Our take on the Samsung DVD-HD841

Talk about an overachiever! Samsung's DVD-HD841 combines top picture quality with terrific multichannel high resolution audio. Owners of newer High-Definition televisions need to know about this DVD player. It can "upconvert" DVD video to use more of your TV's HD capabilities — you can enjoy picture quality that's noticeably sharper than progressive-scan DVD (480p).

The player's built-in "scaler" lets you select from three upconverted resolution options — 720p, 768p or 1080i — for the best-looking picture with more TV types (TV must have a DVI input). For tube TVs, 1080i generally works best, while 720p is the perfect match for DLP big-screens. The 768p setting matches the native resolution of many HD-ready flat-panel plasma and LCD TVs.

The improvement in picture quality comes from letting the DVD-HD841's advanced scaler circuitry do the video conversion normally handled by the TV. The DVD-HD841 performs this scaling internally, while the signal is still digital. When the signal passes to the TV via a DVI connection, the upconverted signal stays digital until it's displayed on the screen, thus eliminating a cycle of digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversions and the accompanying loss in signal quality. A DVI connection typically provides a sharper picture than component video on any TV, but the difference is most dramatic on "fixed-pixel" displays: DLP, plasma and LCD, and LCoS. (And don't worry — this player still gives you a great picture if you've just got a standard TV.)

The DVD-HD841 is a high-performance audio player, as well, with multichannel decoding for movies (Dolby® Digital/DTS®) and music (Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio).

Features
Inputs and Outputs Note

Features

HD Upconversion: The DVD-HD841 has the ability to upconvert a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 768p, or 1080i and pass it through the DVI output; upconverted signals are not passed by the component video output.

Video D/A Converter: This player uses a 54MHz/10-bit video digital-to-analog converter. This high-bit, high sampling D/A converter helps to reduce digital artifacts to give you a better picture.

Audio D/A Converter: This player features a 192kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converter.

PCM Down Sampling: You can select a PCM Down Sampling setting of On or Off. When On is selected and you are playing a DVD recorded in 96kHz, the signal is down converted to 48kHz/16-bit before it is passed through the digital outputs. When No is selected and the unit is playing a non-copy-protected DVD recorded in 96kHz, a 96kHz/24-bit signal passes through the digital outputs. If the DVD is copy-protected, the digital signal is automatically down converted. When playing DVD-Audio discs recorded in 192kHz or 176.4kHz, the signal is always down converted to 96kHz or 88.2kHz before it is passed through the digital outputs.

Progressive Scan Output: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with component video inputs that supports the progressive scanning mode. The component outputs on this unit can be set to pass either progressive or interlaced video.

Built-in Decoders: This unit has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders.

Digital Bass Management: This unit has built-in bass management that allows you to adjust the speaker size when using the 5.1-channel output.

2-Channel and Multichannel SACD Playback: In addition to standard 2-channel CD playback, this unit will play 2-channel and multichannel Super Audio CDs. During SACD playback, the digital outputs do not operate; the analog outputs must be connected to listen to SACDs. There is one set of stereo RCA outputs for standard 2-channel playback, and there is a set of 5.1-channel RCA for multichannel playback. For multichannel playback, the 5.1-channel outputs must be connected to a multichannel input on a receiver or preamp.

Multi-Channel DVD-Audio Playback: DVD-Audio is a multi-channel format used for high resolution audio recording. This unit can decode and play DVD-Audio discs with a sampling rate up to 192 kHz with a 24-bit word length.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 or Joliet formats. MP3 files with a compression rate from 128-320 kbps and WMA files with a compression rate from 64-192 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 3000 files and 300 folders.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-R discs using the ISO 9660 or Joliet formats. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back in a slide show. The slide show has a selectable interval that can be set to 6 seconds, 12 seconds, or 18 seconds. You can zoom in on any selected image (2x or 4x) or rotate an image 90-degrees clockwise. Each disc can have a maximum of 3000 files and 300 folders.

Zoom: The Zoom function allows magnification (2x or 4x) of selected screen areas, without distortion, even as the movie is playing. You can move the zoomed image around the screen.

