XM

Our take on the Samsung Helix

Samsung's impressive Helix satellite radio lets you listen to XM anywhere you go, record songs and shows from XM, and store your favorite MP3 and WMA files. It features a built-in antenna that lets you use it as a true portable and get XM reception in most areas, and also comes with the accessories you'll need to play it over your home stereo.

Storing XM content and MP3s
You can save up to 50 hours of XM programming in the Helix's memory. Whenever you hear a song you like, just press a couple of buttons to store it. You can also set up the Helix to record full blocks of programming, so you can enjoy XM in areas where you don't get reception. And you don't have to miss a thing — you can schedule the Helix to record upcoming shows.

You can use up to half of the Helix's memory — not quite 25 hours, due to file size — to store your MP3 and WMA music files. Mix them in with the songs you've saved from XM, and you've got a fantastic playlist.

Handy features
TuneSelect alerts you anytime one of 20 songs or artists you've saved is playing on XM. You can also save 99 of your favorite channels as presets. The bright, full-color display shows off all XM and MP3 information in text that's easy to see, even in bright sunlight. The five front-panel buttons give you total control over all the system's functions.

If you hear songs you'd like to own, bookmark them on the Helix. With the help of the included CD-ROM containing XM + Napster software, you can go online and purchase them through Napster, then organize them on your computer and load them onto the Helix. You'll have an impressive library of songs in no time.

Portable and in-home accessories
The Helix package includes a set of earbuds so, when you're planning on leaving the house, just charge up the Helix's battery and you're ready to go. Home accessories include a home cradle, indoor antenna, power adapter, and audio cable.

Note: A subscription to XM is also required. Satellite radio service is available only within Canada and the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Portable reception may vary by location. If you have questions about the proposed XM/SIRIUS merger, read the XM Customer Promise. To view this file, you will need the Adobe Acrobat PDF reader.

Features

Product Overview: The Samsung Helix XM2go portable satellite radio receiver with a built-in 1 GB memory for recording satellite radio programming or storing MP3 and WMA music files downloaded from your computer. The Helix comes with a home kit for connecting the unit to your home stereo system, plus a pair of earbud headphones. An optional car kit (item # 305YACP100), or an additional home kit (# 305YACD100) are also available. The Helix has a silver aluminum front, a black aluminum back and black trim around the display. The control buttons are backlit in blue.

XM Satellite Radio: XM Satellite Radio programming offers more than 170 digital radio channels including channels of commercial free music, plus news, sports, talk, comedy, and other entertainment programming from coast to coast.

XM Requirements: In order to listen to live XM or access the XM content you have recorded on the Helix, you must authenticate your subscription by maintaining an active XM Satellite Radio subscription, and docking the unit into the cradle with the power adapter and antenna for at least 8 hours a month. The recorded XM content cannot be transferred off the unit.

Rechargeable Battery: The Helix comes with a 3.7-volt rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery is rated for approximately 6 hours of live XM playback or 15 hours of prerecorded content playback. The amount of playback time can be affected by the duration of the display backlight. The battery can be recharged while plugged into household AC current or connected to your PC via the USB cable.

Display: The Helix is equipped with a full-color 1.67" TFT LCD screen. The XM channel names are displayed in their full color logo. In addition to the XM Channel names, the display shows the channel number, artist name, song title, battery status, and clock. The display also indicates the current play mode (XM or My Music), signal strength or available memory, and, when playing songs in "My Music", a progress bar with total track length and current location within a track.

Heads Up Display: The display is normally oriented to be read when the receiver is held upright. When the receiver is placed in the home or car dock, the receiver is placed on its side, and the display automatically reorients itself so it can be properly read. The button functions also rotate so they will "line up" with the display.

Built-in 1GB Memory: The Helix's 1GB built-in memory can be used to store XM content or a combination of both XM and MP3/WMA files. You can choose to exclusively store XM content, using the entire memory to store up to 50 hours of programming. If desired, you can partition the memory so that half (512MB) is used for XM programming (up to 25 hours) and the other half for storing MP3/WMA files (about 8 hours at 128 kbps).

Recording XM: You can instantly record XM content to the memory with the press of a single button. You can also schedule a recording by setting the date (today, every day, or a specific date), start and end time, and channel. Note: To schedule a recording, the receiver must be docked in the home stand with the AC power adapter and XM antenna connected, plus signal strength of 2 bars.

10-Minute Buffer: The Samsung Helix has a 10-minute memory buffer which allows you to start recording a song on live XM anytime during the song without fear of missing the first portion of the song.

