Hands-free Parrot control
You've been thinking about replacing your car's stock radio with a Bluetooth®-enabled, feature-packed Parrot ASTEROID receiver, but you don't want to lose the convenience of your steering wheel audio controls. Parrot's UNIKA interface will make your decision easier.
Use those steering wheel audio controls
The Parrot UNIKA interface lets you connect your steering wheel audio controls to your Parrot ASTEROID receiver. With this interface installed, you'll be able to change a preset, control the volume on your radio or phone, or use any of the other steering wheel controls you've grown accustomed to. Your Parrot receiver puts a world of entertainment at your fingertips, and the UNIKA lets you get to it without taking your hands off the wheel.
You can also use this adapter with select Parrot Bluetooth kits. Once installed, you'll be able to control your music's volume and mute for incoming calls with your steering wheel controls.
The compact, lightweight UNIKA fits in tight space, so you can install it out of sight. It comes with a universal cable that fits most vehicles, and it works with all CAN-bus protocols and resistor ladders. You can install the UNIKA yourself if you have experience installing car audio gear. Warranty: 1 year
Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the UNIKA adapter is compatible with your vehicle.
Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface.
What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?
Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.
Parrot UNIKA Reviews
Average Customer Review:
2013 Mitsubishi Lancer
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Comes with absolutely zero installation or programming instructions. Had to google search everything to figure out how to connect this thing. In the end I returned it and Crutchfield sent me an ASWC-1 with a Parrot adapter. That went in easy and works like a dream.
Cons: No instructions. Confusing wiring. Lots of strange plugs that don't go anywhere. Impossible to program.
Steering wheel controls for your Parrot
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This device is a necessary evil if you are planning a Parrot Asteroid Smart install while retaining the factory steering wheel controls. It is nearly impossible for the average joe to figure out how to wire this unit without the help of Crutchfield Technical Support (Which they did a GREAT job helping me!). It comes with essentially no documentation and the wire color standards are not standard. I have installed about a dozen stereos and this was the first time I called for help. In my 2013 Focus I was only able to get the volume up and down buttons to read which was a big disappointment since I never was able to get the next/prev and pickup/hangup buttons to register.
Pros: It may allow you to use your steering wheel control with the Asteroid Smart.
Cons: Frustrating to figure out how to wire it.

Compatibility: The Parrot UNIKA is a steering wheel control interface that allows you to control Parrot Asteroid units or Parrot MKi Bluetooth kits (all sold separately) directly from your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls. The UNIKA can work with car protocols such as CAN, K-BUS, or resistive systems. The UNIKA is compatible with over 200 vehicle models from 34 different automotive brands. Please consult Crutchfield's Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.
Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Parrot recommends having this steering wheel control interface installed by a professional installer.
Dip Switches: Use the dip-switches (1-4) on the UNIKA to indicate which protocol (CAN/K-BUS/Resistive) your vehicle uses.
Control Functions: Depending on the factory steering wheel controls in your vehicle, the UNIKA will enable you to take full advantage of music playback functions (Volume Up/Down, Source, Skip Previous/Next) and hands-free phone communication (Answer/End).
Programming: The UNIKA offers five different control modes (Mode A: 4 buttons, Mode B 5 buttons, Mode C: 6 buttons, Mode D: 7 buttons, Mode E: 8 buttons) based on the protocol of your vehicle. If you have a vehicle with a resistive protocol system, you have to define the Mode manually. If your vehicle is based on a CAN or K-Bus protocol, the Mode (A, B, C, or D) is automatically assigned.
LED Feedback: The UNIKA steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.
