About the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 Elite Edition Quadcopter

Eric A.

The go-anywhere drone

We have a kite festival in Central Virginia that my family and I always enjoy, but I have to admit that our photos of the event are always slightly disappointing. Shooting images of flying objects from an earthbound perspective lacks a certain immediacy.
The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 lets you shoot high-quality video and still photos from an aerial perspective.

The go-anywhere drone

We have a kite festival in Central Virginia that my family and I always enjoy, but I have to admit that our photos of the event are always slightly disappointing. Shooting images of flying objects from an earthbound perspective lacks a certain immediacy.

Take a Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 to just about any event, and you'll be able to shoot HD video and high-quality stills from a whole new angle. This quadcopter features a front-mounted action camera with 720p resolution. A free, downloadable app lets you remotely control the drone from an Apple®, Android™ or Windows® phone or tablet. Built-in Wi-Fi® gives the 'copter a range of approximately 165 feet.

Direct your own movie

The AR.Drone 2.0 can be programmed to perform smooth, movie-style tracking shots when used in Director mode ($3.99 in-app purchase). Menu options give you creative control over important camera functions like exposure, color saturation and white balance. You'll be able to monitor what you're shooting on your smartphone or tablet, and record as you go.

Put on an aerial show

The drone will stay very steady during filming, if that's what you need, but let's be honest: it's going to be fun to let it loose and see how it flies, too. Press dedicated buttons to command the AR.Drone 2.0 to perform a front-flip, back-flip, or barrel roll.

AR.Drone 2.0

Robust Structure: The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 is constructed of carbon fiber tubes and high-grade 30% fiber charged nylon plastic parts. Foam is used to isolate the drone's inertial center from the engine's vibration. A liquid repellent nano-coating is used on the ultrasound sensors. All parts are repairable or replaceable.

Indoor & Outdoor Hulls: The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 comes with expanded polypropylene (EPP) indoor and outdoor hulls for flying the drone indoors or outdoors. Avoid flying the AR.Drone 2.0 in wind conditions of over 9 mph. Dimensions are as follows:

  • With Outdoor Hull: 17.75" (w) x 4.25" (h) x 13.5" (d)
  • Without Indoor Hull: 20.125" (w) x 4.25" (h) x 20.0" (d)

Motors & Propellers: The AR.Drone 2.0 features four brushless in-runner motors and four propellers with self-lubricating bronze micro-ball bearings, tempered steel propeller shafts, and low-noise Nylatron gears; allowing you to fly high, fly fast, and far away from the ground.

Advanced Processors: The AR.Drone 2.0's on-board technology gives you extreme precision control and automatic stabilization features. It utilizes a 1GHz 32 bit ARM Cortex A8 processor with 800MHz video DSP TMS320DMC64x and features a 1Gbit DDR2 RAM. It also incorporates a 3 axis accelerometer (+/-50mg), 3 axis gyroscope (2000°/second), and a pressure sensor (+/-10 Pa).

Built-in WiFi: The AR.Drone 2.0 features built-in WiFi (802.11 b/g/n) to communicate with your Apple iOS or Android device via the AR Freeflight application. It has a range of 164'.

Auto-Pilot & Flip Function: The AR.Drone 2.0 is equipped with intuitive sensors that allow it to remain stable in the air, virtually flying itself. At startup, the AR.Drone 2.0 will automatically position itself at an altitude of between 50cm and 1m. The AR.Drone 2.0 even features the exclusive and patented Absolute Control piloting mode for beginners that can be adjusted with your growing expertise. Even cooler, you are able to flip the drone in 4 different directions with a press of a button from the AR Freeflight app on your Apple iOS or Android device.

Dual Cameras: The AR.Drone 2.0 is equipped with two cameras; a front camera and a vertical camera that can record video or capture photos.

  • Front Camera: The front camera features a CMOS image sensor and a 90° wide-angle lens that is capable of capturing up to 720p/30fps video or a still image.
  • Vertical Camera: The vertical camera features a CMOS image sensor and a 60° wide-angle lens that is capable of capturing up to QVGA video (320x240)/60fps or a still image.

HD Video & JPEG Recording: From the AR.Drone 2.0's built-in camera, record high definition (up to 720p) capture JPEG still images.

USB or Smartphone Recording: Video can be recorded to an inserted USB thumbdrive (sold separately); the USB device must have at least 100MB of free space. You can also record video to your Apple iOS or Android device via the AR Freeflight app.

Rechargeable Battery: The AR.Drone 2.0 is powered by a rechargeable lithium-polymer (1000mAh) battery which can provide up to 12 minutes of flight time. Charger is included to recharge the battery. Charging time is approximately 90 minutes with the included charging base. If the battery is running low, you will be requested to land safely. If you fail to land the AR.Drone 2.0 in due time, the autopilot will land the AR.Drone 2.0 automatically.

Remote Applications

AR Freeflight App: AR.FreeFlight is the primary application used to fly and pilot the AR.Drone 2.0 from your Apple (iOS 6.0+) or Android (OS 2.2+) mobile device. By tilting your Apple iOS or Android device you control the direction of the AR.Drone 2.0. Or, you can use the on-screen joysticks for control. When you release control, the AR.Drone 2.0 is instantly stabilized in the air. As you fly, the HD video is recorded and sent via WiFi directly to your device after you land. With one click, you can then upload your video from the user-friendly interface seamlessly to YouTube or share your pictures on Picasa.

Notes:

  • If you receive a phone call or an SMS while you are using the AR.Drone 2.0, the AR.Drone 2.0 will automatically land. If you accept the phone call or open the SMS, the flight application will close. If you refuse the call or do not open the SMS, you may continue using the AR.Drone 2.0.
  • If the distance between the AR.Drone 2.0 and the Smartphone becomes too large (approximately over 164', depending on the WiFi environment), then the two devices may disconnect from each other. If this happens, do not close the application on the Smartphone but move closer to the AR.Drone 2.0.

Director Mode: Accessible from the AR.FreeFlight app's main menu with an in-app purchase of $3.99, the Director Mode enables special settings of the AR.Drone 2.0 allowing a better stabilization of the flights, with pre production and post production settings that are available to fine tune videos. The Director mode lets you program automatic movements so that you can shoot great videos just like a movie director.

  • Drone Movement: Choose your type of drone movement - Traveling, Panorama, Crane, or Steady Mode
  • Camera Settings: The settings menu lets you fine tune exposure, color saturation, and white balance or choose from an array of camera presets to quickly find the setting that will fit your needs.
  • Compose Video Sequences: You can stop or take back the control at any time during the automatic moves. You can also choose to compose a more complex sequence by switching from one move to another or adjusting the speed in real time.
  • Post Production: Post-production settings allow to get better stabilized videos. In addition of the smoother automatic movement, you can choose your level of stabilization. The graphics on the bottom left corner of the app show you how unstable your video is. Select the sequences you want to stabilize and the app software will process it.
  • Stabilization: The app's stabilization system uses the AR.Drone 2.0's sensors at 30Hz to know exactly what the positioning was during the initial video records, for every video frame. You will be able to correct up to 15° inclination misalignment caused by wind conditions.
  • Sharing: All videos made with Director Mode can be shared on YouTube and then appear on your AR.Drone Academy account.

Emergency Button: Press the Emergency button of the AR Freeflight app only in case of emergency. If you press the Emergency button, the engines will shut off and the AR.Drone 2.0 will fall out of the air.
