Our take on the Samsung HL-T5689S

NFL Samsung HDTV

Samsung's LED-based light engine is a brilliant alternative to the color-wheel-and-arc-lamp used by conventional DLP TVs to generate a picture. While that system creates crisp, clean high-definition images, a few viewers occasionally notice distracting flashes of color called "rainbows," caused by the spinning color wheel.

The HL-T5689S doesn't use a color wheel because Samsung found a better solution: LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). A single super-bright PhlatLight™ LED chipset produces the red, green and blue primary colors, creating vivid, high-contrast images with an ultra-wide color range. The LEDs flash on and off at much higher speeds than a color wheel, reducing the chance that viewers will experience rainbow effects. Other LED benefits include cooler, quieter operation and much quicker start-up.

Like other top-performing projection TVs, the 56" HL-T5689S has 1080p resolution. 1080p is a pixel-perfect match for 1080i HDTV programs, which make up the bulk of over-the-air, cable, and satellite HD broadcasts. This TV also lets you take full advantage of high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players, which output video signals in the 1080i and 1080p formats.

The HL-T5689S has plenty of inputs to handle your current and future audio/video gear. There are two HD-compatible component video inputs, and two HDMI inputs — and for future-readiness, all accept signals up to 1080p. The standard PC input lets this beauty double as a big, high-res computer monitor.

Features

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.

Next Generation DLP Chip by Texas Instruments: Samsung employs a DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors capable of switching on and off at 15,000 or more times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast-moving images. When combined with Samsung's new Cinema Smooth Light Engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that's closer to film.

Cinema Smooth 1080p Light Engine: Samsung's Cinema Smooth 1080p light engine bring together the right optics, electronic circuitry and long-lasting light source to create a brilliant picture that's more lifelike and much closer to film. The sixth generation Cinema Smooth light engine delivers crisp, 1080p High Definition resolution with high contrast (10,000:1) and brightness, defined edges and sharp detail. The Cinema Smooth 1080p light engine uses a single-panel design that offer crystal clear picture without an possibility of convergence errors.

LED Modern Color Realization: The Samsung TV replaces the standard arc lamp and color wheel with LED Modern Color Realization Technology to produce better color. The solid-state, high output, lower power consumption, energy-saving designed LED will last the life of the TV with no lamp to change. The unit's built-in light sensor with beam current feedback insures stable light output over the life of the TV. The TV's ultra-wide color gamut (spectrum) exceeds NTSC defined color space requirements and it's ultra-quiet operation is due to no color wheel noise.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's DNIe makes input signals sharper, clearer, and more lifelike. It's advanced five image processors and six-times density enhancer help to create true-to-life colors and high contrast, while virtually eliminating digital artifacts.

Native Resolution: The television has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals and will display them as 1920 x 1080. The television features a full HD 1920 x 1080p digital format converter for all inputs.

Cinema Smooth Film Mode: Samsung's 3:2 pulldown correction circuitry senses motion found in unconverted 480i DVD video based on 24-to-30 fps film productions. This is especially important when converting to a progressive video image, the result is an elimination of visible motion artifacts.

Note: This feature is only available when using analog signals from component, S-video, or composite connections.

Integrated HDTV Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals. The TV also has a 181-channel NTSC analog tuner. An additional QAM tuner decodes unscrambled digital cable signals.

3D Comb Filter: The television utilizes a 3D comb filter to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by the TV is weak, you can activate the DNR feature to help reduce any static and ghosting effects that may appear on the screen.

Now..This is a HDTV

Written By George, Richmond, VA on Saturday, March 29, 2008

After receiving this Samsung, I was ready to get it set up. Connected it, and fire d it up and have not been disappointed since then. The color is great, contrast amazing, black levels great...It even takes the clunky non-HDTV video and makes it look great. Easy set up, but I wish they gave you a choice of having the menu for suet up and configuration on the bottom or the side, but looks like it only shows on the left side.

I highly recommend this model to anyone looking for a HDTV that will product the results you are looking for.

Great DLP TV - like this model

Written By Ken, White Plains, NY on Friday, March 21, 2008

First comments for Crutchfield: I will always buy from Crutchfield when they
are competitively priced and they are usually. Their Customer service is
second to none. I had to return this TV due to an issue with the sound. It
was within 30 days of the original purchase and taken back (the problem
has to be reproducible). You will not get their courteous customer-
oriented service at some electronic store, especially if you have a problem.
Do not switch to another company to save $25, its not worth it.

TV:
1) I'm evaluating this TV as a DLP TV and not comparing to Plasma/LCDs. If
your looking at DLPs, its for one reason - it is the best cost/benefit for a full
HD tv of this size. Comparably sized Plasmas/LCD will be $1000 or more.

2) This is my 2nd 56" Samsung DLP TV. The first one was 2006 model
720p. It got damaged in a storm. I still believe in Samsung when it comes
to DLP TVs.

Positives:
a) I choose this model because of the new LED chip versus the older
spinning color wheel. There is less delay to start the TV (no wheel to start
spinning). I think that will pay for itself in the long run because the wheel
does fail.
b) It is the only PIP model (although that feature seems to be dying out).
c) The picture in 1080i, from the HD stations (HD cable box), are amazing,
much better than the 720. The color and brightness compared to my older
720 TV is exceptional. 'Lost' is amazing.
d) It has a great looking piano bezel, very little edge to get full picture.
e) The hidden sound speakers is effective although see my other
comments. If you do not have hooked up to stereo, the SRS Surround
sounds nice.
f) 3 HDMI inputs, nice. My old TV only had one.
g) There is a Game mode, although haven't tested and a 3D mode
(probably never use). Xbox 360 looks great.
h) I hope to hook up to laptop shortly.

