Keep the kids — and parents — happy

Not only will the BD-H5900 play the Blu-ray disc the kids like to watch over and over again, but when they (or you) get tired of it, you have options. Built-in Wi-Fi connects you to streaming services loaded with children's programming. When they go off to sleep, you can stream those grown-up TV shows you wouldn't dare watch around the little ones. There are also several ways to unwind with some music. You can play a CD, stream directly from a music service, or wirelessly connect to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play the tunes from your computer.

Beam images to your screen

Sometimes your phone screen is just too small for your task. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the BD-H5900. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible Samsung mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

  • 1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-H5900 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.
  • HD Up-conversion: With HD Up-conversion, non-HD video is auto-enhanced to bring you near-HD quality. You'll see your favorite titles with greater detail and clarity on your HDTV.
Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video or audio outputs.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-H5900 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
  • 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
  • 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep/x.v. Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-H5900 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function. The BD-H5900 also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-H5900 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-H5900 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).  The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via coaxial or HDMI input.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

Digital Output/Surround Mode Chart: You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or Coaxial) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.

Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.

Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital coaxial (RCA) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.
Network/Internet Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: You can set up the Samsung Blu-ray player so that it can access your home network and select online apps through your local area network (LAN) using a wired connection (RJ-45 Ethernet) or wireless connection (built-in WiFi). Q
can I hook it to my receiver using a digital-optical cable ?

A
No, there is no digital optical output on the unit. You can hook it up to your receiver with a digital coaxial cable. That's what I did and it works fine.
robert  Dec 06, 2015
A
Rear panel has HDMI, LAN and Digital Audio (coaxial) out. Sorry, no digital optical.
teddy  Dec 05, 2015
A
Yes, as I recall I hooked it to my TV with HDMI cable and to the audio receiver (which is fairly old with no HDMI input/output) with digital optical cable for the audio. Either that, or I went to the TV with HDMI and then from the TV to the audio receiver with digital optical cable. Not in a position to check it at the moment.

I'm not quite sure what a region free player is, and since I do not own this unit I'm not able to answer your question. I would have to rely on the first answer by Scott A. as he seems to have had his unit for a year and it appears to be working fine for him. Robert S

Yes, from what I have read this is a Region Free player. Absolutely love this player! Have had this for almost a year now, have had no complaints. Hope this helps. Scott

Q
HI, CAN I HOOK IT UP TO A SAMSUNG SOUND BAR WITH AN OPTICAL AUDIO CABLE?
hector  Sep 16, 2014
2 answers
A
You would need to purchase a coax digital to optical audio converter. Then you could connect it directly to an active or powered sound bar with optical inputs. You could not connect it to a passive or non powered sound bar without a receiver.
david  Aug 06, 2015
A
The only audio out of BD-H5900 is either through high-speed HDMI cable or coaxial cable. There is no optical signal output nor outlet for an optical audio cable. Moreover it could not be connected with speakers or sound bars without the assistance of an audio amplifier in between.

I only installed this machine less than a month ago ando not have much experience. Pictures are super. It did connect to FIOS internet flawlessly, and I suspect it will do what you ask. Keying in commands is a slow business, but I imagine all BD players have this handicap. Stay well, GBG

I haven't tried. I stream directly to my new Samsung 75H7150 TV using Verizon FIOS.
