Nobody likes to waste time being lost, so the pros at Magellan developed the feature-rich RoadMate 5255T-LM portable GPS navigator to help you travel more efficiently. Not only does it offer a generous 5" screen and AAA content, but you'll discover that new features like traffic camera alerts and Landmark Guidance are real life savers.
The 5255T-LM guides you through maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, plus 7 million points of interest, on its 5" touch display. Voice prompts announce street names at turns, and lane guidance will ensure that you're in the right place for upcoming maneuvers. Detailed views show you precisely where to go, so you can navigate through complicated intersections. You can choose landscape mode for a better view of the surrounding area, or switch to portrait mode for a more extended view of the road ahead.
The Landmark Guidance option gives you spoken directions based on buildings as well as street names. For instance, you'll hear "turn left at the Exxon station at Commonwealth Drive," instead of "Turn left at Commonwealth Drive." You can look out for easy-to-recognize logos and colors rather than hard-to-spot street signs, and pay closer attention to the road ahead.
Don't get slowed down by congestion or out-of-date maps that lead you astray — the 5255T-LM offers free lifetime updates for traffic and maps. You'll get quick feedback on traffic along your route in most metropolitan areas so you can find a better away around the tie-ups, and you'll also get up to four free map updates a year to make sure your navigator stays current.
Magellan also includes the PhantomALERT camera alert service with your purchase of the 5255T-LM. You'll receive audible and visual warnings of approaching speed and red-light cameras along your route. For an additional fee, you can receive alerts for known enforcement areas (speed traps), as well as road locations with high accident rates.
The included AAA TourBook® features give you instant access to service details and recommended destinations from the leading travel resource. If you're a member, you can quickly access a phone listing for AAA Roadside Assistance™ in case of emergency — you'll also get your exact GPS location so help can find you quickly.
Ever get stuck driving around in a city looking for an open parking lot or garage? The 5255T-LM's "Best Parking" feature quickly shows you nearby garages, along with hours of operation and directions to the entrance. And you'll find that route optimization takes the stress out of running errands by showing you the most efficient way to hit multiple spots on the same excursion.
Magellan's OneTouch™ menu lets you save your favorite destinations and searches so you can pull them up without scrolling through multiple screens. You can connect a rear-view camera to the 5255T-LM through its built-in A/V input and use your Magellan's screen to see what's behind you. Magellan does not include a connection cable for the A/V input.
A portable navigator eliminates the issue of phone coverage. You don't use data, and you always have maps - even when your phone has no (or slow) service. The maps in a portable navigator are superior to your phone's maps, as are the turn-by-turn directions. Modern GPS navigators have larger screens than most phones, so it's easier to see the map at a glance. Navigators with 3D maps really help you orient yourself quickly in urban areas. If you've got a lead foot, most navigators can also warn you when you are exceeding the speed limit.
Magellan RoadMate 5255T-LM
I opted for this unit because of the 5" inch screen size (that's all the room I have), the integrated/matched backup camera and the price.
The installation went without a hitch. It went downhill from there. I finally uninstalled the system and exchanged it for the Garmin 560LMT. (More about that below).
My major disappointments with the 5255-LM
1. Locating the GPS satellites took 2-5 minutes. It also had to intermittently re-acquire the satellite signal on the open road making navigation a nightmare. As a comparison, the Garmin 560LMT had none of those locating problems in the same vehicle and acquired the signal even inside the garage.
2. The back-up camera is simply inferior. Wouldn't you think they'd match a camera with the proper aspect ratio? Instead cars are real wide and people are fat... It also does not offer a distance scale in the image making distance estimation difficult.
3. If you travel anywhere in Mexico, there is currently no map add-on available for this unit.
The only pro left is the price.
My replacement system (with which I am very happy) is the Garmin 560LMT which offers a camera input that senses if a signal is coming from the camera. The back-up camera that works splendid with the Garmin is a Pyle PLCM18BC (with distance scale) available for around $30.
So instead of a poorly performing and ill matched system, I spent about $50 more for an identically size system the performs wonderfully.
Cons: poor signal acquisition, poorly matched camera
This review is not a reflection on Crutchfield. The product was delivered in a very timely manner. I am very disappointed in the quality of the product and its display. The contrast is very dim and during the day any little bit of light on the dashboard makes it impossible to see anything on the screen. Had to purchase a visor for the screen (add another $20 to the cost) which helps a little.
Pros: display at night is okay. Camera shows nice picture but even then, the speed of the wireless picture skips around. Nothing good to say about any features. Camera is a very nice feature to have and was one of the main reasons for getting this product. However, you have to go very slow when reversing so the picture keeps up with you.
Cons: Very disappointed with the overall product. Loved the Garmin that I had for 5 years till it went bad. Got this one for the features like lifetime maps updates and traffic reports. Found out later I needed to buy another hardware item to get the traffic reports.
