Our take on the Samsung HL-S5087W

NFL Samsung HDTV
Get High-Def Programming

Samsung's best-performing big-screens use a 1080p image chip that raises DLP™ (Digital Light Processing) display technology to a higher level. You don't have to be an engineer to understand why TV pictures with 1080p resolution offer so much more detail, depth and clarity compared to 720p models. A 720p display has about one million pixels while 1080p delivers over two million, for images that look more like real life. 1080p is also a pixel-perfect match for 1080i HDTV programs and high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players.

Another feature contributing to the HL-S5087W's spectacular picture is an innovative "dynamic iris" for dramatically improved black level, shadow detail, and overall contrast. The motorized lens iris is controlled by a circuit that continuously samples the brightness level of the video signal. The iris opens and closes instantly, controlling the light output with split-second precision to optimize contrast scene by scene. BrilliantColor™ video processing ensures colors that are both more accurate and more intense than ever before.

The HL-S5087W has plenty of inputs to handle your current and future audio/video gear. There are two HD-compatible component video inputs, and two HDMI inputs — and for future-readiness, all of them accept signals up to 1080p. The standard PC input lets this set double as a big, hi-res computer monitor. Whether you're interested in HDTV programs, DVD movies, video games, or all of the above, this TV will plug you in.

Features

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.

DLP Chip by Texas Instruments: Samsung employs a DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors capable of switching on and off at 15,000 or more times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast-moving images.

Cinema Smooth 1080p Light Engine: Samsung's Cinema Smooth 1080p light engine produces razor-sharp pictures in 1080p with a 5-segment color wheel that produces natural, vivid colors. The TV has a contrast ratio of up to 10,000:1, with outstanding colors and deep black levels.

5-Segment Color Wheel: The HL-S5087W features a faster 5-segment 2.2" color wheel than previous models, spinning at 14,400 rpm for smooth, fast-motion video. The wheel has the 3 primary colors of red, green, and blue, plus adds Cyan and Yellow, for more accurate colors.

Native Resolution: The television has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals and will display them as 1920 x 1080. All other input signals will also be displayed as 1920 x 1080.

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals. The TV also has a 181-channel NTSC analog tuner.

Wiselink: A side-panel USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device to view JPEG files and play MP3 audio files. You have access to the following functions:

  • Photo (JPEG) List: This menu shows JPEG files and folders saved on the USB device and allows you to do the following:

    • View: You can view individual photos by selecting them from the thumbnail display.

    • Rotate: This feature allows you to rotate the selected image by 90°, 180°, or 270°.

    • Zoom: You can enlarge a picture 2x or 4x. Once the image is enlarged, you can move it around onscreen.

    • Slide Show: You can play files on the USB device in a slide show. You can adjust the slide show speed to Slow, Normal, or Fast. You can also choose an MP3 file on the USB device to play as background music during the slide show. The repeat function allows you to play the slide show again and again.

  • MP3 List: This menu shows MP3 files saved on the USB device and allows you to play them back.

Cinema Smooth Film Mode: Samsung's 3:2 pulldown correction circuitry senses motion found in unconverted 480i DVD video based on 24 fps film productions. This is especially important when converting to a progressive video image, the result is an elimination of visible motion artifacts. Note: This feature is only available when using analog signals from component, S-video, or composite connections.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's DNIe makes input signals sharper, clearer, and more lifelike. It's advanced image processors and six-times density enhancer help to create true-to-life colors and high contrast, while virtually eliminating digital artifacts.

My Color Control Mode: The My Color Control Mode lets you select predefined settings that affect the skin, sky, and grass tones in a picture without affecting other colors on the screen. You can choose one of the following predefined settings: Standard, Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow or Custom. The Custom setting allows you to individually set and store color saturation values between 0 and 50 for Red, Blue, Green, Pink, and Yellow. If desired, you can instantly reset the colors to the factory default.

Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings
  • Dynamic: for viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
  • Cinema: for viewing the TV in low light, or when playing video games
  • Custom: allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color and tint

Color Weakness Enhancement: The Color Weakness Enhancement feature adjusts the Red, Blue, or Green color to enhance the picture according to the user's particular color weakness.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Wide Fit: enlarges the aspect ratio of the picture to fit the entire screen

  • Zoom 1: magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Zoom 2: magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel by lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or by raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low.

Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: for watching movies

  • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialogue

  • Custom: allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You can also choose the "On Timer Channel" and "On Timer Volume".

PC Display: The PC input allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output, allowing you to use the TV as a high-resolution computer monitor. In PC mode, you can adjust the following picture quality settings: Coarse and Fine, both of which allow you to remove picture noise.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, and DVD players.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Side Panel Inputs: The TV features a set of audio/video jacks (composite video and stereo RCA audio) on the right side panel. These jacks allow you to easily and quickly connect a camcorder or video game console.

HDMI: This input consists of two HDMI terminals. The HDMI terminals can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. One of the HDMI terminals can be used for a DVI-equipped component. A separate analog audio connection and a DVI-to-HDMI adapter will be needed. The HDMI jacks accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

PC: This input consists of left and right audio jacks and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. This jack allows you to connect a digital set-top box with an RGB output, or a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output. When using the RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack, you must use the PC Audio input for your audio connection.

Component Video Inputs: The 2 sets of component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

Antenna Inputs: Two independent cables or antennas can be connected to the "Ant 1 In" or "Ant 2 In" terminals.

CRYSTAL CLEAR!!!

