Our take on the Magellan Maestro 3140

by Dominic Devito
Magellan

Who needs a portable navigator?

Portable GPS puts you in touch with the world when you're on the road. Tap the restaurant icon, and it asks you what kind of food you're looking for. Type in "Mexican," and you're eating a burrito before you know it. A portable navigator not only gets you to your destination, it can also find museums, theaters, and other spots along the way. Many navigators receive traffic reports, so you can avoid jams. Other cool features range from hands-free calling to 3D graphics and lane guidance. Best of all, you can move a portable easily from car to car, a big plus for multi-car families.

Magellan's Maestro 3140 portable navigator gives you a powerful combination of guidance and communication so you can travel with confidence. Use the newly-designed interface on the 3.5" touchscreen display to find detailed maps of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, along with the 4.5 million preloaded points of interest.

Convenient guidance
Enter your destination and follow along on the display in 2-D or 3-D map mode as the voice prompts alert you to upcoming maneuvers. The Maestro 3140 uses text-to-speech technology to speak actual street names at turns — you'll hear "turn left at Valley Road" instead of "take next left" so you can pay attention to the road instead of the screen. Magellan's optional traffic-information receiver lets you receive real-time updates on congestion along your route.

Talk hands-free with Bluetooth
Built-in Bluetooth technology lets you dial and receive calls safely, and use your phone's address book while leaving your phone in your bag or pocket. The included AAA® features give you instant access to service details and recommended destinations from the leading travel resource. Just tap the screen for a quick connection to AAA Roadside Assistance or to dial ahead to select points of interest.

Features

Overview: The Magellan Maestro 3140 is a vehicle and portable navigation device that utilizes GPS signals from satellites to calculate your precise location and compute details about your destination travel. Once the Maestro 3140 locates your position and movement, it can then overlay this information onto detailed integrated NAVTEQ maps to provide you with visual representation of your location and destination route. Because the Maestro 3140 requires no installation, you can transfer the unit from one vehicle to another. The unit is made of high-impact plastic for added durability.

GPS Receiver: The Maestro 3140 is equipped with a WAAS/EGNOS-enabled, 20-channel SiRF Star III GPS receiver. It receives tracking signals from up to 20 satellites, updating your position once per second. With WAAS/EGNOS, it is accurate to 3-5 meters (10-16 feet), and with GPS only, less than 7 meters (15 feet).

Antenna: The portable navigation unit features an integrated multidirectional GPS antenna patch adding to its sleek design. There is no input for an external antenna.

Built-in Map: The Maestro 3140 comes preloaded with detailed maps of the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, enabling you to travel the country with no need to download new data.

Touchscreen Display: The unit features a large, anti-glare, 4:3 touchscreen 3.5" display with easy to use menus, maps and icons. The display's brightness can be adjusted for easy night and day time viewing.

Memory Card Slot: The Magellan Maestro 3140 features a memory card slot that will accept both SD-cards and Multimediacards. You can save custom POIs onto a memory card using the software found on the supplied CD-ROM through your PC and then load the memory card into the Maestro 3140. You can also backup data such as your Address Book to an inserted SD or MMC card. Once the data has been back up, it can be restored at any time.

Note: No memory card is included. When you restore from backed up data, address book and other data will be replaced with the restored data.

Turn-By-Turn Voice and Visual Guidance With SayWhere Text-To-Speech: The Maestro 3140 offers Turn-by-Turn visual guidance through it's 3.5" touchscreen display and voice guidance via its built-in speaker and headphone output. The unit will not only tell you when to make each turn but, it will also say the street name or exit you are turning onto.

On-Screen Keypad: The unit's on-screen keypad allows you to manually enter specific data, addresses and destination into the Magellan Maestro 3140.

QuickSpell: To help you make sure you enter in the correct destination, the Maestro 3140 will automatically correct spelling errors and complete your destination address. QuickSpell also uses information in the unit's database to limit the keys that need to be pressed to present only those which can access information in the database.