Does everything advertised reasonably well.
Pros: Auto on and off is very nice. Lots of POI's . Price is reasonable.
Cons: The quality of the backup camera is only so so but usable and replaceable. Light levels are too bright after dark if adjusted high enough for daytime use.
This was a Father's Day gift. It took only 15 minutes to install and it is very easy to use. The GPS and the backup camera are so great; it was the best gift. It was installed on a truck that is used to pull trailers and boats. The backup camera makes it a breeze to line up perfect every time.
Pros: We just installed it because it is a "Father's Day Gift" so we are still checking out all of the featrues. GPS and camera is great and the price is so reasonable! Easy to intall and use!
Cons: It works best with the GPS in the middle of the truck. Installed on the left side of the windshield driver's side and the reception kept breaking up with the backup camera. Not a big deal; we just moved it by the rearview mirror and it is good to go.
I was interested in the 5255T-LM because of the wireless backup camera and the affordable price point. After eight months of use I am satisfied overall with the unit. In September 2012, we installed this unit in a 2013 Volvo S60 T5 AWD by tapping into the reverse light wiring right at the tail light. The unit can be delayed several seconds before engaging into reverse. The night vision of the camera is almost nonexistent so think of this camera as a daytime park assist device. The wireless frame rate is slow so there is a noticeable stutter, but if you are backing to a wall or parallel parking the camera does fine. The camera has to mount to a license plate and while this is good for ease of installation it limits creative camera placements.
I have used Garmin devices for years and this was my first Magellan. On a trip from DC to a small section of New York City, the Magellan responded very well. The unit also performed well in DC / MD / PA / NJ / NY / VA / OH and around Detroit, MI for the 2013 auto show. The voice prompts were often and when needed. The display of road signs mimicking the actual signs on major interstates provides a nice user experience. The user interface is fairly easy to use, yet it could be a little more intuitive. Once you use it a few times it is fine.
Crutchfield's description lists lifetime maps as included but I have not been able to sort out how to do it for free via Magellan's Content Manager software (Magellan wants $79).
Pros: Frequent voice prompts are helpful in unfamiliar areas; easy to read maps; a thin case with an easy to use windshield mount. This is a good unit with the basic features needed to take vacations and trips to new destinations.
Cons: At night, the brightness does not go low enough and in order to eliminate a distractive reflection on the windshield, you will need to either buy or make a hood to block the light emitted from the unit. I would have liked to see longer cables for a cleaner installation; an included hard-wire kit for the vehicle would have been nice. Backup camera nighttime performance is poor but it was a free camera. Windows CE is a bit slow and I had a system failure that required a hard reset.
The Magellan Roadmate 5255t-lm is an excellent gps. The screen is big enough to see and not block your view on your windshield. This gps contains all the features of the more expensive gps's without the big price. I would recommend it to anyone.
Pros: Nice size viewing screen. Also like that it informs the driver many times before they need to make the turn. Comes on quickly.
Cons: Would like to see more of the viewing area when backing up. Also would like for the picture to be more clear and not have a stretched look.
Not the best GPS i have used, pretty slow to start with.Sometimes the boot up takes more then 2 min. The worst part is the touch screen it's too slow ,wireless camera is not bad but the installation is tricky probably not a DIY ,a night vision would have been a good addition .
Pros: wireless camera
Cons: slow,non responsive touchscreen
I am being kind with two stars, giving one star for the GPS and one star for the back up camera. 1+1=2. I cannot believe that a company with a name like Magellan would release a product like this for sale. The GPS is extremely slow to reroute, navigating the menu unfriendly and even brand new out of the box did not recognize a road in TN that has been there for five years (major four lane state hwy). Worst back up camera ever, about a two second delay before the screen would come on, and would occasionally exit out of back up mode while still in reverse.
Pros: Good concept.
Cons: Poorly executed the good concept.
I installed this unit myself on my 2010 Dodge Ram, which included the backup camera kit. Installing the unit was pretty easy but it took about 6 hours. The vast majority of that time was spent stringing wires and purchasing additional materials to secure the transmitter for the backup camera to the inside of the left hand rear turn signal housing. This probably took a full two hours longer than needed as I tend to be a be of perfectionist. Once installed the GPS worked flawlessly but the operation of the camera left a bit to be desired. The camera often does not come on when the car is placed in reversed or there is a lag of about 3 to 6 seconds even though the signal on the GPS unit shows a solid 5 bars of reception. On ocassion the picture is sometimes lost and takes few seconds for it tro restore itself which could be a problem if using this unit while backing into a tight space. I bought this unit primarily for the backup camera to assist when hooking up my trailer so no big deal if it does not work perfectly but I had hoped it would work better.
