Our take on the Samsung LN-S5296D

NFL Samsung HDTV
Get High-Def Programming

For their top-of-the-line "96-Series" HDTVs, Samsung really focuses on the "three Cs" of picture quality: clarity, color and contrast. The 52" LN-S5296D has full 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution — that's nearly twice as many as the 1366 x 768 pixels found on the typical 50" plasma. 1080p is a pixel-perfect match for most HDTV broadcasts, as well as the new high-definition disc formats: HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Thanks to advances in LCD panel and backlight design, you'll see picture contrast, black level and color accuracy that are now much closer to what good plasma TVs deliver. The 6000:1 dynamic contrast ratio spec is one of the highest we've seen. And Samsung's "wide color gamut" backlight helps the LN-S5296D reproduce 92% of the broadcast TV color range (compared to only about 72% for conventional LCDs and 76% for tube TVs).

The "Digital Cable Ready" LN-S5296D can receive over-the-air and cable HDTV programs without the need for a separate tuner box (to make full use of the built-in cable tuner, ask your service provider about a CableCARD). There are plenty of inputs for your other video gear, including digital HDMI and IEEE 1394, which provide flawless picture quality and offer the ease of single-cable hookup.

This is a dual-mode display, so your computer can join the party, too. And the gamer in your household will love the enhanced Game Mode. Samsung consulted with Microsoft engineers to develop a set of picture and sound enhancements that optimize the response and realism of gaming.

Features

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The LN-S5296D has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals.

CableCARD Slot: This TV has a back panel CableCARD slot that allows digital cable reception without a set-top box. CableCARDs will be available from your local cable provider.

Native Resolution: The LN-S5296D has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080 and displays program images in 1080p. The HDMI inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals, the component video input will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals; all inputs are displayed as 1920 x 1080.

High Contrast Ratio: The contrast ratio of this TV is 6000:1, which gives you brilliant brightness and contrast for superior picture and detail from both PC and TV images.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's exclusive Digital Natural Image engine dramatically improves the picture by enhancing the contrast, detail, white balance and reducing noise.

10-bit Processing: Samsung's 10-bit processing method produces 12.8 billion lifelike colors to ensure a more natural and vivid picture and aids in video signal processing of analog sources.

Wiselink: A side-panel USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device to view JPEG files and play MP3 audio files. You have access to the following functions:

  • Photo (JPEG) List: This menu shows JPEG files and folders saved on the USB device and allows you to do the following:

    • View: You can view individual photos by selecting them from the thumbnail display.

    • Rotate: This feature allows you to rotate the selected image by 90°, 180°, or 270°.

    • Zoom: You can enlarge a picture 2x or 4x. Once the image is enlarged, you can move it around onscreen.

    • Slide Show: You can play files on the USB device in a slide show. You can adjust the slide show speed to Slow, Normal, or Fast. You can also choose an MP3 file on the USB device to play as background music during the slide show. The repeat function allows you to play the slide show again and again.

  • MP3 List: This menu shows MP3 files saved on the USB device and allows you to play them back.

Automatic Picture Settings: You can choose one of the following picture settings, each input stores its own setting:

  • Standard: Resets the standard factory settings
  • Dynamic: For viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
  • Movie: For viewing the TV in low light
  • Custom: Allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, tint, and color tone

Enhanced Game Mode: The Game mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response, and enhances the sounds of your games.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Zoom 1: vertically enlarges the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Zoom 2: vertically enlarges the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Wide Fit: proportionally enlarges the picture to fit the entire screen without changing the aspect ratio

  • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

Input Source Names: You can assign a name for the component connected to each of the inputs. When input naming is completed, you will no longer have to remember which component is connected to each input when selecting a source to watch.

Channel Labels: Each analog channel programmed into memory can be labeled with a name up to 5 characters. Digital channels names are already assigned and cannot be edited.

Favorite Channel: You can create a list of your favorite channels and recall the list using the FAV.CH button on the remote.

PC-Capable: This unit has a 15-pin D-Sub (RGB) input that allows you to use it as a high-resolution computer monitor. The TV can be set to automatically adjust to the video signals received, or you can use the setup menu to adjust the screen quality and position. No cables are supplied for connecting the TV to a PC.