TuneSelect: The TuneSelect feature finds your favorite artist or song whenever they are currently being played on any XM channel. When you hear a favorite song, you can add the song or artist to the TuneSelect list. You can also enter an artist name or song title using the virtual on-screen keyboard, even if it's not currently playing. When the saved song or artist is playing on any other XM channel, the Helix will beep and you will be given the option to switch to that channel.

Bookmark: You can bookmark songs that you hear on XM (live or recorded), and view those bookmarks through the XM+Napster application when the unit is connected to your PC. You can then look up information about the artist or album, and purchase a complete, high-fidelity version of the song that can be played on multiple devices through XM+Napster. You can also purchase other songs by the same artist (or similar artists) on XM+Napster.

Organizing Music: All songs and tracks that are stored in the Helix are normally played in the order that they were recorded or transferred into the unit. You can also sort the selections by artists, category, channel, or by recording session.

Playlists: You can create custom playlists of recorded songs to be played in a specific order. Songs can easily be added, deleted, or moved within the playlist, and can be added to more than one playlist. Playlists can contain content from both XM and MP3/WMA.

Locking/Unlocking XM Content: You can "lock" a song or track to prevent the Helix from recording over it. All songs by an artist, in a category, or in a channel can be locked all at once.

Info Extras: XM Satellite Radio broadcasts information such as sports scores, stock prices, and other features from time to time. You can select your favorite sports teams or track up to 20 stocks, and the scores and stock prices will scroll along the bottom of the display.

XM+Napster: Included with the Helix is XM+Napster software on CD-ROM. With XM+Napster, you can manage songs, playlists, and recording sessions on the Helix, transfer MP3/WMA files between the Helix and your PC, explore and purchase music from XM+Napster's online store, and listen to XM Radio online. The software will also allow you to rip tracks from your CDs to your PC, plus transfer MP3/WMA files onto a recordable CD or DVD. Content from XM is recorded in AAC Plus, and cannot be burned onto a CD or DVD or otherwise transferred off the Helix. See below for System Requirements. Note: XM+Napster requires a separate monthly subscription fee. XM+Napster Light service, with limited features, is also available without a monthly subscription.

System Requirements: The Helix is compatible with PCs that meet the following requirements:

  • Intel Pentium-class CPU
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, or Windows 2000 operating system. (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows ME and Mac OS are not supported.)
  • At least 64 MB of RAM
  • At least 13 MB of available hard disk space for XM+Napster application
  • Internet Explorer 5.1 or higher
  • Windows Media Player 9 or higher; Windows Media Player 10 recommended for Windows XP.
  • Active Internet connection; a broadband connection (cable, DSL, or fiber) is recommended for optimal performance
  • Note: Helix may not work with all computers meeting these requirements depending on system configuration and user demands on existing hardware and software.

USB Port: The Helix is equipped with a USB port on the top panel next to the headphone jack. The USB port is compatible with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed for fast data transfer.

FM Modulator: The Helix contains a built-in FM modulator that automatically turns on when you dock the player into the optional car kit (305YACP100), and allows you to listen to whatever your Helix is playing using a car FM radio. The FM modulator turns off automatically when you undock the player.

Tone Controls: The Helix features separate bass and treble controls, each with 13 steps.

Sleep Timer: You can set the Helix to play for a specified amount of time and turn itself off. The sleep timer can be set for 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Comprehensive Review of the Samsung Helix

Radio stations in my area aren't that great. I've wanted XM for quite some time, and the Helix is perfect. I needed to be able to play music in my office, which is deep within a building (no XM signal). So I record my favorite channels at night, then take the Helix to work and play music all day long. Battery power lasts longer than I need (5-7 hours a day).

Outdoors I have no signal problems. In some buildings and airplanes I can get adequate signal with the Helix, but I don't have to count on it with recorded XM content in memory. I lock songs I like so they don't get recorded over by new content the next day. Or I can bookmark songs and buy mp3s online via the Napster software. I think with the memory split 50/50 (recorded content/mp3s) I have nearly 500 songs recorded from XM at any time, not including the mp3s.

The menus are easy to use and set up. The firmware was easy to upgrade. I have not had any problems with the unit after having used it each day for a couple weeks now. The parts in the kit all functioned properly, headphones are very good and the included protective cover is very durable. I could do without the flap on the jacket but that's a minor issue.