Written By Stuart, St. Paul, MN on Monday, February 19, 2007

I'm glad I did my research before I bought this! I was looking for a plasma at first but kept reading negative remarks about them so I decided to broaden my search for a big screen tv to a DLP and talked with people about them and felt this was the way to go and I'm so glad that I came to that decision. The picture is unbelievable!! I have an Xbox 360 with upgraded HD cables hooked up to it and I cannot believe the clarity of this TV it's so amazing!! But back to my decision, just days after I bought my DLP a friend of mine bought a 50" plasma and he even agrees that the DLP shows a stunningly better picture. This is my second samsung tv that i've owned now and I am a firm believer that samsung makes the best TV's. I would highly recommend this TV. It's a great price with an even better picture.

GREAT DLP TV

Written By Danny, Aiken SC on Wednesday, February 14, 2007

I purchased the Samsung HL-S5087W from Crutchfield early December.I hooked the tv up using the HDMI connection to my cable box and to my surround sound THX receiver. The picture was good and after adjusting it the picture looked great. I was not pleased with the standard tv picture. One call to Crutchfields tech service took care of that. They told me what I needed to do and all is well. I purchased the Monster calibration dvd a little later and once I got my blacks adjusted right and the other settings the picture on this TV is outstanding. I would not trade it for any Plasma or HDTV on the market. Nothing but crisp clear pictures on HDTV channels and standard TV looks good also. I do not know of another company that stands behind their customers like Crutchfield. This was my first time buying any large item from a company on-line and Crutchfield made me a believer in them because of the way they treated me. Excellent TV, excellent service from Crutchfield and their Tech Staff. What more could you ask for. This tv has been a joy to watch and you will not go wrong if you purchase this tv.

Incredible Picture!

Written By Christian, Memphis, TN on Tuesday, February 06, 2007

I have had this TV for about 2 weeks. I also purchased a Sony AV Receiver STR DG1000 for it's HDMI connections. I got a Yamaha powered sub YST-SW225 to boot. Delivery was sweet, installation was a snap...HDMI from HD cable box to receiver, HDMI to TV and HDMI from PS3 to Receiver. The PS3 when I loaded Madden...well I was shocked...it's almost a completely different looking game. And HD TV is incredilbe. My friend had a 720p 40" Sony Bravia and ordered the same Samsung DLP after seeing mine. The SuperBowl looked incredible. The ease of connecting had my system plugged in and calibrated with the included mic for the receiver in minutes. It took 40 minutes to put together the stand and about 30 minutes to get everything hooked up and jamming. I love this Samsung DLP and HIGHLY recommend it to ANYONE looking for a new HD TV.

Look no further

Written By Bill, New York, NY on Sunday, January 14, 2007

White glove delivery took the set out of the box and turned it on - I connected it to an off-the-air antenna and was immediately blown away by the HDTV reception. Then, I got HDTV cable (I know, off-the-air is slightly better as no signal compression but I had other issues) and with the help of the Avia set up disk (worth the $$$) receive a spectacular picture. There can't be anything better - maybe just as good, but probably for more money. The picture is incredibly lifelike, it looks and feels as if I am having a panel discussion in my room. Sports, everything looks fantastic. The set itself is good looking and the stand very solid and sleek.
An aside and kudos to Crutchfield tech support - I initially couldn't get sound when I switched from a composite cable hookup to using an HDMI cable. I called tech support, and they called Samsung for me (I stayed on hold) and reported back to me that the issue was not with the set but with the cable box - I had to select the correct audio output with the cable box set up menu - and voila, all was perfect.
I only wish I had gotten a larger screen - I agree with Bill Crutchfield - get the largest screen you can afford/fit! It's worth it.
Enjoy your set.

Fantastic TV and Crutchfield service

Written By JohnnyD, Beach Lake, PA on Wednesday, December 20, 2006

I saw this TV in a local store and fell in love with the picture quality. Returned the next day with my better half and we both agreed this was the best we had seen. The Sony was displayed right next to the Sammy. Needless to say we got home called Crutchfield and ordered the Samsung.
Had it delivered within a week , hooked it up without a hitch. No complaints.

Great gaming tv!

Written By Keith, Phx, AZ on Wednesday, December 13, 2006

I just picked this baby up last week, and boy oh boy it it sweet. Not running anything except Xbox360, and man does it impress! No rainbows at all! A little 'silk screen effect', but it's not that big a deal for me.....besides, I'm sitting only 6 ft away, so it should get better the farther away you sit.

If your looking for a solid 1080P set, then look no further. I also compared the sony SXRD, and chose this one.

Incredible television!

Written By SkiKirkwood, Los Altos Hills, CA on Sunday, June 11, 2006

I just received my Samsung HL-S5087W last Thursday. This is my first HD television, and I'm glad I waited for the new generation of 1080p input/output units to hit the market. I first heard about Samsung's new line of rear projection DLP televisions that do both 1080p input as well as input back in January and preordered this unit on Crutchfield over a month ago.

The picture quality of the HL-S5087W is stunning. Out of the box it is great, but even better after calibrating it with my Video Essentials DVD. I hooked up the output of my DirecTV H20 HD receiver to the Samsung via HDMI (a $20 cable worked fine), and connected my Panasonic DVD recorder via component cables. I also connected the output of my terrestial UHF antenna to my H20 so I can send both HD satellite and over-the-air signals to the Samsung.

In addition to stunning picture quality for HD sources this new Samsung has a very sleek design, hiding the front speaker in a very clever way.

Highly recommended!