Picture-In-Picture (PIP): The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to watch two video sources (TV, VCR, DVD) simultaneously. The TV has only one tuner, so you cannot watch two TV channels at the same time. There are three PIP views: Double (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio), Double Wide (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio), or standard picture-in-picture (a small window inside the full screen). In the standard picture-in-picture mode, the inset PIP window can be moved to any of the screen's four corners. PIP will not work when the V-chip is in use.

Picture Freeze: This feature allows you to freeze an image on the screen. This feature can only be activated from the remote control. When you freeze the picture the audio continues normally.

Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.

Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): When the TV's antenna setting is on "Air," instead of "Cable," sometimes reception can be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Automatic Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: Resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: For watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: For watching movies

  • Speech: For watching a show that is mostly dialogue

  • Custom: Allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multi-channel content using only two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.

Function Help: With the function help feature turned on, each time you highlight a function in the menu, a brief description of the function is also displayed.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You also choose the On Timer's channel and Volume. The on and off timers work independently of one another.

On/Off Melody: A unique melody plays when the TV is turned on and off. You can turn this feature off if you prefer.

Mounting Options

Detachable Stand: The LN-S5296D comes with a table-top stand for easy placement on top of a counter or table. On the stand, the TV can swivel 20° in either direction.

Wall Mounting Option: The table-top stand can be removed so the TV can be wall mounted using an optional wall-mount bracket.

Wall Mounting: You can mount this display on the wall using an optional wall-mount bracket. The TV has four threaded screw holes spaced to accommodate many universal wall mount brackets. The horizontal hole spacing is 23-9/16", while the vertical hole spacing is 15-5/8". The holes will accept M8 (8mm) screws.

Kensington Lock: When mounting the monitor in a public place, you can secure it with an optional anti-theft device called a Kensington Lock. This TV has a slot on the rear panel to accommodate a Kensington Lock device.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, DVD players, and set top boxes.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

USB Port: The Type A USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device.

HDMI: This input consists of two HDMI terminals. The HDMI terminals can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. One of the HDMI terminals can be used for a DVI-equipped component. A separate analog audio connection and a DVI-to-HDMI adapter will be needed. PC: This input consists of a stereo mini-jack and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. This jack allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output. When using the RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack, you must use the PC Audio input for your audio connection.

Component Video Inputs: The 2 sets of component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

D-Net: The TV has two 4-pin IEEE1394 jacks for use with digital VCRs and set-top boxes for digital audio and video data. The D-Net jacks also support A/V device control and signal routing, digital video editing and home networking.

AWESOME TV

Written By Brenda, Everett, WA on Tuesday, May 01, 2007

I purchased this TV as a replacement for a 36" tube TV. I upgraded my DIRECTV service to HD/DVR on this TV and purchased a new 1000w Home Theater system that is connected through HDMI connection as well. This system upconverts DVDs to close to HD quality. So far in watching the HD programming or DVDs I am totally satisfied with the purchase of this Samsung 52" TV.

I highly suggest if you are going to spend this kind of money on a QUALITY television, spend a hundred more or so on QUALITY connection cables. HDMI is the best picture and audio quality you will receive.
I had to "tweak" some of the color/contrast/brightness settings to my preferences but once that was done I was completely satisfied with making this purchase.

I did A LOT of research before purchasing this TV. I knew from the start Samsung was the one I wanted, but I also looked at the others. Samsung out ranked a lot of the other brands in many categories that were important to me, so this Samsung 52" HDTV was the one!!

This television is a beautiful addition to any room. It has the glossy piano finish bordering the screen and the base it sits on is the same too. So far my preference is to have it sitting on a TV cabinet verses wall mounting it, but I bet it would look great either way.

Crutchfield has exceeded my expectations with my ordering process!! I ordered this television on April 17th and it was delivered and set up in my living room on April 25th. Not bad for it going from coast to coast!!

If you're teetering on making this purchase...I wouldnt teeter any longer, add it to your cart today -- you won't be disappointed!