Am buying the car kit for use in my car, since the built in FM Modulator only functions in the car kit (FCC regs). Web info indicates that the INCAR2 version car kit for the Inno also works with the Helix.
The favorites feature makes favorite channels quick to access. I keep traffic channels next to music and talk channels for brief updates.

The Helix is a must have for anyone who wants XM and personal music on the go!

The Helix is a great XM/MP3 player combo. You can't go wrong with this product. I used it the first day docked in the home kit and played around with recording "Live XM" and with the included XM+Napster software to transfer MP3 files to the unit and it was so easy to use. The firmware version that it comes with is v1.10 and to resolve the issues that others are complaining (i.e., the battery drainage issue while not docked in the cradle) you must go to the XM website and using the supplied USB cable, download the latest firmware v1.30 and follow the instructions on installing the firmware to the Helix. Compared to the Pioneer Inno, all the functions are the same, menus are the same, buttons are the same at a much cheaper price. You are just paying for name rights. One is Pioneer and one is Samsung. Overall I give this product a 5 star rating. Go out and buy it today.

Best Electronics Purchase In a While

Written By Jennifer, Chicago, IL on Wednesday, February 14, 2007

I finally decided to write an online review for something because 1) Crutchfield is the best electronics retailer I have ever purchased from and 2) The Samsung Helix is the coolest and overall best electronics purchase I have bought in a while. When satellite radio first came out, I couldn't imagine paying $13 a month for radio stations, but I have since changed my tune.

The reason I didn't give this 5 stars is probably the same reason others might have...the battery life is a little disappointing, but I have learned to live with it and charge the unit overnight, and also bought the car kit so I have the car charger if needed.

As far as everything else, I love my Helix. I have not had a problem with reception where I live (Chicago suburbs). The only minor issues are inside some buildings, but I do get reception for example at my gym. The car kit was a great buy as I have hooked the unit up to a car CD player (also from Crutchfield!), and I can get XM everywhere. If you are a true music lover, definately think about splurging on a portable player.

The Helix works great in the house and also in the car with the car kit, but it falls short when it comes to wearing it on your hip for a walk or run. The XM service comes and goes all the time. I have the antenna headphones on order to see if that will help. Overall the Helix is a great XM player, and I love how easy it is to move for the car to the home.

The car kit being discontinued and the battery life kept this from being 5 stars...it's easy to use, has great sound quality from the included ear buds, and for me, has been a great addition to my office, I just take the Helix and leave the home kit on the desk, so I have XM to go and in the office both.

Device great... battery terrible... Crutchfield support excellent!

I ordered the Helix in June and used it every day for the first week I had it. Reception was good, mostly because there are terrestrial repeaters in my area (Raleigh, NC). My issue came when I traveled out of town for a few days. When turned it on 2 days into my trip (first time powered on since I charged it) I found that the battery only had about 25% remaining. I tested this when I got home, and determined that the battery decay was 33-40% per day when removed from the docking cradle.

I contacted Crutchfield about this and they immediately shipped me a new unit (fastest way to send a replacement battery) and am experiencing the same problem with this battery as well.

The unit itself works great, but don't plan to get your 5-6 hours of listening unless you turn it on immediately after removing it from the charger.

Crutchfield offered to replace the unit with the Pioneer Inno - I hope to have better luck with that, as I want to be able to listen for 5 one-hour sessions when traveling, without lugging the bulky charger.

The Helix has a nice solid quality feel to it. I was really excited about getting the Helix, a nice concept. Unfortunately I could not get reception from the external antenna nor the one built in. The South is the only direction I do not have a window, pointed out the West toward the South I guess I couldn't get a clear shot. What baffled me is in my yard I couldn't get signal either. I am at the bottom of a hill but the sky was in plain view. Occasionally I could get signal if I held the Helix in a certain direction and didn't move it. At this point I thought the Helix was a bust but I bought it for commuting on the bus so I thought I'd try it just to see what happens. Starting off little to no signal at all but as we traveled toward the city at a certain point I got signal and the Helix held it strong no matter what direction I pointed it. So my advice would be if you are considering the Helix is to give it a try and keep in mind reception will depend on where you are located. I don't know how satelite radio would expect to compete with FM when it requires such a point to point line of sight. I never cared to research how XM works but it would seem if I can talk on my cell phone inside a building that this Helix should get reception in easier places than that. Obviously two different things. I was torn on giving the Helix such a low score but for money it cost, especially at original price I feel it should do what it says. I didn't get any further to see how any of the other features worked. I returned it to Crutchfield. At least with buying from Crutchfield I wasn't out anything.
