Ultra HD-ready

If you keep an eye on the trends, you know that the television manufacturers are releasing more and more 4K Ultra HD TVs. The Samsung BD-H6500 is prepared to handle this new format by upconverting Blu-ray and DVD video signals to a 4K display. But that's just the icing on the BD-H6500's feature-filled cake.

Get the most out of it right now

Samsung made sure this player will work nicely with your current 3D-capable HDTV and home theater setup. The BD-H6500 has all the top-of-the-line video and audio capabilities we enjoy today. Theater-like 3D experience when you pop in a 3D disc? Check. High-quality HD picture for standard Blu rays discs? You bet. Support for surround sound formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD®? Check, and check again. You'll find it all here.

Beyond Blu-ray

Let's say the kids are tired of that Blu-ray disc they always watch. The BD-H6500 gives you options. Wirelessly connect to your home network via the built-in Wi-Fi and stream children's programming through Netflix®, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu®, or one of the numerous other available apps. Perhaps the kids are asleep, and you want to binge-watch an award-winning drama series or finally catch that movie everyone told you about. Just a few clicks of the remote, and you're streaming either on your screen. If you would prefer some music to unwind, choose from several streaming music apps. You can even connect wirelessly to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play the tunes from your computer.

Beam images to your screen

Sometimes your phone screen is just too small for your task. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the BD-H6500. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible Samsung mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

Video Section

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-H6500 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video or audio outputs.

4K Video Up-conversion: Upscale your favorite non-4K videos and films and enjoy them in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this Samsung Blu-ray Player and your Ultra-HD TV. 4K provides four times higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition content. The unit also offers 720p, 1080i, and 1080p upscaling if your TV does not support Ultra-HD, but is Full-HD. It also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-H6500 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition (1080p) 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
  • 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
  • 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep/x.v. Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-H6500 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function. The BD-H6500 also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-H6500 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-H6500 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc). The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via Optical or HDMI input.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the Optical digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

Digital Output/Surround Mode Chart: You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or Optical) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

Audio Adjustments: The Blu-ray disc player provides the following audio adjustments.

  • PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.
  • Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.
  • DTS Neo:6 Mode: You can enjoy multichannel sound via the HDMI output from a 2 channel audio source.
  • Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.
  • Audio Sync: In some cases when the player is connected to a TV, the audio signal may not synchronize with the video signal. If this occurs, adjust the audio delay time to match the video signal. You can set the audio delay time between 0 msec and 200 msec.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital Optical (toslink) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the Optical digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.

SHAPE Multiroom Compatible: The Blu-ray Player easily integrates into Samsung's SHAPE Muti-Room System (sold separately). Enjoy your movies, TV and music wirelessly with rich, multi-room sound and no cluttering cords. Pop in a disc and hear its incredible sound on any compatible speaker in your home.

The Web Browser is optimized to fill your connected TV's screen. The Web Browser provides two types of browsing; Pointer Browsing and Link Browsing.

  • Pointer Browsing: When you launch the browser for the first time, Pointer Browsing is active. If you are using a mouse to navigate in the Web Browser, leave Pointer Browsing active.
  • Link Browsing: If you are using your remote to navigate in the Web Browser, replace Pointer Browsing with Link Browsing. Link Browsing moves a highlight from one link to the next in the Web Browser and is much faster than Pointer Browsing if you are using your remote.

Q
Anyone know if this player streams MHz Choice programs?
oldoc  Mar 29, 2016
3 answers
A
To my knowledge, no. The supported stream services available include Netflix, M-Go, Amazon Video, and Bravo. The "SmartMenu" did not list Mhz Choice. This answer reflects the latest available firmware (i.e., 1112, dated 21 January, 2016).

The player provides access to Samsung's App Store and MHz Choice is an available app there: http://www.samsung.com/us/appstore/app.do?appId=G15268004428 I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

I've never tried streaming MHz programs, but it should work because it apparently works on 2013 and newer Samsung smart tvs. The kicker though, is that MHz is discontinuing smart tv support on 4/1/2016. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Q
Is the remote IR or RF (I need to put the player in a closet and need RF)?

A
Michael, I don't understand your question, if you could explain it further. Are you asking about the remote control? It works like every other remote.
michael  Aug 20, 2015
A
I Couldn't find any info in the manual regarding whether the remote is IR or RF, but when I tried operating it from an adjoining room it didn't work so I assume it's IR. Crutchfield has an IR repeater (Sanus ELM501) to be able to put your equipment in a hidden location as you're wanting to do. That particular model will allow you to control up to 4 components.
brian  Aug 19, 2015
A
It is IR, not RF.

Q
I am going to connect this player to a HU8700 tv. Since the TV already upscales signals to near 4k do I need to turn this feature off on the player? If so where do I turn it off? Thanks

You should just connect it, and see what happens. I don't know that TV and didn't need to adjust anything with my BD-H6500. The player & TV work together to provide the right signal. I doubt you need to change any setting and if you do, all the features & spec's are on the remote.