Great except for the clouds

Written By Seth, Bronx, New York on Saturday, February 03, 2007

TV is fantastic in daylight or at night with bright content. Also great in a glare prone environment. Unfortunately it suffers from the clouding issue plaguing many of the Samsung and Sony large screen LCD's. This is basically light seeping through the LCD panel in very dark scenes in some areas which looks like light patches or clouds. There are numerous examples of this issue on the web but I had hoped it was being resolved. I will be exchanging or returning this set as for the price of this tv should not have such a blatant defect.

Samsung LN-S5296D

Written By John, Fort Lauderdale, FL on Tuesday, January 23, 2007

I just received this great TV yesterday. I love the picture quality in HD. SD pictures are not bad, but I was expecting a little better, but perhaps it's because of the resolution of the digital cable system. I have not yet graduated to HD DVDs yet, however I hooked up my Samsung DVD player to it using the S Video connection because the player does not have a HDMI connector and the component connector has a malfunction. The TV did a magnificent job displaying the S Video picture in the Movie Mode.

The only other flaw that I found with this TV is the inacuracy of the green in some scenes. I corrected this using the Custom mode making the picture a little brighter and lowering the color saturation a bit.

The pedistal base looks very nice. I opted to put the TV on a stand rather than on a wall.

I highly reccommend this TV to anybody who sits more than 6 feet away from it. It is very enjoyable to watch HDTV programs with it.

Crutchfield was fantastic with it's delivery. I ordered the TV on a Saturday and it was delivered to my home on the second Monday (just over a week).

Samsung LN-S5296D

Written By Sean, Sneads Ferry, NC on Tuesday, January 09, 2007

I've owned this television for two weeks now. A very nice television, went from a 32" to this 52" 1080P, the HD programs on cable and XBOX 360 are very sharp and crisp. There is a game mode feature you can activate that makes gameplay great. The stand that comes with the TV is pretty solid, and I didn't feel like rigging a wall mount. There are a good amount of connections, I could use one more component hookup than just two, since all of my stuff(DVD Player,XBOX 360, Cable Box, etc.) still use component. Shipping was free and I recieved the box with no damage, and the drop indicator was good to go. So far I have two complaints, 1) navigating the menu is like waiting for paint to dry, too slow! 2) In the past few days, when I turn on the TV, the sound comes on... but no video, regardless of input. You can't pull up the menu or anything else on the screen. I have to turn it off and back on again after waiting for a minute to get the video to come back. I have the TV plugged into a Monster brand surge protecter that I have had for years with no problems. I would like to think that spending $4500 would buy you a quality TV set... we'll see.

YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Written By californiajones, Germantown, TN on Sunday, November 05, 2006

IF YOU BUY ONE, YOU WON'T BE SORRY. My 31 inch Panasonic tube finally bit the dust after 12 years, so I upgraded to HD a year earlier than planned--the good news is Crutchfield has the BEST no interest deals anywhere. I got a year and 3 months no interest/no payments. Thank goodness my tube died! I needed a bigger screen in that room anyway. 52 inches is perfect if you are 12-20 feet from the screen. I orignally intended to get a Pioneer 50 inch plasma, but after doing more research, i realized LCD was a better choice. 3 key deciding factors: 1. 1080P--better resolution for the new DVD formats that will be common soon enough 2. glare--we have a lot of windows in the room, and a plasma screen is high glare glass 3. burn-in--may not be a big deal, but with all the different aspect ratios these days, why risk it? I originally was sold on the Sony XBR LCD in black. I do not understand why Sony charges extra for black over silver. Also, I could not get over the goofy looking plexiglass edging with a silver frame around it on all of the Sonys. So I looked around a little more. At a retail store, I saw the 46 inch Samsung 1080P LCD right under the Sony. The picture was identical. I believe Samsung makes the screens for Sony. The Samsung is beautiful--a simple black frame. Ad to that a price savings, and it was an easy decision. PERFORMANCE: this TV is top notch. Color, Contrast, easy-to-use menu(adjust down the color saturation and up the brighness--shadows are too dark with default settings). The sound is as good as any of the flat panels, ok for normal TV watching. An A/V receiver w/external speakers is needed if you want audio punch. NOTE: nice pedistal stand!
