Our take on the Samsung HP-T5054

NFL Samsung HDTV

Plasma HDTVs like this one deliver the vibrant, detailed pictures that make high-definition video so addictive. The affordably-priced Samsung HP-T5054 delivers a compelling viewing experience whether it's daytime or nighttime.

Hang onto your rabbit ears — over-the-air HD reception is free
The HP-T5054 receives both analog and digital over-the-air broadcasts (antenna required). With this HDTV in your system, you'll no longer need to worry about the coming analog signal shutoff in 2009. Also, a "QAM" tuner allows cable TV subscribers to tune in most unscrambled channels without using a set-top box.

Samsung knows how important picture contrast is
Samsung has addressed one of the few drawbacks to plasma TVs: the tendency to reflect a room's ambient light sources. Their FilterBright anti-glare filter reduces reflections noticeably while maintaining ultra-high picture contrast. Afternoon ballgames look crisp and bright, while movies at night feature rich blacks and realistic shadow detail.

Plenty of ways to expand your entertainment options
You'll find a total of 7 A/V inputs, with HD-compatible component video and HDMI inputs for your highest-quality sources. Hook up your PC or Mac to this set and the Picture-in-Picture feature can simultaneously display a sitcom and a spreadsheet. Some less-robust plasmas play it safe by leaving out a PC input, but the HP-T5054 includes effective anti-burn-in features.

Features

Integrated HDTV Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals. The TV also has a 181-channel NTSC analog tuner. An additional QAM tuner decodes unscrambled digital cable signals.

Native Resolution: The native display resolution is 1366 x 768 and all inputs are scaled for display at that resolution. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

Screen Burn Protection: To reduce the possibility of screen burn-in, this TV is equipped with a pixel shift function, which minutely moves pixels on the display horizontally or vertically. You can set the number of vertical lines and horizontal dots to shift, plus the time interval for each pixel shift. If screen burn has occurred, you can select an all-white screen or a scrolling signal pattern to help remove screen burn artifacts. When you watch TV with a screen ratio of 4:3, the screen is prevented from any damage by adjusting the white balance on both the extreme left and right sides of the television's screen.

FilterBright: FilterBright is a powerful anti-reflective film that absorbs external light and transmits internal light, thereby increasing the contrast levels and preventing unwanted reflection. In bright daylight, FilterBright creates high contrast with pure black to show clearer image details and generate superb dark area representation.

High Contrast Ratio: The contrast ratio is 15,000:1; giving you brilliant brightness, contrast, and detail from PC, TV, and video images.

Panel Life Expectancy: The plasma flat panel display has an estimated life of 60,000 hours; equating to over 27 years at 6 hours of viewing per day.

Note: The estimated life figure represents phosphor "half-life" viewing time under normal conditions.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's exclusive Digital Natural Image engine dramatically improves the picture by enhancing the contrast, detail, and white balance, and reducing noise. DNIe can be turned off, or a demo mode shows a split screen with a DNIe enhanced picture on the right and DNIe off on the left.

Natural True Color: The HP-T5054 can display Natural True Color with Samsung's 18-bit processor, rendering a natural and vivid picture.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Zoom 1: vertically enlarges the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Zoom 2: vertically enlarges the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Wide Fit: proportionally enlarges the picture to fit the entire screen

  • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode with pillars on the left and right of the screen

  • Just Scan: see the full 720p or 1080i image with no resizing when an HDMI input is used

Picture Control: each input saves its own setting:

  • Automatic Picture Settings: choose one of three automatic picture settings:
    • Standard: resets the standard factory settings
    • Dynamic: increases clarity and sharpness
    • Movie: natural image without enhancements
  • Manual: manually adjust and store the following settings:
    • Contrast
    • Brightness
    • Sharpness
    • Color
    • Tint (G/R)
  • Color Tone: adjust the overall color tone using one of five presets:
    • Cool 1
    • Cool 2
    • Normal
    • Warm 1
    • Warm 2
  • Black Adjust: screen depth is adjusted using Black Level, settings include:
    • Off: turns off the black adjust feature
    • Low: sets black color depth to low
    • Medium: sets black color depth to medium
    • High: sets black color depth to high
  • HDMI Black Level: the black level can be set to Normal or Low when using an HDMI (RGB) input
  • Dynamic Contrast: adjust contrast to optimize the picture:
    • Off: turns off the dynamic contrast adjustment feature
    • Low: sets dynamic contrast to low
    • Medium: sets dynamic contrast to medium
    • High: sets dynamic contrast to high
  • Gamma: adjust the middle brightness of the picture
  • Color Space: select the color space for the most natural color:
    • Wide: offers deep and rich tone
    • Auto: automatically adjusts color tone based on the program source
  • White Balance: adjust the color temperature for more natural colors
    • R offset: adjusts red color darkness
    • G offset: adjusts green color darkness
    • B offset: adjusts blue color darkness
    • R gain: adjusts red color brightness
    • G gain: adjusts green color brightness
    • B gain: adjusts blue color brightness
    • Reset: return to factory default
  • My Color: adjust to your personal preferences:
    • Pink: darken or lighten the pink colors
    • Green: darken or lighten the green colors
    • Blue: darken or lighten the blue colors
    • White: darken or lighten the white colors
    • Reset: return to factory default
  • Edge Enhancement: edge enhancement emphasizes the boundaries of an object, it can be turned off if you prefer
  • Active Color: active color emphasizes the colors of the sky and grass, for a more vivid picture

Film Mode: The film mode automatically senses and processes film signals (vs. video) for all sources and adjusts the picture for optimum quality.

