Ultra HD-ready

If you keep an eye on the trends, you know that the television manufacturers are releasing more and more 4K Ultra HD TVs. The Samsung BD-H6500 is prepared to handle this new format by upconverting Blu-ray and DVD video signals to a 4K display. But that's just the icing on the BD-H6500's feature-filled cake.

Get the most out of it right now

Samsung made sure this player will work nicely with your current 3D-capable HDTV and home theater setup. The BD-H6500 has all the top-of-the-line video and audio capabilities we enjoy today. Theater-like 3D experience when you pop in a 3D disc? Check. High-quality HD picture for standard Blu rays discs? You bet. Support for surround sound formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD®? Check, and check again. You'll find it all here.

Beyond Blu-ray

Let's say the kids are tired of that Blu-ray disc they always watch. The BD-H6500 gives you options. Wirelessly connect to your home network via the built-in Wi-Fi and stream children's programming through Netflix®, Amazon Instant Video, HuluPlus™, or one of the numerous other available apps. Perhaps the kids are asleep, and you want to binge-watch an award-winning drama series or finally catch that movie everyone told you about. Just a few clicks of the remote, and you're streaming either on your screen. If you would prefer some music to unwind, choose from several streaming music apps. You can even connect wirelessly to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play the tunes from your computer.

Beam images to your screen

Sometimes your phone screen is just too small for your task. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the BD-H6500. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible Samsung mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

Blu-ray Disc players — the ultimate picture and sound

Blu-ray players deliver a better picture to your HDTV than any other available source. In fact, Blu-ray's 1080p picture is a perfect match for the 1080p screens found on most current TVs. Blu-ray movies also offer the most precise and realistic surround sound you can get. These players do a terrific job with standard DVDs, too — you'll see a cleaner, clearer picture with every disc in your collection. Many Blu-ray players can connect to the Internet for watching online movies from Netflix® and other video services.

Video Section

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-H6500 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video or audio outputs.

4K Video Up-conversion: Upscale your favorite non-4K videos and films and enjoy them in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this Samsung Blu-ray Player and your Ultra-HD TV. 4K provides four times higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition content. The unit also offers 720p, 1080i, and 1080p upscaling if your TV does not support Ultra-HD, but is Full-HD. It also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-H6500 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition (1080p) 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
  • 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
  • 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep/x.v. Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-H6500 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function. The BD-H6500 also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-H6500 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-H6500 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc). The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via Optical or HDMI input.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the Optical digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

Digital Output/Surround Mode Chart: You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or Optical) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

Audio Adjustments: The Blu-ray disc player provides the following audio adjustments.

  • PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.
  • Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.
  • DTS Neo:6 Mode: You can enjoy multichannel sound via the HDMI output from a 2 channel audio source.
  • Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.
  • Audio Sync: In some cases when the player is connected to a TV, the audio signal may not synchronize with the video signal. If this occurs, adjust the audio delay time to match the video signal. You can set the audio delay time between 0 msec and 200 msec.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital Optical (toslink) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the Optical digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.

SHAPE Multiroom Compatible: The Blu-ray Player easily integrates into Samsung's SHAPE Muti-Room System (sold separately). Enjoy your movies, TV and music wirelessly with rich, multi-room sound and no cluttering cords. Pop in a disc and hear its incredible sound on any compatible speaker in your home.

Samsung BD - H6500

Written By Tom, Seaford, Delaware on Friday, March 13, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old Blu-Ray player (expensive BIG well know brand) gave me many years of service, but skipped and froze up a lot when renting Netflix DVD's. They had to be new and flawless. However after connecting the Samsung up and playing a DVD I realized how far they have come with picture quality. The first DVD I played skipped a little in one place. My old player would have froze at that spot making me eject the disc. The picture is sharper with better colors and the audio also seems better. Startup for playing a disc is fast. My old player was quite slow. There is a setting for faster startup, but I doubt I'll ever need it. Setup was very easy. The lighted remote is very good. It does have an open and close button at the top. Crutchfield had it packaged safely and delivered it quickly. Would I buy this player again? Absolutely!

Pros: Very easy to set up. Excellent picture quality. Small size.

Cons: None

Great Center

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have not had many center speakers, just lots of frustration trying to figure out dialogue with my ears that I have thrashed as a young adult. Movies are much more fun when you can hear what the characters are saying. An added bonus with this Polk series is listening to strings vibrate through them. I'm not a classical music kind if guy but I appreciate good sound. Now I surf pandora looking for anything a violin will make an appearance. If you think about it, string instruments usually have a wooden box to resonate the sound, and these Polks do the same as well. Strings usually create emotion in a movie, and this center definitely warms the heart during these moments in movies. I'm happy !! You will be too.

Pros: Dialogue is separated from other sound

Cons: Still looking

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had the product for a couple weeks and everything works as represented to date. Replaced a DVD/CD player with this device and made my TV smart at the same time - well worth the upgrade. Set up was straight forward in addition to remote integration with my Samsung TV. Good value for the price. I would recommend this Blu-Ray to others.

Pros: Set up. Value. Size

Cons: None to date - need to better understand DLNA functionality and supported devices (TBD)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I always hesitate to review/rate electronics and appliances right after i buy them because you never know what could happen right after your review.

