About the Parrot Zik 2.0

David Brown

Feature-packed 'phones

Most headphones are fairly simple: you plug them into your music source, place them on your ears, and listen. But the Parrot Zik 2.0 headphones have a lot more to offer. They have Bluetooth, for wireless music and calls with your smartphone. They've got noise-cancellation, so you can make external distractions fade deep into the background. And when you download the Zik 2.0 app onto your phone or tablet, you'll get even more options. Of course, listening is still the most important function any headphones offer — the Zik 2.0 headphones don't disappoint, offering lavish detail that brings out subtle nuances in your music.

Wireless connection and touch-panel control

If you have a smartphone or tablet with Bluetooth (that's pretty much all of them), then you can connect the Zik 2.0 headphones wirelessly. Not only does this free you from the nuisance of a dangling wire, but it also offers some very cool controls. The right earcup features a touch panel — no buttons, dials or knobs — so you can control music, volume, and calls with a simple tap or swipe of your finger. Two built-in microphones and a jawbone sensor capture your voice for clear call quality. A cable is included for passive listening in case the rechargeable battery runs down and you're unable to charge it with the included USB cable.

Active noise-cancelation, too

There are six additional microphones built into the Parrot Zik 2.0 headphones. Nope, they're not for phone calls. They pick up external noise so it can be sufficiently minimized by the active noise cancellation circuitry. Take these headphones on the plane to minimize engine noise or to the office to block out your coworkers' conversations. You can use the noise-canceling and Bluetooth functions simultaneously, independently, or not at all to conserve battery life.

The Zik 2.0 app offers custom sound

If you want to get the most from these headphones, download the free Zik 2.0 app for Apple and Android™. It offers some cool tweaks for fine-tuning the sound. There are listening modes that can make your music sound like you're in a jazz club or a large concert hall. The app also includes a five-band graphic equalizer, so you can bump up the bass or tone down the high frequencies. You can also adjust the noise cancellation to enable "street mode," to help you stay aware of your surroundings.

One final feature...

There's one more important feature to consider with any pair of headphones: comfort. Yep, the Zik 2.0 headphones are strong in that department too. They're 17 percent lighter than the original Zik 'phones, while employing more padding on the headband and comfy new ear pads. That allows you to make the most of their incredible versatility.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Parrot Zik 2.0 headphones have built-in Bluetooth and noise-canceling technology. An advanced capacitive touch control panel on the outside of the earcups let you change music tracks, raise and lower volume, and answer and disconnect phone calls. The Zik 2.0 comes with a rechargeable battery to power the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). A special Parrot app on your smartphone lets you fine tune the sound of your headphones. The headphones include an audio cable with a 3.5mm plug, as well as a microUSB charging cable. A plush cloth pouch lets you store your headphones and cables when not in use.

Bluetooth: The Parrot Zik 2.0 is equipped with Bluetooth 3.0, allowing you to wirelessly carry on telephone conversations on your Bluetooth mobile phone as well as listen to music on Bluetooth audio players. Bluetooth profiles supported by the headphones include AD2P, AVRCP, HFP, and PBAP. The headphones also have NFC (Near Field Communications) technology that allows you to quickly pair NFC-equipped smartphones by touching them to the left earcup. The Zik 2.0 is also compatible with HD Voice to give you clearer phone conversations when using an HD Voice-compatible device and telephone service.

Touch Control: The outer surface of the right earcup contains an advanced capacitive touch sensitive panel with intuitive controls. To raise and lower the volume, you simply slide your finger vertically along the panel. To change the music track, just slide your finger forward (next track) or backward (previous track) along the panel. A similar side-to-side motion lets you switch between two active calls when in telephone mode. A simple tap of the panel lets you answer or hang up a call; touching and holding the panel rejects an incoming call. A built-in motion detector can also tell when you put on and take off the headphones, and can help control music playback. While listening to music, you can pause playback by simply taking the headphones off your ears. (Tapping the panel also pauses playback.) You can place the headphones back on your head to start the music playing again.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): Equipped with two internal, two external microphones, and a bone conduction sensor, the Parrot Zik 2.0's Active Noise Cancellation technology can reduce ambient noise by up to 25dB. ANC cancels out nearly all external noise so your calls and music are crystal clear.

Battery: The Parrot Zik 2.0 is powered by a 3.7-volt, 830mAh Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. The battery can be charged in about 2-1/2 hours via USB with the supplied microUSB cable. Even if the battery is exhausted, you can still listen to your music with the supplied 51" audio cable. Battery life depends upon the mode you choose:

  • Flight Mode: 18 hours battery life with ANC on and music playing via the included cable
  • Eco Mode: 7 hours battery life with ANC on, music playing via the included cable, and the Parrot Concert Hall effect engaged
  • Normal Mode: 6 hours battery life with ANC on, music playing wirelessly via Bluetooth, and Parrot Concert Hall effect engaged

Design: The headphones are designed by Philippe Starck to create the best sound, along with innovative styling and comfort. The 2.0 version of the Zik headphones is approximately 17% lighter than the original Zik. They have an around-the-ear design, closed back, and soft, plush leatherette ear pads. The aluminum alloy head rails let the earcups swivel out to store flat. The strong neodymium drivers can provide plenty of power behind your music.

Parrot Zik 2.0 App: The Parrot Zik 2.0 Audio Suite is a free downloadable application for Android and iPhone/iPod. It is designed to work only with the Parrot Zik 2.0; it is not compatible with Parrot Zik's first generation. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models running iOS 7.0 or later, and with Android devices running version 4.0 and up. The app allows you to easily configure your music/phone interface with the following pages:

  • Active Noise Canceling: You can switch on or off the ANC directly through the Zik 2.0 menu (ANC, Street Mode). Another feature of the app lets you measure the noise around you.
  • Parrot Concert Hall: The Concert Hall audio effect allows you to simulate a musical sound field. You can select one of four zones (Silent Room, Living Room, Jazz Club, Concert Hall) to configure the perceived depth of sound. You can also adjust the orientation of the virtual loudspeakers for different effects.
  • Equalizer: The app's 5-band parametric equalizer has 6 presets (Pop, Vocal, Club, Punchy, Deep, and Crystal) so you can adjust the frequencies to the style of music you're listening to. You can adjust each band (50 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 5 kHz, and 10 kHz) from -12dB to +12dB).
  • Presets: A number of downloadable presets are featured from several musical artists to listen to music as they intended it. You can also create and share your own presets, using the 5-band equalizer and the Concert Hall effects.
  • System: The system page displays the current user name of the app, the device's current software version, any available firmware updates, and the application version.
  • Battery Level: You can quickly check the level of the Zik 2.0's battery, and whether or not it is charging.
  • Helpdesk: The helpdesk lets you troubleshoot the performance of the headphones, as well as direct you to a dedicated page on music playback, telephone performance, and instructions on the Parrot Audio Suite.