Pros: GPS works great and I like the traffic features as well as the traffic light camera alerts. Graphics are much improved over my Magellan Maestro unit I purchased in 2007 that this unit has replaced. If I had to rate just the GPS unit I'd give it at least 4 stars.
Cons: Should provide a 110V charging adapter as well as carrying case to store the unit in when not in use. Backup camera leave a great deal to be desired. If I had to rate just the backup camera unit I'd give it 2 stars.
Not at all happy with this unit. Backup camera does not always connect, especially when I need it the most. The GPS sometimes take ten minutes to find a signal if at all. I can put my smart phone next to it and my phone connects immediately. Well not buy another one and am actually looking for a replacement.
Works great, backup camera not very good at night in areas with low light. With my Honda Ridgeline the reverse lights shine to the outside. Still looking for the night driving display mode on the GPS. Adjusting brightness is all I've found so far.
Pros: Great GPS. Does not repeat re-calculating.
Cons: Display too bright for night driving. There has to be a night and day auto mode. How do I find it?Crutchfield response on March 11, 2013 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
I bought this mostly for the wireless camera. It literally took 15 min to install on my '04 Tundra. The camera works fine, with approx. 2sec delay when shifting to reverse. I like the way the camera adjusts and has a very wide view angle. The GPS unit works fine with no issues finding satellites (perhaps our sky is larger than some big city folks'...). Really, I have had no issues with the device. I'm not thrilled with the Magellan software and update process but otherwise I am very pleased with the purchase.
Pros: camera, gps features
Installed the Roadmate on a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe - took about 2 hours. As a backup camera it seems adequate. However, as a GPS it is unacceptable. Like other reviewers, we have found it takes a LONG time to connect to the satellites. Next, it puts our address at least 1/4 mile away. For one trip it wanted us to take a woods road (it was a road 50 years ago), but Google Maps also tends to like that road. But the most frustrating thing is that the ETA for every trip we calculate is inaccurate - always at least 15-20 minutes too long. Have had a Garmin for years and it has always been extremely accurate in calculating ETA. I have contacted Magellan to try to get an explanation and although they have been polite and fairly prompt in responding, their reasons for the inaccurate ETA are totally unacceptable (make sure my clock has the accurate time). Probably won't return it since the primary reason for getting the unit is the backup camera. But I will also have my Garmin with me for all major trips.
Pros: convenient having backup camera and GPS in one unit.
Cons: GPS is not acceptable unit
Like a previous reviewer, I was also excited about a GPS with an integrated backup camera (I tow a boat with a Tahoe). The backup camera installed in about 15 minutes and the quality was (just) OK in daylight. I did not find a second or two lag time to be a problem.
Now... as a navigation unit... that's another story. The user interface was fine - I actually like the address lookup and prompting compared to Garmin's approach. That's about all I can say positive about the GPS functions. The unit is extremely slow to boot up and never took less than three minutes to acquire satellites - often it was ten to fifteen minutes and on more than one occasion the unit never did acquire satellites. (This was mounted on the dashboard under the rather large windshield of the Tahoe with no tall buildings or obscuring trees around.) One of the few times it did find satellites; it wanted to take us about ten miles out of the way to get home from our local Wal-Mart. The unit would accept my street address (in a well-established neighborhood), but there was apparently no street in front of my house. Leaving the house, the instructions would begin with, "Proceed to [my street name] and continue to [the next corner]." The "dashboard" instructions were confusing - for example, if there was a turn in our route five miles ahead, the indicator would show a straight-ahead arrow and 3 miles rather than the turn arrow and five miles. I returned the unit and purchased a Garmin of the same size with th
Pros: Backup camera
Cons: Everything else
I've had wireless back up cameras and other gps systems in the past, but not all in one unit such as this one. The idea is fantastic but it really needs a little more work. I installed it on a Honda Crosstour (that was a mistake, more than bargained for) since the license plate is on the hatch back, but the backup lights are on rear side panels of the car. Rating the Magellan backup camera; there is quite of a delay (~3 secs) when putting the car in reverse before the view would show up on the gps unit. Plus there are no backup phantom lines within the view, not like that's a big deal. But it would have been nice. The night vision on this camera is horrible; yes I know it doesn't have IR. But at night with the naked eye you can at least see a little bit of my driveway with the street lamps. Through the backup camera, that little bit of light from the street lamp is nonexistent. Rating the Magellan gps unit, I'm not impressed. It takes longer to lock onto satellites when coming out of the garage, a lot longer than my Garmin unit. And the worst of all, the street that I live on is not in the GPS! My street has been there since 2005, and it's still not in the Magellan data base?!?! I didn't have any problems with my Garmin, it showed right up. I called Magellan and they said that it would be added in the next update, but that doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. What are the chances that next time I use this GPS, I would be able to find small streets at all?!?!