Pros: Easy to connect and navigate. Small and discreet appearance. Plays most DVDs without skips or other problems.

Cons: None thus far.

Works well, but some aesthetic and app issues

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I find that the ability of this player to play Blu-ray disks fully meets my expectations, with quick load speeds, fairly quiet operation, and great audio performance when played through the 5.1 surround system which I use in my home theater.

I do, however, have two complaints:

1) the black plastic is very soft, and will develop scratches by just wiping it with a damp paper towel, even with a premium brand paper towel. Samsung really needs to use a harder grade of plastic for the case on this player.

2) the app organization is annoying and not flexible enough. At the Main Menu, the lower left hand corner is the "Recommended" apps section, which displays the first three apps in that list. To the right of it is "My Apps", which displays the first three apps in your custom list. To see the full lists, you press the Smart "Hub" button on the remote. The problem here is that the "Recommended" Apps cannot be added to, deleted, or reorganized. Only "My Apps" have that option. This is irritating., as it would make sense to have the apps which you use most frequently present at the Main Menu, rather than ones of no interest.

The remote is small but functional. I have read reviews where people complain that there is no "Eject/Load" button, but that simply is not true. Those individuals must not read User's manuals. The Eject button is located directly beneath the Power button. It looks like an upward pointing "arrow".

Pros: Good load speed; good video and audio playback for the price

Cons: Cheap plastic case scratches extremely easily; app access lacks full customizability.

Good Blu-Ray with web browsing

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the BD player primarily for the built-in Wi-Fi and the "full web browsing" capability. It was installed in a conference room so it would give us capability od displaying DVD, BD and PC connections. Connection to our network was easy, even though we have fixed ip address to all our devices, it was easy to setup the internet. First thing you need to do is an update, to be sure all apps work correctly. It took a good 1 hr to do the update. One of the other features it comes with is the ability to connect a wireless mouse and keyboard through the USB port. Neither Samsung or Crutchfield mentions which brands of keyboard will work. I connected a Microsoft 800 wireless keyboard and mouse and they worked perfectly. You can even connect a wired mosue to navigate within the browser and the menu options of the BD player. The browser is ok, but not very fast. If you are going to be doing a lot of browsing, you are probably better of connecting a laptop to your display. The BD player runs faster in browsing under a wired connection, than the wireless. I have not streamed movies long enough through the wi-fi to see the reliability of the connection, but so far so good.

Pros: Easy to set-up, compact in size, good options for sound and and video, fast start-up and easy connection to a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Cons: No live streaming APPS for news from Samsung. No coax digital out.

Nice little blu ray player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a small easy to use blu ray player that is simple to hook up. It easily connects to Pandora, Hulu etc. The 4k upscaling is decent on my 4k TV and a great feature on an inexpensive Blu Ray player. The only thing I would add is a clock on the front display when it is off, I miss my old one from my VCR (R.I.P. VHS)

Pros: Small, fast start up

Cons: No front display clock, Front display is low quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Old Samsung stopped playing Blu-Ray and it didn't have the ability to watch Amazon Prime directly on our TV. This one does all - super easy to set up and so far it's been great.

Pros: Plays Blu-Ray discs (of course) and best of all - Amazon Prime and others - super fast streaming

Cons: Buttons on the top of machine (circle dial) are hard to see since we store our device on a shelf. Generally use the remote so not a huge con.

Great Product--Excellent Value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The device is well-packaged in shipment, compact, with a detailed, but easy-to-understand instruction manual. The device is attractive and extremely functional, with setup exceptionally easy. Using the device is simple and straightforward. It simply works as one would imagine it should. I do have 2 complaints as to the design. These complaints were observed in other reviews I encountered elsewhere (during my own research). Those statements were accurate. The 2 issues are: a) the inability to eject the tray via remote, and b) the on-board controls placed on the top right hand corner of the unit. If you place the player in a cabinet (like I did), and if it sits on top of a stack of other components, make certain you've left enough space to reach in to operate the on-board controls. Because the on-board controls don't sit very "proud" of the unit's surface (meaning they don't stick out very far at all); they are almost imperceptible to feel, but are quite sensitive. Because my unit is on top of a stack that completely fills the cabinet space, I must actually grasp the unit and pull it out far enough to "see" the controls. If I don't do this, I will invariably hit the wrong control and usually (and inadvertently) turn the unit off instead of ejecting the tray. Samsung should have created an eject button on the remote. Perhaps a future firmware change might, somehow, allow two keys pressed at the same time on the remote to open the tray--failing that of having a dedicated button.

Pros: Excellent value in a small, inexpensive package

Cons: Cannot eject tray via remote; on-board controls placement can be an issue depending on location of unit.

Exciting

3D Samsung Blu-Ray

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good picture and resolution. Inconsistent response time to remote commands, from immediate to 5 seconds and sometimes more - same command, same disc. A disc that was previously played was placed in the player and a message appeared that stated that the disc was not compatible; the disc was ejected, re-loaded and properly read and played. Once the unit would not respond to the eject disc command; the unit was shut off, re-started, and then responded properly.

Pros: Very good picture quality and resolution.

Cons: Inconsistent reaction time to controls; inconsistent play.
