Our take on the Samsung HL-T6187S

by Steve Kindig
Samsung
NFL Samsung HDTV

Samsung's LED-based light engine is a brilliant alternative to the color-wheel system in conventional DLP TVs. While that system creates crisp, clean high-definition images, a few viewers occasionally notice distracting flashes of color called "rainbows." These rainbows are caused by the spinning color wheel.

The HL-T6187S doesn't use a color wheel because Samsung found a smarter solution: LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). A single super-bright PhlatLight™ LED chipset produces the red, green and blue primary colors, creating vivid, high-contrast images with an ultra-wide color range. The LEDs flash on and off at much higher speeds than a color wheel, reducing or eliminating the chance that viewers will experience rainbow effects. Other LED benefits include cooler, quieter operation and much quicker start-up.

The 61" HL-T6187S has 1080p resolution, which is pretty much a necessity to ensure a crystal-clear picture on a screen this large. 1080p is also a pixel-perfect match for 1080i HDTV programs, which make up the bulk of over-the-air, cable, and satellite HD broadcasts. This TV also lets you take full advantage of newer high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players, which output video signals in the 1080i and 1080p formats.

The HL-T6187S has plenty of inputs to handle your current and future audio/video gear. There are two HD-compatible component video inputs, and three HDMI inputs — and for future-readiness, all accept signals up to 1080p. The standard PC input (also 1080p-compatible) lets you see life-sized web pages, spreadsheets and games with razor-sharp clarity.

Features

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.

DLP Chip by Texas Instruments: Samsung employs a DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors capable of switching on and off at 15,000 or more times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast-moving images.

Cinema Smooth 1080p LED Light Engine: Samsung's Cinema Smooth 1080p light engine produces razor-sharp pictures in 1080p with a new LED that replaces the arc lamp and color wheel typically found in DLP televisions. The LED will last the life of the TV, eliminating the need to replace the lamp every few years, plus is more energy efficient. The TV has a contrast ratio of up to 10,000:1, with outstanding colors and deep black levels.

Native Resolution: The television has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals and will display them as 1920 x 1080. All other input signals will also be displayed as 1920 x 1080.

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals. The TV also has a 181-channel NTSC analog tuner.

WISELINK: A rear-panel USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device, such as a USB Thumb drive, to view JPEG files and play MP3 audio files. You have access to the following functions:

  • Photo (JPEG) List: This menu shows JPEG files and folders saved on the USB device and allows you to do the following:

    • View: You can view individual photos by selecting them from the thumbnail display.

    • Rotate: This feature allows you to rotate the selected image by 90°, 180°, or 270°.

    • Zoom: You can enlarge a picture 2x or 4x. Once the image is enlarged, you can move it around onscreen.

    • Slide Show: You can play files on the USB device in a slide show. You can adjust the slide show speed to Slow, Normal, or Fast. You can also choose an MP3 file on the USB device to play as background music during the slide show. The repeat function allows you to play the slide show again and again.

  • MP3 List: This menu shows MP3 files saved on the USB device and allows you to play them back.

Cinema Smooth Film Mode: Samsung's 3:2 pulldown correction circuitry senses motion found in unconverted 480i DVD video based on 24 fps film productions. This is especially important when converting to a progressive video image, the result is an elimination of visible motion artifacts. Note: This feature is only available when using analog signals from component, S-Video, or composite connections.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's DNIe makes input signals sharper, clearer, and more lifelike. It's advanced image processors and six-times density enhancer help to create true-to-life colors and high contrast, while virtually eliminating digital artifacts.

My Color Control Mode: The My Color Control Mode lets you select predefined settings that affect the skin, sky, and grass tones in a picture without affecting other colors on the screen. You can choose one of the following predefined settings: Standard, Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow or Custom. The Custom setting allows you to individually set and store color saturation values between 0 and 50 for Red, Blue, Green, Pink, and Yellow. If desired, you can instantly reset the colors to the factory default.

Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings
  • Dynamic: for viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
  • Movie: for viewing the TV in low light, or when playing video games

Picture Adjustments: In addition to the three picture modes, you can also manually adjust the settings for contrast, brightness, sharpness, color and tint.

Color Weakness Enhancement: The Color Weakness Enhancement feature adjusts the Red, Blue, or Green color to enhance the picture according to the user's particular color weakness.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Zoom 1: magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Zoom 2: magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Wide Fit: enlarges the aspect ratio of the picture to fit the entire screen

  • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

  • Just Scan: allows you to see the full image without any truncation when DTV (1080i), HDMI (1080i, 1080p), or Component (1080i, 1080p) signals are input.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel by lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or by raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low.

Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: for watching movies

  • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialogue

  • Custom: allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

Game Mode: If you connect the TV to a game console, such as a PlayStation or Xbox, you can enjoy a more realistic gaming experience by selecting the game menu. In the Game Mode menu, you can select the following:

  • Adventure: It provides clear images for the game implementing dark areas such as caves and rooms.

  • Sports: It synchronizes image and sound when implementing fast moving pictures like sports games.

  • Standard: Use this function in general cases.

SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats. In the Sound menu, you can turn the effect on or off.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. There are three independent On/Off timer functions that can be set to operate once, every day, Monday through Friday, Monday through Saturday, or Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the "On Timer Volume", you can also set the specific channel or playback contents such as photo or audio files from a connected USB device.

PC Display: The PC input allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output, allowing you to use the TV as a high-resolution computer monitor. In PC mode, you can adjust the following picture quality settings: Coarse and Fine, both of which allow you to remove picture noise.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, set-top boxes, and DVD players.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Side Panel Inputs: In order to create a slimmer depth, the TV's inputs and outputs are located on a side panel which is angled 45° from the rear panel. Only the AC plug input is found on the rear panel.

HDMI: This input consists of three HDMI terminals. The HDMI terminals can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. One of the HDMI terminals can be used for a DVI-equipped component. A separate analog audio connection and a DVI-to-HDMI adapter will be needed. The HDMI jacks accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

PC: You can connect a PC to this TV using a D-Sub cable or DVI. The PC input consists of a stereo 3.5mm audio minijack and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. If you wish to connect your PC via DVI, you will need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable, and a 3.5mm miniplug-to-RCA audio adapter cable (in order to use the HDMI 3 input and the corresponding DVI audio left and right RCA jacks).

Component Video Inputs: The 2 sets of component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

Digital Audio Output: Through the optical digital output, you can connect the TV to a receiver/amplifier with a digital input. Not only will you get clean digital audio, but you will be able to listen to the TV audio (specifically programs broadcast in surround) in 5.1-channel surround on devices that can decode Dolby Digital 5.1-channel audio.

WISELINK: The WISELINK input is a female Type A USB jack that allows you to plug in a USB Mass Storage device (i.e. USB Thumb drive) for viewing JPEG photo files or MP3 Audio files, or both together. The WISELINK jack supports FAT 16 or FAT 32 only, and is USB 1.1 compatible.

RS-232C: You can control the TV via the RS-232C serial port.

Antenna Inputs: Two independent cables or antennas can be connected to the "Ant 1 In" or "Ant 2 In" terminals. For example, you can use the Ant 1 In RF Coaxial jack for a cable input, and the Ant 2 In jack for an over-the-air input.

Happy Customer

Written By Tad, Lamoni, IA on Wednesday, February 27, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went from a 57" Mitsubishi DLP to this TV. I went with this one because it was 4" larger and because it was an LED DLP, so there was no costly bulb replacement looming. I couldn't be happier with my purchase after 1 week of use. Great TV, easy to use, and convenient that the connections are kind of on the side/rear of the TV. They're much easier to get to than my other TV was. This looks amazing when paired with our PS3, watching Blu-Ray movies. Buy one! Buy it now!!

Samsung HL-T6187S

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We've had the tv just under a month and it's great! My husband put in a surround sound isystem n our new "media" room and it feels like we're at the movie theatre. The pix was so so at first because we didn't have the HD cable box but once we got that installed, it made such a difference. We're really glad we purchased this tv- in my opinion, it is comparable to the lcds and plasmas out there.

Delivery was great also. I knew the tv was on backorder when I placed the order and expected delivery around Dec 18. I then received an email saying we would not get it until the 1st of the year. Although my husband was bummed, it was ok since we got such a great deal on it. We were pleasantly surprised when the tv was delivered a few days before Christmas. The white glove delivery was super fast- they were in and out in 15 minutes.

A Quality Purchase

Written By Brandon, Dothan, AL on Saturday, June 23, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Samsung definitely has their act together when it comes to DLP and LCD tvs. I had friends and family who owned one of each beforehand, so I got to see real world reliabilty before my purchase.
The LED engine is a great improvement over the old color wheel technology which can sometimes produce a "rainbow" effect on screen. Not to mention you don't have to be concerned with the bulb burning out after 5000 hours.
I did find several other online retailers offering much lower prices than Crutchfield's. However, once you factor in shipping and a warranty (and you are getting a warranty aren't you? Peace of mind is always a worthy purchase) combined with a friendly and knowledgeable staff, it balances out fairly well in the end.
Here's another cool HL-T6187S feature. I have an analog cable feed, but once the tv's digital tuner completed its channel scan - I began picking up a slew of other stations including hd channels.
The Samsung picture and product quality is amazing. A great investment.
