Our take on the Magellan RoadMate 1470

Take a worry-free trip nearly anywhere with Magellan's RoadMate 1470 portable navigator — its huge 4.7" color touchscreen provides a detailed view of the built-in maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. You can search for nearby hotels, restaurants, ATMs, and 6 million other points of interest, and you can even designate your own favorite stopping points, like picnic areas and scenic views. With Magellan's OneTouch™ interface, you can bookmark your favorite destinations and searches quickly, plus find points of interest in a jiffy with personalized search icons.

Features for the road
You'll hear the RoadMate 1470 direct you with commands like "turn right on Fillmore Avenue," instead of "take the next right," so you can keep your eyes on the road instead of the screen. This navigator also provides lane assistance on the highway so you'll know well in advance which lane will get you to an important exit or interchange. And Magellan's route optimization finds the quickest way between multiple stops on the same trip — great for saving time and gas when running errands around town.

Help on the way
The included AAA TourBook® features give you instant access to service details and recommended destinations from the leading travel resource. Just tap the screen for a quick phone listing for AAA Roadside Assistance™ in case of emergency — you'll also get your exact GPS location so help can find you quickly.

Features

Overview: The Magellan RoadMate 1470 is a portable navigation device that utilizes GPS signals from satellites to calculate your precise location and compute details about your travel destination. Once the RoadMate 1470 locates your position and movement, it can then overlay this information onto detailed integrated NAVTEQ maps to provide you with visual representation of your location and destination route. Because the RoadMate 1470 requires no installation, you can transfer the unit from one vehicle to another. The unit is made of high-impact plastic for added durability.

GPS Receiver: The RoadMate 1470 is equipped with a WAAS/EGNOS-equipped GPS receiver, giving you positioning accuracy down to 3 to 5 meters (10-16 feet).

Map Data: The RoadMate 1470 comes with detailed maps and destinations of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico, preloaded onto the built-in flash memory. The Magellan website will have information on further map updates as they become available.

Touchscreen Display: The unit features an anti-glare, touchscreen 4.7" wide display with easy to use menus, maps and icons. The display's brightness can be adjusted for easy night and daytime viewing.

OneTouch Favorites: The RoadMate 1470 features Magellan's exclusive OneTouch favorites menu. You can bookmark your personal favorite destinations, and access them whenever you want from the OneTouch menu.

Text-to-Speech: As you navigate to your destination, the RoadMate 1470 will announce the names of the street or exit ramps (or both if desired) that are involved in each maneuver.

QuickSpell: To help you make sure you enter in the correct destination, the RoadMate 1470 will automatically correct spelling errors and complete your destination address. QuickSpell with SmartCity search also uses information in the unit's database to limit the keys that need to be pressed, presenting only those which can access information in the database.

Multiple Destination Routing: If you're planning a trip with multiple stops, the RoadMate 1470 will allow you to place the destinations in the order you wish, or allow the unit to order the stops for the most efficient route, saving you time and money. You can change the order of stops at any time.

Points Of Interest (POI): The RoadMate 1470 offers 6-million points of interests to help you easily find gas stations, restaurants, ATMs, and more. You can search for POIs by entering the name or by selecting from a list of available categories and sub-categories. If desired, you can choose whether or not you want POI icons to be displayed on the map.

Exit POIs: This feature provides a listing of restaurants, gas stations, auto repair shops or hotels near approaching freeway exits. You can select one of the POIs listed and create a route to it.

AAA TourBook: The RoadMate 1470 includes travel information from AAA to make your trip safe, easy, and hassle-free. If you are a AAA member, you can take advantage of discount listings wherever the AAA card is accepted. There is an option to calculate a route to any of the locations provided in the TourBook. AAA TourBook categories include:

  • AAA TourBook Information: View information about accommodations, restaurants, destinations, attractions and events in locations near your current position or near any location you enter. (Restaurants and lodging destinations include AAA "Diamond" ratings info.)
  • Show Your Card & Save: Search for businesses that offer discounts for AAA members.
  • Approved Auto Repairs: Search for AAA-approved automotive repair facilities, including hours of operation and services offered.
  • AAA Branch Offices: Search for AAA branch offices with information on hours of operation and services offered.
  • Campgrounds: Search for campgrounds rated by AAA.

Warranty Extension for AAA Members: AAA members can get an extra year of warranty added to the manufacturer's one year warranty by registering their GPS unit within 60 days of purchase.

