Until Samsung debuted their LED-based light engine in 2006, every projection TV based on DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology used a color wheel to generate its picture. While that system creates crisp, clean high-definition images, a few viewers occasionally notice distracting flashes of color called "rainbows," caused by the spinning color wheel.
The HL-T5089S doesn't use a color wheel because Samsung found a better solution: LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). A single super-bright PhlatLight LED chipset produces the red, green and blue primary colors, creating vivid images with an ultra-wide color range. The LEDs flash on and off at much higher speeds than a color wheel, reducing the chance that viewers will experience rainbow effects. Other LED benefits include cooler, quieter operation and much quicker start-up.
Like other top-performing projection TVs, the 50" HL-T5089S has 1080p resolution. 1080p is a pixel-perfect match for 1080i HDTV programs, which make up the bulk of over-the-air, cable, and satellite HD broadcasts. This TV also lets you take full advantage of high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc players, which output video signals in the 1080i and 1080p formats.
The HL-T5089S has plenty of inputs to handle your current and future audio/video gear. There are two HD-compatible component video inputs, and two HDMI inputs and for future-readiness, all accept signals up to 1080p. The standard PC input lets this beauty double as a big, high-res computer monitor.

Samsung HL-T5089S Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Smooth as Silk
My previous TV was a 46" Samsung DLP so expectiations were high on this one and it did not dissapoint. Crutchfield delivered quickly with zero problems - in the snow! I appreciate the support Crutchfield provides however I needed none as the TV was easy to connect and setup. Local stores do not carry many of the latest models - guess they're trying to unload the older ones. Anyway, I'd rather pass up the rock bottom prices on the web to get good product & service.
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
What a fantastic set! Once I set the picture using Monster's calibration DVD the picture was unbelievable. Calibration of some form is highly recommended because the set seemed to come set up for a store environment, not your home.
I have DirecTV's HD DVR hooked up with a cheap HDMI cable and a low priced Sony DVD player connected with component video. The picture is great from both sources and I'm looking forward to adding a Blu-Ray player for what I understand is the ultimate picture.
This is my 2nd Samsung DLP TV and the need to replace the lamp was the motivator for moving on to LED technology. In addition, I've noticed that rapid motion plays much better on this display.
You cannot go wrong with these LED DLP sets.
It doesn't get any better than this. I bought this set some time ago from crutchfield and I've been glued to it ever since. You won't find a better picture on any plasma or lcd, at least, as far as I'm concerned and I researched them all for a couple of years before buying. The color points are perfect, not over saturated and no motion blur what so ever. I will suggest that you go the extra step and purchase the best cables you can afford, it does make a big difference and take the time to fine tune the color temperature's and movie modes. 1080P delivered through an HDMI cable to this TV will give you goosebumps. I can't say enough about this TV, its PICTURE PERFECT. I have it hooked up to a Denon 4802 7.1 channel THX ultra II surround reciever that I also bought from crutchfield and a Denon 1930ci dvd player " christmas gift " also from crutchfield and Speakers. The only downfall is now all my friends want to come to my house to watch a movie but I love showing it off, so I don't mind. P.S My brother like this set so much he bought one also " from crutchfield " you can't beat their service.

The picture on this TV is unbelievable!!! My TV is hooked up thru DirecTV's HD DVR with an Arista 58-7761 HDMI Cable. The HDMI cable that comes with the HD DVR is low-end, so don't be cheap about spending the extra $$$ for at least a 1080i compatible cable. There is a difference in picture quality. I can't say enough about how great the picture is in HD. Even my old DVD player hooked up with component video looks great. I've been shopping for the right HD TV for about 2 years and always liked the DLP's but was turned off with decreasing brightness, noise and expensive of the light bulb but Samsung fixed that problem on this model using LED's. I have yet to see a plasma or LCD with a better picture. My only complaint is, it is turning me into a couch potato!!!
Best for your Buck
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I will try not to rehash what has already been said but, like most reviewers, I started my search for a big screen TV about 18 months ago. I had three models picked out; one LCD, one Plasma and one RP. The Samsung was not on my list. Ultimately, I took a trip to a local electronics store and compared all three. Sitting next to the original RP I was going to look at was the Samsung. I was stunned by its clarity. I had done some research on DLP but had not actually viewed it up close and personal. It truly is like watching a movie in a theater.
This TV is the core of my home theater system. I purchased all the parts from Crutchfield and will be reviewing each in turn. To be totally honest, I would never have spent this amount of money online with anyone else but Crutchfield. Probably one of the best endorsements for them came from the delivery guy. When he asked me what I would like done with the boxes I said I would keep them just incase the TV goes bad. He chuckled a bit and said, "IF it breaks, you bought it from Crutchfield. They'll take care of you." He left with the boxes.