Negatives:
a) The sound is ok. Out of the box the sound is weak. There is an option
under Sound options called 'Auto Volume'. Put it 'On', then it is more
palatable. I also use the stereo for show like American Idol anyway

I cannot blame the TV for this but I was very disappointed when watching
Standard TV (480) when compared to the older 720p TV I had. What it
comes down to is hardware and technology. The higher the resolution of
your TV, the less attractive are Standard signals. There are more jagged
edges that do not get filled in on higher resolution TVs. The screen is
grainy and some images look still. Oddly, it sometimes looks better if I use
the cable out of the wall and not the digital HD cable box. Future
programming will continually improve and rather focus on the amazing
picture you DO get or will get.

DVDs (480p) have a similar issue to standard TV programming. Invest in an
upscaling DVD player. It will upscale to 1080p and
for the price it compares to much more expensive

HL-T5689S

Written By Kevin, Sewell, NJ on Saturday, February 23, 2008

First I would like to say that Crutchfield is the best online retailer I have purchased from and this is not my first online electronics purchase. Their customer service is second to none and I will purchase from them again. The picture on this TV is superb. The colors and the brightness are the best in its class in my opinion. I have compared this to the Sony 55A3000 and the Mitsubishi 57833 and found this to be superior. Connections are easy to make and HD content whether from Blu-ray or Cable HD is fantastic. The only downside and the reason this is not a 5 for me is that the TV has a terrible time drawing a straight horizontal line. I have investigated this and it is an inherent problem with all RPTV that have gone slimmer and slimmer. I equate it to a screen that is slightly warped and not perfectly square and thus the lines curve. Each manufacturer has their own tolerances and one should investigate them before purchasing. I happen to be sensitive to the problem where others that have seen the TV are not. Overall at its size and price and the picture that it displays it cannot be beat and I am happy with the set. I do not think though that if part of the application for this set would be as a computer monitor the buyer would be happy because of the geometry issue.

HL-T5689S Samsung

Written By RL, Houston, Tx on Monday, December 10, 2007

My old 45" rear projection Mitsubishi died on a Saturday night in late September 07. I was already looking into a new television, so I knew to come to Crutchfield again. I ordered the TV on a Saturday night and they called the next Thursday to set up a delivery time for Friday (not even a week). I have had the TV since early October, and I am completely blown away by the picture quality and the fantastic sound clarity (my Mitsubishi was always mumbly sounding). Anyway, video games look unbelievable and it is the only TV in the house now.....great....I guess I need another one. Seriously, no one in the house even turns on the other sets. P.S. I love the idea of the LED lamps never needing to be replaced...this TV is highly recommended.

Great

Written By Charles, Enterprise, Al on Thursday, November 15, 2007

First, I would like to confirm all the great reviews about Crutchfield's Customer Service. My first television was defective. The image was rotated about 5 degrees counterclockwise and while it was only noticeable when you had a straight line image broadcasted on the screen I decided to report it. Expecting them to send a repair person by to adjust the image, they told me they would send me a new TV and pick up the old at the same time. It was the easiest return I ever made in my life and will always use Crutchfield for future purchases.

This model was everything I hoped it would be and then some. This television provides a great picture, strong receiver for picking up off-air HDTV, great color, and most all features I would want in a TV. I was not as happy with the quality of free stand, but hey, it was free with the purchase. This television in my opinion, was better than the Sony 55A3000. Sorry Sony, I started upgrading all my television about two years ago and ended up buying all Samsungs from Crutchfield. I now own a 32, 40 inch LCD, and this 56 inch projection for the family room. Maybe Sony will be my next purchase but I have loved all my Samsungs.
Thanks Crutchfield.

Wow------GREAT PICTURE!

Written By supergeekhandGuy, STATESBORO, GEORGIA on Monday, August 20, 2007

Hello everyone! I did some major research, looking into the Samsung DLP technologies, versus Sony's SXRD technologies. I wanted to purchase something with a budget around $2500-$3000, but I didn't like the idea of having to purchase bulbs every 3-4 years. That is when I found the LED DLP (Samsung HL-T5689S); the first LED projection technology, which can last up to 20,000 hours and maybe more. Immediately after plugging it in, I was blown away by the picture. Everything; even standard cable, is brighter, clearer and bigger (LOL). I love it so far. I haven't upgraded to digital cable and/or to a HD or Blue-RAY DVD player (or up-converter); but I'm ready to do that soon. I'm still impressed with standard settings. I'll post again soon---but for now; I love the TV. It doesn't weigh much, making it easy to move, and the features are incredible. I'm still trying to figure out the PIP (picture-in-picture) thing; but I will. I'll post again soon; for now....get the TV..it's worth every penny

Samsung HL-T5689S

Written By Dave, Merritt Island, FL on Sunday, July 22, 2007

The Samsung HL-T5689S is a very nice product. The picture is bright (had to reduce the level) and very crisp. The colors are vivid and can be adjusted to suit your preferences. This set has many different inputs to accommodate about any input/output you may desire. I have Brighthouse cable service and the 16:9 HD 1080i channels are extremely crisp, just like being there looking at the real thing. Even the standard SD channels look good in the 4:3 format. The best viewing angle is within 45 degrees either side to retain the best image and brightness. I use a PS3 to play Blu-ray movies at 1080p and also Blu-ray HD games. The Blu-ray HD golf is just like being at the golf coarse, very realistic. I have 4 controllers and baskeball is awesome - lots of fun for all ages. The Samsung HL-T5689S is a fantastic electronic marvel!