Current Location Screen: The Current Location screen displays approximate address information, the distance from the next and previous cross streets, as well as your latitude and longitude. To the right is a compass point in your direction of travel, calculated elevation and speed.

Map Screen Modes: There are two unique modes that the Map Screen can be displayed in - Normal and Routing.

  • Normal: In Normal mode, your position is shown on the map along with the time and your speed. As you travel, your position will be updated, giving you a clear view of your position and surrounding streets.
  • Routing: In Routing mode, additional information is displayed, providing you with more detailed information about the route you have selected. In the routing screen, you can view the name of the current street, plus the street name for the next maneuver, POI icons, and distance to next maneuver. You can toggle between the distance remaining to reach your destination, approximate time remaining until the destination is reached, and the approximate time of day to arrive at your destination.

Map View Options: The portable GPS unit allows you to the following map views.

  • 2D Map: Two dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in either the direction of your heading or direction pointing North.
  • 3D Map: Three dimensional view of map which displays the top of the screen in the direction of your heading.

Highway Lane Assist: The RoadMate 1470 will display highway signs as you approach a highway interchange, giving you a visual indication of which lane you want to be in.

Maneuver List Screen: Each line of the Maneuver List screen provides details about the maneuvers in the order that they are to be made, with the next maneuver at the top. The bottom bar of the Maneuver List screen indicates the distance and time to the next maneuver as well as the total distance computed for the route. The Maneuver List can be modified if you want to exclude one of the maneuvers to avoid traveling on one the streets listed.

GPS Status Screen: The GPS Status screen uses green bars to indicate that the Magellan RoadMate 1470 is using certain GPS satellites to compute the position. Orange bars indicate that the Magellan RoadMate 1470 is trying to lock onto a satellite signal and no bar shown indicates a satellite that is not being tracked. The longer the bars, the better the signal.

Setting GPS Position: Setting a GPS position is useful if you are not getting satellite information quickly because the Magellan RoadMate 1470 has traveled over 500 miles while turned off. Setting the GPS position will allow the unit to compute which satellites are available and calculate the position quicker.

Customizable Route Method: You can set the RoadMate 1470 to calculate your route by Fastest Time, Shortest Distance, Less Freeways or More Freeways. You can also Enable U-Turns and Avoid Toll Roads for any routing method.

Auto Night Map Display: In Auto Night Map Display mode the unit's map screen is displayed in pastel colors for daytime use and a black background for nighttime use.

Rechargeable Battery: The unit has a built-in Li-Ion rechargeable battery that offers up to 3 hours of continuous use. You can recharge the unit's built-in battery with the supplied vehicle power adapter, or an optional AC adapter.

Mounting: The RoadMate 1470 comes supplied with an adjustable cradle that can be mounted to your windshield using a suction-cup mount. It can also be mounted to the dashboard of your vehicle, using the suction cup and the supplied self-adhesive disc.

Optional Traffic Link: The RoadMate 1470 is Traffic Link compatible (sold separately), offering live on-screen traffic incident reports.

Magellan RoadMate 1470

Written By Pete H., Scottsdale AZ on Thursday, October 28, 2010

I have had a portable GPS system since they came out several years ago. Back then I
purchased a Alpine at over 600 dollars. I had a trip coming up to California, traveling from
Phoenix to Sacramento for a few days then down to LA for a few more and back home
again. I decided to update my present GPS system, but found out it was going to cost me
right about 100 dollars to do so. So I went online and did some comparision shopping and
found the Megellan at just about the same price as udating my present unit.
Having some knowledge of portable GPS units made using the Megellan very easy. Although
with all the updates from years ago, it is already very easy to use. I was amazed at how
advanced this unit was compared to my old one at almost 6 times the price. It got me to my
destinations with ease and no confusion. One feature I really liked over my old one, is that
when you put in a address, you do not have to start with a state. It does that once the
address and city are typed in for you. Also, when you pulled in for gas and shut off your
vehicle, you have the opportunity to use battery power and not lose your destination, or have
to start over by pulling it up from recent trips.
Over all, I really enjoy my new GPS system, way to go Megellan.

Awesome and reasonable priced.

This is my first GPS system that I've purchased and let me say that it does everything you need it to do. The screen is large enough and the setup is fool proof. The features that you get with this system vs the price, its a no brain er. I highly recommend this GSP system.
