Our take on the Magellan Maestro 4350

The Magellan Maestro 4350 portable navigator features the OneTouch menu, which displays your favorite routes, searches, and applications on its home screen, so you won't waste time scrolling through menus. It also makes it easier than ever to locate gas stations, coffee shops, and other stopping points. As you travel, the Maestro even offers speed limit warnings that remind you not to drive too fast.

The Maestro 4350 offers maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico on its 4.3" screen, with 3-D landmarks and lane guidance that make it easier to position yourself for an approaching turn. It also includes 6 million selectable points of interest for locating important destinations along your route. Text-to-speech voice prompts say actual street names at turns, so you can concentrate on the road instead of the navigator.

Timely traffic updates
The Maestro 4350 includes a FM-TMC traffic-info receiver which keeps you updated on congestion in most metropolitan areas. The navigator can offer detailed information on the cause of the delay, and save you time by finding a quick way around the problem. You get a free 3-month traffic-info subscription with your purchase.

Built-in Bluetooth® connectivity lets you place and receive hands-free phone calls with your compatible phone. The Maestro also features AAA© travel information, which provides listings for top-rated accommodations and restaurants, as well as auto repair facilities and campgrounds approved by the leading travel resource.

Features

Overview: The Magellan Maestro 4350 is a vehicle and portable navigation device that utilizes GPS signals from satellites to calculate your precise location and compute details about your travel destination. Once the Maestro 4350 locates your position and movement, it can then overlay this information onto detailed integrated NAVTEQ maps to provide you with visual representation of your location and destination route. Because the Maestro 4350 requires no permanent installation, you can transfer the unit from one vehicle to another. The unit is made of high-impact plastic for added durability.

GPS Receiver: The Maestro 4350 is equipped with a WAAS/EGNOS-enabled GPS receiver. It receives tracking signals from numerous global positioning satellites, updating your position once per second. The system is accurate to approximately 10-16 feet (3-5 meters).

Antenna: The portable navigation unit features an integrated multidirectional GPS antenna patch adding to its sleek design.

Built-in Map: The Maestro 4350 comes preloaded with detailed maps and destinations of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico, enabling you to travel throughout North America without the need to download new data.

Touch Screen Display: The unit features a large, anti-glare, touch screen 4.3" widescreen display with easy to use menus, maps and icons. The display's night and day brightness settings are individually adjustable for best viewing.

Memory Card Slot: The Magellan Maestro 4350 features a memory card slot that will accept both SD-cards and MultiMediaCards. Music, video, and still photos can be played back from a memory card. You can also backup data such as your Address Book to an inserted SD or MMC card. Once the data has been backed up, it can be restored at any time.

Note: No memory card is included. When you restore from backed up data, address book and other data will be replaced with the restored data.

Turn-By-Turn Voice and Visual Guidance: The Maestro 4350 offers Turn-by-Turn visual guidance through it's wide touch screen display and voice guidance via its built-in speaker.

Text to Speech: During voice guidance, the text to speech feature reads street names aloud.

On-Screen Keypad: The unit's on-screen keypad allows you to manually enter specific data, addresses and destination into the Magellan Maestro 4350.

QuickSpell: To help you enter your destination correctly, the QuickSpell feature uses information in the unit's database to limit the keys offered as an option, presenting only those which can access information in the database.

AAA TourBook: The Maestro 4350 includes travel information from AAA to make your trip safe, easy, and hassle-free. If you are a AAA member, you can take advantage of discount listings wherever the AAA card is accepted. There is an option to calculate a route to any of the locations provided in the TourBook. AAA TourBook categories include:

  • AAA TourBook Information: View information about accommodations, restaurants, destinations, attractions and events in locations near your current position or near any location you enter.
  • Show Your Card & Save: Search for businesses that offer discounts for AAA members.
  • Approved Auto Repairs: Search for AAA-approved automotive repair facilities, including hours of operation and services offered.
  • AAA Branch Offices: Search for AAA branch offices with information on hours of operation and services offered.
  • Campgrounds: Search for campgrounds rated by AAA.

Warranty Extension for AAA Members: AAA members can get an extra year of warranty added to the manufacturer's one year warranty by registering their GPS unit within 60 days of purchase.

Map Screen Modes: There are two unique modes that the Map Screen can be displayed in - Normal and Routing.

  • Normal: In Normal mode, your position is shown on the map along with the time. As you travel, your position will be updated, giving you a clear view of your position and surrounding streets.
  • Routing: In Routing mode, additional information is displayed, providing you with more detailed information about the route you have selected. In the routing screen, you can view the name of the street you're currently traveling on, plus the street name for the next maneuver, POI icons, and distance to next maneuver. You can toggle between the distance remaining to reach your destination, approximate time remaining until the destination is reached, and the approximate time of day to arrive at your destination.

Map View Options: The portable GPS unit allows you to the following map views.

  • 2D Map: Two dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in either the direction of your heading or direction pointing North.
  • 3D Map: Three dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in the direction of your heading.

Current Location Screen: The Current Location screen displays approximate address information, the distance from the next and previous cross streets, as well as your latitude, longitude and heading.

Maneuver List Screen: Each line of the Maneuver List screen provides details about the maneuvers (turns) in the order that they are to be made, with the next maneuver at the top. The bottom bar of the Maneuver List screen indicates the distance and time to the next maneuver as well as the total distance computed for the route. The Maneuver List can be modified if you want to exclude one of the maneuvers should you want to avoid traveling on of the streets listed.

Zoom Level: In the 2D view the zoom level ranges from street level to global; you are limited to eight zoom levels in the 3D view.

