one for interactive buttons; play movie, scene selection, etc. Because of Blu-ray's extremely high transfer rate and ability to preload data from the disc, the menu system can consist of several pages and can be accessed while the movie plays in the background. Some BD discs allow adjustable fonts, sizes, and colors for subtitles.
Video Up-conversion: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output the BD-P1600 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.
Video Output: There are three types of video output on the rear panel; composite video, component video, and HDMI. The output resolution is adjustable as follows:
1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-P1600 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.
BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.
TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-P1600 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.
Picture Mode: This function enable you to adjust video quality when you are connected to a TV via HDMI. You can choose from Dynamic, Normal, or Movie.
Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.
Parental Lock: The Parental Lock function works in conjunction with Blu-ray Disc/DVDs that have been assigned a rating which helps you control the types of Blu-ray Discs/DVDs that your family watches. There are up to 8 ratings levels on a disc. The rating levels are protected by a customer user 4-digit password.
Dimmer: The unit's display offers three dimmer settings - Automatic, Dim, and Bright. The Automatic setting automatically dims the display during playback and brightens the display when stopped.
Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-P1600 can decode the following Dolby Digital/DTS surround formats - Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio (Essential). The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via optical or HDMI input.
Digital Audio Output: The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical and HDMI outputs:
Dynamic Compression: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.
BD-Live: BD-Live technology allows you to download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers, movie-based games, and more from a broadband internet and home network connections (fees may apply). The BD-1600 features an Ethernet port to connect to the internet via your home network and features two USB ports (front/rear) for additional storage. You can also connect to your LAN using the optional wireless WIS09ABGN LAN adapter (305LINK, sold separately).
Note: You must have a minimum 1GB USB memory device inserted in on of the unit's USB slots in order to download content from BD-Live.
Video and Music on Demand: The Samsung BD1600 Blu-ray disc player offers online video and music on demand via a network connection, using the unit's rear-panel Ethernet port or the optional wireless WIS09ABGN LAN adapter (305LINK, sold separately). The Samsung BD1600 allows access to the following internet websites.
Multi-brand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on multiple brand TVs. Once programmed, the remote controls the TV's power on/off, input select, volume up/down, channel up/down, and mute.
Anynet+: Anynet+ is an AV network system that enables compatible Samsung components connected by HDMI cables to transfer command codes along with video and audio signals.
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface): The unit's HDMI version 1.3 output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player because DVI is a video only cable. HDMI video can be output at 1080/24p, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, or 480p.
Component Video: The component video resolution can be set to 1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i.
Composite Video: The composite output is always live and fixed at 480i; it can output video when playing a Blu-ray Disc.
Digital Audio Output: The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.
Analog Audio: There is a pair of stereo RCA outputs for connecting the player to your television's analog audio input.
LAN: The rear-panel RJ-45 Ethernet port is used to connect to the internet for firmware updates and to access BD-Live, Internet Radio, and Netflix content.
Dual USB Ports: The USB type-A ports on the front and rear panel of the unit allow you to perform software upgrades using a USB flash drive. It can also be used to add more local storage for BD-Live content or playback of MP3/JPEG content. In addition you can connect to your network wirelessly using the optional proprietary Samsung Wireless LAN adapter (305LINK, sold separately).