After shopping for over a year for a HD television, I finally decided on this Samsung because it was the largest screen I could get for my budget and it included plenty of inputs. The LED lamps produce a very bright and natural picture that is extremely sharp. The sound is very good too. The only downside to this TV is the more limited viewing angle compared to a plasma or LCD, but that is not an issue in my living room. I have a satellite HD package and the picture is incredible. I ordered this TV on a Friday and got it the following Tuesday. That is real speed and service! I would buy this TV again in a heartbeat and I would buy it from Crutchfield!

This tv is amazing....it replaced a Sony 48" projection tv that is 7 yrs old....I researched tv's (plasma,LCD,DLP) until i lost sleep at night....finally settled on this one...After sevral trips to the local tv store, the difference between Plasm/LCD and DLP is VERY noticeable....atleast to me it is....the led dlp is what did it for me...I have found though that you MUST be atleast 12' from this tv to get it's full effect.....any closer, and the brightness hurts your eyes-leading to a headache and an upset wife....my seating position is at 15', and it is an awesome picture.....I have the laptop hooked up with a wireless keyboard....KILLER....
The only negative that i have is the sound quality is not very good, as the speakers seem under powered....I am going to get a HTIB soon....
one more thing....DO NOT SKIMP ON CABLES....I hooked the directv hddvr up with straight coaxial and then with Monster HDMI 400.....LIKE NIGHT AND DAY....I have yet to use all the features of this tv, but am 100% satisfied so far.
The service from Crutchfield has been OUTSTANDING!!!....spent several chat sessions with "Marie"....decided to purchase after speaking with her a few times.
I purcahsed the HL-T5089S from Crutchfield and it arrived about a week ago. What an outstanding value! The picture is bright, sharp and the colors are vivid. The 1080p really makes a huge difference. I have paired my Samsung with a Toshiba XA2 and the performance of my system is incredible now. As always, buying from Crutchfield is always a great experience and I know I will be pleased and get great pleasure and enjoyment from this purchase for many years to come.
My previous TV was a Panasonic 44" LCD projection, 720p set. HD content looked very good but I found my self comparing HD DVD's on my Xbox 360 and Blu-ray on my Playstation 3 to their standard DVD counterpart. It varied from disc to disc but I wasn't blown away. I felt having a 1080p set was the only way to view these HD formats. Enter the Samsung HL-T5089S, Blu-ray on the Playstation is stunning. HD DVD's on the 360 aren't quite as good but I'm limited to 1080i on that. HD content on DirecTV varies according to the program but sports and programming from HDNet and Discovery are amazing. Non HD content ranges from poor to very good. I picked this set over a Sony SXRD because of the LED light system. I've only had it 2 weeks but I am extremely pleased. I've done no calibration on it so I imagine it could be better. This set was made for HD, highly recommended.

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.
Next Generation DLP Chip by Texas Instruments: Samsung employs a DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors capable of switching on and off at 15,000 or more times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast-moving images. When combined with Samsung's new Cinema Smooth Light Engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that's closer to film.
Cinema Smooth 1080p Light Engine: Samsung's Cinema Smooth 1080p light engine bring together the right optics, electronic circuitry and long-lasting light source to create a brilliant picture that's more lifelike and much closer to film. The sixth generation Cinema Smooth light engine delivers crisp, 1080p High Definition resolution with high contrast (10,000:1) and brightness, defined edges and sharp detail.
