About the Parrot Zik 3

Jeff Miller

Fashion-forward headphones with futuristic features

I quickly learned that the Parrot Zik 3 Bluetooth headphones offer some effective active noise cancellation. I had them on and didn't notice my fellow writer Dave Bar trying to ask me a question. He was standing right by my desk. Music was playing wirelessly from my smartphone, so I naturally reached for that after I pulled off the headphones. But before I could start fumbling around with my phone, I noticed the music had already paused. Later, when I put the Zik 3s back over my ears, the music and noise cancellation automatically resumed. As the office sounds dissolved away again, I realized I was dealing with some seriously advanced headphones.

Parrot Zik 3 Bluetooth wireless noise-canceling headphones

Available in different colors, as well as different textures (shown in Brown with Crocodile styling)

Of course, the unique look should have tipped me off. If you like the Zik 3's striking, smooth-edged design, you should be able to find a pair that gels with your style  — they're available in several different colors and textures. They fit snug to create a good seal, but the pressure was evenly distributed on my head. Soft padding on the earcups and headband kept them from squeezing too tight. When they were comfortably in place, I was able to enjoy highly adjustable sound controls, powerful bass, and all the latest perks found on these sophisticated 'phones.

Wireless calls and touch-panel control

When connected to my phone via Bluetooth, the Zik 3 offered some cutting edge — and cool — controls. There are no buttons on the right earcup. Instead, a touch-sensitive panel lets you control music, volume, and calls with a simple tap or swipe of your finger. Two built-in microphones and a jawbone sensor capture your voice for clear call quality.

Adjust the amount of noise cancellation with the Parrot Zik app

With active noise cancellation set to auto mode, the Zik 3's built-in mics and internal circuitry "read the room" and determine how much of the noise-canceling effect to apply. For more personalization, the Parrot app for Apple® and Android™ lets you tailor the level of noise cancellation to your preference. I could pinch the Noise Control "circle" inward and outward depending on how much or how little noise cancellation I needed. Enabling "street mode," cuts out some noise, but lets you stay aware of your surroundings. (You know, so you can hear traffic, or in case a co-worker needs to get your attention.)

The app's interface is really slick, useful, and feels current. Some features even work on your smartwatch. For example, you can see how much battery life your headphones have left, just by glancing at your wrist.

Parrot Zik app

The Parrot Zik app (available for Android and iPhone) lets you dial in your sound settings.

Customize your music

These days when you ask someone what type of music they listen to, the answer is often, "I dunno...everything." Case in point: the day I tested out these headphones, Ray LaMontagne put out a much-anticipated album and Kendrick Lamar dropped a surprise EP of unreleased material. I was equally excited for both projects. Rather than having to scramble for headphones that played to the strengths of one or the other, the Parrot Zik app let me fine-tune the Zik 3's sound for each.

Using the same pinch and expand method as the Noise Control screen, I was able to apply listening effects that simulated an intimate soundscape and then a more wide-open environment.  For Kendrick, I chose the "Living room" setting for more immediacy, while LaMontagne's album benefited from the more breathable "Concert Hall." The app also includes an equalizer with listening modes like "Pop," "Vocal," or "Club" for quick, easy control when you switch songs, artist, or genre. There's a more involved five-band graphic equalizer for those who really like to tweak.

Switch roles with wired listening and wireless charging options

A cable is included for passive listening in case the rechargeable battery runs down, and you're unable to charge it with the included USB cable. Speaking of that USB cable, it can also be used as a listening cable for CD-quality tunes. Connecting the cable to your laptop lets you bypass the computer's internal circuitry and use the powerful DAC inside the Zik 3.

But these are advanced wireless headphones right? There should be a more up-to-date way to charge. Well, I layed the Parrot Zik 3s on the Brandmotion FDMC-1101 Qi charging mat, and they instantly began powering up, wirelessly.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Parrot Zik 3 headphones have built-in Bluetooth, adaptive noise-canceling technology, and digital 32-bit audio processing to let you customize your headphones to your personal tastes. The Zik 3 also features a capacitive touch control panel on the outside of the right ear cup. A special Parrot Zik app on your smartphone lets you fine tune the sound of your headphones. The headphones include an audio cable with a 3.5mm plug, as well as a microUSB cable. A plush cloth pouch is provided for storing your headphones and cables when not in use.

Bluetooth: The Parrot Zik 3 is equipped with Bluetooth 3.0, allowing you to wirelessly carry on telephone conversations on your Bluetooth mobile phone as well as listen to music on Bluetooth audio players. Bluetooth profiles supported by the headphones include AD2P, AVRCP, HFP, and PBAP. The headphones also have NFC (Near Field Communications) technology that allows you to quickly pair NFC-equipped smartphones by touching them to the left earcup. The Zik 3 is also compatible with HD Voice to give you clearer phone conversations when using an HD Voice-compatible device and telephone service. Text-to-Speech technology lets you hear the caller's name when a new call comes in. You can also initiate a call using voice recognition.

Built-in DAC: The Zik 3 features a built-in Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) with resolution up to 192kHz / 24-bits. This allows you to plug your headphones into your computer using the supplied 51" USB cable and listen to the music files stored on your computer, including hi-res music files. At the same time, your headphone battery will be charging while you listen.