EZ View: The EZ View feature allows you to adjust the aspect ration in the following ways:

  • Using a 16:9 TV
    • For 16:9 Aspect Ratio Discs:
      • Wide Screen: Displays the content of the DVD title in 16:9 aspect ratio
      • Screen Fit: The top and bottom of the screen are cut off. When playing a 2.35:1 aspect ratio disc, the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen will disappear. The picture will look vertically stretched.
      • Zoom Fit: The top, bottom, left and right of the screen are cut off and the central portion of the screen is enlarged.
    • For 4:3 Aspect Ratio Discs:
      • Normal Wide: Displays the content of the DVD title in 16:9 aspect ratio. The picture will look horizontally stretched.
      • Screen Fit: The top and bottom of the screen are cut off and the full screen appears. The picture will look vertically stretched.
      • Zoom Fit: The top, bottom, left and right of the screen are cut off and the central portion of the screen is enlarged.
      • Vertical Fit: When a 4:3 DVD is viewed on a 16:9 TV, black bars will appear at the left and right of the screen in order to prevent the picture from looking horizontally stretched.
  • Using a 4:3 TV
    • For 16:9 Aspect Ratio Discs:
      • 4:3 Letter Box: Displays the content of the DVD title in 16:9 aspect ratio. The black bars will appear at the top and bottom of the screen.
      • 4:3 Pan Scan: The left and right of the screen are cut off and displays the central portion of the 16:9 screen.
      • Screen Fit: The top and bottom of the screen are cut off and the full screen appears. The picture will look vertically stretched.
      • Zoom Fit: The top, bottom, left and right of the screen are cut off and the central portion of the screen is enlarged.
    • For 4:3 Aspect Ratio Discs:
      • Normal Screen: Displays the content of the DVD title in 4:3 aspect ratio.
      • Screen Fit: The top and bottom of the screen are cut off and the full screen appears. The picture would look vertically stretched.
      • Zoom Fit: The top, bottom, left and right of the screen are cut off and the central portion of the screen is enlarged.

Resume Play: Resume play allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last stopped. The stopping point is cleared when the Stop button is pressed more than once or the disc tray is opened.

Instant Replay: This function is used to replay the previous 10 seconds of the movie from the current position.

Instant Skip: This function skips playback ahead 10 seconds.

Bookmark: This function allows you to store bookmarks on a disc that can be easily recalled. You can bookmark up to 3 scenes at a time.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

DVI (Digital Visual Interface) Output: The DVD-HD841 has a DVI-I jack for connecting a compatible TV or monitor. This player supports HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) technology, which provides secure data transmission for high definition video. Only DVI-HDCP supported devices can be connected. A 6.25' DVI cable is supplied.

Note: Though the player has a DVI-I connector, the only signal output from the DVI-I connector is digital.

Excellent Product

Written By Kaan, West Brookfield, MA on Saturday, April 02, 2005

Yes, the set-up is a little tricky but it is well worthed. I first did the firmware upgrade going to Samsung website support which gave clear instructions that worked. This only allows the DVD player switch itself to DVI output whenever you plug the DVI cord. That by itself did not allow me to watch DVDs through the DVI connection. I called the support phone # which came with the product. The first tech I spoke quickly connected me to a "product specialist" who was very knowledgeable, kind and helpful. Merely by entering a code through the remote, my HDTV (another Samsung) was able to show DVDs at 720p! And, boy, what a difference! I feel like every penny I paid was worthed. Sound is great, through a coaxial connection to my home theater system, as well. I am very happy with the product.

Great DVD Player for the Price

Written By William, Westfield, NC on Monday, February 07, 2005

I have had this DVD Player for several weeks now and only had one major problem; that was the setup issue that several have had. However, I was aware of this problem and knew how to solve it. But, it should be noted that Samsung has a firmware updated available that solves this problem. I am guess that Samsung will have this firmware updated preinstalled in the near future.

I rent movies from Netflix, the 5 at a time plan, so I watch a lot of DVD's maybe too many. I have not had any problems with a DVD skipping. In fact, I haven't had any problems at all with the playback of DVD's. The sound is great and the picture is perfect displaying the finest detail and the full range of colors. I am using the DVI output set at 1080i. I only wish that I could get the picture to look half as good when watching standard definition TV stations. I have spent hours finessing the color of standard definition (S-Video) and only a few minutes adjusting the DVI settings.

The only gripes that I have are with the remote. You do have to point the remote almost directly at the DVD player for it to receive the RF signal. And the buttons on the remote are somewhat close together making it difficult to press the correct button sometimes.

I am giving this item 4 stars because of the remote control issues. Other than these two issues with the remote, I have had no problems with this DVD player. And the price of this DVD player when compared to the others with the same features almost overcomes these minor problems.