Built-In Bluetooth: The built-in Bluetooth function allows you to use the Maestro 4350 as a hands-free device for a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. You can make and receive calls using the 4350's touch screen,  and talk and listen from your phone using the unit's built-in speaker and integrated microphone.

Text Messages: You can connect your Magellan Maestro to a cell phone via Bluetooth to send and receive text messages using the text message screen.

Lane Guidance: Lane guidance is a visual lane representation; it will show which lane you should be in to make your next turn.

Setting GPS Position: Setting a GPS position is useful if you are not getting satellite information quickly because the Magellan Maestro 4350 has traveled over 500 miles while turned off. Setting the GPS position will allow the Maestro 4350 to compute which satellites are available and calculate the position quicker.

Detour: When navigating, the options menu offers the choice detouring from the current route; choose to detour around the next 3, 5, or 7 miles.

Smart Detour: When you slow down under 20% of the speed limit on a freeway, after a few seconds the Magellan software assumes you are in a traffic jam and displays the Detour button on the Map screen.

Auto Re-Route: If you travel off the computed route, the Magellan Maestro 4350 will automatically re-calculate the routing information to get you to your original destination using the routing method you selected when creating the route.

Customizable Route Method: You can set the Maestro 4350 to calculate your route by Fastest Time, Shortest Distance, or Most Economical method. You can also choose to avoid highways, ferries, toll roads, carpool roads or lanes, unpaved roads, crossing international borders, and roads where a permit is needed.

Route Exclusion: You can manually select streets and freeways to avoid to better customize your route.

Auto Night Map Display: In Auto Night Map Display mode the unit's map screen is displayed in light colors for daytime use and a black background for nighttime use. You can also manually select day or night modes.

Rechargeable Battery: The unit has a built-in Li-Ion rechargeable battery that offers up to 3 hours of continuous use. You can recharge the unit's built-in battery with the supplied vehicle power adapter, AC adapter, or USB cable. The unit remains operable while using the supplied vehicle adapter or AC adapter but is not operable when connected via USB.

Vehicle Type: Prior to routing to a destination you have an opportunity to change the vehicle mode. Specific vehicle modes restrict access to certain roads. For example, in Bus mode the route will not navigate through residential roads, private roads, or pedestrian roads. Bus mode, however, will route on bus only access roads that are not available to cars. Taxi mode is the same as Bus mode, but instead of using bus only access roads it will take Taxi only access roads. In Emergency mode, routes will navigate on all roads except pedestrian roads. Pedestrian and Bicycle mode do not route through private or controlled access roads but will access pedestrian only roads. The only difference between pedestrian and bicycle mode is bicycle mode will take into account directional constraints and pedestrian will not. Car mode will not route through private roads or use pedestrian walkways. Car mode uses roads where access for cars is allowed.

Mounting: The Maestro 4350 comes supplied with an adjustable arm that can be mounted to either the windshield, using a suction-cup mount, or dash of your vehicle, using the self-adhesive plastic disc.

Magellan Traffic Service

Traffic Capability: The Maestro 4350 comes complete with integrated traffic capabilities. If traffic information is available for the area you are traveling and the traffic subscription is active, traffic incident information will be displayed on the Map Screen. The re-routing mode will reroute the vehicle if an incident impacts the route you are traveling and a faster alternative route is available. Events affecting your route are reported in the form of warning messages on the unit's screen.

NavTraffic: The TrafficKit uses an FM receiver that sends real-time reports directly to your Maestro 4350. The unit uses this information to make advanced calculations and adjust the time and distance to destination shown on the color touch screen. A subscription to NavTraffic is required in order to receive live traffic information. Note: A 3-month pre-paid subscription comes with the unit.

Market Coverage: The NavTraffic service is currently available in the following 50 metropolitan areas:

Buyer Beware - Poor Resolution and More

Written By kaashie, New England on Monday, October 05, 2009

I ran into three problems despite having upgraded to the latest firmware after the purchase:

[1] Regardless of the duration of charging, the scrolling bars on the battery icon never stopped. So there was no way to tell if the charging was complete.

[2] Our neighborhood is old and on 2-acre lots, i.e., it is not an area with homes/addresses close by. The unit responded with a neighbor's address when "Current Location" was pressed. Moreover, even when our street address was manually entered, it planned the trip home to end at a neighbor's driveway!!

[3] The audio volume was on the low side.

Magellan customer service wastes a lot of time if one makes a phone call. They are based in the Philippines and it appears that they are trained to not entertain, as far as possible, any repair or replacement requests even with the type of defects described in 1 and 2 above.

big black spot

Written By Tim, DFW, Texas on Thursday, August 13, 2009

My very first road trip and was excited about having a new GPS system to
take with me! Within the first day, a small black spot appeared in the
middle of the screen. By the end of the trip, (10 days) it was the size of a
thumb print, blocking out screen view where the roads I was traveling on
were located. I called Magellan and they said they would replace it with
an upgraded model. Great, I thought. Until I got the "new" unit, which
turned out to be a "refurbished" unit. Also, the box has a sticker on it that
states my "refurbished unit" only has a 90 day warranty. I called them
and they said they would honor the original 1 year warranty, but they
would not put that in writing, like I asked them to.

Didn't Work

Written By Mike, Ringoes, NJ on Saturday, April 11, 2009

It is difficult to rate something that didn't work. When I received my GPS I charged it as per the instruction, but it would not power up. I had to send it to Magellan for repairs before I could even use it and go without the GPS that I paid this much for until it is returned.