Pros: one unit for dual purpose. lifetime map & traffic.
Cons: map not complete with small streets and backup camera needs to be CCD instead of the cheap CMOS for better night vision capabilities.
This one acts like the 3350 I had, great, not like the Garmin I got.
Pros: Major Pro is the ability to cancel individual suggested legs of the route and ease of re-route.

The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System includes a rear-view camera with integrated license plate mount, a wireless transmitter, wireless receiver, and 12-volt power adapter.
Note: The wireless back-up camera has a range of approximately 45'. Great for most cars, vans, trucks, and small trailers.
Rear View Camera: The rear-view camera provides a mirror output, so whatever the driver sees on the right side is what is on the right side of the vehicle. The back-up camera employs a CMOS imaging sensor with a resolution of 640 x 480. It provides a wide angle view of 120° horizontal x 100° vertical, so you can see people and objects coming into view behind your vehicle. The rear-view camera mounts to your vehicle's license plate and connects to the included wireless transmitter.
Wireless Transmitter: The back-up camera mounts on your vehicle's license plate with the 2.4GHz wireless transmitter located in the truck or other protected area of your vehicle. The wireless transmitter is weather proof and water resistant (IPX4 rating). The back-up camera attaches to the transmitter via a DC cord and composite video cable. The transmitter also requires a power/ground connection to your vehicle's reverse light circuit. The wireless transmitter will wirelessly transmit the back-up camera's video signal to the system's wireless receiver.
Wireless Receiver: The 2.4GHz wireless receiver mounts at the front of your vehicle, next to the Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The wireless receiver connects to the Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator via a 3.5mm A/V connector. The wireless receiver then receives the back-up camera's video signal wirelessly via the connected wireless transmitter and displays the signal on the connected Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator's screen.
12-Volt Power Adapter: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System includes an 12-Volt/cigarette lighter power adapter to power the wireless receiver and the Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The 12-volte power adapter features two mini-USB (type-B) connectors.
License Plate Mount: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera includes an integrated license plate mount that easily attaches to your vehicle's license plate. The back-up camera features a dustproof and waterproof housing (IP67 rating) to protect it against wet & dusty conditions. The camera can be adjusted downward to 45° for truck and SUV mounting.
Note: The license plate mount has two mounting holes spaced between 6.75" to 7.375" apart.
Auto Rear-View Mode: When you put your vehicle in reverse, the Magellan GPS navigator will switch from navigation mode to rear view mode, allowing you to see what is behind you; including children, pets, and toys. In order for this feature to work, the wireless transmitter's power and ground wires must be connected to your vehicle's reverse light circuit.
Mounting: The RoadMate 5255T-LM+BUC comes supplied with an adjustable arm that can be mounted to either the windshield or dash of your vehicle using a suction-cup mount. The Magellan RoadMate needs a clear view of the sky to receive signals from the GPS satellites, so choose a location with an unobstructed view of the sky, commonly on or near the windshield.
Safety Warning: Please check the applicable regulations in your state regarding windshield mounting. Certain states prohibit the mounting of any items on your windshield. Go to www.magellangps.com for alternative mounting solutions.
Rechargeable Battery: The Magellan RoadMate receiver has an internal battery that permits use of the receiver for brief periods of time while not connected to external power. The unit has a built-in Li-Ion rechargeable battery that offers up to 2 hours of continuous use. You can recharge the unit's built-in battery with the supplied vehicle power adapter in your car. The internal battery will begin charging as soon as power is supplied to the Magellan RoadMate. It can take up to 4 hours to fully charge the battery, depending on the battery level. The battery does not need to be fully charged to use the Magellan RoadMate.
Note: The internal battery cannot be charged through a USB cable connected to a personal computer.
Battery Strength Indicator: The RoadMate 5255T-LM+BUC features an on-screen Battery Strength Indicator so you know exactly how much battery life you have left.
Auto Power: If the touchscreen has not been accessed or the current position has not changed for a defined period of time, the Magellan RoadMate can be set to power off to save battery life.
Optional AC Adapter: An optional AC power adapter (sold separately) is available from the Magellan website. The optional AC power adapter provides constant power to the navigation unit.
mini-USB Port: The Magellan RoadMate 5255T-LM+BUC features a mini-USB (type-B) port and comes with a 31" USB cable for connecting the navigation unit to your PC for software and map updates from the Magellan website.

The GPS comes with the maps installed, and then whenever there updates to the maps you can download them free from the internet. There is nothing else to buy. New updates come out several times a year and they will notify you when they are available. Most GPS's come with free updates, other wise they would be out of date quickly. [ GERALD Mar 25, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: That Magellan Roadmate GPS comes with lifetime map updates at no extra charge so this customer isn't paying for them per se, and the reason for the updates is that roads change and in time, you will appreciate the updated, accurate information going forward.
