Our take on the Samsung LN-T3253H

by Steve Kindig
Samsung
NFL Samsung HDTV

The handsome Samsung LN-T3253H 32" HDTV can transform a corner of your living room into a mini theater. Its slim, compact design is also ideal for a bedroom, office or den.

The LN-T3253H employs one of Samsung's more advanced LCD panel designs. It provides better contrast and black level, and a wider viewing angle so the picture maintains good color and contrast even if you're sitting off to the side. This high-definition set includes built-in tuners for digital and analog over-the-air signals, plus a "QAM" cable TV tuner that lets you tune in unscrambled channels without a set-top box (cable service is required).

The LN-T3253H's "jack pack" includes several inputs for high-resolution sources. For future-readiness, there are three HDMI inputs to accommodate the growing number of HD satellite receivers and "upconverting" DVD players that use this digital connection. There's a dedicated input for connecting your computer, too. And one other cool feature is Samsung's Game Mode, which speeds up image processing and enhances the sounds of your games.

Features

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The LN-T3253H has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals.

Native Resolution: The LN-T3253H has a display resolution of 1366 x 768 and scales all inputs for display at 768p. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

Wiselink: A side-panel USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device (MSC) to view JPEG files and play MP3 audio files. You have access to the following functions:

    • White: darken or lighten the white colors
    • Reset: return to factory default
  • Edge Enhancement: edge enhancement emphasizes the boundaries of an object, it can be turned off if you prefer
  • Active Color: active color emphasizes the colors of the sky and grass, for a more vivid picture

Game Mode: The Game mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response, and enhances the sounds of your games.

Film Mode: You can manually set the frame rate to film (vs. video) when using the TV tuner, composite input, S-video input, or a component video with 480i input signal.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Zoom 1: vertically enlarges the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Zoom 2: vertically enlarges the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Wide Fit: proportionally enlarges the picture to fit the entire screen without changing the aspect ratio

  • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode with pillars on the left and right of the screen

  • Just Scan: see the full 720p or 1080i image with no resizing when an HDMI input is used

Input Source Names: You can assign a preprogrammed name to each of the inputs. When input naming is completed, you will no longer have to remember which component is connected to each input when selecting a source to watch. Source names include VCR, DVD, D-VHS, Cable STB, HD STB, Satellite STB, PVR STB, AV Receiver, DVD Receiver, Game, Camcorder, DVD Combo, PC, VOD STB, and TV.

Channel Labels: Each analog channel programmed into memory can be labeled with a name up to 5 characters. Digital channels names are already assigned and cannot be edited.

Favorite Channel: You can create a list of your favorite channels and recall the list using the FAV.CH button on the remote.

PC-Capable: This unit has a 15-pin D-Sub (RGB) input that allows you to use it as a high-resolution computer monitor. The HDMI 1 input can also be used with a computer. The TV can be set to automatically adjust to the video signals received, or you can use the setup menu to adjust the screen quality and position. No cables are supplied for connecting the TV to a PC.

Picture-In-Picture (PIP): The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to watch two video sources (TV, VCR, DVD) simultaneously. The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to view an analog TV broadcast on the PIP screen (sub-picture) when the main picture is from an external device connected by HDMI, Component or PC. The TV has only one tuner, so you cannot watch two TV channels at the same time. There are three PIP views: Double Window (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio), Double Wide (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio), or standard picture-in-picture (a small window inside the full screen). In the standard picture-in-picture mode, the inset PIP window can be moved to any of the screen's four corners. PIP will not work while the V-chip or xvYCC is in use.

Freeze: The still button allows you to freeze an image on the screen, it can only be activated from the remote control. When you freeze the picture the audio continues normally.

Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.

Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): In a weak signal area reception might be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Automatic Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: for watching movies

  • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialog

  • Custom: adjust the 5-band EQ; 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology for playing 5.1 multi-channel content using only two speakers, it delivers a virtual surround sound experience through two speakers (internal or external), it is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats

Function Help: With the function help feature turned on, each time you highlight a function in the menu, a brief description of the function is also displayed.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The three On/Off timers allow you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You also choose the On Timer's channel and Volume. The on and off timers work independently of one another.

On/Off Melody: A unique melody plays when the TV is turned on and off. The melody volume is adjustable, or you can turn this feature off if you prefer.

Anynet+: Anynet+ is an AV network system that enables you to control other components with your Samsung TV's remote. The Anynet+ system can be used only with Samsung AV devices that support the Anynet+ feature and are connected with HDMI 1.3 cables. The Anynet+ feature must be turned on in the menu to function. Anynet+ can support up to 12 AV devices in total.

Great TV!!

Written By Mickey, Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, March 11, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this tv about 2 weeks ago and it works great. The colors are sharp and bright, it makes my xbox 360 games come to life! The only problem so far, (and it may be my cable signal) is that sometimes my HD channels sometimes get kinda choppy and cut out. I dont have this issue while watching DVDs or playing xbox so I think maybe its a Comcast problem. For the price you cant beat it!

Overall Great!

Written By Roshan, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, March 11, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research with LCD televisions I purchased the Samsung LN-T3253H. After unpacking and setting up my television, I came across one issue. The television had a very annoying high pitch noise that would begin minutes after it was powered on. I called Samsung right away and realized it is a very common issue with this particular model and they quickly sent out a tech to repair the problem. Since then, I have been extremely pleased with the television and would recommend it to others.

Samsung LN T3253H

Written By Deborah, Towson, MD on Monday, January 14, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fabulous purchase! The picture is outstanding, way easy to get hooked up with my peripherals, and the resolution is beyond my expectations! Just needs a simple antenna and the most beautiful hi-def reception is yours! We don't have cable or satellite, and the ease of getting the set out of the box and in service was great. A friend recommended the Samsung and she was right!

Samsung LN-T3253H

Written By alove42, Portland, OR on Wednesday, December 12, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a very good set. Lots of connectors (3 HDMI is nice), attractive case, and good overall picture quality.

Cons: Its an LCD. The black level is not superb, but no worse than would be expected for a decent LCD. The backlight level can be adjusted for movies that you know are dark, though. If the internal speakers are muted (for connecting a home theater system) you cannot adjust the volume with the TV remote, which I could with my previous Toshiba. Its a small complaint, but it makes for more button pushing.

Pros: As stated before, lots of connectors, good for a smaller HT system. Picture quality is very good on SD and HD signals. HD perhaps not quite as crisp as my previous Toshiba CRT, but still very good. Setup and menu settings are detailed but not overly complex. Minimal motion blur on fast-moving scenes.

Overall, a good set. I'm not amazed, but it has worked reliably and consistently for several weeks now. I have not had any of the issues that the previous poster has had.
