IT's good, but could be better.

It does up convert to 1080p. The image quality looked a little washed out at first and I could not figure out why. After tinkering around with it for a couple of days I realized that the HDMI cable that comes with this unit is terrible!!!! I placed an order for a new HDMI cable, got a 6' 24gauge HDMI cable. Once I switched the cables I saw a big difference in picture quality. This unit has limited funtions on the front of the device e.g.(eject, play/pause, stop) you must use the remote for that. Not a big problem if you have a all-in-one.

Samsung DVD-HD960

I was very tempted to buy a Blu-Ray player but decided to wait until a much lower price drop. So I looked at the 1080p upcoversion instead and can only say the picture is very comparable to the new 1080p players. I have the Samsung HL-S5088 DLP TV which presents a remarkable picture Quality using this Dvd Player. I also like that the player has some excellent features in the setup menu to help you fine tune the picture using the Hdmi output. I can only suggest investing in a good HDMI cable that is 1080p compatible/just swapping out the stock cable that was included made a big difference in picture and sound. Overall a great DVD player.
Its just close to Blu-Ray

Wonderful DVD Player!

I must say I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of this DVD player. I have been using the Oppo 971, and moved it to my bedroom because this Samsung is so good. The menus are simple and easy to use(has a unique interface thats very functional). Great functions with Aspect ratio, Skip, and Instant Replay also. The HDMI upconversion is very good, not as good as the Oppo, but very nearly. I do not have a 1080P TV, but the 1080i output is excellent again. The remote control is great, but not illuminated. You really can't go wrong here and it should be a good mid-priced DVD player for years to come.

great machine

First of all, thanks to crutchfield...their customer support is second to none. This machine is well worth the money spent considering the low price of DVD players these days. Obviously, this player is not for everyone, and only for those who have compatible TV's to maximize what this player is trying to accomplish. The picture is NOTICEABLY better, and this is coming from my wife, who claims to not be able to tell the difference in quality when it comes to electronics! The machine is easy to operate and allows you to choose the lines of resolution your TV can handle. I have a 42in. westinghouse LCD 1080p tv/monitor, and when coupled w/ this player, it's as close to HDTV as one could imagine. I have it connected via DVI cable and optical audio for sound. When considering the new HD DVD players, I can't imagine the quality to be so astoundingly different that it will be worth the extra $ (and new DVD's) to upgrade. I put a newer movie on (gladiator) and an older one (Jaws II) to see just how much difference there would be. Gladiator was truly HD quality and Jaws II was not far behind. Clearly better than a standard DVD player or even one w/ 480p. I highly recommend this product! As far as the longevity of the machine, only time will tell, but I have high hopes!