Game Mode: The Game mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response, and enhances the sounds of your games.

Input Source Names: You can assign a preprogrammed name to each of the inputs. When input naming is completed, you will no longer have to remember which component is connected to each input when selecting a source to watch. Source names include VCR, DVD, D-VHS, Cable STB, HD STB, Satellite STB, PVR STB, AV Receiver, DVD Receiver, Game, Camcorder, DVD Combo, PC, VOD STB, and TV.

Channel Labels: Each analog channel programmed into memory can be labeled with a name up to 5 characters. Digital channels names are already assigned and cannot be edited.

Favorite Channel: You can create a list of your favorite channels and recall the list using the FAV.CH button on the remote.

Digital Close Captioning: You can customize the closed caption display characteristics by changing the background color, foreground color, text size, and font when viewing digital channels.

PC-Capable: This unit has a 15-pin D-Sub (RGB) input that allows you to use it as a high-resolution computer monitor. The HDMI 1 input can also be used with a computer. The TV can be set to automatically adjust to the video signals received, or you can use the setup menu to adjust the screen quality and position. No cables are supplied for connecting the TV to a PC.

Picture-In-Picture (PIP): The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to watch two video sources (TV, VCR, DVD) simultaneously. The TV has only one tuner, so you cannot watch two TV channels at the same time. There are three PIP views: Double (side-by-side split screens, each with a 4:3 aspect ratio), Double Wide (side-by-side split screens, each with a 16:9 aspect ratio), or standard picture-in-picture (a small window inside the full screen). In the standard picture-in-picture mode, the inset PIP window can be moved to any of the screen's four corners. PIP will not work while the V-chip is in use.

Freeze: The still button allows you to freeze an image on the screen, it can only be activated from the remote control. When you freeze the picture the audio continues normally.

Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.

Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): In a weak signal area reception might be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Automatic Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: for watching movies

  • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialog

  • Custom: adjust the 5-band EQ; 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology for playing 5.1 multi-channel content using only two speakers, it delivers a virtual surround sound experience through two speakers (internal or external), it is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels.

Function Help: With the function help feature turned on, each time you highlight a function in the menu, a brief description of the function is also displayed.

V-Chip: The V-Chip feature automatically locks out programs that are deemed inappropriate for children based on the user selected parental guidelines. The user must enter a 4-digit password before any of the V-Chip restriction are set up or changed.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The three On/Off timers allow you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You also choose the On Timer's channel and Volume. The on and off timers work independently of one another.

On/Off Melody: A unique melody plays when the TV is turned on and off. The melody volume is adjustable, or you can turn this feature off if you prefer.

Anynet+: Anynet+ is an AV network system that enables you to control other components with your Samsung TV's remote. The Anynet+ system can be used only with Samsung AV devices that support the Anynet+ feature and are connected with HDMI 1.3 cables. The Anynet+ feature must be turned on in the menu to function. Anynet+ can support up to 12 AV devices in total.

outstanding performance

Written By earl, washington, pa. on Thursday, January 17, 2008

Once again, you can only expect the outstanding service & support from chrutchfield.
This is my 4th HD Tv. that i have purchase from chrutchfield & i'am delited.
I presently have 3 lcds tvs' & 1 Samsung 50" plasma tv.
I half to say that i honestly believe that this samsung HPT-5054 beats my other HD-Tvs'.
The colors , contrasts & very smooth blacks & sharpness are more natural & overall performance are similar to my old 36" toshiba tube tv.

The only hang-up is possible screen burn-in but you can count of Samsung to rectify the situation with their technical adchievements that they incorporated into this tv. I have no problems with this.

With the price & overall quality of this plasma tv. I do highly recommend this tv to anyone seeking a top notch Samsung plasma.

Great looking TV for the family room

Written By Tom, Denver, NC on Tuesday, December 11, 2007

I am very pleased with color and clarity of the picture from this TV. I purchased this TV after doing considerable amount of research on the Internet and found this to be the best value for my particular situation and budget. I did not feel that 1080i was that critical, since we are sitting about 10 feet from the screen and there is very little programming in 1080i in the first place. DirecTV HD looks spectacular on the screen, which is what I was going for. In a couple of years, when 1080i is common place for television, then we can use this screen in a play room or master bedroom. For now, I would recommend this television if your application is similar to mine.

Samsung 50 Incher

Written By Michael, Abilene, Texas on Thursday, November 08, 2007

After many months of research I stumble across this 50" plasma from Samsung. With all the "extras" Crutchfield decided to include at my time of purchase, I couldn't pass it up. It's lighter than I thought it would be, I have played with LCDs this past year... but the latest (and farthest) growth with plasma technology told me to go for it. Hung it on the Famliy Room wall using a movable mount recommended at checkout along with a upscaling DVD player. Everything looks great, i'm a lifelong DirecTV HD customer and the programming looks aweseome. If you want the FULL HD experience, be prepared not to stop with this purchase: consider satallite provider, quality audio/video cables, power protection, and mounting. Get the big picture in mind from Crutchfield's learning center before you buy-there's a lot to get before you can truely enjoy a television like this one, it'd be a waste to run plain standard cable. Be sure to register it online with Samsung when you get home to add 2 months for the warrenty. But anyways, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, is a work of art for any room, get ready for the drools of guests. Crutchfield may be a few dollars higher than other online retailers for some items, but trust me, it's well worth it. Hurry and get this set up in HD for the Super Bowl NOW!
