Our take on the Samsung BD-E5700

by Marshall Chase
Samsung

Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

A Blu-ray player for a "smarter" TV experience

The BD-E5700 is what they call a "Smart" Blu-ray player, with built-in apps that let you stream music and video from some of the most popular online sources. And it has built-in Wi-Fi®, so it's ready to go right out of the box — no additional cables are needed to connect to your wireless network. Oh yeah, it also plays Blu-ray discs, so your movie nights with be filled with incredibly lifelike images and master-quality surround sound.

Internet entertainment options abound

If you're a fan of Netflix®, YouTube™, hulu PLUS®, or Pandora® Internet radio, you can use the 'E5700 to stream your favorite movies and music via your broadband Internet connection. Plus the AllShare™ feature allows you to stream content from a compatible computer on your home network, so you can enjoy music, watch videos, or browse pictures using your TV and audio/video system. And with a free, dowloadable remote app from Samsung, you can use your iPhone®, iPad® or Android™ handset as a convenient, Wi-Fi® system controller.

Takes DVDs and CDs for a spin too

In addition to playing Blu-ray discs, the 'E5700 handles just about any other disc you may have. Pop in a classic from your DVD collection, or enjoy your favorite music CD. It also plays discs you've burned, including those filled with MP3 tunes and JPEG digital photos.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Samsung BD-E5700 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types.

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 40 mbps. Blu-ray Discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 1080/24p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BD-E5700 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.  Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware/Software Upgrade: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. The player's Software Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the player's software & firmware for these performance improvements & additional services. You can upgrade in four ways - Internet, USB, Disc, or Downloaded file.

Note: The tested Samsung Blu-ray player contained firmware version 2011/12/23_001002 (as of 3/23/2012). There was an immediate firmware version update available (2011/12/23_001008). Visit the Samsung Download Center for the latest Firmware/Software updates.

Video File Support: The Samsung BD-E5700 Blu-ray disc player supports the following video files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD-R discs.

Video Codec Resolution Frame Rate (fps) Bitrate (Mpbs)
MPEG4 SP/ASP 1920 x 1080 6-30 20
H.264 BP/MP/HP 25
H.263 720 x 480 10

MPEG1 352 x 288 24 or 25 20

Music File Support: The Samsung BD-E5700 Blu-ray disc player supports the following music files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, and CD-R/RW discs.

Audio Codec Sampling Rates (kHz) Bitrate (kbps)
MP3 (.mp3) N/A up to 320 kbps
WMA (.wma) 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 44.1, or 48 5-384

Photo File Support: The Samsung BD-E5700 Blu-ray disc player supports JPEG still-image files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, and CD-R/RW discs.

Video Features

HDMI ver.1.3: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.3) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video outputs.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-E5700 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

Video Up-conversion: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output, the BD-E5700 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-E5700 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function.

x.v.Color: The BD-E5700 supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-E5700 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

Picture Settings: This function enables you to adjust video quality when the player is connected to your TV.

  • Normal: Suitable for most viewing applications.
  • Movie: Suitable for watching movies.
  • Dynamic: Increases sharpness.
  • User: Lets you adjust the sharpness and noise reduction function manually.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Features

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-E5700 can decode the following Dolby Digital/DTS surround formats; Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio. The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via coaxial or HDMI input.

Digital Output/Surround Mode Chart: You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or Coaxial) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

Disc Type Audio Stream PCM Bitstream (Unprocessed) Bitstream (Re-encode)

PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.

Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.

Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital coaxial (RCA) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.

integrates well with Samsung TV

Written By KS, Steamboat Springs, CO on Sunday, March 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased specifically to work with a Samsung TV that doesnt have Netflix integration. Like all Samsung TVs (that I've tried) the setup process isnt totally intuitive, so give yourself a little time (like on a day when you're not planning on watching TV) to get it done without frustration. Other than that, it does what it says it does nicely.
Pros:
compact size, Netflix capability
Cons:
Typical Samsung slightly goofy setup process

Samsung BD-5700

Written By CarolB, Doylestown, OH on Wednesday, January 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this player after returning the 5300 model. We like this unit much better. I especially like the front display where you can see that the power is on in a glance. Netflix, Pandora and You Tube have all been working fine through the smart hub. There are Samsung apps you can download for games as well as Facebook and Twitter. We have not downloaded or tried these additional apps. I may update this later after I try playing some DVDRW and CDRW's that I had trouble playing in the 5300. Thanks Samsung for great customer service.
Pros:
Front Display

Locks up during Netflix

Written By Jay, Ruckersville va on Saturday, November 24, 2012

Disc playback works well. However, player frequently becomes unresponsive while loading Netflix, either from the direct input button on the remote or through the Smart Hub. Wont return to menu without power cycling the unit. Updated to latest firmware, same thing. Full signal on WiFi (only 10ft from router with a 26 meg connect speed), seems like a software issue. Lookups so frequent and consistent didn't even bother trying other apps.
Pros:
Loads discs fast
Cons:
Locks up on Netflix just as fast

Samsung 5700. WI-FI

Written By Grant Power, Albergh Vt on Sunday, July 29, 2012

I have had this unit for more than 6 months and connected it to my Samsung 46 inch lcd tv ( 46D630 ). via HDMI - It shook hands right off and also was easy to connect to my wi-fi network. As I already had Netflix installed on my other TV via Sony PS 3 and IPAD lt connected right up. Netflix works flawlessly on this unit for me - guess the other reviewer may have an issue with his Wi-FI network or Internet Speed.

WiFi trouble

Written By JoeM FL, Port Charlotte, FL on Thursday, May 03, 2012

Received this BD-E5700/ZA directly from Samsung after they replaced it for the BD-D5700ZA which had WiFi connectivity issues (see my review under BD-D5700). Anyhow, when I tried to watch Netflix and listen to Pandora, the programs would either buffer or freeze. Samsung now has their player back and has processed my refund.
Pros:
Watching Discs
Cons:
Trying to Watch Netflix, or listen to Pandora via WiFi