Touch Control: The outer surface of the right earcup contains an advanced capacitive touch sensitive panel with intuitive controls. To raise and lower the volume, you simply slide your finger vertically along the panel. To change the music track, just slide your finger forward (next track) or backward (previous track) along the panel. A similar side-to-side motion lets you switch between two active calls when in telephone mode. A simple tap of the panel lets you answer or hang up a call; touching and holding the panel rejects an incoming call. A built-in motion detector can also tell when you put on and take off the headphones, and can help control music playback. While listening to music, you can pause playback by simply taking the headphones off your ears. (Tapping the panel also pauses playback.) You can place the headphones back on your head to start the music playing again.

Adaptive Noise Cancelling (ANC): Equipped with two internal, two external microphones, and a bone conduction sensor, the Parrot Zik 3's Adaptive Noise Cancellation technology can reduce ambient noise by up to 25dB. ANC cancels out nearly all external noise so your calls and music are crystal clear.

Wireless Charging: The Zik 3 features Qi-compatible wireless charging, that allows you to charge the battery without connecting any wires. An induction coil in the right ear cup picks up the electromagnetic field produced by the charger's induction coil and converts it back into electrical current to charge the headphones. To charge the headphones, simply place the right ear cup on top of the charger. The headphone's power button slowly pulses red to indicate the Zik 3 is charging. The battery is fully charged in approximately two hours, depending upon the output of the USB port. Qi wireless charging devices are available for the home or office, and for many vehicles.

Battery: The Parrot Zik 3 is powered by a 3.7-volt, 830mAh Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. The battery can be charged in about 2 hours with the wireless charger, or 2-1/2 hours via USB with the supplied Micro USB cable. Even if the battery is exhausted, you can still listen to your music with the supplied 51" audio cable. Battery life depends upon the mode you choose:

  • Standard Mode: 6 hours battery life with ANC on, music playing via Bluetooth, spatialization effect engaged
  • Eco Mode: 7 hours battery life with ANC on, music playing via the included cable, spatialization effect engaged
  • Airplane Mode: 18 hours battery life with ANC on and music playing via the included cable, phone in Airplane Mode.

Design: The headphones are designed by Philippe Starck to create the best sound, along with innovative styling and comfort. The Zik 3 headphones is approximately 17% lighter than the original Zik. They have an around-the-ear design, closed back, and soft, plush leatherette ear pads. The aluminum alloy head rails let the earcups swivel out to store flat. The strong neodymium drivers can provide plenty of power behind your music.

Parrot Zik App: The Parrot Zik App is a free downloadable application for Android and iPhone/iPod. It is designed to work only with the Parrot Zik 2.0 and 3; it is not compatible with Parrot Zik's first generation. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models running iOS 7.0 or later, the Apple Watch, and with Android devices running version 4.0 and up. The app allows you to easily configure your music/phone interface with the following pages:

  • Adaptive Noise Canceling: You can switch on or off the ANC directly through the Zik 3 menu (ANC, Street Mode). Another feature of the app lets you measure the noise around you.
  • Parrot Concert Hall: The Concert Hall audio effect allows you to simulate a musical sound field. You can select one of four zones (Silent Room, Living Room, Jazz Club, Concert Hall) to configure the perceived depth of sound. You can also adjust the orientation of the virtual loudspeakers between 30° and 180° for different effects.
  • Equalizer: The app's 5-band parametric equalizer has 6 presets (Pop, Vocal, Club, Punchy, Deep, and Crystal) so you can adjust the frequencies to the style of music you're listening to. You can adjust each band (50 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 5 kHz, and 10 kHz) from -12dB to +12dB in 0.1dB increments).
  • Presets: A number of downloadable presets are featured from several musical artists to listen to music as they intended it. You can also create and share your own presets, using the 5-band equalizer and the Concert Hall effects.
  • System: The system page displays the current user name of the app, the device's current software version, any available firmware updates, and the application version.
  • Battery Level: You can quickly check the level of the Zik 3's battery, and whether or not it is charging.
  • Helpdesk: The helpdesk lets you troubleshoot the performance of the headphones, as well as direct you to a dedicated page on music playback, telephone performance, and instructions on the Parrot Audio Suite.

Q
Do they have any distortion at high volume? I tried the 1.0 out and noticed distortion.
brian  Mar 09, 2016

A
Not that we've found no. If you were to hear distortion with these it would likely be a shortcoming of your audio source and not the headphones themselves. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Q
Once the settings are set up for the equaliser on the android app, will those settings stay when used with a windows 10 pc? or will they go back to the factory default ?

A
Yes I believe so, I wound up returning them as their bluetooth connectivity was cumbersome. They can connect with one device but if you want to switch to another, you must disconnect from whichever device is currently connected. ALso, since it cannot connect to more than one device simultaneously, you cannot connect to a PC and a phone at the same time. The difficulty was that sometimes I did not remember which device connection was active so had to go through all devices to disconnect and then connect to the new one. If there are more than one users, it can prove to be frustrating. Seinnheisser, for example, can connect to multiple devices, and you can disconnect from the headphones as opposed to the Parrot where you must disconnect from the source device, not the headphones. I hope this helps. The sound quality and build quality were very good but the connectivity limitations were a dealbreaker for me!

Sorry, no. The features of the app will only apply when using the device running the app with the headphones.
